• Creating windows links on Linux?

  I'm running a SAMBA file store for our Windows users, and I'd like to automatically generate windows LNK files linking to other network shares that the user needs access to. I've done quite a bit of googling and I can't find a way of creating windows links on Linux, or through Perl. I did find a perl module that looked promising in CPAN, but it will only run on Windows unfortunately. If it's not possible to create .LNK files, perhaps there is an alternative solution people can suggest to allow the users to click on a file in one SAMBA store to be linked to a different SAMBA share? • Debian Squeeze locale settings

  I have a problem with a slightly customised Debian image that I'm trying to do some headless work on. The problem is that the installed locales list has been reduced to this: C en_GB en_GB.iso88591 en_GB.iso885915 en_GB.utf8 POSIX However, when I log in as root (with an otherwise as-vanilla profile), I find this: ~# set | grep LC_ LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 That's the only LC_ environment variable set, and presumably that means that it's being explicitly set somewhere (and given that /etc/default/locale only contains LANG=en_GB, I can't see any other alternative). However, I can't see where it is being set, and the fact that it's wrong is preventing, for example, postgresql-8.4 from installing. I know I can do an LC_CTYPE=en_GB apt-get install postgresql-8.4 to work around this, but I'd really like to understand where this setting comes from, and I really dislike the idea of installing an otherwise-unnecessary locale to make this go away. So: where does this LC_CTYPE setting come from, and how do I make it go away?

• Getting XAMPP to work with multiple version of PHP

  How can I install XAMPP to work with different versions of PHP? I use XAMPP because some of the scripts are buggy when run in WAMP. I use WAMP because it supports different versions of PHP. But now I would like to streamline it down to just XAMPP so that my web development would be easier to manage. Is it possible to configure XAMPP to work with more than one version of PHP? Or is it something that I have to look for in an alternative solution? Note: I'm running on Windows 7.

• XPS vs PDF. What's the status?

  XPS, the PDF alternative, seems to be almost dead in the water. That said, Windows 7 offers a built-in XPS printer and viewer. I believe Vista also offers a built-in printer. XPS seems lighter than PDF, perhaps it only appears so because of Adobe's bloated reader, but that's for another discussion. Is it worth it to begin encoding in XPS instead of PDF? Will Vista or above be able to read it without problems? What should I look out for?

• Are there any good apps for managing vCard vcf files?

  I've just got an Android handset and the import of the SIM contacts from my old phone has left them in a mess; lack of capitalisation, funny character substitutions, odd delimiters etc. I have exported the contacts list as a vcf and while I could manually edit this file, I was really after a desktop app that could do formatting, search & replace etc. There are Android apps that do this but, as much as I like the phone's UI, the prospect of sorting hundreds of contacts via it doesn't exactly fill me with joy. A quick Google just threw up lots of questionable download sites, hoping someone can suggest a lightweight alternative

• "tar -cfz" versus "tar cf - | gzip": are they different? (or how to improve a backup)

  I want to speed up my backup done with "tar -cfz", the common way to do it. But day by day my backed up files grow so it becomes slower. I was thinking to take advantage of the several cores available in my server and I was wondering if there is any difference between doing the backup with "tar -cfz" or piping tar to gzip ("tar cf - | gzip"). I guess that there isn't any difference, because the first spawns two processes (tar and gzip), in a similar way like piping it. If there is not difference, do you know any good alternative to do this, without going incremental? I'm looking at pigz too and it looks fine.

• Getting rid of Plesk on a VPS

  I've been using a relatively expensive VPS for hosting about 30 domains and I want to migrate to a cheaper one, without Plesk. Both use CentOS. My users will not care, they don't use Plesk anyway. But I will not be able to use it for creating new virtual hosts, FTP accounts etc. I'm not a commandline guru, esp. not in a server environment. Is there a free Plesk alternative for these purposes? I need to: Create a new virtual host with it's own FTP account Setup some basic FTP quota I don't need: DNS management (the new VPS service has an external DNS management GUI) Mail server management (I use Google Apps) Any suggestions welcome, from Plesk alternatives to "RTFM" or links to tutorials.

• Replace the broken file copying UI in Windows 2008 Server 64-bit Explorer

  Does anyone know a good GUI alternative for file copying on a Windows 2008 Server 64 bit edition. The built-in GUI has a hopeless interface and is bug-riddled which really hinders the ability to get things done safely. For example, often when moving a directory with subfolders, the directory and its subfolders will still remain, empty and not deleted. I've been through many of the common file copier and Windows Explorer alternatives, but either they flat-out do not work on a 64 bit/W2k8 machine or they do not actually fully replace the file copier.

