• Website Live Chat Script - Interface With Windows Live Messenger?

  Hello again fellow StackOverflow users! What I am looking for currently is your opinions on the what the best live chat script would be for my website. I'd be using this on both my local computer repair (which I've not really set up yet) company's site, as well as my other technical support site that is geared more towards showing people how to fix whatever problem they have themselves. It'll be a little bit before I launch it on either site, as I need to find a good design for my local computer repair company's site, as well as redesign TweaksForGeeks.com's layout so that it's more magazine like. (If you have any suggestions on good Wordpress templates for these, that'd also be swell. :) ) Features I'd like for the live chat script to have: (if possible) Real-time posting of messages (or as close to real time as possible) Integration into my Windows Live Messenger account - By this I mean it'd be handy if instead of me having to man a separate open browser window and constantly check it for new messages, it'd be much more convenient if it would instead just allow me to receive and respond to messages via my Windows Live account the same way I'd chat with any other person on my contact list. Sound notification of new messages when the chat isn't the focused window - In the event that using Windows Messenger isn't possible then I'd need it to notify me upon receipt of a new message. Recording of chat transcripts - This is a MUST HAVE Easy customization - I'll likely want to modify how it looks and whatnot, in addition to the fact that I'm going to set it up so that the chat transcripts can be posted to my site easily in order to be useful to my other visitors later on. With all that in mind, what is available out there? I've not really researched this at all yet; aside from doing a cursory search just before I decided to ask my StackOverflow brothers. I suppose I've made something wrong. Probably some logic mistake regarding vectorizing. Well, in fact I'm not surprised - this method creates really big matrices and probably the computations are proportionally longer. I have also tried to write it using nlfilter (similar to the second solution given by Jonas) but it seems to be hard since I use Matlab 6.5 (R13) (there are no sophisticated function handles available). So once again, I'm asking not for ready solution, but for some ideas that would help me to solve this in reasonable time. Maybe you will point me what I did wrong.

• What would be different in Java if Enum declaration didn't have the recursive part

Here I would like to learn what exactly would be broken (not typesafe anymore, or requiring additional casts etc) if Enum class was defined as public class Enum<E extends Enum> I'm using this code for testing my ideas: interface MyComparable<T> { int myCompare(T o); } class MyEnum<E extends MyEnum> implements MyComparable<E> { public int myCompare(E o) { return -1; } } class FirstEnum extends MyEnum<FirstEnum> {} class SecondEnum extends MyEnum<SecondEnum> {} With it I wasn't able to find any benefits in this exact case. PS. the fact that I'm not allowed to do class ThirdEnum extends MyEnum<SecondEnum> {} when MyEnum is defined with recursion is a) not relevant, because with real enums you are not allowed to do that just because you can't extend enum yourself b) not true - pls try it in a compiler and see that it in fact is able to compile w/o any errors PPS. I'm more and more inclined to believe that the correct answer here would be "nothing would change if you remove the recursive part" - but I just can't believe that.

• Why NOT use POST method here?

  I have a classifieds website. In the main page (index) I have several form fields which the user may or may not fill in, in order to specify a detailed search of classifieds. Ex: Category: Cars Price from: 3000 Price to: 10000 Color: Red Area: California The forms' action is set to a php page: <form action='query_sql.php' method='post'> In query_sql.php I fetch the variables like this: category=$_POST['category']; etc etc... Then query MySql: $query="SELECT........WHERE category='$category' etc etc.... $results = mysql_query($query); Then I simply display the results of the query to the user by creating a table which is filled in dynamically depending on the results set. However, according to an answer by Col. Shrapnel in my previous Q I shouldn't use POST here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3004754/how-to-hide-url-from-users-when-submitting-this-form The reason I use post is simply to hide the "one-page-word-document" long URL in the browsers adress bar. I am very confused, is it okay to use POST or not? It is working fine both when I use GET or POST now... And it is already on a production server... Btw, in the linked question, I wasn't referring to make URL invisible (or hide it) I just wanted it too look better (which I have accomplished with mod_rewrite). • Installing Mercurial on Windows Apache XAMPP Tutorial

