• Finding which tiles are intersected by a line, without looping through all of them or skipping any

  I've been staring at this problem for a few days now. I rigged up this graphic to help me visualise the issue: http://i.stack.imgur.com/HxyP9.png (from the graph, we know that the line intersects [1, 1], [1, 2], [2, 2], [2, 3], ending in [3,3]) I want to step along the line to each grid space and check to see if the material of the grid space is solid. I feel like I already know the math involved, but I haven't been able to string it together yet. I'm using this to test line of sight and eliminate nodes after a path is found via my pathfinding algorithms - my agents cant see through a solid block, therefore they cant move through one, therefore the node is not eliminated from the path because it is required to navigate a corner. So, I need an algorithm that will step along the line to each grid space that it intersects. Any ideas? I've taken a look at a lot of common algorithms, like Bresenham's, and one that steps at predefined intervals along the line (unfortunately, this method skips tiles if they're intersecting with a smaller wedge than the step size). I'm populating my whiteboard now with a mass of floor() and ceil() functions - but its getting overly complicated and I'm afraid it might cause a slowdown.

• Why does my laptop resume immediately after suspend?

  I seem to be having some problem with suspend mode. Every time I try to suspend my laptop, it just locks the screen. Or maybe it successfully suspends just to resume only an instant after. What could cause such a behaviour? I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 with the 3.2.0-25 kernel on a HP dv5-1178er Pavilion laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo). • How does mysql define DISTINCT() in reference documentation

  EDIT: This question is about finding definitive reference to MySQL syntax on SELECT modifying keywords and functions. /EDIT AFAIK SQL defines two uses of DISTINCT keywords - SELECT DISTINCT field... and SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT field) ... However in one of web applications that I administer I've noticed performance issues on queries like SELECT DISTINCT(field1), field2, field3 ... DISTINCT() on a single column makes no sense and I am almost sure it is interpreted as SELECT DISTINCT field1, field2, field3 ... but how can I prove this? I've searched mysql site for a reference on this particular syntax, but could not find any. Does anyone have a link to definition of DISTINCT() in mysql or knows about other authoritative source on this? Best EDIT After asking the same question on mysql forums I learned that while parsing the SQL mysql does not care about whitespace between functions and column names (but I am still missing a reference). As it seems you can have whitespace between functions and the parenthesis SELECT LEFT (field1,1), field2... and get mysql to understand it as SELECT LEFT(field,1) Similarly SELECT DISTINCT(field1), field2... seems to get decomposed to SELECT DISTINCT (field1), field2... and then DISTINCT is taken not as some undefined (or undocumented) function, but as SELECT modifying keyword and the parenthesis around field1 are evaluated as if they were part of field expression. It would be great if someone would have a pointer to documentation where it is stated that the whitespace between functions and parenthesis is not significant or to provide links to apropriate MySQL forums, mailing lists where I could raise a question to put this into reference. EDIT I have found a reference to server option IGNORE SPACE. It states that "The IGNORE SPACE SQL mode can be used to modify how the parser treats function names that are whitespace-sensitive", later on it states that recent versions of mysql have reduced this number from 200 to 30. One of the remaining 30 is COUNT for example. With IGNORE SPACE enabled both SELECT COUNT(*) FROM mytable; SELECT COUNT (*) FROM mytable; are legal. So if this is an exception, I am left to conclude that normally functions ignore space by default. If functions ignore space by default then if the context is ambiguous, such as for the first function on a first item of the select expression, then they are not distinguishable from keywords and the error can not be thrown and MySQL must accept them as keywords. Still, my conclusions feel like they have lot of assumptions, I would still be grateful and accept any pointers to see where to follow up on this.

