• Add a delay to OnContactDown events for Surface controls

  We're using the Controls.PreviewContactDown, PreviewContactUp, and PreviewContactChanged events to capture tagged items being placed, removed, and moved on the Surface, which works great in the Simulator application that comes with the surface. On an actual Surface if you moved a tagged item too quickly the cameras actually lose focus of the tag, assume it was removed, and then re-capture it when it stops moving. That provides a pretty poor experience for our clients. What I'm proposing is a way to override or create a new event that would respond to tagged item events, but not fire the event handler until after a delay... i.e. if "ContactUp" is fired, wait 100ms and THEN execute the event handler. Ideally we'd just be able to use an alternate attached property to define these event handlers, i.e. <Panel local:TagDown="TagDownEventHandler" /> And if we could get it to use ICommand objects instead of event handlers that'd be even better.

• Visual Studio 2008 Unexpected Error on Project Checkout with VSS 2005

  I've encountered an odd misbehavior of VS 2008's integration with Visual Source Safe 2005. Situation occurs when I fire up VS2008 when a project is checked out to someone else, and later they check the project back in, while I still hold the VS2008 open. If I at that time add a new item, VS2008 tells me that my action has caused a check out of the project and a new version has been loaded from source control. Fair enough, but thereafter I get an error dialog stating "Visual Studio has encountered an unexpected error" with OK at every subsequent action, such as save file and search text, making it almost unusable. This is overcome by closing VS (which pops the error dialog once more) and restarting. Is there some kind of fix or workaround to this (besides the obvious ones: "don't try to check out the project when it's checked out to someone else", or "get latest version if you think the other person may have checked the project back in")?

• One Model to Rule Them All - VS2010 UML, ADO.NET Entity Data Model, and T4

  I worked on a fairly large project a while back where we modeled the classes in Enterprise Architect and generated the (partial) POCO classes (complete with model-driven business rule validations), persistence (NHibernate mapping file) and DDL. Based on certain model attributes we could flag alternate generation strategies or indicate that a particular portion would be entirely hand-coded. There was a good deal of initial investment, but it paid large dividends over the lifetime of a 15 developer, 3 year project. I'm investigating doing something similar with the current Microsoft technology stack. The place I'm stuck is that class modeling is done with the VS 2010 UML tools, but logical data modeling is done with Entity Data Modeler. Is it a reasonable path to use VS 2010 UML as the "single source of truth" and code generate the edmx files based on the class model? That's the inverse of the common path to create the entity model and use a POCO generator to generate classes. However, a good class model can be used to generate much more than just the properties so I tend to view it as a better choice than the entity model.

In one of my form i have use rich text editor from the yahoo. now i want to store the data from that text area to mysql database. bcz user can enter anything in that textarea. as example user can enter many double quotes, or single quotes. so i need to store that data which may content many double quotes or many single quotes, so how to do that? normally we store by adding that data in one variable and then put that in sql then fire. but now variable contents many quotes and now i have problem to store. i can't remove that quotes bcz of my style which is generated by rich text editor. So how can store that data without affecting my styles of data.

• How important is PhD research topic to getting a job?

  EDIT: This has been closed and I realise that I may not have been specific enough with the original title. I ask two questions here: The general one (Does a PhD help get a job?) which has been asked elsewhere, and the specific one (Is it possible to get work outside of the specific research field?). Assume I've already decided going to do the phd. I'm just stressing about the research topic. Well, I'm one year out of university (Mechatronics engineering and Software Eng double bachelors), worked for a few months then got retrenched (yay economy!). It's looking less and less likely that I'll get a job worth having with the job market as it is, so I'm thinking about going back to uni to do a PhD. I figure that by the time I'm done, the job market will have improved and hopefully I'll have something on my resume that is more attractive than spending three years doing customer support for accounting software. So, my question is to people who've done PhD's. Would you say that they were worth the effort? How important is the research topic to future job-seeking success? The idea I have is a computer-sciencey/neural-networks/data-mining thing which I think is very interesting, but not a field I want to be in forever. My potential supervisor claims that employers don't care so much about the topic of the research but rather the peripheral skills that are developed through a PhD; time managment, self-restraint, planning and whatnot. How does this mesh with people's real world experience? I'd appreciate any advice before signing my life on the line for the next three years. See also: Should developers go to grad school? • jquery-Ajax call on tornado handlers waits for pervious ajax call to return