  After asking this question (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2675764/xampp-mercurial-installation-on-windows-apache-hgwebdir-cgi-script-error) and reading though the whole internet including this question (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/644322/how-do-i-get-mercurials-hgwebdir-working-on-windows) and all its links for about 10 hours, I seem to not be able to find a solution. I begun with this tutorial http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/HgWebDirStepByStep ... and I really don't want to install ancient versions of Mercurial. I got my windows-apache to run Python scripts, CGI-Scripts, publish them in the wild, but hgwebdir just won't work. Question 1: Can someone please enrich his personal blog with a tutorial on how to install MERCURIAL on a WINDOWS XAMPP installation and make it visible to the world? I guarantee a lot of pageviews, as this is not a trivial problem. And this would sincerely help a lot of other people I guess. Question 2: For example, even after browsing half a day through everywhere, I just cannot find out, which version of python I need to pair with the freshest version of mercurial, and I get the "magic number is wrong"-error. This would be my question, if noone has time to make up a nice blogpost. Sorry for being a bit frustrated.

• Adding a variable href attribute to a hyperlink using XSLT

  I need to create links using dynamic values for both the URL and the anchor text. I have column called URL, which contains URL's, i.e., http://stackoverflow.com, and I have a column called Title, which contains the text for the anchor, i.e., This Great Site. I figure maybe all I need to do is nest this tags, along with a little HTML to get my desired result: <a href="> <xsl:value-of select="@URL">"> <xsl:value-of select="@Title"/> </xsl:value-of> </a> In my head, this would render: <a href=" http://stackoverflow.com"> This Great Site </a> I know there's more to it, but I haven't been able to clearly understand what more I need. I think this issue has been addressed before, but not in a way I could understand it. I'd be more than happy to improve the question's title to help noobs like myself find this item, and hopefully an answer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Using fonts that aren't on iPhone

  I'd like to use some fonts that aren't part of the iPhone OS. I've seen games that use non standard fonts. I can install the fonts, create images for each one in Photoshop and then use those images in the iPhone app. However, I don't think that is a practical way to go. If the color or tint needs to be adjusted (because of background) or size, I'll have to redesign every font I'm using. Is there a better way to do this? I read this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/360751/can-i-embed-a-custom-font-in-an-iphone-application and downloaded the open source font label app. However, it crashes most of the time when I try using particular fonts. In regards to the last comment about using UIFont with the fontWithName:size, that certainly doesn't work. Your font variable will be nil. Listing all available fonts reveals why - none of the custom fonts are in the list. I've also read http://stackoverflow.com/questions/566054/how-do-i-include-a-font-with-my-iphone-application, which definitely does not work. Same as last comment in above link.

• Three most critical programming concepts

  I know this has probably been asked in one form or fashion but I wanted to pose it once again within the context of my situation (and probably others here @ SO). I made a career change to Software Engineering some time ago without having an undergrad or grad degree in CS. I've supplemented my undergrad and grad studies in business with programming courses (VB, Java,C, C#) but never performed academic coursework in the other related disciplines (algorithms, design patterns, discrete math, etc.)...just mostly self-study. I know there are several of you who have either performed interviews and/or made hiring decisions. Given recent trends in demand, what would you say are the three most essential Comp Sci concepts that a developer should have a solid grasp of outside of language syntax? For example, I've seen blog posts of the "Absolute minimum X that every programmer must know" variety...that's what I'm looking for. Again if it's truly a redundancy please feel free to close; my feelings won't be hurt. (Closest ones I could find were http://stackoverflow.com/questions/164048/basic-programming-algorithmic-concepts- which was geared towards a true beginner, and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/648595/essential-areas-of-knowledge-which I didn't feel was concrete enough). • How do I bind to a custom view in Cocoa using Xcode 4?

