• My service does not start on Windows 2008 (it works on Windows 2003)

  When we install our product on Windows 2008 SP2, couple of services fail to start. After trying different things, we figured out that these service were able to start when "Log on as" is set to "Local system account". This service does need to run as a specific user because it requires access to secure resources. The service did run just fine under this special user account under Windows 2003. I am thinking the problem is related to UAC (user access control). Under interactive mode one can elevate permission by answering the security dialog box. How to do the same for a service? How to configure the service so it runs with necessary permissions? Thanks! Couple of notes I would like to add. One solution I tried is to execute the installer as administrator. The service does get installed. However, it creates another problem. An embedded 3rd party product and its files get installed with admin only rights. So we do need to run the installer as logged in user.

• Debugging in VS 2008 locks a stored procedure

  Hi everyone, I've got a strange one here. I have a .Net executable that, under the hood, calls a few stored procedures. For whatever reason, one of the stored procs hangs when I'm debugging. If I run the executable outside of visual studio things go fine, including this stored proc. It's when I'm debugging that this hangs, and it really hangs. If I stop the debugging session the IDE freezes and I have to kill it via taskmanager. I know which stored procedure has the trouble, as well as the actual statement within it that's the problem. It's calling an update statement that doesn't stand out as particularly special. I can run the identical statement (and the stored procedure itself) from SQL management studio wtih no problem. And, as I mentioned, the exe runs just fine outside the debugger. If I use the SQL activity monitor to see why things are hanging, the wait type says PREEMPTIVE_DEBUG. I'm not sure if that's helpful but if you need more info I'll try to get it to you. I've rebooted my machine (the SQL Server in question is on this box as well) and that didn't do anything, nor did rebuilding the executable. I'm scratching my head on this one and if you have any ideas what to check on next, I'm be happy to listen. Thanks!

• Visual Studio 2008 / ASP.NET 3.5 / C# -- issues with intellisense, references, and builds

  Hey all, Hoping you can help me -- the strangest thing seems to have happened with my VS install. System config: Windows 7 Pro x64, Visual Studio 2008 SP1, C#, ASP.NET 3.5. I have two web site projects in a solution. I am referencing NUnit / NHibernate (did this by right-clicking on the project and selecting "Add Reference". I've done this for several projects in the past). Things were working fine but recently stopped working and I can't figure out why. Intellisense completely disappears for any files in my App_Code directory, and none of the references are recognized (they are recognized by any file in the root directory of the web site project. Additionally, pretty simple commands like the following (in Page_Load) fail (assume TextBox1 is definitely an element on the page): if (Page.IsPostBack) { str test1; test1 = TextBox1.Text; } It says that all the page elements are null or that it can't access them. At first I thought it was me, but due to the combination of issues, it seems to be Visual Studio itself. I've tried clearing the temp directories & rebuilding the solution. I've also tried tools -- options -- text editor settings to ensure intellisense is turned on. I'd appreciate any help you can give! Thanks, Sean

• Selecting a good SQL Server 2008 spatial index with large polygons

  I'm having some fun trying to pick a decent SQL Server 2008 spatial index setup for a data set I am dealing with. The dataset is polygons, representing contours over the whole globe. There are 106,000 rows in the table, the polygons are stored in a geometry field. The issue I have is that many of the polygons cover a large portion of the globe. This seems to make it very hard to get a spatial index that will eliminate many rows in the primary filter. For example, look at the following query: SELECT "ID","CODE","geom".STAsBinary() as "geom" FROM "dbo"."ContA" WHERE "geom".Filter( geometry::STGeomFromText('POLYGON ((-142.03193662573682 59.53396984952896, -142.03193662573682 59.88928136451884, -141.32743833481925 59.88928136451884, -141.32743833481925 59.53396984952896, -142.03193662573682 59.53396984952896))', 4326) ) = 1 This is querying an area which intersects with only two of the polygons in the table. No matter what combination of spatial index settings I chose, that Filter() always returns around 60,000 rows. Replacing Filter() with STIntersects() of course returns just the two polygons I want, but of course takes much longer (Filter() is 6 seconds, STIntersects() is 12 seconds). Can anyone give me any hints on whether there is a spatial index setup that is likely to improve on 60,000 rows or is my dataset just not a good match for SQL Server's spatial indexing ?