  Hey All. I recently started testing TornadoWeb for a home-project, which uses jquery getJSON function to call my tornado handlers. And found something strange, which i seek an explanation for. I fire an ajax request for Handler1 on tornado, and in some cases request for Handler2 is initiated before Handler1 returns. It appears from development-server logs, and firebug console-debugging, that Handler2 request waits for Handler1 request to finish, and then return. So basically, XHR call is waiting for earlier XHRs. They are supposed to be asynchronous/non-blocking right?? Or am i missing something. I would appreciate help from anyone who can throw some light on this.

• Record/Playback with AudioQueue on iPhone

  Hi, I am currently using Audio Queues on the iPhone to record and playback audio. What I would like to be able to do is to record some audio, allow the user to pause the record queue, and to seek back and forward through the audio to select a position from where they can start recording from again. I have got over the seeking issue by making the playback AudioQueueBuffer sizes small enough so that the play audio queue callback happens at a rate that allows the user to use a slider control to hear the audio as they adjust the slider back and forth. I think I can achieve the recording at a new position by setting the inStartingPacket parameter of the AudioFileWritePackets function that I call from the Audio Recording Queue callback. The trouble is this only inserts audio over the previously recorded audio. The file length obviously doesn't change so if the user were to go backwards and record less audio than before, the old audio still remains after the end of the newly recorded audio. Is there a way I can get the AudioFile to truncate at the point the user starts to insert the new audio, is there some other way I can remove the old audio starting at the insert position or is there a better way about going about this task? • How listen for UIButton state change?

  I'm extending UIButton with generic functionality to change certain appearance attributes based on the displayed title. In order to do this, I need to detect and respond to changes in the "state" property. This is so I make sure the appearance is adjusted properly if the user has set different titles for different states. I assumed I would need to use some sort of KVO like the following: [self addObserver:self forKeyPath:@"state" options:NSKeyValueObservingOptionNew context:nil]; But this does not seem to fire the observeValueForKeyPath:... method for @"state" or @"currentTitle". I assume this is because UIButton does not implement the KVO pattern for those properties. I do not want to just listen for clicks. Those events cause a state change, but are not the only potential causes. Does anyone know a way to listen to and respond to state changes of a UIButton? Thanks

My problem is I need to fire off some facebook specific code. This being This does not work via getURL. My question is how could I pass this line of code? I am not sure what to do here. • Bound Command not firing on another viewModel? What Am I doing wrong?

  Hi I cannot seem to bind a command to a button.I have a treeview on the left showing Country City etc.. And I tabcontrol on the right. do I This uses 4 viewModels rootviewModel-ContinentViewModel-CountryViewModel-CityViewModel What I am building is based on http://www.codeproject.com/KB/WPF/TreeViewWithViewModel.aspx Now on one of the tabs I have a Toolbar with a button "TestButton" that I have mapped in zaml. This does not fire! The reason is not firing is because I m binding the RootViewModel but the command that is bound in zaml is in the cityViewModel. How Do I pass the datacontext from one view to the other? or how do I make the button fire. I need the command to be in the cityViewModel. Any Suggestions on how I bind it? • Embedding PDF documents into websites

  I need to embed some PDF documents into a website. The last time I did this, I used a jQuery lightbox to popup an iFrame with the PDF document as the URL. The client's PDF viewer would then take care of the rest. Apparently though, that was a bit buggy on some other peoples browsers. I guess it was due to the large PDF file sizes and the effort it took for their computers to fire up Adobe. So I'm after ideas on how to go about this. How do you guys embed your PDF's into websites? Or do you just stick to adding a download link?

