• Fastest way to access VB6 String in C#

  Hi I am using COMInterop. I have a call in VB6 which returns a string of roughly 13000 chars. If I execute the call in pure VB6 it takes about 800ms to execute. If I execute it via c# and COMInterop it takes about 8 seconds. I'm assuming the delay is caused by marshalling. If I am correct about marshalling, I'd be grateful if someone could suggest the fastest way I can get this into C#. e.g. Would it be better to a) expose it as a byte array b) provide a byref string param into the VB6 layer I would appreciate some sample code as well. I tried the Marshal.PtrToStringAuto(Marshal.ReadIntPtr(myCOMObject.GetString, 0) to no avail Many thx S

• From actionscript to google's datastore through java.

  I'm working on a flash game written in pure actionscript 3.0 in Flex. I've just finished implementing replays for the game, but want to store the top 10 hiscores' replay data on my google-app-engine'd website. I'm using Java for the app-engine stuff in Eclipse in java but I have no idea how to deal with communicating to my java code from my actionscript code. I'll need to both read and write from actionscript - java - datastore. Does anyone have any experience with this? For note, I'm horribly noob with anything to do with web development. I hear you can pass arguments to a URL when calling it, comparable to command-line arguments on a desktop executable and if so then sending all the data as a large string would be doable... The question then would be how to call a url from AS3 code with additional data and then how to catch that on the java side. Thanks to anyone who can help. Jono

• pros and cons with server management gui tools to manage linux web servers

  i have stumbled upon these GUI tools that could help you manage your linux server through a web interface. ebox, webmin, ispconfig, zivios, ispcp, plesk, cpanel etc. i wonder what the pros and cons are with these solutions. a lot of people is saying that they are not as good as using pure command line (ssh) to manage your server. but i think thats yet another "linux are for advanced users" talk. i agree that some things may only be done with the command line by editing directly in the configuration files. but i don't really want to do that every time and for everything. its like not having phpmyadmin for managing mysql. it would be a pain in the ass right? so if one wants to throw up a web server serving a php site oneself developed and wants all the usual stuff up and running (mysql, phpmyadmin, svn, webdav etc) is these tools the right way to go?

• JMF Registry could not add item (Vista)

  Hello, I'm using JMF to capture video stream (webcam) on my Java project. The camera I'm using is recognized by JMF (JFMStudio) and I manage to get the video stream. However, on JMF Registry Editor - there's a list of available capture devices, when I click "Add" on one of the items (including the one I need) I get a "Could not add item" error. Therefore this camera is not set in the registry of it (god know where) and later on it is not recognized by my project: RGBFormat fmt = new RGBFormat(); // could be YUV - doesn't matter Vector v = CaptureDeviceManager.getDeviceList(fmt); v is empty (while I know the video source is recognized by Java , since I manage to get video on JMF Studio). Now, this happens only on Vista (where else) and not on XP. I have a suspiction that somehow Vista security blocks Java from writing the registry file, but of course, I might be wrong. One more comments: this is vfw:Microsoft WDM Image Capture(Win32):0 device. Any idea ?

• Vectorizatoin of index operation for a scipy.sparse matrix

  The following code runs too slowly even though everything seems to be vectorized. from numpy import * from scipy.sparse import * n = 100000; i = xrange(n); j = xrange(n); data = ones(n); A=csr_matrix((data,(i,j))); x = A[i,j] The problem seems to be that the indexing operation is implemented as a python function, and invoking A[i,j] results in the following profiling output 500033 function calls in 8.718 CPU seconds Ordered by: internal time ncalls tottime percall cumtime percall filename:lineno(function) 100000 7.933 0.000 8.156 0.000 csr.py:265(_get_single_element) 1 0.271 0.271 8.705 8.705 csr.py:177(__getitem__) (...) Namely, the python function _get_single_element gets called 100000 times which is really inefficient. Why isn't this implemented in pure C? Does anybody know of a way of getting around this limitation, and speeding up the above code? Should I be using a different sparse matrix type?