• VS 2008 created shortcut doesn't show up in "Send To" menu

  I have a WinForms application built using Visual Studio 2008. I added a Setup Project to the solution to create an installation MSI file. I need the setup project to create a shortcut pointing to the application's executable in the users Send To Menu. This way when someone right clicks on a file, my application will show in the Send To list and be selected. I figured out under the file system settings of the Setup project how to add a shortcut to the Users Send To Menu. The problem is, the shortcut doesn't show in the Send To menu when you right click on a file. If I manually create a shortcut to my executable the application does show in the Send To menu. I have read many suggestions on the web to required registry entries for this to work. There is a VBS file written by Ramesh Srinivasan which inserts them. On every system I have tried this on the registry values already existed, so this is not the problem. It seems more to be with the shortcut Visual Studio (or the msi anyway) is creating.

  I built a Visual Studio 2008 setup Project wich depends on .NET 3.5. I added Prerequisites like: .NET 3.5, Microsoft office interoperability, VS tools for office System 3.0 Run time, .etc. After that Selected "Download Prerequisite from Same location as my application" in Specify install location for Prerequisite. I Built the setup and found mysetup.msi in Release directory. In a new machine I started fresh installation of my application. A dialog shows like this "This Setup Requires .NET framework 3.5 , Please install .NET setup then run this setup, .NET Framework can be obtained from web Do you want to do that now?" it gives "Yes" and "No" option - if I press yes it goes to Microsoft website. How can avoid it? I wanted setup take .NET Framework to be installed from same location where I put all setup files including mysetup.msi? In case of quiet installation cmd /c "msiexec /package mysetup.msi /quiet /log install.log" ..in log I can see only half way through installation then error Property(S): HideFatalErrorForm = TRUE MSI (s) (D0:24) [00:07:08:015]: Product: my product-- Installation failed. === Logging stopped: 3/23/2010 0:07:08 === How can complete I the installation without user intervention and without error using VS2008 setup project? • SQL Server 2008 - db mail issue

  Hello. I have two instances of SQL Server 2008. One was upgraded from SQL Server 2000 and one was a clean, new install. SQL Mail operates perfectly on both instances. DB Mail operates perfectly on the newly installed instance. On the upgraded instance, DB Mail does not send any mail. Of course, I am not positive that the fact this instance is upgraded has anything to do with the issue, but it might. The configuration of my db mail profile and account looks identical to my functioning instance. In the configuration of the 'alerts' tab in the SQL Agent properties i have tried selecting both DB Mail and SQL Mail to no avail. Both instances use the same SMTP server with the same authentication (domain with db engine account). All messages sent via sp_send_db mail and those sent via the 'test email' option are visible in the sysmail_allitems queue and remain there as 'unsent'. The send_status eventually changes to 'failed'. The only messages in the sysmail_event_log are 'mail queue stopped by login domain\myuser', 'mail queue started by login domain/myuser' and 'activiation successful.'. selecting from the externalmailqueue has the same number of rows as sysmail_allitems. i have tried bouncing the agent, the entire instance and moving the other functioning instance to the other node in the cluster. any thoughts? thx.

• ASP.NET application - Error when trying to connect to a SQL Server 2008 instance

  Hi everyone! Despite that I’m a regular reader of this great forum, this is my first post on it. I believe that this community can help me with the following problem that I have. I’m trying to publish an ASP.NET website over an IIS 6.0 (Windows 2003 Server), and I have some troubles trying to connect to the database. Curiously, I have installed another ASP.NET website into the same IIS 6.0 with the same properties and security parameters and can connect without problems with the same database. The application that works fine is almost the same that the one that can’t connect with SQL Server (actually is the same but with several modifications). I’ll enumarate some information related to the problem: S.O: Windows 2003 Server SQL Server Engine: SQL Server 2008 SQL Server accept remote connections? Yes. ASP.NET version: 2.0.50727 The connections via TCP/IP are enabled to the SQL Server instance? Yes. The corresponding user that I have in the connection string, actually exists into the database with the “owner” role? Yes. ORM Tool used: nHibernate I get the following error when I try to run the aplication into the browser: Error while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may occur because the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) In order to isolate the problem, I made some test. For example, using the web app that works fine I can connect without any problema with the database that uses the web app that can’t. With this evidence I concluded that the problem is within the web app and not into the SQL Server instance. I also google it my problem but sadly I can't find nothing usefull to solve it. If someone can help me I’ll appreciate that. Thank you so much for your time!