  I've always developed code in a SOA type of way. This year I've been trying to do more DDD but I keep getting the feeling that I'm not getting it. At work our systems are load balanced and designed not to have state. The architecture is: Website ===Physical Layer== Main Service ==Physical Layer== Server 1/Service 2/Service 3/Service 4 Only Server 1,Service 2,Service 3 and Service 4 can talk to the database and the Main Service calls the correct service based on products ordered. Every physical layer is load balanced too. Now when I develop a new service, I try to think DDD in that service even though it doesn't really feel like it fits. I use good DDD principles like entities, value types, repositories, aggregates, factories and etc. I've even tried using ORM's but they just don't seem like they fit in a stateless architecture. I know there are ways around it, for example use IStatelessSession instead of ISession with NHibernate. However, ORM just feel like they don't fit in a stateless architecture. I've noticed I really only use some of the concepts and patterns DDD has taught me but the overall architecture is still SOA. I am starting to think DDD doesn't fit in large systems but I do think some of the patterns and concepts do fit in large systems. Like I said, maybe I'm just not grasping DDD or maybe I'm over analyzing my designs? Maybe by using the patterns and concepts DDD has taught me I am using DDD? Not sure if there is really a question to this post but more of thoughts I've had when trying to figure out where DDD fits in overall systems and how scalable it truly is. The truth is, I don't think I really even know what DDD is?

• May a NSManagedObjectContext re-fault objects automatically?

  I am trying to create an application which allows background threads to update core data objects while the user might be reading the same data. My approach to this would be to use multiple NSManagedObjectContexts and then before a background thread does a -save: operation, I fetch the object the user is currently working on and fire the fault for all its properties and relationships recursively. This way I have all objects the user could act with in my NSManagedObjectContext without seeing the already updated values. But this can only work if the NSManagedObjectContext cannot decide himself that e.g. memory usage is too high, and starts faulting objects which I do not explicitly reference (other than through the NSManagedObject relationship). So the question is, can the NSManagedObjectContext decide that an object needs to be re-faulted, without intervention from my side? Thanks for your effort, Markus

  I am having a problem with GameQuery (jQuery) collision detection Tthey just never seem to fire?!? I have checked all the .arrow's exist and the same for the .bot's but it just never seems to call the function I have the below code in my main callback: $(".bot").each(function(){ $(this).collision(".arrow").each(function(){ alert("Test"); }); }); Do you have any idea why this would just simply be doing nothing? • Detecting (on the server side) when a Flex client disconnects from BlazeDS destination

  Hi all, I'd like to know whether it's possible to easily detect (on the server side) when Flex clients disconnect from a BlazeDS destination please? My scenario is simply that I'd like to try and use this to figure out how long each of my clients are connected for each session. I need to be able to differentiate between clients as well (ie so not just counting the number of currently connected clients which I see in ds-console). Whilst I could program in a "I'm now logging out" process in my clients, I don't know whether this will fire if the client simply navigates away to another web page rather than going though said logout process. Can anyone suggest if there's an easy way to do this type of monitoring on the server side please. Many thanks, Alex

• Javascript window.onunload fires off after Page_Load

  I have noticed that window.onunload event fires off AFTER page_load event which makes no sense. This behaviour is creating an issue for me - in my unonload I clear the session, so if the Page_Load first BEFORE onunload, there are errors on the page displayed. I would expect the javascript onunload to fire BEFORE Page_Load....is that the correct assumption? TO CLARIFY: Let's assume I am on page test.aspx, then I click on the link that goes to the same page (say I click on a menu), what I observe is that Page_Load fires first, then onunload fires off. Makes no sense at all.

  I have a User Defined Function (UDF) written in Java to parse lines in a log file and return information back to pig, so it can do all the processing. It looks something like this: public abstract class Foo extends EvalFunc<Tuple> { public Foo() { super(); } public Tuple exec(Tuple input) throws IOException { try { // do stuff with input } catch (Exception e) { throw WrappedIOException.wrap("Error with line", e); } } } My question is: if it throws the IOException, will it stop completely, or will it return results for the rest of the lines that don't throw an exception? Example: I run this in pig REGISTER myjar.jar DEFINE Extractor com.namespace.Extractor(); logs = LOAD '$IN' USING TextLoader AS (line: chararray); events = FOREACH logs GENERATE FLATTEN(Extractor(line)); With this input: 1.5 7 "Valid Line" 1.3 gghyhtt Inv"alid line"" I throw an exceptioN!! 1.8 10 "Valid Line 2" Will it process the two lines and will 'logs' have 2 tuples, or will it just die in a fire?

