• cannot reach munin port on other AWS instance

  2 AWS instances, in the same region but different availability zones, one is in regular EC2 and the other is in VPC, both have an Elastic IP, both are 64bit Amazon Linux AMI 2014.03.1. Both are running munin-node. The instance in the VPC is running munin-cron. I have added incoming TCP and UDP port 4949 to the security groups of both instances. On the munin node, I added an allow-line with the IP address (regular expression) of the munin server to /etc/munin/munin-node.conf. I bind munin-node to any interface using host *. Then I did sudo service munin-node restart. Then I ran netstat. $ sudo netstat -at | grep munin tcp 0 0 *:munin *:* LISTEN So the port is open there. On the munin server AND on the munin node: $ nmap AMAZON-IP -p 80,4949 | grep tcp 80/tcp open http 4949/tcp closed munin On the munin node: $ nmap localhost -p 80,4949 | grep tcp 80/tcp open http 4949/tcp open munin So from the outside, the http port is open (Apache is running) but the munin port is closed. The node can't even reach the munin port on it's own public IP address, but it can on localhost. I added port 80 as a sanity check, to be sure that there is network connectivity at all. So what am I overlooking here?

• Cisco IOS ACL: Don't permit incoming connections just because they are from port 80

  I am going much based on my memory and I may not be correct on all of this. On a Cisco 851 (IOS) that uses a BVI or a bridge-route (the servers on the inside are configured with static and public IP addresses). I would apply two access lists (both end with deny ip any any log) on FastEthernet4 (the WAN port). There would be one for FA4 in and another for FA4 out. FA4 out would have a line like access-list 110 permit 98.76.54.0 0.0.0.255 gt 1023 any eq http I think this means from 98.76.54.* with a from port of at least 1024 can connect to any other machine with a destination port 80. So, then I have to allow the response to the HTTP connection. FA4 in would have a line like access-list 120 permit any eq http 98.76.54.0 0.0.0.255 gt 1023 Now the problem with that is that anybody on the outside can set their from port to port 80 and then connect to any inside port that is at least 1024. How do we prevent this and require the incoming data to be a response to the outgoing data.

• Port mirroring on multiple switches

  So here is the deal, I have a server on switch A where port 3 is monitoring traffic for most of the ports on switch A. However I have other users on switch B that needs to have port 3 on switch A monitor as well. Is this possible? I have been reading about rspan but doesnt seem to work. Switch A: monitor session 1 source interface fast0/1 - 2 monitor session 1 source interface fast0/4 - 46 monitor session 1 destination interface fast0/3 (this works great for switch A, I need a solution to get switch B to also have some ports sent to port 3 on switch A for monitoring.) Onxx, All the traffic on switch A is fine, there will be about 10-15 ports on switch B that I need to send to fa0/3 on switch A as the destination. I have the switches connected with a ethernet cable with a trunk port on both switches on port 48 on switch B and A and port 47 on A connects to our sonicwall. So I am assuming they are daisy chained? What if I did the following: Switch A monitor session 1 source interface fast0/1 - 2 monitor session 1 source interface fast0/4 - 46 monitor session 1 destination interface fast0/3 Put all of the ports on vlan 10 because I made an rspan vlan 10 On switch B monitor the ports I need will say 1-10 monitor session 1 source interface fast0/1 - 10 monitor session 1 destination remote vlan 10 as a prerequisite I would have created vlan 10 as a rspan vlan on switch B. Switch A Monitor session 1 destination remote vlan 10 Would this work? By the way I am working with cisco catalyst 3560 switches.

• Not able to connect to port different than 22 - OpenVPN

  I have OpenVPN network with 5 clients. Computer with Arch Linux which hosts OpenVPN server, It also hosts virtual machine with Computer with CentOS which is also connnected to OpenVPN subnet. Windows 8 which hosts virtual machine with CentOS. Both of them are connected to OpenVPN. Last one machine is virtual machine with CentOS which is hosted by computer with Ubuntu 14( which is not connected to OpenVPN. All machines in OpenVPN subnet are bolded. All phisical computers are in different networks. The problem is that when I use nmap to scan Windows and it's guest virtual machine it's saids that host seems down. • RedStation.com is heaven for ddos attackers, How to file complaint?

  Sorry, I don't know where to open this subject. This is not the first time we have faced with a massive DDOS attack from one of servers in RedStation.com and even after we had contacted with their abuse department with it's log there is no cooperation and they don't even like to bother themselves about it. and we don't know how to stop such activity. Do you know how to file complaint against this datacenter? we could not be patient anymore and see they are not care about such things on their network ? it seems like they are heaven for attackers now since they close their eyes to gain more money. I guess some global organization is missing in this matter to investigate such activity and make sure providers are responsible for their services. • Help with IPTables - Masquerading + Forwarding, 1-to-1?

  I've got a clean Ubuntu Server 10.10 with OpenSSH, OpenVPN and vsFTPd installed. The server is running as a VM on the Hyper-V server (hypervisor), has two network interfaces mapped to physical adapters (eth0 and eth1), and a virtual interface with a direct connection to the hypervisor (eth2). The VPN will create a tun0 interface when a client connects. What I want is the remote user, connecting over VPN to be able to connect to the hypervisor (all ports, ping etc). The initial idea was to make the VPN create a tap0 interface, and bridge eth2 to tap0, but this didn't work, unfortunately, as it seems that the adapters don't want to go into promiscuous mode (partially confirmed by MS) At the same time, both the hypervisor and the remove client over VPN can successfully ping/connect to the ubuntu server with no problems. So my plan right now is to try doing some 1-1 masquerading, if possible. Basically, I want every request sent from the VPN client to the ubuntu server to be redurected to the hypervisor instead (with IP translation ofc), and every request from the hypervisor to the ubuntu machine sent to the VPN client (IP translated too). Only 1 client will be connected at a time to the VPN, so I can force limit it to a single IP at all times, if necessary. Is this the right way to go, and if true, how can this be achieved? It's almost like a special case of port-forwarding, except every single port on tun0 is forwarded to a machine in eth2, and every port on the eth2 side forwards to an ip on tun0 I guess it could be done with iptables, but I'm rather new in linux, so I can't do it myself... help? :(