  Hi, I need advice installing XAMPP with different php versions. How can I install XAMPP supporting different version of php? Before I formated my computer I used both WAMP and XAMPP for specific purposes.   Is there an alternative to trying to remember all the advanced search options? Like an actual GUI as we had for windows XP? As powerful as Windows Search apparently is, I cannot possibly remember all the options available. How is a mere mortal like my Dad supposed to understand and retain all this? • Problems installing Linux to IDE connected compact flash card

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu on some hardware (Netcom NC-499 board that contains a Vortex86DX processor). I am trying to install to a compact flash card attached to the board via an IDE adaptor, the aim being that the board will boot up and simply treat the compact flash like a normal hard drive. The processor vendor claims support for Ubuntu 10.04 but I am having problems installing it onto the card. I have been trying using a USB CD-ROM drive and the standard .iso image from the ubuntu site (md5 checksum works out fine so no problem there) but I have had no success at all. I have been able to do this with Ubuntu 8.04 but with no other version (9.04 and 10.04 desktop and alternative discs all fail). My question is what other options are available to me to try and install this? I have googled myself apart trying to find out but other than a few sites describing USB based installs using flash memory sticks for very specific hardware, I have found no useful info at all. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

• Keep context-configuration when redeploying via Cargo

  I am using Tomcat 7 to host a web-application that requires a JNDI datasource to be set up. Because this resource is specific to this application, I would like to configure it inside the application-specific context-descriptor in $CATALINA_BASE/conf/[enginename]/[hostname]/. I am also using Cargo from Maven to deploy the web-application to Tomcat. The problem is that when I do a redeploy with Cargo, it first undeploys the application, before deploying it again. When undeploying it, Tomcat deletes the context-descriptor of the application, so it won't work after redeploying. I could of course package the context-descriptor with the application, but I would like to keep any such container-specifics out of the .war. Another alternative is to configure the datasource in the global context-descriptor, but that too seems wrong, because the datasource is supposed to be exclusive to my application. Is my approach fundamentally wrong? What is the best practice here? Is there any way to prevent Tomcat from deleting the descriptor when undeploying?

  I have a Python 3 web app so mod_wsgi < 3.1 doesn't cut it for me. However, on my Ubuntu 9.10 installation there doesn't seem to be a package for mod_wsgi 3.1. Is there an alternative repository that has a package for mod_wsgi 3.1? There's a new Ubuntu release not so long from now, will it contain mod_wsgi 3.1? Some other distro ready with mod_wsgi 3.1 to recommend? Maybe my best bet is to compile it myself? From a quick google it looks like I only need the python and apache dev packages installed. Thanks!

• Sending mail in localhost:25 with Ssmtp

  I already have Ssmtp installed and working in a Centos 5.7 machine with Gmail configured. I can send mails in th shell without problems. Now i want to use the ssmtp to allow a web app (installed in the same machine) to send mails but for do this i have to find a way to ssmtp "hears" in the port 25 (or any other). There is a way to do this? There is another simple alternative to ssmtp who allows to send mail using localhost:25? Thanks.

  Hi there, I have recently installed wordpress but i would like to configure extensionless URLs .. I am using IIS7 but on a shared server. I presume i cna add something to web.config file?? I am little bit confused, in IIS7 and asp.net mvc it is done via code... but in PHP i don't think it is .... so the only alternative is to use a re-write module but i can't as I am on a shared server and can't install ISAPI stuff.. so I was wondering if there is a way to do the mapping i.e. when going to testme it would actually load testme.php Any advise really appreciated Thanks

What is your way to find software? Do you first go to a forum or google? Which torrent site? which P2P program, website or server? For example: "I need a software that have functions as a remote desktop and also lets you copy and paste (drag and drop - file manager). And after few hours searching on Google I downloaded LOGMEIN Pro2, but than I see that is just trial. So if I need to find alternative I will spend another whole day. Where to go? • Feedback on Using ZFS and FreeBSD

  I need to create a server that will be used solely for backing up files. The server will have 2TB of storage to begin with but I may want to add additional storage later on. As such, I am currently considering using FreeBSD + ZFS as the OS and file system. Is ZFS a reliable, trusted file system? Should I use it in this scenario? I have read that ZFS should be used with OpenSolaris over FreeBSD as OpenSolaris is usually ahead of the curve with ZFS as far as version updates and stability. However, I am not interested in using OpenSolaris for this project. An alternative option that I am considering is to stick with ext3 and create multiple volumes if need be, because I know that I will not need a single, continuous volume larger than 2TB. • Recommendation for e-mail forwarding

