• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Realtek RTL8192E Problems

  My wifi is not working. I have tried ndiswrapper with the XP driver but that still did not work. Please explain to me in layman's terms. I can run commands so if you tell me exactly what to put, i will put it. Basically, ubuntu is not showing a wireless networks option and when I ran some command yesterday it said the driver was UNCLAIMED. Please help. This is a wintec card with realtek rtl8192E chip on it. It is a desktop computer. On a 20gb partition, other 60gb is for windows(yeah its an old desktop). Use windows installer to install ubuntu(this is one of the dell desktops that wont boot ubuntu from disk). So any help is appreciated and I would like to get this done THIS weekend.

• Do I need a wifi card to have internet access?

  I am attempting to set up a wireless network on 11.04, freshly download today. The router is on and working. However, I do not have a wifi "card" (which I am assuming is a little USB-type thing that allows internet access, but correct me if I am wrong) and every time I try to type in the MAC address and everything, nothing works. I also get the "firmware missing" error when I scroll over the signal strength, which I have tried looking up but have been unsuccessful with completely understanding it. I guess my main question is do I need another little device to be able to use wifi on my ubuntu? I do have an ethernet cable but another person is using it and I do not want to be tied down to that cable. the problem is that none of the wireless networks show up, however they show up when I go into Windows mode on my laptop. I get an error message at the top saying "firmware missing" which I have tried looking up but still have no straight answer for.

• Which languages are more conducive to telecommuting, and also less concerned with pairing?

  I don't know that it may even make a difference, and I reckon if it did the differences would be cultural rather than technical, but if one were going to set out today (2011) to learn a language, and specifically wanted to telecommute (so they could live in two different places during the year), are there any languages whose culture looks more favorably upon telecommuting than other languages / cultures? For example, I get the impression (and I am probably completely wrong) that in the Ruby community, you are more likely to be expected to be on-site and doing pair programming (though I suppose you can do pairing remotely too). As a corollary question, are there languages / communities where pair programming is less important, for people who wanted to program in part because they aren't social butterflies?

  I've tried several solutions I found on the web, but didn't manage to solve a problem. Since today my laptop won't find my WiFi network, but neighbours' networks are suggested. Another laptop with U12.04 does find one. What do I do?   Websites like myspace and facebook establish relationships between distinct users using the "friending" ideology, where one user sends a request to be accepted by another user in order for them to have the mutual permission to do stuff like post messages on each others walls. Less restrictive than the "friending" ideology, Twitter and instagram use the followers/following ideology where you can subscribe to the tweets or posts of another user without their permission. Less restrictive than the "followers/following" ideology, email and calling someone on the phone allows you to directly contact anyone. Are there other ideologies that have been successfully implemented either in social networking sites or other real world constructs to establish relations between users?

• Remote Workers...We're Not That Bad!

  I work from home a lot – my team is located in different cities and countries, my manager is in a different city, and most of our work is done via conference calls, email and collaboration through Oracle Social Network. We’ve figured out how to be effective and involve team members, regardless of where we are all located. When I mention that I work from home, a lot of my friends will laugh, roll their eyes or use their fingers to make quotation marks around “work from home.” Their belief is that I’m sitting at home, eating bon-bons and watching television. The attempts at humor only multiply when they know that my husband also mostly works from home. So, it was with great joy that I read the Lifehacker article Why Remote Workers Are More (Yes, More) Engaged. I’m not going to re-write the article for you, but four highlights from the article include: Proximity breeds complacency –because communicating with employees sitting next to you is so easy, you may not do it well. Absence makes people try harder to connect – because you have to make an effort to connect to your team, you tend to pay better attention when you do connect Leaders of virtual team make better use of tools – when working remotely, you will use technology (many different forms of it) to connect with your team. This daily use of the tools makes you more proficient with those tools Leaders of far-flung teams maximize the time spent together – getting together takes effort, time and money, so leaders tend to filter out distractions when teams do get together. These points made me happy because I’ve seen the same things play out in my team located around the world. And I’m not saying that a virtual team is more effective than a co-located team – but my virtual team doesn’t have the option of filing into a conference room for a face-to-face meeting whenever we want. Instead, we have to figure out how to work effectively without meeting face-to-face. Am I more engaged as a remote worker? I’d like to think that I am. I’ve been on calls with colleagues at 3am – this would never happen if my only option was to be in the office. I can leave my “office” to pick up my kids from school…and I’m willingly back online after kids are in bed to finish up anything I need to. Oracle Social Network lets me use my iPad to engage with my teammates when I’m waiting at music lessons, the doctor’s office or any place else with a network connection. I feel like I’m more connected with my team, and I feel like I’m more connected with my family life. So yes, I am a remote worker, and I am engaged. If you lead a virtual team, I challenge you to increase the ways that you communicate to effectively engage your team. If you are on a virtual team, I challenge you to think about how you might interact with team members to keep both them and yourself engaged in your work. And if you have some great ideas on how to make virtual teams (and workers) effective and engaged, please share those ideas in the comments!   Trying to figure out the best way for openstack and MASS networks to co-exist. Assuming MAAS used 10.0.0.0/24 for provisioning of various openstack nodes, once openstack, with quantum, is deployed should 10.0.0.0 be used as management network, external network, both or discarded? Reason for the question being that I ran a deployment where openstack used 10.0.0.0 as its management network, MAAS dhcp and dns were active; however, I could only access VMs through namespace and was not able to utilize MAAS's dhcp to assign floating IP. (VMs network was through an internal bridge 10.10.10.10, and external bridge was using the same interface as MAAS.) Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

• What algorithm(s) can be used to achieve reasonably good next word prediction?