  I'm trying to run from the live USB to install Ubuntu 13.10 on my Windows Machine (as I've grown a touch sick of Windows). However, whenever I boot into the LiveUSB session after a few moments the Unity desktop locks up (except the mouse pointer, which I can move). Is this something to do with the fact I've got an NVidia 580 GTX? I've heard of issues with Ubuntu and this card. I've also got an SSD, but given that it's booting from USB I shouldn't think that's an issue.   I am currently running Ubuntu as a guest vm on a Win 7 host via VirtualBox, but I would like to have a portable version of Ubuntu when I am not using my laptop. I am unsure as to the difference between the following: 1)LiveCD with persistence; 2)LiveCD without persistence; 3)LiveUSB with persistence; 4)LiveUSB without persistence; 5)Full-install. I have a USB flash drive (32GB), and I also have empty DVDs lying around. I know that persistence means that data can be saved, but I am unsure as to which option to choose. • PXE booting on old computer

  So my computer is not working - the disk is totally cleared, I've deleted GRUB and PLOP which I used to install new system, because CD-Rom is broken and BIOS is old (whole computer is old, it's Sony Vaio PCG-GR250) so it won't allow me to do it via USB and I got no floppy drive :) the only way is to PXE boot PLOP and install Linux from USB after PLOP has been opened. (I'm not a specialist but that's how I see it) I'm using Mac OS X 10.9 and I followed number of tutorials how to set up TFTP and DHCP server and I got PLOP here, but when I boot up with PXE it says that it found DHCP but TFTP timed out. Any help or alternative way of rescuing old laptop? Thanks in advance!

• iptables & allowed port refusing connection

  Can you see what I'm doing wrong? On Ubuntu Server 9.1, I'm attempting to allow traffic on port 1143 for a non-privileged IMAP host. Connection is refused when testing with telnet example.com 1143 but connection is allowed testing with telnet example.com 80 from my pc to remote internet hosted server. Both rules appear identical and are located near each other with no rules rejecting connections intervening in the rules file. • Using usbdrive as ram in ubuntu

  In windows it is possible to use usb flash drive as a virtual ram. I wonder if it is possible to do so in ubuntu? If it is, how could one do it? [Edit]: I mean Ready boost equivallent for ubuntu. I know that it is not a perfect replacement for ram and it is not advisable for longterm use. Is creating swap file in a usb flash drive similar to it? Will it demonstrate performance gains over a swap file in a Hard Disk Drive?

• Live CD boot/installation problem, blank screen - 12.04

  I'm trying to install ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64 from my usb stick. When booting from usb I instantly get a blank screen (with a grey box at the left bottom) I checked the live system with my laptop.works well except it also starts of with a black screen and a grey box at the bottom. I figure the Problem is my geforce gtx 570 since older versions of Ubuntu where only able to boot with xforcevesa and nomodeset. Unfortunately I can't change the boot parameters. I tried the alternate version for a text based install, but it has the same problem. If I press Esc in the alternate I get a message box with two buttons but no text. I would be happy for any advice on this matter

• Prolific PL2303 and Ubuntu 12.04 (english)

  I am having the same issue as posted here Prolific PL2303 and Ubuntu 12.04 (only in english). The usb to serial adapter worked fine on 11.10 but after upgrade to 12.04 it is not recognized in lusb. if i connect the device after boot and then run: dmesg | grep tty i get: [ 101.305275] usb 2-1.4.4: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB3 seems like it is working fine, but a running the command few seconds later adds the line: [ 107.788672] pl2303 ttyUSB3: pl2303 converter now disconnected from ttyUSB3 after this the device is no longer detected at all. any suggestions??

• Choppy/unresponsive keyboard and mouse pointer until suspend

  I had a problem where my mouse and keyboard would be choppy, the mouse pointer would work at 1-2 fps and the keyboard would keep missing letters as I was typing them. Since they were both USB I suspected there was a problem there immediately. Whenever I got this problem I would suspend the computer and start it again and the problem would be gone. The problem started appearing when I plugged the mouse and keyboard directly into the computer rather than the USB hub in the screen. I'm using a Logitech UltraX Flat and a Razer Lachesis, but I'm not sure if that matters.

• Printing to a printer connected to a wireless router

  I have a Netgear WNDR4500 wireless router which allows me to print wirelessly to a printer connected to it via a USB cable. However, the software used to print to it only works for Windows and OS X. I've seen the question Printing to a printer attached to a network USB hub, and tried the instructions it gave using my router's IP address, but when I print a test page it says copying data then says printer is in use. In the printer queue window it says not connected. How can I print to the printer using Ubuntu? Thanks.

• Can't boot from liveUSB when trying to install it alongside Windows 7

  I'm very noob at Linux and installing techniques. I want to install 12.04 from bootable usb flash alongside Windows 7 (also tried live CD but not working) but computer is not booting from USB flash or LIVE-CD and boots windows 7 (Acer Aspire 4750g) and of course I have set the BIOS priority in the right way. There is one important point to tell that I have installed Fedora 16 on my laptop successfully and now I have it on my system. When I was trying to install Fedora I got some error and searched about it and got this point that I should delete a .efi file and then installation went right. In this case , what should I do to solve the problem? (I also don't need my Fedora anymore).