  I'm a beginner when it comes to writing Mac apps and working with Cocoa, so please forgive my ignorance. I'm looking to create a custom view, that exposes some properties, which I can then bind to an NSObjectController. Since it's a custom view, the Bindings Inspector obviously doesn't list any of the properties I've added to the view that I can then bind to using Interface Builder. After turning to the Stackoverflow/Google for help, I've stumbled across a couple of possible solutions, but neither seem to be quite right for my situation. The first suggested creating an IBPlugin, which would then mean my bindings would be available in the Bindings Inspector. I could then bind the view to the controller using IB. Apparently IBPlugins aren't supported in Xcode 4, so that one's out the window. I'm also assuming (maybe wrongly) that IBPlugins are no longer supported because there's a better way of doing such things these days? The second option was to bind the controller to the view programmatically. I'm a bit confused as to exactly how I would achieve this. Would it require subclassing NSObjectController so I can add the calls to bind to the view? Would I need to add anything to the view to support this? Some examples I've seen say you'd need to override the bind method, and others say you don't. Also, I've noticed that some example custom views call [self exposeBinding:@"bindingName"] in the initializer. From what I gather from various sources, this is something that's related to IBPlugins and isn't something I need to do if I'm not using them. Is that correct? I've found a post on Stackoverflow here which seems to discuss something very similar to my problem, but there wasn't any clear winner as to the best answer. The last comment by noa on 12th Sept seems interesting, although they mention you should be calling exposeBinding:. Is this comment along the right track? Is the call to exposeBinding really necessary? Apologies for any dumb questions. Any help greatly appreciated.

• R plotting multiple histograms on single plot to .pdf as a part of R batch script

  I am writing R scripts which play just a small role in a chain of commands I am executing from a terminal. Basically, I do much of my data manipulation in a Python script and then pipe the output to my R script for plotting. So, from the terminal I execute commands which look something like $python whatever.py | R CMD BATCH do_some_plotting.R. This workflow has been working well for me so far, though I have now reached a point where I want to overlay multiple histograms on the same plot, inspired by this answer to another user's question on Stackoverflow. Inside my R script, my plotting code looks like this: pdf("my_output.pdf") plot(hist(d$original,breaks="FD",prob=TRUE), col=rgb(0,0,1,1/4),xlim=c(0,4000),main="original - This plot is in beta") plot(hist(d$minus_thirty_minutes,breaks="FD",prob=TRUE), col=rgb(1,0,0,1/4),add=T,xlim=c(0,4000),main="minus_thirty_minutes - This plot is in beta") Notably, I am using add=T, which is presumably meant to specify that the second plot should be overlaid on top of the first. When my script has finished, the result I am getting is not two histograms overlaid on top of each other, but rather a 3-page PDF whose 3 individual plots contain the titles: i) Histogram of d$original ii) original - This plot is in beta iii) Histogram of d$minus_thirty_minutes So there's two points here I'm looking to clarify. Firstly, even if the plots weren't overlaid, I would expect just a 2-page PDF, not a 3-page PDF. Can someone explain why I am getting a 3-page PDF? Secondly, is there a correction I can make here somewhere to get just the two histograms plotted, and both of them on the same plot (i.e. 1-page PDF)? The other Stackoverflow question/answer I linked to in the first paragraph did mention that alpha-blending isn't supported on all devices, and so I'm curious whether this has anything to do with it. Either way, it would be good to know if there is a R-based solution to my problem or whether I'm going to have to pipe my data into a different language/plotting engine.

If not, I apologise in advance. If you come from the Validation in the Model camp - does Model mean OOP representation of data (i.e. Active Record/Data Mapper) as "Entity" (to borrow the DDD terminology) - in which case you would, I assume, want all Model classes to inherit common validation constraints. Or can these rules simply be part of a Service in the Model - i.e. a Validation service? For example, could you consider Zend_Form and it's validation classes part of the Model? The concept of a Domain Model does not appear to be limited to Entities, and so validation may not necessarily need to be confined to this Entities. It seems that you would require a lot of potentially superfluous handing of values and responses back and forth between forms and "Entities" - and in some instances you may not persist the data recieved from user input, or recieve it from user input at all.