• Boot Problem in Asus EEE PC 1015CX

  I am a newbie to Linux world, although I have previously worked on Ubuntu 11.04 for daily use (Net Access and simple recordings using Audacity). I am not sure, at what level I stand as a newbie. I bought this Asus Eee PC two days back. The model is Asus 1015CX. See the specs here http://www.flipkart.com/asus-1015cx-blk011w-laptop-2nd-gen-atom-dual-core-1gb-320gb-linux/p/itmd8qu4quzu8srr . I created a live USB to install 12.10. The usb booted fine. When I clicked "Try Ubuntu" option, it showed me a black screen with a cursor blinking. I waited for 15 minutes and had to restart using the power button. On clicking the "Install Ubuntu" button, the install process went seamlessly. [I have a Windows7 installed on one of the partitions]. i installed it alongside previous windows installation. The system was then rebooted for the first time. It showed the GRUB menu and I selected the first option Ubuntu. After showing the splash screen for a second, it began showing various messages on a black screen and then it struck on "Stopping Save kernel state message". I had to force shut the system using power button. Sometimes it just gives a blank screen with a cursor blinking and on pressing power button, some messages stating that acpid is doing something and stopping services pops up and the system shuts down. I tried booting with "nomodeset" and other parameters as directed in solution to previous such problems on forums. Also Ctrl+Alt+F1,F2,F3,F4,F5,F6..F12 is not doing anything for me anywhere. At installation, I checked Login automatically option. On booting into recovery several options comes up. Clicking resume just gives me a blank screen with cursor blinking. on dropping to root shell and remounting filesystem as RW, I am able to supply some command that worked for others. startx -- Several messages comes up with last one stating Fatal error: No screen found sudo service lightdm start -- Gives a blank screen with a cursor blinking lspci | grep VGA -- Shows some Intel Integrated Graphic... something I don't remember I had reconfigured xserver-xorg, lightdm, reinstalled ubuntu-desktop, unity. What should I do..?? Will going back to 11.04 work..?? Or I should leave all hopes of running Ubuntu on my netbook. Please help.

  I have an older laptop with a ADA hard disk I can't really buy a new one so I want to erase Windows Vista on my computer and only have Ubuntu so that I can have more space. How do I make it go directly to my blank CD? My Windows Vista is messed up and I can't even get into it. I want to download the new version of Ubuntu while in Ubuntu.   After upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04, when I log in, everything is ruined. It's all black, blank white icons, blank black icons on the start menu, and well, nothing works. If I open up Chromium, it looks as though it's in high contrast mode. Is this a bug? Any ideas what could have happened? Can I get 11.10 back? • Compiz command plugin won't register keyboard shortcuts

  Per this discussion I've enabled the Compiz commands plugin in order to try to bind some keyboard shortcuts to wmctrl actions. CCSM captures my keystrokes just fine, but no matter what keystroke I try or what command I bind it to (everything from my original intention of binding Super-1, Super-2 etc. to wmctrl -o 0,0, wmctrl -o 2560,0, etc., to binding Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L to gnome-terminal). Basic compiz shortcuts for window switching and so on -- even custom ones -- seem to work fine, but the command plugin doesn't seem to be working at all. I also notice the following symptom: when I open the keyboard shortcut tab in CCSM, the keyboard shortcuts often at first appear blank, though if you click on the blank button, the correct value is still there. Also possibly related, I've noticed that gnome-terminal doesn't seem to notice the Super key, though other apps (e.g. CCSM, Emacs) register it fine. Anyway, it seems like something's eating my keystrokes. Any ideas?

• Fails to boot after upgrade, stuck on winbind package

  I started the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 last night. Once it got the installing packages part I left the computer unattended the rest of the night. When I checked it this morning the screen was blank and I couldn't get it to turn on. So I cycled power, and now I get the "Ubuntu 11.10" screen with the dots underneath, but then it gets to a blank screen and nothing more. I can get to the command line in recovery mode; here's a list of the things I've tried so far sudo apt-get update - the very first repository it checked sat at 0% for a long time (network cable is plugged in), so I cancelled with Ctrl+C Thought it might be a problem with display drivers, so I tried sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx - this gave me an error saying dpkg has been interrupted, manually run sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo dpkg --configure -a this installed / updated a bunch of stuff but got stuck at Starting Winbind daemon winbind Restarted and tried sudo dpkg --configure -a again but it gets stuck at same Windbind step What else can I do to fix this problem?

