I can see any number of ways you might stumble onto an alert that you need. For example, if you are visiting My Oracle Support in search of answers under the Knowledge tab and happen to notice, and click on, the Alert tab the under the Knowledge Article region, you might see an alert listed for one of the products you use. There are other ways… like subscribing to one of the Oracle Blogs and finding the alert in your RSS feed because the blogger decided to write up that topic for the latest post. I’m sure your colleagues sometimes pass on critical alerts for your products, I hope, giving you the information before you needed it. Well, no matter how you learn about an alert, the important point is that you get the correct information in a timely way. Right? I must admit, the ‘magic’ required to find out via these methods makes me nervous. Rather than leave it to chance, I think you need a more reliable way to stay informed and receive alerts for your products when Oracle publishes them. Author interactively rebases feature branch, stashes it to remove those "comment" commits and now is ready to merge feature to develop or make any action that usualy could be after successful internal review IDE support I know, that custom comment tags are possible in eclipse & netbeans.   • LibreOffice - Can't drag and replace images [LibreOffice 3.5 and 3.6, Ubuntu 12.04]

    My wife uses LibreOffice to create catalogues of a couple hundred items and then converts it to PDF. Man we love LibreOffice! Anyway I set up Windows-7 and Mint-14-Mate dual boot for her to ease into Linux. Today she was ready for Ubuntu and so I did a clean install on her machine. Everything was smooth but today when she tried to work she ran into an issue... She used to be able to download a folder full of images to use in her catalogues and then update her catalogues by replacing old images with new ones. It was so simple - Open an old catalogue, save with a new date, drag and drop replace images of items that no longer exist. The drag and drop process would scale the image and then crop it horizontally or vertically to fit. Now that I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 for her she can no longer replace images, it just does nothing... If she drags the image to the left or right of the original it appears next to the original so I know d&d works, unfortunately it does not resize or crop the image. I tried this on my laptop and my desktop... same thing! I then tried updating the LibreOffice to 3.6, no change. I then tried opening a virtual machine windows xp and Mint 14 on this computer and tried with 3.6 in those operating systems and it worked. Can anyone help? I have a lot of hope that there is an answer because Mint is based on Ubuntu/Debian and that distro can perform this task successfully! Sorry about writing a book....

  • Surface RT: To Be Or Not To Be (Part 1)

