  • Setting up Virtual Hosts with Apache on Windows 2008 server for multiple sites. Complicated setup,

    Hey guys! I am setting up apache on my windows 2008 server at my home. It will serve 2 functions. Subversion hosting to allow me and some others to manage company documents with version control Local website hosting for web development. Will need to run several websites since I generally work on more then one site at a time. Heres what I have done so far. I set up subversion and apache 2.2 using some walk troughs. I changed the default port to 1337. (im a nerd) Using dyndns.com I created a domain to forward to my home ip which is dynamic. ( company.gotdns.org) I then went into my DNS for my company.com and added a record to point repo.company.com to company.gotdns.org At this point people who need access to my file repository can access by going to repo.company.com/repo which is good so far. My question comes on the next step, setting up virtual hosts with apache. Ideally I would like to have my local website be viewable by some others in the company from their homes. So, say I am working on site1, I would like to have them be able to view this by going site1.roeland.bythepixel.com. At the same time, I would like to have site10.wouter.bythepixel.com go to his local setup for site10. What I have done for this: I went into my DNS for company.com and added a record to point roeland.company.com to company.gotdns.org (which translates to my ip). I added code to my httpd-vhosts.conf (listed at bottom) I added code to my host file (listed at bottom) Hah, so of course this doenst work as excepted.. going to site1.roeland.bythepixel.com doesnt bring up my test1 site. Could anyone point me where I may be going wrong?   • Apache and MySQL taking all the memory? Maximum connections?

    I've a had one of our servers going down (network wise) but keeping its uptime (so looks the server is not losing its power) recently. I've asked my hosting company to investigate and I've been told, after investigation, that Apache and MySQL were at all time using 80% of the memory and peaking at 95% and that I might be needing to add some more RAM to the server. One of their justifications to adding more RAM was that I was using the default max connections setting (125 for MySQL and 150 for Apache) and that for handling those 150 simultaneous connections, I would need at least 3Gb of memory instead of the 1Gb I have at the moment. Now, I understand that tweaking the max connections might be better than me leaving the default setting although I didn't feel it was a concern at the moment, having had servers with the same configuration handle more traffic than the current 1 or 2 visitors before the lunch, telling myself I'd tweak it depending on the visits pattern later. I've also always known Apache was more memory hungry under default settings than its competitor such as nginx and lighttpd. Nonetheless, looking at the stats of my machine, I'm trying to see how my hosting company got those numbers. I'm getting: # free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1000 944 56 0 148 725 -/+ buffers/cache: 71 929 Swap: 1953 0 1953 Which I guess means that yes, the server is reserving around 95% of its memory at the moment but I also thought it meant that only 71 out of the 1000 total were really used by the applications at the moment looking a the buffers/cache row.   • Cloud Agnostic Architecture?

    Hi, I'm doing some architecture work on a new solution which will initially run in Windows Azure. However I'd like the solution (or at least the architecture/design) to be Cloud Agnostic (to whatever extent is realistic). Has anyone done any work on this front or seen any good white papers/blog posts? Our highlevel architecture will consist of a payload being sent to a web service (WCF for instance), this will be dumped on a queue (for arguments sake) and a worker process will grab messages off this queue and proccess them. There will be a database of customer information which we'd ideally like to keep out of the cloud however there are obvious performance considerations. Keen to hear other's thoughts. Cheers Dave

    I am evaluating cloud e-mail solutions based upon: Google Apps for Education Microsoft Live@edu I work for a University and we currently have an institutional portal (based on uPortal). We currently have our local IMAP server and webmail client fully integrated with the portal. We would like to replicate the current portal e-mail experience with the new e-mail services. At present users can see a snapshot of their inbox in the portal and click through into the appropriate place in the webmail client. We expect that we need to solve similar problems when integrating with the cloud based e-mail solutions. We need to solve the single sign-on (SSO) problem. We need to be able to access the inbox messages on the users behalf. (e.g. proxy authentication) Does anybody have an experience or advice on this? Many thanks, Mark

