12.10 Unity doesn't appear when using Nvidia drivers

I've just installed 12.10 from scratch. Unity also started okay, but in a poor resolution. I found a setting (I think it was in "software sources") to change the display driver to Nvidia, and then I rebooted. When Ubuntu now starts, it goes to the desktop (I see a file that I saved to the desktop) but there are no other screen elements -- no Unity, no menu bar at the top, no window decoration, nothing. Ctrl-Alt-T and Ctrl-Alt-F2 work as they should, but it's kinda limiting... How can I restore the default driver? I guess I need a way to open those "software sources" settings again - or anything else that could fix it! I hope I don't have to type all this by hand. How can I install a proper Nvidia driver so that I can get up to 1280x1024? My old tricks don't seem to work, but perhaps they might if I solve #1...

Redisigning an old site, structure change etc

I have an old site built in 2006, it has around 200 pages and 500 pictures. Every single page is of course indexed as well as images. It is very well ranked for targeted keywords and I receive good amount of SEO traffic (I guess that's due the various campaigns, branding, ppc, etc..) Problem: Site has outdated design, pages and images have not so proper names, there are no heading and alt tags, it was built in tables, inline CSS etc.. Goal: Complete redisign site, use divs, change file names, add proper meta data, alt tags etc.. Question: How this can affect current SEO positions? I will redirect (301) every single page to the new one, build site map, but what to do with images? Do I need to redirect them also? Any other suggestion?

How best to merge/sort/page through tons of JSON arrays?

Here's the scenario: Say you have millions of JSON documents stored as text files. Each JSON document is an array of "activity" objects, each of which contain a "created_datetime" attribute. What is the best way to merge/sort/filter/page through these activities via a web UI? For example, say we want to take a few thousand of the documents, merge them into a gigantic array, sort the array by the "created_datetime" attribute descending and then page through it 10 activities at a time. Also keep in mind that roughly 25% of these JSON documents are updated every day, and updates have to make it into the view within 5 minutes. My first thought is to parse all of the documents into an RDBMS table and then it would just be a simple query such as "select top 10 name, created_datetime from Activity where user_id=12345 order by created_datetime desc". Some have suggested I use NoSQL techniques such as hadoop or map/reduce instead. How exactly would this work? For more background, see: Why is NoSQL better for this scenario?

How can I print-screen just one window and not my entire desktop?

I could swear I've always been able to do alt-printscreen to get 'just that window' but right now I am getting my entire desktop. Any idea why this would be or what I can do to get my ability to do small window screen shots? I've tried a lot of combination with the ctrl, alt, shift and print-screen keys but no luck, nothing happens in response. One option: shift-ctrl print-screen lets me do a selection using a cross hair to size out the screen capture but I don't know where this gets saved. I'm not being given the choice and it's not in Desktop or Pictures. I use an external keyboard, but I've tried using the laptop's own keyboard and no difference. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and the laptop is a Samsung Ultrabook 900 Update: I rebooted and it "fixed" it - for now. However this is not the first time I've seen this so I'm still curious as to why it happens, what I can do to fix w/o reboot and if other share the same problem.

Sometimes new windows don't come to the front when launched

I'm using gnome shell with new ubuntu for few days now and have experienced really annoying behaviour with new windows. Sometimes when I use another window and press e.g. Alt Ctrl T to open new terminal window, I don't get this window being brought to front. Instead I get notification at the bottom that "New terminal window is ready to use". The same is with Pidgin being integrated with gnome shell (via extension). Every time I get new message, window pops up but doesn't show. I need to either Alt Tab it or click the notification. Is there any way to have new windows being always brought to front, and remove those annoying "Window is ready" notifications? Can realtek 8192cu usb wireless card be used in ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0?

I do like the post RTL8188CUS Wireless USB Dongle doesn't work unless I disable wireless security . But when I plug my 8192cu usb wireless card, my computer screen is off. At that time I even can not use Alt SysRq k or Alt SysRq + reisub. I compile the latest driver of 8192cu on ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-34. In RealTek site, I download 8192cu drive which is for Linux Kernel 2.6.18~2.6.38 and Kernel 3.0.8. But now in Ubuntu12.04 my kernel is 3.2.0-34. Every time I plug the usb 8192cu wireless card my system halts. Now I try to blacklist both the system's rtl8192cu driver and the new 8192cu driver I compile, but the system still halts when I plug the usb driver. What about you ? Thanks!

