• Howto manage website and user permissions with apache on Mac os X

  I have lots of different websites in a Development directory in my home dir. While developing, files get saved under my username but websites configured under apache it's permission need to be set as _www user and group. What's the best way to handle this? Do I run apache under a different user/group? Do I run my development tools under a different user? Do add myself to the _www group? (seems like it doesn't work btw) I've just switched to a mac and I'm trying to find a smooth development workflow, so it would be best if i could just run the necessary tools, save some files and be able to test the website without much hassle. • General video performance affected on Mac OSX 10.5 (PowerBook G4)

  Hi all, I'm quite new to Mac and I just got a PowerBook G4 for free. I installed OSX 10.5 on it and for the first two weeks, everything was going kinda smooth even if this is similar to a P3. I'm not expecting awsome video performance but at least be able to watch some videos from Youtube. Yesterday night, I installed Office 2008 for mac and this morning, even after a reboot, my computer is way much slower that I used to know. I watched a youtube video and the framerate was 1:1. I also noticed it on flash adds, it's way slower! Is there anything that I can do to increase video performance, see what's the process list running and taking more GPU or CPU, what's taking more ram and stuff like that?! What do you guys, Mac pros, would do on an old laptop with OSX 10.5 Thanks!

  Questions: The Adobe fonts look distinctly clearer and much better than Arial. Any particular reason? Why does Adobe Caslon Pro show up among "C"s? (I know, Caslon starts with "C", but the font's name starts with "A", right?) Are more fonts like these available somewhere? (By "these", I mean non decorative, regular, and smooth) Why are there two versions of certain fonts like Adobe Heiti, which has: @Adobe Heiti and Adobe Heiti (which are not exactly the same, btw.) • Windows unrecoverable error wouldn't come out of Hibernate

  Out of curiosity... I was in a rush: I put my laptop into Hibernate (I don't keep a battery in it btw) Leaned it against a box in the laundry room Smooth tile floor means bottom of laptop slide out and laptop feel flat against floor, not super hard, but it wasn't carpeting so.. Next time I booted my laptop, I received this error for the first time ever: (not an exact quote) Windows experienced an unrecoverable error and cannot come out of Hibernate. Windows is restarting now After that, my laptop seemed to operate flawlessly. What do you think happened? Jared the electronics? I'm guessing an error like this would result of some sort of hard drive trauma, but fortunately, I have discovered none so far. I scheduled Error-checking for next restart.

• How can I configure Firefox to assume I have less memory?

  Firefox has a few different settings that automatically get tuned based on the system ram. This is all great if you're running nothing besides Firefox, but when you're running half a dozen apps at the same time and they all assume that they can take a decent chunk of mem it just kills the box. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with Firefox 14 Current workarounds: Running a Windows XP virtual machine with 512MB of ram. It actually runs smooth and takes less memory (including Windows) to run than having Firefox (or Chrome for that matter) run standalone. Install the 32 bit version of Firefox By installing the 32 bit version of firefox (apt-get install firefox:i386) the base memory usage is only about 50% of what it is with the 64 bit.

• Comparison between these video cards?

  Currently I have a GeForce 8600GT as a video card. I started playing EVE online and it is not that smooth (Apart from the fact that my Windows 7 is starting to become slow so it needs a format). Now I have these 3 video cards on my mind: 1GB Gainward GF GT240 PCI-Express Video Card 1GB Gainward GF9800GT PCI-Express Video Card 1GB Gainward GF GT240-GS PCI-Express Video Card I tried comparing them from nvidia's site: HelpMeChoose but the GT240-GS is not available for comparison. However, when I tried comparing the GT240 with the 9800GT, the latter was the winner. You must keep in consideration that the cheapest one is the GT2400. The 9800GT is in the middle, and the one which is not available for comparison, the GT240-GS is the most expensive one (about 6 euros more than the 9800GT). Is the GT240-GS the best video card from these? Thanks in advance for your responses.

• ubuntu: mumble 1.2.2 in Karmic

  Karmic only has mumble 1.1.8, but if I want to connect to a 1.2 server I need to upgrade... So I would like to know how I can upgrade to mumble 1.2.2 without messing myself up for later when I upgrade to 10.04 and beyond... I just want a smooth transition into the next versions of mumble. Is there anyway to upgrade to this newer version and either keep it in the package manager or make it not interfere with the natural upgrades the program will later recieve from the package manager? • In gnuplot, how to plot with lines but skip missing data points?

  I've got a value associated to each day, as such: 120530 70.1 120531 69.0 120601 69.2 120602 69.5 # and so on for 200 lines When plotting this data in gnuplot with lines, the data points are nicely connected. Unfortunately, at places over a week of data points can be missing. Gnuplot draws long lines over these intervals. How can I make gnuplot only connect points on consecutive days? Solutions that require preprocessing of the data are fine, as I already smooth it with a script. • Ubuntu Karmic, Maximize delay problem

  Hello, I have tried various ubuntu versions, Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 x86, Ubuntu 10.04 beta DVD, Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64, Mandriva 2010 x86, also a Fedora version and after installing compiz on all OS's, everything is working normal and smooth, even the compiz effects, cube, water, fire, wobbling windows, etc, except of the Maximize effect, where i get 2seconds+ delay for the effect. Cause it got me in a lot of thinking, why im getting this delay "problem", do you think there is any solution? or at least a way to decrease the delay? Thanks in advance. ;) P.S. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P300d, AMD Turion 64 x2 Dual-Core TL-64 (2.20 GHz), ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3650 512MB, 3GB RAM.