  I like to find a way to handle multiple updates to a sql db (with one singe db roundtrip). I read about table-valued parameters in SQL Server 2008 http://www.codeproject.com/KB/database/TableValueParameters.aspx which seems really useful. But it seems I need to create both a stored procedure and a table type to use it. Is that true? Perhaps due to security?   Hi all, What I want to do is render a SSRS 2008 report as HTML (actually MHTML) and send that as the body in an email. Has anyone done this? I've almost got it (I think) but I seem to have a encoding problem. The email shows up as what looks like some sort of base64 encoding. • Hello world/Console Project in Visual Studio 2008 64 bit

  So I am trying to run console 64 bit Hello World program. I have Windows 7 Enterprise x64 bit version. I have installed Visual Studio 2008 and have added all of components needed for 64 bit. I want to create simple console application. It turns out to be a problem. I have simple standard hello world project. I have created it using New Project - Empty project. I added main.cpp that contains this: #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { cout << "howdy\n"; } I added new configuration to the project by clicking on Config Manager and added x64 config. Compiled and it compiles. Tried running it and cmd.exe shoots up with following error: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is in correct. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.e xe tool for more detail. Press any key to continue . . . " Which set-up step if any I am missing. What am I doing wrong and how should I go about setting simple console hello world in 64 bit world. Thanks for any help

• Some images fails to load on Windows Server 2008

  I have an application running on a Windows Server 2008, that is processing uploaded images. Currently it successfully processes about 8000 images per day, creating 11 different sizes of each image. The problem that I have is that sometimes the application fails to load some images, I get the error "System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException: A generic error occurred in GDI+.". The upload only accepts files with a JPEG extension (jpg/jpeg/jpe) or with a JPEG MIME type, and from what I can tell those images are really JPEG images. If I look at the image file in windows explorer on the server, it can successfully extract the thumbnail from the file, but if I try to open it, I get the error message "This is not a valid bitmap file, or it's format is not currently supported." from Paint. If I copy the image to my own computer, running Windows 7, there is no problem opening the image. It works in Paint, Windows Photo Viewer, Adobe Bridge, and Photoshop. If I try to load the image using Image.FromStream the same way as in the application running on the server, it loads just fine. (I have copied the file back to the server, and it still doesn't work, so there is nothing in the copying process that changes it.) When I look at the image information in Bridge, I see that the images are created using Picasa 3.0, but other than that I can't see anything special about them. I haven't yet found anyone having the same problem, or any known problems like this with the Picasa application. Has anyone had any similar problem, or know if there is something special about images created using Picasa? Is there any image codec that needs installing on the server to handle all kinds of JPEG images?

• Visual Studio 2008 closes unexpectedly

  I don't know if I can really get an answer to this question, but it really irks me and I would like to know if someone has an idea how to arrive to an answer. I have a pretty large solution in VS 2008 that maybe every week/every other week whenever I click properties to get to the project properties the IDE closes without warning. After that happens it will close EVERY time I try and view the properties. At that point I try and delete the .suo file, I resize the IDE, I close the tabs within the project, I restore default VS Settings(when I'm desperate). Eventually 20-30 minutes later I can actually view the properties. I haven't figured out exactly what fixes it, seems to be different every time. Once it's "fixed" I can't break it again so I can figure out what "fixed" it. This seems to be project specific, because I can view properties of other projects while this project is misbehaving. I guess my first question is, does VS log reasons for closing unexpectedly? Can I find out what the offending reason behind this is? The main frustration is I don't know that cause, nor the cure. Any ideas?