    So the Surface RT has been out for 9 months and Microsoft just declared a $900 million dollar write-down. So how did this happen and what does it mean for Microsoft’s efforts to break into the tablet market? I have been thinking a lot about most of the information below since the Surface product line was released. If you are looking for a “Microsoft Is Dead” story, then don’t read any further. But if you want an honest look at what I think led Microsoft to this point and what I think can be done to make Surface RT devices better, then please continue reading. What Led Microsoft To The $900 Million Write-Down Surface Unveiling:Microsoft totally missed the boat when they unveiled the Surface product line on June 18th, 2012. Microsoft should’ve been ready to post the specifications of both devices that night. Microsoft should’ve had a site up and running right after the event so people could pre-order the devices. This would have given them a good idea what the interest was in each device.  They could also have used this data to make a better estimate for the number of units to to have available for the launch and beyond.  They also lost out on taking advantage of the excitement generated by the Surface RT and Surface Pro announcement. They could have thrown in a free touch keyboard to anyone who pre-ordered. The advertising should have started right after the announcement and gotten bigger as launch day approached. Push for as many pre-order as possible and build excitement for the launch. Actual Launch (Surface RT): By this time all excitement was gone from the initial announcement, except for the Micorsoft faithful. Microsoft should have been ready to sell the Surface in as many markets as possible at launch. The limited market release was a real letdown for a lot of people.  A limited release right after the initial announce is understandable, but not at the official launch of the product. Microsoft overpriced the device and now they are lowering it to what it should have been to start with. The $349 price is within the range I suggested it should be at before pricing was announced. (Surface Tablets: The Price Must Be Right). Limited ordering options online was also a killer. User should have been able to buy the base unit of each device and then add on whatever keyboard they wanted to (this applies more to the Surface Pro).  There should have also been a place where users could order any additional add-ins that they wanted to buy (covers, extra power supplies, etc.) Marketing was better and the dancing “Click In” commercial was cool, but the ads comparing the iPad with Siri should have been on the air from day one of the announcement (or at least the launch).  Consumers want to know why you tablet is better, not just that is has a clickable keyboard and built-in kickstand. They could have also compared it to some of the other mid-range tablets if they had not overprices it to begin with. Stock Applications (Mail, People, Calendar, Music, Video, Reader and IE): This is where Microsoft really blew it. They had all the time in the world to make these applications the best of breed and instead we got applications that seemed thrown together.  Some updates have made these application better, but they are all still lacking in features that should have been there from day one. This did not help to enhance a new users experience any. ** I will admit that the applications that were data driven were first class citizen’s and that makes it even more perplexing why MS could knock it out of the park with the Weather, Travel, Finance, Bing, etc.) and fail so miserably on the core applications users would use the most on a tablet. Desktop on Tablet: The desktop just is so out of place on the tablet  I understand it was needed for Office but think it would have been better to not have the desktop in Windows RT, but instead open up the Office applications in full screen mode, in a desktop shell (same goes for  IE11).That way the user wouldn’t realize they are leaving Metro and going to the desktop. The other option would have been to just not include Office on Windows RT devices. Instead they could have made awesome Widows Store Apps for Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint. In addition, they could have made the stock Mail, People, and Calendar applications contain all the functions that Outlook gives desktop users. Having some of the settings in desktop mode and others under “Change PC Settings” made Windows RT seemed unfinished and rushed to market. What Can Be Done To Make Windows RT Based Tablets Better (At least in my opinion) Either eliminate the desktop all together from Windows RT or at least make the user experience better by hiding the fact the user is running Office/IE in the desktop. Personally I ‘d like them to totally get rid of it and just make awesome Windows Store Application version of Word, Excel PowerPoint & OneNote.  This might also make the OS smaller and give the user more available disk space. I doubt there will ever be a Windows Store App versions of Office, but I still think it is a good idea. Make is so users can easily direct their documents, picture, videos and music to their extra storage and can access these files from the standard libraries.  A user should not have to create a VM on their microSD card or create symbolic links to get this to work properly. Most consumers would not be able to do this. Then users get frustrated when they run out or room on their main storage because nothing is automatically save to their microSD card when saved to libraries.  This is a major bug that needs to be fixed, otherwise Microsoft’s selling point of having a microSD slot is worthless. Allows users to uninstall and re-install any of the Office product that come with the Surface. That way people can free up storage space by uninstalling the Office applications they do not need. Everyone’s needs are different, so make the options flexible. Don’t take up storage space for applications the user will not use. Make the Core applications the “Cream of the Crop” Windows App Store applications. The should set the bar for all other Store applications. Improve performance as much as possible, if it seems to be sluggish on a tablet consumer will not buy it. They need to price the next line of Surface product very aggressive to undercut not only iPad but also Android low end tablets (Nook, Kindle Fire, and Nexus, etc.) Give developers incentives to write quality applications for the devices. Don’t reward developers for cranking out cookie cutter, low quality applications. I’d even suggest Microsoft consider implementing some new store certification guideline to stop these type of applications being published. Allow users to easily move the recover disk “partition between their microSD card and main storage. My Predictions for the Surface RT and Windows RT I honestly think even with all the missteps MS has made since the announcement  about the Surface product line, that they are on the right path. I was excited the Surface tablets when they were announced, and I still am. The truth be told, Windows 8 on a tablet (aka: Windows RT) is better than both iOS and Android. My nephew who is an Apple fan boy told me after he saw and used Windows 8 (he got the beta running on his iPad), that Windows 8 kicked Apples butt as a tablet OS. So there is hope for all Windows RT based tablets. I agree with my nephew and that is why whenever anyone asks me about my Surface, I love showing it off and recommend it. The 6 keys to gaining market share in the tablet market are; Aggressive pricing by both Microsoft and their OEM’s Good quality devices put out by Microsoft and their OEM’s (there are some out there, but not enough) Marketing, Marketing, Marketing from both Microsoft and their OEM’s (Need more ads showing why windows based tablets are better than iPads and Android tablets) Getting Widows tablets in retails stores all over, and giving sales people incentive to sell them. Consumers like to try electronics out before they buy them, and most will listen to what the sales person suggest. Microsoft needs sales people in retail stores directing people to buy windows based tablets over iPads and Android tablets. I think the Microsoft Stores within Best Buy is a good start, but they also need to get prominent displays in Walmart, Target, etc.. Release a smaller form factor Surface, Hopefully the 8”-10” next generation Surface is not a rumor. Make “Surface” the brand name for all Microsoft tablets and hybrid devices that they come out with. They cannot change the name with each new release.  Make Surface synonymous with quality, the same way that iPad  is for Apple. Well, that is my 2 cents on the subject.   • View Word Definitions in IE 8 with the Define with Bing Accelerator