• Can't install Windows 7 on Acer Aspire M1100

  When I install Windows 7, everything goes smooth but as soon as it's done and Windows needs to reboot for the last time before getting the desktop, the computer stucks to Verify DMI Pool Data............. and then, nothing. I change the CMOS battery, I tried so many setup in BIOS, even load default settings... Nothing worked. The HDD light is not flickering anymore, no HDD activity. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work. It's just impossible to load Windows 7. I tried Windows XP and this works fine. I also tried the Acer (Futureshop) recovery CD and I get an Hexademical error message stating the install cannot continue. Is there a BIOS flash apps somewhere or a fix I can apply to have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my computer. Any takers?

• ISPConfig - Unexisting subdomain address goes to an existing one

  I am running Nginx/ISPConfig setup for about 6-7 months. Never had a problem and everything is smooth. But I just noticed that if browse to "blab.example.com", the page opens one of my wordpress blogs on the other domain. No matter what name I use for subdomain, Anything that I enter randomly "b53ks.example.com" still goes to that blog page. I have 3 or 4 different domain names and websites on the same server. But I think I misconfigured somewhere and that might be the cause of this. Lets say I have these domains: example-1.com, example-2.com, another-example.com If I go to anything.example-1.com or serverfault.example-2.com, or google.another-example.com the returned page is my blog at blog.example-1.com Note : I didn't set any subdomain in ISPConfig. Instead, I used "Add new website" for making a subdomain.

• My internet drops and will only reconnect if I troubleshoot it or restart my computer.

  My internet loses its connection and at the same time, and my speaker seems broken if that happens and my mouse will not be smooth as it was before it happens. It already happened before and I didnt mind it. But now, it's happening literally all the time. After startup, my connection seems okay but after some few minutes, even without me doing something, my laptop will just lose its connection. It says that it is not connected and connections are available, but if I check if there are connections where I can connect it shows nothing. Even if, there is actually a wi-fi connection where my phone and other laptops connect. They dont seem to have problem with it. Just my laptop. After that happens, I usually restart my laptop but I discovered that troubleshooting it would somehow repair the problem, but not all the time. It says that restarting my wireless adapter do the job. Are there any long term fix? I mean that could last long or totally erase the problem? I have Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, both enabled. On the services, I have Wired AutoConfig and WLAN AutoConfig on Automatic. Aspire 4750, Windows 7 (x86)

• adding remote ssh printer as local printer

  I have SSH access to a remote host (FreeBSD) that has a printer set up. I do not have root access on that host or any other special user rights. Now I want to print directly from my laptop on that printer (Ubuntu 10.10). The problem is that I don't know how to "import" or whatever the the printer, as it needs authetification from my user account (print quota limitations). E-mailing me the files I want to print or scp them every time is a pain, ATM I pipe the PostScript output manually to a ssh command, but that's also a huge working overhead. E.g. when I want to print a foo.pdf pdftops '/path/to/foo.pdf' - | ssh user@remotehost 'lpr -P printername' So, does anyone know of a smooth way to shorten this procedure? Ideally I would just want to use a printername instead of the whole ssh command

• How do I make an Illustrator file "higher resolution"?

  I was given an illustrator file, but all the curves on the artwork are jagged. I've tried "rasterizing" and exporting by increasing the size of the image. I don't know what else to do or what I'm doing wrong. My understanding is the beauty of Illustrator is that it's all done mathematically, so I can scale it up to infinity and it will be perfect (more or less). And that lines are drawn that way also, so they should be (or can be) infinitely smooth if they want to be. • RAID 1 not performing as expected

  I recently bought a new 320Gb hard drive for my computer to set up RAID 1 on it for some added security. Installation went as smooth as could possibly be (plug in power, plug in data cable, start up computer, Intel software recognized new drive, right click create RAID 1, done!). However, for some inexplicable reason, I seem to have strange test results when using BENCH32. On my old configuration, a single 7200 rpm drive, I achieved about 60 MB/s write and 70 MB/s read. With a new RAID 1 configuration, I would expect the write to be slightly diminished but read to be significantly improved (though not exactly double speed). However, with the new configuration, I am getting 90 MB/s write and only about 80 MB/s read. I should NOT be getting improved write performance, especially NOT better than read! What's going on? My system setup is: q6600 2.4ghz CPU 4Gb DDR2 667mhz RAM on board Intel ICH9R "RAID chip" 2x Seagate 7200 RPM 320GB drives in RAID 1 Widows 7 home premium 64-bit

• FBReader: How do I get it to display partial images?