  • jQuery Cloud Zoom Plugin and image zoom being actived by mouseenter or mouseover

    I am using the jQuery Cloud Zoom Plugin and i need to add the "mouseenter" or "mouseover" event to activate the zoom when the user put the mouse over the thumbs. So i have made this change in the line 359 of the file cloud-zoom.1.0.2.js (Version 1.0.2) $(this).bind('mouseenter click', $(this) ... It works, but if i pass the mouse quickly over the thumbs the "Loading" text doesn't disapear. Someone knows what i have to change to solve this? Thanks for any help!

    I kind of know why glue records are needed (cyclic dependencies), but when are they needed? Are they only needed when setting a domain's nameservers to my own machine on the internet - like "ns1.mydomainonmyserver.com" ?? Is there any need / point in making glue records when using external / hosting provider's nameservers? Beginner question sorry (T_T)

  • @font-face and CSS3 working locally but not on hosting

    Hello chaps and chapettes, I've got a bit of a strange one for you (so to speak). I've devised a little 'coming soon' page for my site which, locally, (on a WAMP setup) is working flawlessly - in capable browsers (i.e. Chrome and Safari), the page looks fine and has a nice little CSS3 transition effect upon hover. And in other browsers, the page visibly looks (practically) identical and the hover effect still works, just without the transition. After uploading to my hosting, the site still looks fine and works fine in Chrome and Safari, but for some reason in Firefox, the @font-face declarations don't seem to have worked and in IE the layout is slightly different. I'm massively puzzled! The files are identical on my hosting to what I have locally.   • Switching from one connectionstring to another when moving from development to cloud

    Hello, I am working on a cloud application. When I test out the application on my computer I want to have my connection string set as follows in ServiceConfiguration.cscfg: <Setting name="DataConnectionString" value="UseDevelopmentStorage=true" /> When I publish to the cloud I need to have it set as follows: <Setting name="DataConnectionString" value="DefaultEndpointsProtocol=https;AccountName=xxxx;AccountKey=yyy" /> I keep going from one environment to the other and keep having to change the DataConnectionString. Is there a way that I can automate this? I looked around and can't see any examples but I'm sure some others have the same problem as me. Thanks, Nancy

  • What file or directory is unique to Plesk and unlikely to change in the future?

    I am writing a program that needs to be able to detect the presence of various web hosting control panels. I don't use Plesk, or have access to a server running Plesk, so I am unable to ascertain what file or directory I could test for to reliably conclude that the system is running Plesk. What file or directory indicates "Yes, this has Plesk installed" that is unlikely to ever change in the future, but would be present on all versions of Plesk out in the wild? Thanks in advance :)

    I have a read-only data file (for IP geolocation) that my web role needs to read. It is currently in the App_Data folder, which is NOT included in the deployment package for the cloud service. Unlike "web deploy", there is no checkbox for an azure cloud service deployment to include/exclude App_Data. Is there a reasonable way to get the deployment package to include the App_Data folder/files? Or is using Azure storage for this sort of thing the better way to go? (cost and performance wise) Am using Visual Studio 2013 and the Azure SDK 2.2

  • problem with application after moving from local to hosting server

    I have an application developed with CodeIgniter that works perfectly on my local server. After uploading it to the hosting server I've run into few issues that I can't figure out. I removed the index.php from URL by changing $config['index_page'] = "" in config.php file and adding rewriterule in .htaccess file. Everything worked fine on a local server. On hosting server the webstie wouldn't load until I reverted those changes to defaults. Now the strangest thing. I test the website and all pages load fine except of one. When I point to that page the browser responds with "Connection closed by remote server" (That's from Opera, other browser gave similar response). After closing the browser when I try to load the website again, now it won't even load any page showing me CodeIgniter's styled error "404 Page Not Found" What he heck?
