• Where can I find the F# runtime for Silverlight 4

  I have been playing around with Silverlight & F# and tried to make a Silverlight 4 application in VS2010 Professional. When I try and compile my application I get the following error message... Error 12 F# runtime for Silverlight version v4.0 is not installed. Please go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=177463 to download and install matching.. For the life of me I cannot find the runtime on this page or a place to download it. Does anyone know of the actual URL

• Artistic aspects of UI?

  Consider a single button. At one extreme, we have a black OpenGL window, with: outline (in white) of a rectangle bitmap remdered font inside of it, saying "Ok" At the other extreme, we have Mac OS X, a button that is: well rounded has some gradient showing light effects on it nice antialiased "OK" soft shadow of some sort These two UIs present very very different user experiences. The former says "This is from the 80s" the latter says "this is professional". This is something I do not understand well as a programmer (and don't know where to learn about this). Does anyone know of a good technical resource for this? [I'd prefer things that draws upon psychology / perception literature to say why to do something rather than design books that just says "use color XYZ with a gradient of blah"]

• WPF 4.0 Font Rendering Issue

  I'm getting a weird rendering issue with WPF 4 applications in the way they render some of the text as it's stretching it and making it very narrow. .net 3.5: .net 4.0: At first I thought it could be a problem with the font, but I'm also seeing the same problem in the Blend 4 beta: I'm running XP SP3, Visual Studio 2010 Professional and everything's as up to date as it can be. I'm not noticing any such problems with Silverlight 4 apps I have built on the same machine... Anyone else seen this or know why it's happening?

• Flash CS5 and dynamic textfields

  I have a "shell" that started life in Flash CS3 (Flash 9, AS3) that has been since used with CS4 and now CS5. It creates TextFields in ActionScript for display (reading the content of those fields from XML). The text fields are either Myriad Pro Regular or Myriad Pro Semibold, both are embedded in the SWF from the Library (any given text field will only use one of those fonts) and using Advanced anti-aliasing. Once a FLA goes into CS5 is still has the same problem when saved back into CS4. The problem is the spacing between letters are now quite random, and the width of each text field is too wide (by about 10%). Changing the letterSpacing property (to something negative) makes this more noticeable. I read on here about Font.registerFont(MyriadPro) but that doesn't seem to be doing anything. Does anyone know how to make CS5 behave like previous versions of Flash? I'm using Flash Professional on Snow Leopard (as part of CS5 Web Premium).

  Hi, I'm going to make my monthly trip to the bookstore soon and I'm kind of interested in learning some user interface and/or design stuff - mostly web related, what are some good books I should look at? One that I've seen come up frequently in the past is Don't Make Me Think, which looks promising. I'm aware of the fact that programmers often don't make great designers, and as such this is more of a potential hobby thing than a move to be a professional designer. I'm also looking for any good web resources on this topic. I subscribed to Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox newsletter, for instance, although it seems to come only once a month or so. Thanks! • Running directx samples on a Windows Mobile 6.1 device

  I tried to run the directx samples from ..\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\Samples\PocketPC\CPP\win32\directx\d3dm\tutorials on a Samsung Omnia and on the emulator and it doesn't work because of a deployment error. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and have installed Windows Mobile SDK Standard and Professional refresh. The device is correctly plugged in and set up for active sync (I know this because other samples work, also a creating Win32 smart device and running it works). When I try to run the application it compiles without errors but the message: " There were deployment errors, Continue? Yes/No" appears If I manually copy the application from the debug folder to the device and run it from there, it works. The same deployment error message appears if I try it on an emulator. Other applications are deploying successfully. Is there any way to make the deployment work? Maybe there is an obscure option I need to set...

  Hi, i'm quite new to HTML, and am trying to create a professional looking TreeView. I can not use the in built TreeView in ASP.NET as i need to point the target of the selection to another frame (I have tried, and this doesn't seem possible). My TreeView is built up as follows: Folder1 ChildOne ChildTwo ChildThree Folder2 ChildOne ChildTwo ChildThree I have the collapsing of the folders working, but would like to know how to format this TreeView so it has dotted lines down to the child nodes (as most TreeViews tend to have).   Hi, Spring mvc is a framework that has been long time out there, it is well documented and proven technology. A lot of web sites are using spring. Seam is a framework based on jsf - rich faces implementation. It has a lot of ajax based components. It uses some heavy stuff like EJB, JPA. All of this is prone to errors and this framework is so slow (at my computer it is almost impossible do develop something because it is really slow, especially redeploying on jboss) But is is very good for back office applications. Does someone have a professional experience with this two frameworks? Can you recommend the better one ? Why? Regards

• Options to develop professionally with Microsoft tools and Technologies without spending a lot?