  Hi, On my SSAS 2008 instance if a backup/restore of any database is made to/from a UNC path I get an error : The following system error occurred from a call to GetOverlappedResult for Physical file: '\server\share\OLAPDB.abf', Logical file: '' : Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. . Server: The operation has been cancelled. (Microsoft.AnalysisServices) Creating/copying/moving a file on the share of any size on the share using explorer or the command prompt works. I want to do something very very similar for a site I'm building. ShareThis offers a widget that does the same thing but it's branded and external. I'm looking for a pure Ruby solution. A gem containing a module that could be included in a Rails ApplicationHelper class would be perfect. Suggestions appreciated before I go reinventing the wheel!

  anyone knows a simple JS library implementing the UNZIP algorithm? No disk-file access, only zip and unzip a string of values. there are ActiveX, using WinZIP and other client dependent software for ZIP, written in JS. but no pure algorithm implementation, is it really difficult or non-functional? i would use it for displaying KMZ files in a HTML page with the GMap object (google maps). The KMZ file is just a zipped KML file. I want to unzip a KMZ file and feed the KML to GMap.

• Setting treeview background color in VB6 has a flaw - help?

  I have successfully implemented this method of using the Win32 API to set the background color of a treeview in VB 6: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/178491 However, one thing goes wrong: when you expand the tree nodes more than two levels deep, the area to the left of (and sometimes under) the inner plus [+] and minus [-] signs is still white. Does anyone know how to get this area to the correct background color, too? Note: I'm also setting the BackColor of each node, and also the BackColor of the treeview's imagelist. • Process.Start concatenating cmd line from previous invocation

  Hi, I am using a Process.Start in .Net 2.0 to start a child win32 app. Process.start ( "SomeProcess.exe", "<Cmd line>" ); The process runs fine but and the user then closes this window. However if I then run the same process again in the same session, the cmd line recieved by the called process is now a concatentation of the previous call. I.e SomeProcess.exe recieves the cmd line " SomeProcess.exe ". Has anyone else seen this behaviour before? Any help much appreciated. Ralph.

• MathML or OMML to PNG w/ .NET?

  Are there any libraries which take MathML (or, even more preferably, OMML) and outputs a .PNG file? I am putting together an export process for .docx files and, as a part of this process, I'd like to extract equations and render them as .PNG files. Word 2007 does this natively when you save a document for the web, but so far, I have not been able to find a way to do this programmatically (if anyone has an answer for that, it would be even better). So the next best thing is to take the OMML and use the Microsoft provided XSL stylesheets and transform them to MathML. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any (working) rendering libraries for either MathML or OMML. If there aren't any pure .NET libraries for this, I'll settle for just about anything that I can call from a commandline to output a .PNG from either MathML or OMML.

• C++ Winsock non-blocking/async UDP socket

  Hi all! I'm developping a little data processor in c++ over UDP sockets, and have a thread (just one, and apart the sockets) that process the info received from them. My problem happens when i need to receive info from multiple clients in the socket at the same time. How could i do something like: Socket foo; /* init socket vars and attribs */ while (serving){ thread_processing(foo_info); } for multiple clients (many concurrent access) in c++? I'm using winsocks atm on win32, but just get standard blocking udp sockets working. No gui, it's a console app. I'll appreciate so much an example or pointer to one ;). Thanks in advance.