  I've been using FBReader so far for reading e-books, but my problem with it is how it handles images. Whenever there's an image, it isn't displayed until all of it can be displayed (i.e. it won't show if you haven't scrolled down far enough) and scrolling isn't smooth because the image is treated as one line. Is there a way to change this so that it displays the partially visible images? If there is not a way to change this, I am open to software suggestions to use as an alternative (I'm using Linux). I have already tried Calibre, but I find that it's too bloated. It takes ages to start up, and I don't want a directory for all my e-books...

• How to fix audio/game stuttering in Google Chrome's Flash plug-in?

  I'm having an issue. Windows XP, running the latest Chrome 23 build. I'm using Flash 11.5 built into Chrome (Pepper Flash). It runs horribly. Chrome 22 did not have this issue as far as I recall. What a shame. YouTube videos stutter badly and after a while, they begin to lag and lose sync with the video. I disabled Pepper Flash and tested HTML5 video in YouTube and it was smooth as glass. Additionally, certain Flash based games are almost unusable now. The plug-in is using 100% CPU and it lags horribly in these games. Google/Adobe, please fix this. I shouldn't have to disable the built-in Flash plug-in (with added sandboxing security) and use regular Flash to resolve this. Short of waiting for an update to Chrome, does anyone have a better solution to fixing this? I am all ears.

• Ubuntu firefox: some web-pages stuck on loading

  Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 beta, installation went fine and all programs are working smooth. Just this one weird network problem. Some sites simply are not opening and loading forever. For example, google.com and youtube are working well, but ubuntu.com and many other are not opening at all, or are loaded partly. One thing i noticed is that on all of those pages on firefox status bar is message "Looking up for www.google-analytics.com" (or similar remote resources) message appearing all the time (even on this page, but it somehow has loaded and working). I should mention that i tried those pages to open on windows OS on this same machine, and they opened without problems. So i am guessing that it has to be some sort of network configuration problems on Ubuntu. What could cause such problem?

• ubuntu Grub boot hangs on external usb drive

  Hi, i just gave xubuntu another try and installed it ordinarily on a external usb harddisk. I have another harddisk installed inside the laptop that has Windows Xp on it. Now the problem: When I boot from the external drive the boot menu of Grub 2 shows up and i see all installed bootable partitions including windows. Now I select Xubuntu and wait. When the Xubuntu Logo shows up the boot process hangs. Now the funny thing. When the logo shows up I can unplug the usb drive and reconnect it real fast. Then the boot process will continue!!! • Strange issue with 64 bit OS

  So I own two versions of Windows 7, one is 32 bit, the other is 64. The 64 bit version came with my new desktop, and the 32 bit version came with my Laptop. I was doing a clean install of my laptop, and the install went smooth, Windows is up and running! However, after installing it I realized that I accidentally used the 64 bit installation disk instead of the 32 bit version. I confirmed this in the System Information screen, it says: System type: 64-bit Operating System As far as I knew this laptop was only a 32 bit machine. My understanding is that a 64 bit OS would NOT run on 32 bit architecture. Am I correct with this assumption? If this was a 32 bit laptop is there any way a 64 bit OS would even run at all on it?

• How to take a CSS animation from a browser, and export a GIF of it?

  I have the following CSS3 Animation going on: http://dabblet.com/gist/2884702. It's basically a simulation of a mirror rotating on its x-axis. Now, I wish to present that in a PowerPoint presentation. Since PowerPoint doesn't have the webkit engine, I want to extract an animated GIF image of that animation, and embed it into my presentation. The problem? No matter what I've tried, I couldn't make a reasonably smooth animated GIF. I've Googled and found many free software which claim to do the job, tried several, none worked as expected. I've tried IrfanView, same issue (also their site makes me want to vomit). So, is there a solution? Or am I doomed to not be able to display it?

• My Network adapter "D-Link DWA-547" is causing windows 7 to freeze up.

  Any audio playing, and sometimes the program i am using is constantly stuttering and freezing up. I have narrowed the offending hardware down to my: D-Link DWA-547 RangeBooster N650 Desktop Adapter If i disable it in the device manager everything runs fine and smooth. The card works, and gives me super fast internet. But the rest of the system hangs. I have tried installing the card with the drivers from the cd that came with it, i also tried the lates beta drivers from the d-link webpage, but the problem persists. What do i do? I am running windows 7 x64 on a asus p5b motherboard with 2 intel processors.

• Why is Firefox so slow and heavy?

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k. • What do light purple color mean in uTorrent

  I run uTorrent 3.1.2 in my Windows 7 PC. When I download one file, I see some purple colored lines under Files Tab Pieces. Below is an image of what I am telling (little resized); I think that the light green color indicates downloaded parts. But I have no idea about purple lines. The file is a streamable mp3 file. The connection speed is very low, about 5KB/s down and 1KB/s up. The done file size is not progressing in a smooth way (usually changes in KB are visible), it stays as it is for sometime and then changes to a size (changes in MB), and again the same thing. Questions: Why does this happen? What does the purple color mean? Thank you.