  I would like to develop applications for the Windows platform & at the very least I need a server based Windows OS (2008), SQL Server, IIS and Visual Studio. Looks like VS2010 professional alone will cost over $1K. Is there a cheaper option to get hold of Microsoft software? I remember long time ago there was an MSDN subscription option which allowed user access to server based OS and other server applications with restrictive licensing that was cost effective. I don't see that option anymore. Moreover, I am not a student & I understand Microsoft provides software at discounted rates for students. Any pointers? Many thanks.

• How come you cannot catch Code Contract exceptions?

  System.Diagnostics.Contracts.ContractException is not accessiable in my test project. Note this code is purely myself messing around with my shiney new copy of Visual Studio, but I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong. I'm using the professional edition of VS, therefore I do not have static checking. In order to still use code contracts (which I like) I figured the only way my method can work is to catch the exception that is thrown at runtime, but I'm not finding this possible. • Debug .Net Framework's source code only shows disassembly in Visual Studio 2010

  Hi! I'm trying to debug .Net Framework's source code using Visual Studio 2010 Professional. I followed the steps described in Raj Kaimal's post but I must be doing something wrong since the only code I'm getting to see is the disassembly code: As you can see in the image, the Go to Source Code and the Load Symbols options are disabled. Nevertheless, symbols are downloaded from Microsoft's server since I can see them inside the local cache directory. The code I'm debugging goes as follow: var wr = WebRequest.Create("http://www.google.com"); Console.WriteLine("Web request created"); var req = wr.GetRequestStream(); Console.Read(); When I hit F11 to step into the first line of code, a window pops us looking for the "WebRequst.cs" file inside "f:\dd\ndp\fx\src\Net\System\Net\WebRequest.cs" which does not exists on my machine.   I have a layout 'profile' <div> <div> $this->action(action1, controller1, module1)<div> <div> $this->layout()->content </div> <div> $this->action(someotheraction, soController,soModule ); </div And the problem starts when I want to get the $request-Params() from the action1 , controller1 module1 , it is empty. I looked at the code of a helper Action , it does accept as a 4th parameter Params, but then I will have to set it somewhere in the layout - which is not good. Basically what are the recommendations of guru people that are pretty professional with zend Framework. Maybe I should do some work around or should change the concept of how I am injecting additional Controller(module) actions

Sometimes the big companies themselves release open source because they have some benefits. Then they sell support, advices ... My question is what is the real economy about open software? • ::LookupAccountSid API Extremely Slow When Targetting x64 Platform (Windows 7)

  During our application startup, we are making a call to ::LookupAccountSid(). When I build targetting the x86 architecture, this call is nearly instantaneous. However, when I target x64 (debug or release), the call generally takes over 40s to complete. Since this is occurring during application startup, the result is fairly unpleasant as it will appear to the user that the application is not launching. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a Dell Studio XPS 16 (Intel Core i7 Q 720). Our application is a native Windows application written in C++. • Implications of not forwarding http:// to http://www.

  Hi, my company is running IIS and DNN (I'm not a server guy, so color me ignorant), and I've read previous that you should either redirect your .http://www.mydomain to .http://mydomain or Vice Versa. Can anyone give me reasons to do this? (periods "prepended" to remove href) From what I understand, it's because search engines see those as two different 'sites' (Even when visiting one or the other, I can be logged into one but not the other). I also heard it can be a duplicate content problem, which search engines dislike. Just looking for some professional insight, will help me and others. Thanks!

• How to counter the "one true language" perspective?

  How do you work with someone when they haven't been able to see that there is a range of other languages out there beyond "The One True Path"? I mean someone who hasn't realised that the modern software professional has a range of tools in his toolbox. The person whose knee jerk reaction is, for example, "We must do this is C++!" • MS Access Force report footer to bottom of page

  I am trying to make a report for a proposal. I would like to keep a professional look and always force the terms section to the bottom of the page. I could use the page footer but I only want the terms to show on the last page. My idea is somehow with VBA to set the height of a dummy group such that it forces the report footer to the bottom. The problem is that you can't explicitly set the height of a section. Anyone else out there with another idea (That works)? :-) Thanks, Jeff

• How to access a SIM card programatically?

  Just any old GSM compatible SIM card (bonus for 3G USIM). I presume I need some hardware? Can anyone recommend something cheap for hobbyist, and something more professional? I presume that there will be full docs of an API with the h/w, so maybe this should be tagged "no-programming-related"? Sorry, if so. Any good URLs or books (I am conversant with the 3GPP standards).