    Do you need an easy way to view word definitions while browsing with Internet Explorer? The Define with Bing Accelerator will display definitions in the same (or a new) tab and save you time while browsing. Using Define with Bing The installation consists of two steps. First, click on Add to Internet Explorer to start the process. Next you will be asked to confirm the installation. Once you have clicked Add your new accelerator is ready to use (no browser restart required). Whenever you encounter a word that needs defining highlight it, click on the small blue square, go to All Accelerators, and then Define with Bing. There are two ways to access the definition: Hover your mouse over the Define with Bing text to open a small popup window Click on Define with Bing to open a definition search in a new tab Being able to access a definition or explanation in the same tab will definitely save you time while browsing. In the example shown here you can get an idea of what SCORM means but clicking on the links inside the popup window is not recommended (webpage opens in popup and is not resizable). In the situation shown above it is better to click on Define with Bing and see more information in a new tab. Conclusion The Define with Bing Accelerator can be a very useful time saver while browsing with Internet Explorer. Finding those word definitions will be a much more pleasant experience now.     Distro: Ubuntu 12.04.2 Server 32-bit Server client: vsftpd 2.3.5 (from default "main" repository) Problem: Since upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 12.04 (nothing changed on client-side), vsftp has refused to make chroot-jails with the "chroot_local_user" directive on FTP(e/i)S-connections. Try to connect with an FTP user client and upload some files. With my setup, the above listed config works well at this point. Edit /etc/vsftpd.conf and set chroot_local_user= to YES. Make sure that chroot_list_enable= and/or chroot_list_file= are not set. Comment them out if they are. Save and exit. Run sudo restart vsftpd (or sudo service vsftpd restart if you like) in a terminal. Try to connect with an FTP user client. You should see a message more or less like this: GnuTLS error -15: An unexpected TLS packet was received. This is an issue for me, as I do not want FTP-sessions to be able to list files outside the user's home folder. I have checked with several client-side apps, and I get the same results with every one of them. Filezilla is not so good regarding cipher methods nowadays, but as I am able to make an FTP(e)s-connection over TLS (as long as chroot'ing is disabled and ssl_ciphers is set to HIGH) I have a feeling ciphers are not the issue this time, and that I won't find the answer by tweaking configs on the client side. My vsftpd.log stays empty, even though debug_ssl and log_ftp_protocol are enabled, so no info there either.

    Windows Azure is a platform that allows you to write software, run software, or use software that we've already written. We provide lots of resources to help you do that - many can be found right here in this blog series. There are two primary resources you can use, and it's important to understand what they are and what they do. The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) Actually, this isn't one resource. We have SDK's for multiple development environments, such as Visual Studio and also Eclipse, along with SDK's for iOS, Android and other environments. Windows Azure is a "back end", so almost any technology or front end system can use it to solve a problem. The SDK's are primarily for development. In the case of Visual Studio, you'll get a runtime environment for Windows Azure which allows you to develop, test and even run code all locally - you do not have to be connected to Windows Azure at all, until you're ready to deploy. You'll also get a few samples and codeblocks, along with all of the libraries you need to code with Windows Azure in .NET, PHP, Ruby, Java and more.   • Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

    Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported.   • DevDays ‘00 The Netherlands day #2

    Day 2 of DevDays 2010 and again 5 interesting sessions at the World Forum in The Hague. The first session of the today in the big world forum theater was from Scott Hanselman, he gives a lap around .NET 4.0. In his way of presenting he talked about all kind of new features of .NET 4.0 like MEF, threading, parallel processing, changes and additions to the CLR and DLR, WPF and all new language features of .NET 4.0. After a small break it was ready for session 2 from Scott Allen about Tips, Tricks and Optimizations of LINQ. He talked about lazy and deferred executions, the difference between IQueryable and IEnumerable and the two flavors of LINQ syntax. The lunch was again very good prepared and delicious, but after that it was time for session 3 Web Vulnerabilities and Exploits from Alex Thissen. This was no normal session but more like a workshop, we decided what kind of subjects we discussed, the subjects where OWASP, XSS and other injections, validation, encoding. He gave some handy tips and tricks how to prevent such attacks. Session 4 was about the new features of C# 4.0 from Alex van Beek. He talked about Optional- en Named Parameters, Generic Co- en Contra Variance, Dynamic keyword and COM Interop features. He showed how to use them but also when not to use them. The last session of today and also the last session of DevDays 2010 was about WCF Best Practices from Gerben van Loon. He talked about 7 best practices that you must know when you are going to use WCF. With some quick demos he showed the problem and the solution for some common issues. It where two interesting days and next year i sure will be attending again.

