  Hello, I am trying to install Windows Web Server 2008 x64 (have tried 32-bit, too) onto an IBM eServer 326m and am getting the following error message some time after the unpacking files section: Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed. I can repair the boot information using the Repair option in the WinPE bit of the setup, and it reboots into the Windows installation, so it has good boot data on the drive. Just to complicate things, the server does not have a DVD-ROM so I'm installing from HDD to HDD, both SATA, one an SSD. I've tried each drive in isolation, e.g. removing the SSD and installing from spindle onto itself, same error every time. Flashed IBM BIOS, too. Thanks for your help. Luke

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 VPS with 1 GB of RAM. I'm using the VPS to run SQL Server 2008 Express and IIS 7.5. I've noticed that SQL Server tends to use as much memory as it can, to the detriment of other applications (and this makes sense with a server is dedicated to running SQL Server). Should I set a limit? If so, what would a reasonable level be?

• Unable to browse Server 2008R2 from XP clinets

  We have just deployed a Windows 2008R2 server in our Windows 2003 domain. XP clinets are unable to browse in "entire network" and find the new server. It can be accessed by entering \\servername and it can be pinged by name and IP address. Users access shares without issue. Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled. Computer browser is running on the Windows 2008R2 system. Turn on Network Discovery is enabled. • Can Windows-Security-SPP block execution of .exe?

  We're seeing a strange situation, where some executables won't run from a Windows command prompt (running as admin). Just running the command (say, filename.exe) gives no response on the console. No errors, no output, nothing. If we copy over the same Windows .exe from a different folder, it "magically" starts working, and we see the default console output. (Happens both on Win7 x64, and Win2008R2 x64. Application is running as 32-bit process.) At the time when it accesses the .exe, I can see events in the application and system logs regarding Windows-Security-SPP, and it makes me believe that the .exe is being blocked from execution. Does this sound familiar?

Unfortunately, I didn't find yet an answer that exactly appropriate for me, so it's not possible to apply the solutions I find on the web. I find solutions for Win XP, 7, 2003, sql server 2005. But not for the above combination. I just don't why this problem started a couple days ago. I removed sql server and added it again, but no good result. • IIS FTP Server works locally, but cannot connect from remote

  I'm trying to setup an FTP server on Windows 2008 Server. I can connect locally: C:\>ftp localhost Connected to WebHead1 220 Microsoft FTP Service However, when I try to connect from remote, it doesn't work: ~>ftp x.x.x.x ftp: Can't connect to `x.x.x.x': Operation timed out ftp: Can't connect to `x.x.x.x' I've tried everything I can think of with the settings. The FTP server is bound to all unassigned IPs and listening on port 21. I've also checked "FTP Server" in the firewall settings. Nothing appears in the FTP log files. I'm totally out of ideas!

• Migrated SQL Server database suddenly in "Restoring" state

  Edit: This is still a live prob, less than an hour after trying RESTORE ... WITH RECOVERY. I backed up a SQL Server 2005 database and restored it to a new SQL 2008 instance. The restore was quick and successful. Everything was fine for an hour or so. Suddenly, the database is now stuck in "(Restoring...)" state in Management Studio and has a green arrow icon, and my application login is failing! Any advice? :-) Edit: This is a live application. If I delete and try again, the hour or so's data will be lost.

  I'm trying to debug an ASP.NET web application in this environment: Windows Server Standard 2008 SP2 x64 Single-core CPU 4GB RAM Visual Studio 2008 with Remote Debugger SP1 .NET 3.5 Web Application running in IIS in 64-bit mode The code I am trying to debug is a simple event handler with some basic sequential code. What I observe is that breakpoints get randomly ignored and VS often exits debug mode when I try to step through the code. The code is compiled in debug mode. I've tried all the usual steps: iisreset, reboot VM, rebuild solution, reinstall Visual Studio. Any ideas?

  I have been asked to truncate a large table in MS SQL Server 2008. The data is not needed but might be needed once every two years. It will NEVER have to be changed, only viewed. The question is, since I don't need the data on a day-to-day basis, what do I do with it to protect and back it up? Please keep in mind that I will need to have it accessible maybe once every two years, and it is FINE for us if the recovery process takes a few hours. The entire table is about 3 million rows and I need to truncate it to about 1 million rows.

  Hi All, I am trying to uninstall Exchange 2007 on a secodary server which has been decommissioned for quite a while (cleaning up after an old Network Admin). The only roll the server had was "Mailbox Role" (the primary server also has this). I have tried uninstalling using Programs and Features GUI tool but that hung on Mailbox Role Checks. I then tried uninstalling Exchange by running Setup.com /mode:uninstall. It has been stuck on 1% of "Mailbox Role Checks" for over 3 hours now. Is there any other options I have for uninstalling Exchange 2007 so the old server can be removed from the Exchange Management console?