I need to simulate the behavior of the keyboard shortcut (ALT+F4) using Terminal for a given application. If I open for example gedit and click ALT + F4 , then GEDIT will be xkilled. If I want to achieve same thing using Terminal, how should I proceed? GLSL per pixel lighting with custom light type

Ok, I am having a big problem here. I just got into GLSL yesterday, so the code will be terrible, I'm sure. Basically, I am attempting to make a light that can be passed into the fragment shader (for learning purposes). I have four input values: one for the position of the light, one for the color, one for the distance it can travel, and one for the intensity. I want to find the distance between the light and the fragment, then calculate the color from there. The code I have gives me a simply gorgeous ring of light that get's twisted and widened as the matrix is modified. I love the results, but it is not even close to what I am after. I want the light to be moved with all of the vertices, so it is always in the same place in relation to the objects. I can easily take it from there, but getting that to work seems to be impossible with my current structure. Can somebody give me a few pointers (pun not intended)? Somes importants shorcuts of Blender does not work on Ubuntu

In Ubuntu (and Mint) some important shortcuts for Blender does not work. Alt + right click to select an edge loop (heavily used on all 3D softwares) doesn't work, a useless menu of Ubuntu pop up to ask if the application must be closed or minimize. Ctrl + Alt + 0 to define the current view as the view of the camera minimize the application. This shortcut of Ubuntu is useless, it's faster to click on the minimize icon. Ctrl + number to apply a subdivision surface level do nothing on Blender, it's one of the most used shortcut of Blender. For the moment I stay on Windows 7 just to use these 3 shortcuts.

Setting uniform value of a vertex shader for different sprites in a SpriteBatch

I'm using libGDX and currently have a simple shader that does a passthrough, except for randomly shifting the vertex positions. This shift is a vec2 uniform that I set within my code's render() loop. It's declared in my vertex shader as uniform vec2 u_random. I have two different kind of Sprites -- let's called them SpriteA and SpriteB. Both are drawn within the same SpriteBatch's begin()/end() calls. Prior to drawing each sprite in my scene, I check the type of the sprite. If sprite instance of SpriteA: I set the uniform u_random value to Vector2.Zero, meaning that I don't want any vertex changes for it. If sprite instance of SpriteB, I set the uniform u_random to Vector2(MathUtils.random(), MathUtils.random(). The expected behavior was that all the SpriteA objects in my scene won't experience any jittering, while all SpriteB objects would be jittering about their positions. However, what I'm experiencing is that both SpriteA and SpriteB are jittering, leading me to believe that the u_random uniform is not actually being set per Sprite, and being applied to all sprites. What is the reason for this? Hotkey to shut down Ubuntu 10.04 from login screen

I used to run 9.04 on my server and used to be able to use Alt-T, Alt-S to shut the system down from the login screen. It was using a KDE login screen. Now I've upgraded to 10.04 and use the Gnome login screen and I can't see any keyboard shortcuts to shutdown the server. Is there a shortcut and if so, what is it? Further info - I would normally shut down the server without turning on the monitor, which was easy using the keyboard shortcuts. Doing it with a mouse is not so easy without the monitor being on.

VMware Player and Ubuntu 12.04 - Full Screen

I have installed VMware Player 4.0.2 under Ubuntu 12.04 (Final) and, apart from having to patch the modules, everything went smoothly. However, there's an irritating behavior when toggling full screen mode: toggling full screen (using Virtual Machine Toggle Full Screen or Ctrl + Alt + Return), minimizing the player and maximizing it again changes the resolution of the guest to some strange one and the player gets "nested" between GNOME3's taskbar as every other of Ubuntu's native windows. To switch to full screen again I have to Ctrl + Alt + Return twice. Can anyone please tell me if this is the nromal, expected behavior? Is there any way of "correcting" it? The host operating system is Ubuntu 12.04 (Final) and the guest is Windows 7 (both 64 bits).