  • Running ADF Essentials in Tomcat

    Oracle released a few days ago ADF Essentials, which is a free version of its Oracle ADF Framework. Oracle ADF Essentials can run on the Glassfish Application Server, well explained by Shay here  . Glassfish is also certified to run ADF Essentials Application. However, It could be possible to run ADF Essentials Applications in a Java EE Container. So, I’ll describe the steps to run the ADF Faces Rich Client demo application into a Tomcat 7. Before we start, you should download the files: • Apache Tomcat 7 : http://tomcat.apache.org/download-70.cgi • Oracle ADF Essentials 11.1.2.3 : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/downloads/index.html • Oracle ADF Faces Components Demo 11.1.2.3: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/downloads/index.html Steps: 1. Extract your tomcat 7. In my case, I choose D:\ apache-tomcat-7.0.29 2. Extract ADF Essentials zip file inside the %TOMCAT_HOME%\lib 3. Put the rcf-dvt-demo.war file inside the %TOMCAT_HOME%\webapps 4. Open the file %TOMCAT_HOME%\bin\catalina.bat (or .sh if you’re in linux environment) and add in the end of the line ‘set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% %LOGGING_CONFIG%’ this -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m If you don’t do this, probably when you start you’ll see a OutOfMemory error. 5. Here is the little trick, tomcat does not come with jsf jar’s, so you have to put there. So, I went to the Oracle Jdeveloper 11.1.2 instalation and search for this files: • jsf-api.jar • jsf-impl.jar • glassfish.jstl_1.2.0.1.jar 6. You’re ready to start tomcat in %TOMCAT_HOME%\bin\startup.bat If everything is fine, you will be able to open your favourite browser and type http://localhost:8080/rcf-dvt-demo/faces/index.jspx

    If you’re looking to quickly share a file across a variety of file hosting services, Uploading.to makes it a cinch to share up to 10 files across 14 hosts. The upload process is simple. Visit Uploading.to, select your files, check the hosts you want to share the file across (by default all 14 are checked), add a description to the collection, and hit the Upload button. Uploading.to will upload your file to the various hosts; during the process you’ll see which hosts are confirmed and which have failed. We had 2 failures among the 14 hosts which still left the file mirrored across a sizable 12 host spread–not bad at all.   • Dryad and DryadLINQ from MSR

    Microsoft Research (MSR) researches technologies, incubates projects which many times result in technology that looks like a ready-to-use product (but it is important to understand that these are not the same as products built by the various… actual product teams here at Microsoft). A very popular MSR project has been DryadLINQ, which itself builds on Dryad. To learn more follow the project pages I just linked to and I also recommend this 1-hour channel 9 video. If you only have 3 minutes, watch this great elevator pitch instead. You can also stay tuned on the official blog, which includes a post that refers to internal adoption e.g by Bing, a quick DryadLINQ code example, and some history on how DryadLINQ generalizes the MapReduce pattern and makes it accessible to regular programmers (see this post and that post). Essentially, the DryadLINQ framework (building on the Dryad runtime) allows developers to re-use their LINQ skills for creating/generating programs that process large multi-gigabyte/terabyte datasets across 100s-1000s of machines. One way to think about it is that just as Parallel LINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple cores from a single process on a single machine, DryadLINQ allows LINQ developers to seamlessly use multiple machines for their data parallel algorithms. In the former scenario the motivation was speed of execution, in the latter it is speed of execution AND processing large datasets that simply don't fit on a single machine. Whenever I hear about execution of parallel code on multiple machines on the Microsoft platform, I immediately think of Windows HPC Server. Indeed Dryad and DryadLINQ were made available for Windows HPC Server and I encourage you to watch the PDC session on this topic: Data-Intensive Computing on Windows HPC Server with the DryadLINQ Framework.     Here is one more question I recently received in an email- “Pinal, is there any ready made function which will display if the given date is the last day or the year, month or day? For example, if a date is the last day of the Year and last day of the month, I want to display Last Day of the Year and if a date is the last date of the month and last day of the week, I want to display the last day of the week. “ Well, very interesting question and there is no such function available for the same.   • Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

    Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported.   • MySQL - Installation

    In order to create a development environment for a project I am working on, I recently needed to install MySQL Server.  The first step was to download the msi. Running this presents you with the installer splash screen, detailing the version of MySQL that you are about to install - in this case MySQL Server 5.1. Next you can choose whether to install a Typical, Complete or Custom installation.  Although this is the first time I have installed MySQL and the Custom option states "Recommended for advanced users" I opted to carry out a Custom installation, specifically so that I could be sure of what features and components were installed. On the Custom Setup screen you can choose which components to install.  By default the Developer Components are not included, but I opted to include some of these elements. Next up is the ready to install screen and then the intsallation progress.   Following the completion of the installation you are shown a few screens with details of the MySQL Enterprise subscription option. Finally the installation is complete and you are offered the chance to configure and register MySQL. Next I will be looking at the configuration of MySQL Server 5.1.