  I'm a Dell XPS user with nvidia GT 525M with Optimus. When I installed nvidia I was greeted with blank screen. And the error in nvidia log was "Fatal error : No screen found". So after searching for the solutions I figured that I have to insert "BusID" in xorg.conf file. After rebooting I was again greeted with blank screen with error "Fatal error : screen already occupied". I don't what exactly the problem is. Do I need to blacklist Intel inbuilt graphics to nvidia in my machine or anything else needs to be done? Please guide me.

  I used Ubuntu with no problems and I upgraded to 11.10 and everything was fine. But when I did my first suspend I was not able to boot again, all I got was a black screen no bios screen, nothing just blank, I tried doing hard reset but when I power on again same happens. I tried ctrl+alt+delete F1-F12 but i think the keyboard is not working, also tried booting from CD but all I got was blank screen, the hard disk light is not blinking at all so i'm assuming it's not trying to boot. My laptop is Toshiba satellite with ATI Radeon graphics. Hibernate was working fine though. I searched the net for solutions but with no luck. Any ideas?

• How can you remove Unity from Ubuntu Netbook Edition

  In previous versions of Netbook Remix I was able to disable the netbook-launcher and just have a blank desktop. I liked the speed of the Netbook version but not the interface, this worked well for me. However, now with 10.10 and Unity I'm having trouble doing a similar thing. I tried removing netbook-launcher from the startup and tried uninstalling unity. The best result I got was a black desktop with a panel and a non configurable blank white background. Is Unity soo integrated into this version that I will have to just go with the default ubuntu installation?? In the past the default version has been slower then the Netbook version without the interface. Thanks.

It is very simple to restrict the input characters to [0-9A-Fa-f], but I would like to have it display with a delimiter between "bytes" so for example if the delimiter is a space, and the user types 0011223344 I would like the line edit to display 00 11 22 33 44 Now if the user presses the backspace key 3 times, then I want it to display 00 11 22 3. I almost have what i want, so far there is only one subtle bug involving using the delete key to remove a delimiter. Does anyone have a better way to implement this validator? • Ubuntu boots to black screen after failed upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10

  This happened when I tried to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10. I don't know whether the upgrade process had completed downloading and installing packages or whether it was still in progress, but I got a message The application Compiz has closed unexpectedly. At that point, my mouse stopped working so I switched to tty1 by Ctrl+Alt+F1 and rebooted from there. I then found that I could not boot into Ubuntu any more. My screen stayed first purple then black. I went back to tty1 and it said I was running 12.10. I tried some suggestions in this thread on Ubuntuforums: Wubi blank purple screen than blank black screen and this one: How to set NOMODESET and other kernel boot options in grub2 but nothing seemed to work. I can boot Windows as normal. I am using Wubi on Windows7. My laptop is a Lenovo T410i with NVIDA NVS 3100m

(Last time I ran updates before was about a week ago). After the updates were installed, it asked me to reboot. So I rebooted it, and then it stopped at login prompt (as a command line, with no windows).   I'm trying to Install the latest 12.10 Desktop. I have burned the iso file onto a DVD using an ISO burner. I then reboot my computer, and use the boot menu, I choose the DVD and it asks me if I want to try it, install it, or check for defects. Whichever one I choose my screen goes blank and for a bit you can hear my DVD burner, but then it stops and the screen goes completely blank and doesn't so anything. I am using a new HP Pavilion model P7-1455 running windows 8. What is wrong? How can I fix this?