• Cannot connect on TFS 2012 server through SSL with invalid certificate

  I saw the problem on some forums and even here, but not as specific as mine. So here's the thing, So I've configured a TFS 2012 server, on one of my personnel server at home, and now, I'm trying to make it available through the internet, with the help of apache2 on a different UNIX based, physical server. The thing is working perfectly, I don't have any problem accessing the address https://tfs.something.com/tfs through my browser. The address can be pinged and I do have access to the TFS control panel through it. How does it work? Well, with apache2 you can set a virtual host and set up the ProxyPass and ProxyPassReserver setting, so the traffic can externally comes from a secure SSL connection, through a specified domain or sub-domain, but it can be locally redirect on a clear http session on a different port. This is my current setup. As I already said, I can access the web interface, but when I'm trying to connect with Visual Studio 2012, it can't be done. Here's the error I receive: http://i.imgur.com/TLQIn.png The technical information tells me: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. My SSL certificate is invalid and was automatically generated on my UNIX server. Even if I try to add it in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities either on my TFS server or on my local workstation, it doesn't work. I still receive the same error. Is there's a way to completely ignore certificate validation? If not, what's have I done? I mean, I've added the certificate in the trusted root certificates, it should works as mentioned on some forums... If you need more information, please ask me, I'll be pleased to provide you more.   I'm looking for some ideas on how to disconnect, logoff, or reset a user's session in a 2008 Terminal Server (unable to login as the user either as it is completely locked-up). This is a production environment, so rebooting the server or doing something system-wide is out of the question for now. Any Powershell tricks to help us with this? We've tried killing the session's processes too, directly from the same terminal server (from the task manager, Terminal Services Manager and the Resource Monitor) with no results. Help!

I've just installed SQL Server 2008 with Analysis, Reporting, and Error reporting, as well as any of the other options on the installer. I also have a default instance of SQL server as well as a named instance. When I'm not doing development, I'd like to shut down these services conveniently. I'm thinking that a batch file would be good. What are the commands to shut these services down and release the associated memory and resources? It appears that: net stop MSSQLSERVER seems to stop the MSSQLSERVER instance. What about the other services?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 1.0 application that uses Forms Authentication. We are using Windows Server 2008. I need to lock down the site so that only certain users (in AD Groups) can access the site. Unfortunately, though, when I set the site to not allow anon users and use windows authentication, due to the integration of the site and IIS, it shows the user as signed in as their domain account, instead of allowing them to sign in through Forms Auth. So, I need a mixed mode authentication. I need the site to be only accessible through windows auth, without anon users, but once you are in, it needs to use forms auth only. How would I go about doing this the right way?

I realize that best best practice is not to auto generate unit tests, however I'd like to use Code Generation to set-up the basic skeleton of the tests. Now, I know Visual Studio 2008 already has the built in "create tests", however, it just creates a flat list of all the classes it's going to test... and it's not for NUnit right? Ideally, I'd like the code generation to follow the folder AND namespace structure of the assembly its generating tests for. Can you guys recommend any good tools which generate NUnit unit tests for .NET assemblies in Visual Studio 2008? cheers!

As a result, I am now reviewing all of our logins but I am not sure how it is possible. It seems that the application needs full read/write access, yet I still need to lock down writing to the tables so the user cannot login into the database and delete data randomly. Does anyone have any tips for setting multiple levels of security using intergrated windows logins, or can you direct me to any further reading?   Is there anything else that the code must do to sanitize identifiers (table, view, column) other than to wrap them in double quotation marks and "double up" and double quotation marks present in the identifier name? References would be appreciated. I have inherited a code base that has a custom object-relational mapping (ORM) system. SQL cannot be written in the application but the ORM must still eventually generate the SQL to send to the SQL Server. All identifiers are quoted with double quotation marks. string QuoteName(string identifier) { return "\" + identifier.Replace("\"", "\"\"") + "\""; } If I were building this dynamic SQL in SQL, I would use the built-in SQL Server QUOTENAME function: declare @identifier nvarchar(128); set @identifier = N'Client"; DROP TABLE [dbo].Client; --'; declare @delimitedIdentifier nvarchar(258); set @delimitedIdentifier = QUOTENAME(@identifier, '"'); print @delimitedIdentifier; -- "Client""; DROP TABLE [dbo].Client; --" I have not found any definitive documentation about how to escape quoted identifiers in SQL Server. I have found Delimited Identifiers (Database Engine) and I also saw this stackoverflow question about sanitizing. If it were to have to call the QUOTENAME function just to quote the identifiers that is a lot of traffic to SQL Server that should not be needed. The ORM seems to be pretty well thought out with regards to SQL Injection. It is in C# and predates the nHibernate port and Entity Framework etc. All user input is sent using ADO.NET SqlParameter objects, it is just the identifier names that I am concerned about in this question. This needs to work on SQL Server 2005 and 2008.

• Windows 8.1 Search does not automatically select first search match

  When I search in Windows 8/8.1 (start menu-start typing), it doesn't automatically highlight the search term. For example, if I'm trying to open the "Internet Options" panel and type the entire thing out in search, I have to down arrow or tab to the "Internet Options" search result. This is retarded. I'm used to Windows 7 style search where the first match is highlighted and i can easily just hit return. First match highlighting does work for other built-in things like "Control Panel", but it should work for all things in general, as it did in Windows 7 search. Anyways, if there is an option to enable this in Windows 8/8.1, I'd appreciate the tip. Thanks!

• Linux and Windows Server Setup

  Hello, I have an win 2008 R2 machine (a home machine of mine) that I am messing around with and learning the server technologies. I also wanted to try out oracle, and was wondering if its possible to setup a LINUX machine with Oracle, and have the two interoperate. What I mean by that is if I setup the server and my laptop on a domain, would it be possible to communicate to that LINUX machine and thus the Oracle database, and if so, are there any good resources on the setup? I was going to create a LINUX hyper v virtual... Any tips appreciated. Thanks.