  What is a good way of implementing "next-word prediction"? For example, the user types "I am" and the system suggests "a" and "not" (or possibly others) as the next word. I am aware of a method that uses Markov Chains and some training text(obviously) to more or less achieve this. But I read somewhere that this method is very restrictive and applies to very simple cases. I understand basics of neural networks and genetic algorithms(though have never used them in a serious project) and maybe they could be of some help. I wonder if there are any algorithms that, given appropriate training text(e.g., newspaper articles, and the user's own typing) can come up with reasonably appropriate suggestions for the next word. If not (links to)algorithms, general high-level methods to attack this problem are welcome.

  I hope this is the correct stackexchange to post on. Seems to most relevant. I'm looking for more ways to monetize my site. I'm already using the usual Google Adsense, tradedoublers, ad networks, etc. What I want to know, is if anyone knows of a service/network out there (similar to tradedoubler), which allows you to accept (or bid) on campaigns (primarily CPM based). For example: I log in, I get a list of advertising campaigns that are available and the prices they are willing to pay or I can put a bid in with imp count and cpm rate. I'm looking for something ideally europe or UK based, but im open to others. Thanks!

• Creating an encrypted, web-based proxy

  I have moved to Asia where my internet connection is censored and I'd like to check my messages from social sites which happen to be blocked. As virtually all proxy servers are blocked in this country, I've decided to attempt to roll my own encrypted proxy server. Please note, the key word here is encrypted—if the sniffer sees anything like f@c3b00k or w:k:p3d:ia travelling down the wire I'm had. I have a website hosted with GoDaddy (Windows with PHP 5.2 & IIS 7). Is there any way I can set up an encrypted proxy through this service? If so, how, and what open source tools are available to use?

• Having good domain name and using domain aliases ( I use notlong.com)?

  I use only free servers and after creating my website: http://pundaquit.republika.pl I decided to make access to that domain by simple domain name . I decided to use domain alias http://notlong.com/ service and have simple domain name http://pundaquit.notlong.com The second advantage of using alias here was to be independant from my file host which I will have to change. I haven't found a better alias service like notlong, because notlong.com is easy to remember. After that I encounter many problems: * most of forums or social services treat notlong adress as a spam, * Bing so far hvn't accepted http://pundaquit.notlong.com domain and others. Is it another way to have good free domain name? How about the situation when your hosting server will inform you to expire? Only a lasting layer of domain aliases make you independant from the real file hosts.

It will take about 3 months to finish, according to a roadmap I make (based on current development stage) and about a month after that for bug fixing and testing. So I have to tell them a price. • Internet Timeouts with TP-Link TL-WN821N wireless usb stick - existing solutions dont work

  I'm running Ubuntu12.04 and I'm trying to get a TP-Link TL-WN821N to work. The solution from Internet Timeouts with TP-Link TL-WN821N v2 wireless usb stick didn't work for me. Neither has anything else... I've installed rtl8192cu as per instructions I found elsewhere to no avail. The symptoms I am experiencing are: When I plug in the device the PC can see and connect to wireless networks fine. The network I'm using has internet access and the signal strength is pretty strong. I can't ping and I can't browse the internet (timeout). Any ideas? I'm not sure what the next step would be or what information would be useful at this point.

• NetworkManager not populating resolv.conf

  I recently upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, and now NetworkManager isn't populating /etc/resolv.conf when connecting to wireless networks, when it had been working perfectly in 11.10. I'm not seeing any explicit errors in either the NM UI or in syslog. How do I diagnose what's wrong? Edit: If I try to run resolvconf, I get the error "resolvconf: Error: /etc/resolv.conf isn't a symlink, not doing anything." What should it be a symlink to and/or how do I get NM to populate it? This says the symlink should point to /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf, but that file does not exist on my system.

  I want to move some files from my PC to Nexus 7. The tablet is connected to my PC's USB port and it is successfully charging. Unfortunately, the PC is not detecting the devices - what I expected is to be shown the Nexus 7 tablet as external devices (like my USB flash memory). As the tablet is connected to the my home internet network, I have checked if it will appear in the "Networks" section but it does not. I am using Ubuntu 12.4 LTS. • AppFabric &ndash; where are all the monitoring events?

  When you’ve just gone through a setup of AppFabric and you’ve got some WF/WCF things happening, if you start looking at the Dashboard and you see nothing, it might be as simple as restarting SQL Agent. I generally don’t reboot my system for several days and after installing AppFabric the SQL Agent jobs didn’t start firing right away.  Yes, even running a boot to VHD, you can still put the machine to sleep (just logoff and click on Sleep)… So, after spending time looking through the SQL monitoring DB that AppFabric was configured to use, I saw a bunch of records in the [AppFabric_Monitoring].[dbo].[ASStagingTable] table.  This table is the stopping point before the SQL Agent job (or Service Broker in SQL Express) pushes the items to their final resting place. • Setting up ubuntu as a wireless accesspoint

  I have an android phone which doesn't connect to ad-hoc networks. I use ad-hoc network to share internet among my pcs. I want to setup my ubuntu laptop as a wireless access point. But I don't want my ubuntu laptop to be a router as described here as I'll be using suid3 as a http proxy. It should be just a wireless accesspoint which broadcasts it's SSID like a home wireless router. The ubuntu laptop has athros wireless card which requires athk9 driver.