• Guidance required: FIrst time gonna work with real high end database (size = 50GB).

  I got a project of designing a Database. This is going to be my first big scale project. Good thing about it is information is mostly organized & currently stored in text files. The size of this information is 50GB. There are going to be few millions of records in each Table. Its going to have around 50 tables. I need to provide a web interface for searching & browsing. I'm going to use MySQL DBMS. I've never worked with a database more than 200MB before. So, speed & performance was never a concern but I followed things like normalization & Indexes. I never used any kind of testing/benchmarking/queryOptimization/whatever because I never had to care about them. But here the purpose of creating a database is to make it quickly searchable. So, I need to consider all possible aspects in design. • C++ struct, public data members and inheritance

  Is it ok to have public data members in a C++ class/struct in certain particular situations? How would that go along with inheritance? I have some configuration blocks that I read from a file (integers, bools, floats) and I need to place them into a structure for later use. I don't want to expose these externally just use them inside another class (I actually do want to pass these config parameters to another class but don't want to expose them through a public API). The fact is that I have many such config parameters (15 or so) and writing getters and setters seems an unnecessary overhead. Also I have more than one configuration block and these are sharing some of the parameters. Making a struct with all the data members public and then subclassing does not feel right. What's the best way to tackle that situation? Does making a big struct to cover all parameters provide an acceptable compromise (I would have to leave some of these set to their default values for blocks that do not use them)?

I think ASP.net used 3 Tier architecture while developing applications or Web applications. Where as frameworks like Zend, Symphony they use MVC. I just want to stick to a pattern that is best suitable for WebProject Development? May be this is a very silly confusion? But if someone could clear this confusion, that would be very greatful?

• Efficient (basic) regular expression implementation for streaming data

  I'm looking for an implementation of regular expression matching that operates on a stream of data -- i.e., it has an API that allows a user to pass in one character at a time and report when a match is found on the stream of characters seen so far. Only very basic (classic) regular expressions are needed, so a DFA/NFA based implementation seems like it would be well-suited to the problem. Based on the fact that it's possible to do regular expression matching using a DFA/NFA in a single linear sweep, it seems like a streaming implementation should be possible. Requirements: The library should try to wait until the full string has been read before performing the match. The data I have really is streaming; there is no way to know how much data will arrive, it's not possible to seek forward or backward. Implementing specific stream matching for a couple special cases is not an option, as I don't know in advance what patterns a user might want to look for. For the curious, my use case is the following: I have a system which intercepts memory writes inside a full system emulator, and I would like to have a way to identify memory writes that match a regular expression (e.g., one could use this to find the point in the system where a URL is written to memory). If nothing's available, then I can start down the unhappy path of reinventing this wheel to fit my own needs, but I'd really rather not if I can avoid it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• IIS6 throws error for jquery.

  Hi, on my master page, I have referenced jquery file. I am doing simple hover function. When mouse hover, I change the css and when hover out, change the css back to originial. Nothing fancy. but my page throws jquery error when I run in IIS6 on server 2003. When I run on IIS5.1 on local xp machine, it works perfectly fine. Any idea? I access both pages from my machine so IE settings is not the problem. • Using Cucumber or RSpec+Selenium to create end user documentation?