  We currently have a provider that we use to primarily forward our e-mails to both a hosted Exchange site and to outside e-mail addresses. We have a large # of forwards set-up (maybe 500). They work fine for us but the bandwidth costs are a getting pretty expensive (approx 80GB in email a month) so we're looking for a less expensive alternative (it costs us nearly $150/mo). I've looked at just hosting this here via a PostFix server and one of the nice front-ends available for it. However, I'm not thrilled with the prospect of being responsible for maintaining yet another server, backups, network connectivity, etc. So I'm leaning towards having this hosted by someone else if possible. Does anyone have any recommendations for hosting providers? Are there some I should stay away from?

• Mac Screenshot of a Specific Window without Using the Mouse/Click

  Hello, I've been researching for a day or two but can't find a method to take a screenshot of a specific window (possibly the only window) open at a specific time using an Apple script. Currently I have the script execute screencapture -T1 ~/Desktop/screenshot.png But what I want is really screencapture -wx -T1 ~/Desktop/screenshot.png But when I use -wx, it waits for a mouse click on the window. Are there any utilities, built in or not, that will allow me to do this? Thank you so much! (I'm sorry if this belongs on Stack Overflow, can someone move it if it does. • Alternatives for heapdumps creation with higher performance than jmap?

  Hi, I have to create heapdumps, which works nice with jmap. My problem is, that jmap takes very long to create the heapdump file. Especially when the heap is getting bigger ( 1GB) it is taking too long. One situation as example: When the server gets into trouble with the heapspace, I want to restart it automatically and create a heapdump before the restart. This works, but takes too long to write the heapdump. This way the server is down for too long. The heapdump creation takes longer than one hour. I know about -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError, but most of the time I can find the memory problem before the exception is thrown by the jvm. Is there an alternative to jmap which writes the heapdumps faster? A special solution for the example above would also be appreciated. This question is a mix between programming and system-administration, but I think I'm at the right place here.

This website is basically a back-end of an mobile online game, and it will: handle up to 10 million of HTTPS request and mySQL queries a day store up to 2000 GB file on the hard disk transfer probably 5000 GB data in and out per month it runs on PHP and mySQL have 10 million records in mySQL database, for each record there are 5-10 fields, around 100 bytes each I really don't know what kind of a server I need to handle these requirements, my question is: what cpu/ram do I need for a dedicated server or vps? what hosting companies are able to offer this kind of dedicated server or VPS? what about cloud computing? I've researched Amazon EC2 but it seems complicated to me. And I've contacted Rackspace but strangely they said Cloudsites is not suitable for my requirements. I wonder if there is other cloud hosting company. any other alternative method? thanks very much!

• Batch processing multi-TIFF in Irfan view

  I have to convert DPI of more than 5k Tiff images on a monthly basis from 200x200 to 100x100. I can do that in Irfan view using a .bat file that i have created.. the following is the .BAT file code @"c:\program files\irfanview\i_view32.exe" "e:\batch1*.tif /aspectratio /resample /tifc=4 /dpi=(100,100) /convert=e:\batch2*.tif" %* Where tifc=4 is Fax 4 compression However, the above code doesn't help me change the DPI for other pages except for Only the first page in the tiff thats getting converted to 100 DPI. Rest all pages are still 200 DPI. I am using WinXP Professional and Irfan View. Can anyone tell me what I am missing. Or any other alternative program where I can create a .bat file and run the batch process using Command line?

• backing up a virtual machine

  I inquired with the support of justcloud.com telling them that I have a vmware vm that I was wondering if it could be backed up while in use. I can back up the vm once it is shut down but I was wondering if their "shadow copy" would back it up while running. This was their response: Thank you for your email. I am really very sorry but virtual machines can't be backed up for a simple reason that they are virtual, they have virtual memory, not physical memory. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. • Best way to use my windows box as a backup?

  I put a 1.5 TB HD in my Windows 7 box and my main computer is a MBP. I have a lot of professional files/folders in a FireWire 800 external HD connected to the MBP and I want to use the 1.5 TB HD in my Windows 7 box as a backup for both the HD and MBP. Right now I am just copying files manually to the HD over the network and that's very slow and open to failure (not rsync'd.) Anyone suggest some appropriate solutions? Should I just figure out how to setup RSync on the windows box or is there a better alternative? Thanks!