  I looking for a simple way to wire the homepage of my website so that it fires off a Push notification message to my iPhone every time someone lands on the page (just visiting in their browser). I'm aware this could become annoying! I currently send regular notifications to my iPhone using cron and curl to check sites / RSS feeds for change and then fire to to the Prowl API who in turn send it to my iPhone - like so: curl https://prowl.weks.net/publicapi/add -F apikey=$apikey -F priority=$priority -F application="$app" -F event="$eventname" -F description="$description" Could I do something similar from with the HTML of the homepage - call a script on my server which in turn fires a similar curl request above?   Hi guys, my first post here :) I'm having a small trouble with a small but boring problem. I have a view, with a NavigationController. I load in the NC a simple view. Inside this view there's abutton where I fire the presentModalView... in the main view, not on NC, but it's parent view: ABVIEW NC NEWVIEW new attach a presentModalView... on ABVIEW, so [abview present...]; No problem till now. When it's the time to dismiss, after the temporary window (let's calls it NOTES) disappear, my ABVIEW with all the subviews change Y position from 0 to 20, the same height of the status bar. I was looking everywhere and I'm sure it's a stupid thing, but I miss a bit of knowledge here and I have no idea where to find the solution. thanks in advance!

  I have a set of data contracts that act as wrappers to base classes that we wish to expose. A quick example is: [DataMember] public List<decimal> Points { get { return sourceObject.ListPoints(); } private set{} } We have some other properties that we have to massage the data first (we are converting object graphs and need to guard against circular references). The issue that we are seeing is that this getter will fire twice, once within the service operation, then again during serialization. This is causing two problems: We manually add to collections, since this is running twice the collections are filled with dupes. If an exception is thrown during the second run, it happens outside of the try/catch in the operation, and does not throw a fault. The service throws a cryptic timeout message, and the only way to see the error is via WCF trace logs.

  I have this situation: interface MessageListener { void onMessageReceipt(Message message); } class MessageReceiver { MessageListener listener; public MessageReceiver(MessageListener listener, other arguments...) { this.listener = listener; } loop() { Message message = nextMessage(); listener.onMessageReceipt(message); } } and I want to avoid the following pattern: (Using the this in the Client constructor) class Client implements MessageListener { MessageReceiver receiver; MessageSender sender; public Client(...) { receiver = new MessageReceiver(this, other arguments...); sender = new Sender(...); } . . . @Override public void onMessageReceipt(Message message) { if(Message.isGood()) sender.send("Congrtulations"); else sender.send("Boooooooo"); } } The reason why i need the above functionality is because i want to call the sender inside the onMessageReceipt() function, for example to send a reply. But I dont want to pass the sender into a listener, so the only way I can think of is containing the sender in a class that implements the listener, hence the above resulting Client implementation. Is there a way to achive this without the use of 'this' in the constructor? It feels bizare and i dont like it, since i am passing myself to an object(MessageReceiver) before I am fully constructed. On the other hand, the MessageReceiver is not passed from outside, it is constructed inside, but does this 'purifies' the bizarre pattern? I am seeking for an alternative or an assurance of some kind that this is safe, or situations on which it might backfire on me.

• Works using Django development server, but throws import error with Apache using mod_wsgi

  I have a Django project that works fine with the development server that comes with it. No errors are produced at all when I use "django manage.py runserver" and the app works fine, but when I try to use it with mod_wsgi and Apache the browser displays "Internal Server Error" with a 500 error code and it generates an import error in the Apache error log. Here's the error in the log: ImportError: No module named registration I'm using the Django registration module which is located in a path like this: /opt/raj/photos/registration I know that the registration app is in the path because I can fire up a Python shell, import sys, and get a list of paths using sys.path. Here are some of the paths output from Python shell: sys.path ['', '/opt/raj/pyamf', '/opt/raj', '/opt/raj/pictures', '/opt/raj/pictures /registration', '/usr/lib/python2.6',....] Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  i am in the process implementing SQLdepenency i would like to know in case of Dependency Handler exeuctues will it spun a different thred from main Process ? What will happen when the event handler triggers?