  Hi all... we have a view in our database which has an ORDER BY in it. Now, I realize views generally don't order, because different people may use it for different things, and want it differently ordered. This view however is used for a VERY SPECIFIC use-case which demands a certain order. (It is team standings for a soccer league.) The database is Sql Server 2008 Express, v.10.0.1763.0 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 box. The view is defined as such: CREATE VIEW season.CurrentStandingsOrdered AS SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT *, season.GetRanking(TEAMID) RANKING FROM season.CurrentStandings ORDER BY GENDER, TEAMYEAR, CODE, POINTS DESC, FORFEITS, GOALS_AGAINST, GOALS_FOR DESC, DIFFERENTIAL, RANKING It returns: GENDER, TEAMYEAR, CODE, TEAMID, CLUB, NAME, WINS, LOSSES, TIES, GOALS_FOR, GOALS_AGAINST, DIFFERENTIAL, POINTS, FORFEITS, RANKING Now, when I run a SELECT against the view, it orders the results by GENDER, TEAMYEAR, CODE, TEAMID. Notice that it is ordering by TEAMID instead of POINTS as the order by clause specifies. However, if I copy the SQL statement and run it exactly as is in a new query window, it orders correctly as specified by the ORDER BY clause.

  I have a piece of cdosys code which runs correctly and generates e-mail with my SQL Server 2008 server talking to a MS Exchange 2003 Server. However the from name is not appearing on the e-mails when they arrive. Is there a fault in the code is it not possible this way? • Visual Studio 2008 linker wants all symbols to be resolved, not only used ones

  We recently upgraded to Visual Studio 2008 from 2005, and I think those error started after that. In our solution, we have a multitude of projects. Many of those are utility projects, or projects containing core functionality used by other projects. The output of those is lib files that are linked to when building the projects generating the final binaries using the "Project dependencies..." option. One of the other projects---Let us call it ResultLib---generates a DLL, and it needs one single function from the core project. This function uses only static function from its own source file, but the project in its entirety uses a lot of low-level Windows functions and also imports a DLL---Let us call it Driver.dll. Our problem is that when building ExtLib, the linker complains about a multitude of unresolved externals, for example all functions exported from Driver.dll, since its lib file is not specified when linking. If we try to fix this by adding all lib files used by other projects that use all of the core project, our resulting ResultLib DLL ends up importing Driver.dll and also exporting all functions defined in it. How do we tell Visual Studio to only try to resolve symbols that are actually used?

• Best Practice: Protecting Personally Identifiable Data in a ASP.NET / SQL Server 2008 Environment

  Thanks to a SQL injection vulnerability found last week, some of my recommendations are being investigated at work. We recently re-did an application which stores personally identifiable information whose disclosure could lead to identity theft. While we read some of the data on a regular basis, the restricted data we only need a couple of times a year and then only two employees need it. I've read up on SQL Server 2008's encryption function, but I'm not convinced that's the route I want to go. My problem ultimately boils down to the fact that we're either using symmetric keys or assymetric keys encrypted by a symmetric key. Thus it seems like a SQL injection attack could lead to a data leak. I realize permissions should prevent that, permissions should also prevent the leaking in the first place. It seems to me the better method would be to asymmetrically encrypt the data in the web application. Then store the private key offline and have a fat client that they can run the few times a year they need to access the restricted data so the data could be decrypted on the client. This way, if the server get compromised, we don't leak old data although depending on what they do we may leak future data. I think the big disadvantage is this would require re-writing the web application and creating a new fat application (to pull the restricted data).   Hello, I have two tables in a SQL Server 2008 database in my company. The first table represents the products that my company sells. The second table contains the product manufacturer’s details. These tables are defined as follows: Product ------- ID Name ManufacturerID Description Manufacturer ------------ ID Name As you can imagine, I want to make this as easy as possible for our customers to query this data. However, I’m having problems writing a forgiving, yet powerful search query. For instance, I’m anticipating people to search based on phonetical spellings. Because of this, the data may not match the exact data in my database. In addition, I think some individuals will search by manufacturer’s name first, but I want the matching product names to appear first. Based on these requirements, I’m currently working on the following query: select p.Name as 'ProductName', m.Name as 'Manufacturer', r.Rank as 'Rank' from Product p inner join Manufacturer m on p.ManufacturerID=m.ID inner join CONTAINSTABLE(Product, Name, @searchQuery) as r Oddly, this query is throwing an error. However, I have no idea why. Squiggles appear to the right of the last parenthesis in management studio. The tool tip says "An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected". I understand what this statement means. However, I guess I do not know how COntainsTable works. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