• Automating the Choose a digital certificate dialog

  I am using WatiN (2.0.10.928) with C# and Visual Studio 2008 to test a SSL secured website that requires a certificate. When you navigate to the homepage a "Choose a digital certificate" dialog is displayed and requires that you select a valid certificate and click the 'OK' button. I'm looking for a way to automate the certificate selection so that every time a new test or fixture is executed (and my browser restarts) I don't have to manually interfere with the automated test and select the certificate. I've tried using various WatiN Dialog Handler classes and even looked into using the Win32 API to automate this but haven't had much luck. I finally found a solution but its adds another dependency to the solution (a third party library called AutoIT). Since this solution isn't ideal but does work and is the best I could find, I will post the solution and mark it as the answer but I am still looking for an 'out of the box' WatiN solution that is more consistent with the rest of my code and test fixtures.   Why is the unit test useful when the view is not unit testable in MVVM? In MVVM, we have the models, view-models, and views. The claimed advantage is that MVVM can make the models and view=models unit testable. But all the three parties belong to the same application. If the views are not unit testable, why test the other two? Will unit testing the other two and leave one not tested improve the quality? Removing all the code-behind from the views sounds weird to me. How about the code-behind only handles the pure UI operations?

• Apache/passenger/ree doesn't interpret .rb files

  I'm trying to get apache + passenger + ree to work. I think I did everything (except for setting up rails env - for now I wanna run just pure ruby) described here: http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/integration/passenger/ But when I try to go to localhost/test.rb it doesn't interpret that file and just download it. • Pseudorandom crashes in Flash Debugger - My bad, or Abode's?

  I'm working on a large-size dual AS3/Flex project (some parts are pure AS3, other parts are Flex), and I'm experiencing a lot of Flash Debugger crashes. These crashes aren't completely random - it seems like I can get them to occur with greater consistency when I perform certain actions in my app. However, at the same time, they aren't consistently repeatable - sometimes a set of actions causes my app to crash, and other times, the same steps execute fine without a crash. I have two questions (carefully worded to remove my personal bias :) ) Are these crashes due to my coding practices, or Adobe's Flash Debugger? When I deploy my app on a web site and access it via Flash Player, should I expect the same crashes to occur, or is Flash Player considerably more resilient than Flash Debugger? • Noise Estimation / Noise Measurement in Image

  Hello. I want to estimate the noise in an image. Let's assume the model of an Image + White Noise. Now I want to estimate the Noise Variance. My method is to calculate the Local Variance (3*3 up to 21*21 Blocks) of the image and then find areas where the Local Variance is fairly constant (By calculating the Local Variance of the Local Variance Matrix). I assume those areas are "Flat" hence the Variance is almost "Pure" noise. Yet I don't get constant results. Is there a better way? Thanks.

• dojo/dijit and Printing

  I want to be able to provide a button to my users to just print a particular portion of my dojo/dijit application. There seems to be a general lack of documentation and examples when it comes to printing. For example, I have a specific dijit.layout.ContentPane that contains the content that I would like to print, but I wouldn't want to print the rest of the document. I have seen some pure JavaScript examples on the web where the node.innerHTML is read into a "hidden" iframe and then printed from there. I suspect that would work, but I was wondering if there was a more dojo centric approach to printing. Any thoughts?

• Conflicting PACKAGE_NAME and other macros when using autotools.

  When using autotools (with a config.h file) for both a library and a software built on that library the compiler complains about a redefinition of some macros (PACKAGE_NAME, PACKAGE_TARNAME and so on). How can I prevent this? The config.h file is needed in the library to propagate it's setting to the software that use it.   This is a Windows Console application (actually a service) that a previous guy built 4 years ago and is installed and running. • XML Signature in a Web application

  Hi, We are developing an e-Banking web application for a small bank (up to 20000 clients/users). We have to implement digital signatures with X509 certificates (issued by CA on USB tokens) for signing payment information. We tried using CAPICOM but it seems that it is not working well with Windows Vista (have not tried it with Win 7). The other problem is that core banking system can process only Xml digital signatures, so we have to sign XML documents (not just a bulk-formatted text data like with CAPICOM and Win32 Crypto API). So my questions here are: Does anyone of you have similar problem and how did they solved it? Is there a plug-in, library, component or external tool (for Internet Explorer and/or Fire Fox) that supports XML Digital Signatures in a web application? Can you please recommend some of these products and write something about your experience with them? Thank you very much.