GUI won't load, but the desktop background loads. Can't access the terminal

Having trouble with the Ubuntu GUI. I can log in just fine (see this)... everything looks normal there. But as soon as I put in my password, I get this. I tried a few different troubleshooting keyboard commands (ctrl+alt+t, crtl+alt+delete), and only the latter worked. I can interact with that window just fine, except I am unable to resize or move it. The first time I logged in, I got a dialog box that said, "Ubuntu has experienced an internal error. Send error report?" Doesn't say anything now. Yes I tried restarting it. Thanks a bunch, Michael EDIT: Trying to start a guest session leads to the same problem.

I'm reading David Flanagan's "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th ed". It only actually tells users how to run JS code on page 311, where users are told of the following solutions: "Client-side JavaScript code is embedded within HTML documents in four ways: Inline, between a pair of <script> and </script> tags From an external file specified by the src attribute in a <script> tag In an HTML event handler attribute, such as onclick or onmouseover In a URL that uses the special javascript: protocol." I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

When trying running Ubuntu 12.10 off a usb drive, I encounter an error while prevent me from doing anything else

The details are that I used Universal USB Installer version 1.9.1.8 from pendrivelinux.com to install ubuntu 12.10 onto a 4gb pendrive as per instruction on Ubuntu's website. However, after I boot with drive I am met with the following message: "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Pressing Ctrl Alt F1 doesn't allow me access and the options on the dialog box either send me through a loop returning me to the previous dialog or just leave me dead in the water. Pressing Ctrl Alt Del does however restart the computer if I am dead in the water, so ubuntu isn't COMPLETELY unresponsive... I feel I should mention that I'm trying to run this distribution on my netbook. I can't install it directly to the harddrive since I need my current Windows distribution for certain programs that don't quite agree with WINE yet.

Compiz features stopped working when an external monitor is attached

Running 12.04 on a thinkpad T520 with nVidia NVIDIA Quadro NVS 4200M graphics. Just updated to the lasted nvidia 310 driver. Everything works great. However, as soon as I attached an external monitor using nvidia twinview, compiz features such as scale (moves all the active windows in one page) stopped working, as well as alt-tab to list all opened programs. Any ideas how i can fix this? never had this problem with 11.04. I can post my xorg.conf if that's of use to you. Thanks much! edit 1: I am using gnome3 classic edit 2: alt-tab works -- compiz application switcher (by default for gnome3 / unity) will crash gnome-classic, by changing to "static application switcher" in compiz seemed to solve the problem, but the scale still does not work when an external monitor is attached.

Ubuntu freezes while working

Ubuntu on my laptop has frozen multiple times in last 6-7 months. Its not frequent but I can not relate the freezing to anything which I was doing. Today it froze again when I was taking notes in class - approximately at 12:00 PM. During the freeze both mouse and keyboard stopped working. I tried Alt-Ctrl-F1, Alt-Ctrl-F2 etc without any success. After that I waited few minutes & then I restarted the laptop. I checked /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern.log and it seems that it did not log anything (I was not able to understand most of it). Please let me know if you can find something unusual at around 12:00 PM. Is there any other log which might be useful? Here are the /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern.log files.

Video Bug in Ubuntu 12.10 MSI CX623 laptop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xyJkS8XjgA&feature=youtu.be I managed to take a video with what happens on my Ubuntu 12.10 laptop when I play with the volume and hover with the mouse over the slider and when I press Ctrl + Alt + D (show Desktop/minimize all) The real bugs are those in which the panel becomes transparent on the down side, exactly above the volume slider (and not only when that slider appears, but also when brightness slider appears, and when blocking my touchpad applet appears) and when I have a maximized window, more maximized windows or a non maximized window that touches the panel, while I use Ctrl+Alt+D (show Desktop/hide all normal windows). Is there a way to solve this bug? PS: The other bugs are from Record My Desktop. I didn't have the mentioned bugs in ubuntu 12.04, but I like more the graphics in 12.10.