• SQL Server 2008 Stored Proc suddenly returns -1

  I use the following stored procedure from my SQL Server 2008 database to return a value to my C#-Program ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[getArticleBelongsToCatsCount] @id int AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON; DECLARE @result int; set @result = (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM art_in_cat WHERE child_id = @id); return @result; END I use a SQLCommand-Object to call this Stored Procedure public int ExecuteNonQuery() { try { return _command.ExecuteNonQuery(); } catch (Exception e) { Logger.instance.ErrorRoutine(e, "Text: " + _command.CommandText); return -1; } } Till recently, everything works fine. All of a sudden, the stored procedure returned -1. At first, I suspected, that the ExecuteNonQuery-Command would have caused and Exception, but when stepping through the function, it shows that no Exception is thrown and the return value comes directly from return _command.ExecuteNonQuery(); I checked following parameters and they were as expected: - Connection object was set to the correct database with correct access values - the parameter for the SP was there and contained the right type, direction and value Then I checked the SP via SQLManager, I used the same value for the parameter like the one for which my C# brings -1 as result (btw. I checked some more parameter values in my C' program and they ALL returned -1) but in the manager, the SP returns the correct value. It looks like the call from my C# prog is somehow bugged, but as I don't get any error (it's just the -1 from the SP), I have no idea, where to look for a solution.

• Mysterious double execution of Click handler after change to Windows 2008 Server

  After moving a Delphi 2009 application from a Windows 2003 / Citrix environment to a 64 bit Windows 2008 R2 environment (users now use RDP instead of Citrix), there are frequent runtime errors which are caused by a double exection of a menu item click handler. The first call of the event handler opens a modal form. Then the same event handler is triggered again and thus a runtime exception occurs since the visible form can not be made modal. • Visual Studio 2008 having problems with namespaces when used as type in Generic coolection

  I just upgraded last week from Visual Studio 2005 to 2008. I am having an issue with compiler resolving namespaces when I use a class as a type in a Generic collection. Intellisense recognizes the class and the compiler generates no errors when I use the class except when it is a type in a Generic collection declaration either as return type for a Property or as a parameter to a method. This is happening in my only project that is targeting the 3.5 framework, but changing the project containing the class to use the 3.5 framework doesn't fix the problem. Examples Compile fine MyClass myClass = new MyClass(); SortedList <DateTime,MyClass> listOfClasses = new SortedList<DateTime,MyClass> Compile error - Namespace could not be found public SortedList<DateTime,MyClass> ClassList { get; set; } private void DoSomethingToLists(SortedList<DateTime,MyClass> classList) Intellisense has no problem resolving the namespace, only the compiler. Is this a known bug or am I missing something obvious? Will SP1 fix it? I was able to create a new library containing just this class targeting 3.5 and am now able to successfully use this in both 3.5 and 2.0 projects. My guess is that even though I tried to change the target of my original library, since it was still referencing 2.0 projects there was some conflict.

• Compiling 32-bit Program on VS 2008

  I've been developing on VC++ 2003 on an XP PC but am now on Windows 7 and bought a cheap legal copy of VS 2008 to continue work on the same project. My product has to continue to run on customers' XP systems, so I'm strictly interested in a 32-bit executable. The first issue I ran into was the PRJ0003 error "spawning cl.exe". I had to add the path to this file to the VC++ Directories settings (it appears in both a bin\amd64 and bin\x86_amd64 directory, but I don't think it matters output-wise which I use?). The issue I now have (not counting a tedious cleanup to convert strcpy to strcpy_s, etc.) is that I'm not clear on whether I'm generating a 32-bit or 64-bit exe out of this. My project properties are set to a target of "Win32", so I assume that all is well. Is this correct? I have read some discussions about this, but it's never quite clear if they are talking about whether the compiler itself is running x64 vs. x86, or whether the compiled code is x64 vs. x86, and how this is differentiated. So am I doing the right thing to generate a 32-bit, Win32, x-86 program?