  Has anyone tried creating end user (potentially online, potentially to be printed) help/documentation out of your cucumber scenarios? Or taken screenshots for use in documentation using RSpec and Selenium RC's ability to do so? For Cucumber, I'm imagining something like: Scenario: If you want to add a link Given I am on the edit blog post page When I press the "add link" button And I type in a link URL "http://stackoverflow.com" And I click "OK" Then the blog post should have 1 link Translating to the documentation: If you want to add a link, go to the edit blog post page. Press the "add link" button and type a URL, like "http://stackoverflow.com", into the link URL field. Click "OK". Would it be worth my time to try and, for one, write something to parse my Cucumber features into documentation, and two, to write/structure my Cucumber features in such a way as to create good documentation? Would the resulting documentation end up sounding really boring without much variation in the structure? Is there anything else out there like this idea? Doxygen looks like it's more for code documentation than end-user documentation. What about automatically taking screenshots? This seems like a more fruitful path-- just reuse the code that takes a screenshot when an RSpec test fails and have it take one in prescribed situations. Is there a better way to do this?

• Setting Icon for wpf application (VS 08)

AFAIK, I need potentially 3 images? 1 image is the actual image in explorer when clicking on the .exe (thumbnail for the exe) 1 image (tiny) in the top left corner (16 x 16? Not entirely sure) 1 image in the start menu dock, to the left of the app (maybe 32x32? again not sure) So thats fine. Now I have selected an Icon. How do I use it in one of above situations? I have tried adding it in resources, nothing seems to happen. Following that first SO solution, "First go to Resource View (from menu: View -- Other Window -- Resource View). Then in Resource View navigate through resources, if any. If there is already a resource of Icon type, added by Visual Studio, then open and edit it. Otherwise right-click and select Add Resource, and then add a new icon." The resource view is empty, and I cannot right click in this view. If I right click on the solution properties resources I can add the icon image, but it doesn't show in either of the locations listed above. (or anywhere that I can see) What am I doing wrong?

• Laravel4: Checking many-to-many relationship attribute even when it does not exist

  This is my first time with Laravel and also Stackoverflow... I am developing a simple course management system. The main objects are User and Course, with a many-to-many relationship between them. The pivot table has an additional attribute, participant_role, which defines whether the user is a student or an instructor within that particular course. class Course extends Eloquent { public function users() { return $this->belongsToMany('User')->withPivot('participant_role')->withTimestamps(); } } However, there is an additional role, system admin, which can be defined on the User object. And this brings me mucho headache. In my blade view I have the following: @if ($course->pivot->participant_role == 'instructor') { // do something here... } This works fine when the user has been assigned to that particular $course and there is an entry for this user-course combination in the pivot table. However, the problem is the system administrator, who also should be able to access course details. The if-clause above gives Trying to get property of non-object error, apparently because there is no entry in the pivot table for system administrator (as the role is defined within the User object). I could probably solve the problem by using some off-the-shelf bundle for handling role-based permissions. Or I could (but don't want to) do something like this with two internal if-clauses: if (!empty($course->pivot)) { if ($course->pivot->participant_role == 'instructor') { // do something... } } Other options (suggested in partially similar entries in Stackoverflow) would include 1) reading all the pivot table entries to an array, and use in_array to check if a role exists, or even 2) SQL left join to do this on database level. However, ultimately I am looking for a compact one-line solution? Can I do anything similar to this, which unfortunately does not seem to work? if (! empty ($course->pivot->participant_role == 'instructor') ) { // do something... } The shorter the answer, the better :-). Here are my question Is it true that in FAT filesystems the maximum number of files per filesystem equals the number of entries in the FAT table. And is it also true that in indexed filesystems the maximum number of files per filesystem equals the number of indexblocks – 1. I'm reading some stuff and am trying to get a good understanding of it.

This is easily accomplished in PowerShell v2 with the Load-Module function. I need to run this particular script on a machine where I, for various reasons, do not want to install PowerShell v2, but have v1. Is there a Load-Module equivalent in PowerShell v1?

  Hello! I had a problem with image uploading to Django with FreeBSD, so I asked on SO: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1959447/django-uploading-image-error and got an answer. Our admin can't install these libraries, he don't know how. Neither do I. It's FreeBSD, kinda unfamiliar system. So, how do we install PIL with JPEG support and whatever needed for image uploading?