• Installing Ubuntu 12.10 on new computer with Windows 8

  I recently purchased a new HP computer (P6-2330) with Windows 8. I have tried unsuccessfully to install Ubuntu 12.10 64bit alongside Windows 8. The computer is UEFI with Secure Boot enabled. I've tried following the instruction at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI. I am able to get the GRUB menu to show up. However, as soon as I press Enter on either Try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu, the screen goes blank. Nothing works at all, not even the Num Lock or Caps Lock keys on the keyboard. I have to use the power button to restart the computer. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get Ubuntu installed? To clarify, I have actually tried installing using both a USB stick and a DVD. The USB stick gave a blank screen, while the DVD gave the error message "Empty Security Header" after pressing Enter at the GRUB screen.

• Reduce boot time between grub menu and login screen

  I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS version which used to boot fast at beginning but not i loads very slow. I searched for this but can't find suitable answers. so i want to reduce my boot time which is now around 1min 12sec (boot chart) overall but i noticed its taking a longtime after grub menu and before login screen. A Blank screen appears after grub waiting... then login screen appears. I want to know a way to reduce that blank screen time(or if possible remove) and get login screen as fast as possible. I already removed several of my startup applications. Getting desktop after log-in is fast. I don't want to remove unity and install light desktop envinorments like Xfce and Lxde. • Key binding in Compiz no longer works

  I have a key binding set in CompizConfig settings manager that runs this command: sleep .5 && xset -display :0.0 dpms force off I have it attached to Super+~. It's worked fine for years. Now, suddenly, it stopped working. When I open CompizConfig the key binding is blank. I set it again, close CompizConfig, and it doesn't work. So I open CompizConfig again, and the key binding is blank again. It won't save what I set it to. How do I get my key binding and command to work, and stay working.

• StringBuffer behavior in LWJGL

  Okay, I've been programming in Java for about ten years, but am entirely new to LWJGL. I have a specific problem whilst attempting to create a text console. I have built a class meant to abstract input polling to it, which (in theory) captures key presses from the Keyboard object and appends them to a StringBuilder/StringBuffer, then retrieves the completed string after receiving the ENTER key. The problem is, after I trigger the String return (currently with ESCAPE), and attempt to print it to System.out, I consistently get a blank line. I can get an appropriate string length, and I can even sample a single character out of it and get complete accuracy, but it never prints the actual string. I could swear that LWJGL slipped some kind of thread-safety trick in while I wasn't looking. • How do you create links with a NULL or # in Drupal?

  Trying to create folders for links where the parent has no content, it's just a folder. Need to be able to insert #, but Drupal is saying it's not a link. Just want the user to click it and nothing happen, the child of that menu item will already be being displayed without a click. Version: Drupal 6 (appears worked in D5) I've attempted the following: '', #, <#>, empty, <empty>, null, <null>, blank, <blank>, <none>, none, <answer> ...just kidding. • How can you remove Unity?

  In previous versions of Netbook Remix I was able to disable the netbook-launcher and just have a blank desktop. I liked the speed of the Netbook version but not the interface, this worked well for me. However, now with 10.10 and Unity I'm having trouble doing a similar thing. I tried removing netbook-launcher from the startup and tried uninstalling unity. The best result I got was a black desktop with a panel and a non configurable blank white background. Is Unity soo integrated into this version that I will have to just go with the default ubuntu installation?? In the past the default version has been slower then the Netbook version without the interface. Thanks.

• How can I download and make an Ubuntu CD from inside a booted Ubuntu Live CD?

  I have an older laptop with a ADA hard disk I can't really buy a new one so I want to erase Windows Vista on my computer and only have Ubuntu so that I can have more space. How do I make it go directly to my blank CD? My Windows Vista is messed up and I can't even get into it. I want to download the new version of Ubuntu while in Ubuntu. I downloaded it but it didn't go directly to the blank CD. I tried to copy all of Ubuntu onto the CD once it was downloaded but it says there was an error while copying. What should I do?
