• why is usb disk corrupted by Vista restore

  I have a laptop with Vista Business on an 80GB disk. I have created a full backup and stored that on the original 80GB drive. On my new 320GB disk, I have created a partition with exactly the same number of bytes as the original 80GB disk. I swap the disks so that the 320GB is internal, and the 80GB is in a USB caddy. I boot from the NEO restore CD and everything looks fine: I select the dump on the USB drive, target is drive C:, start the restore. After a few seconds, the restore fails with "not enough disks in machine or disk not large enough" error (I did note the exact phrase). I then swap the 80GB disk back to the internal drive, but the thing is unbootable. Why has the restore process scrubbed the boot status of the USB drive ?

• What would cause an .exe to vanish without a trace?

  I have a few computers. One computer, at home, one day suddenly had its pgbouncer.exe vanish. The antivirus didn't have it in its virus chest [avast]. I couldn't find the bgbouncer anywhere. All the other pgbouncer files remained where they used to be, except the exe had vanished. I hadn't uninstalled it, nor had anyone else used the machine. I hadn't installed any new software since the previous time I had used it either. Just now, however, my TV computer was running out of disk space, which was weird because I had python setup to do transcoding and archiving. I logged in and voila! python.exe had vanished !! Once again, Avast.exe didn't have it in its virus chest, and dunno! I do this time, with the TV computer, know exactly the date that python vanished. Sat the 18th my python scripts ran fine. Sat the 19th python was gone. I'm going to do some hunting in the event log to see what happened that day. But if anyone has experienced vanishings before and has a clue what happened, I would like to know. FYI: Both computers (bgbouncer vanish and python vanish) were running Win7 with the RDP hack and both on SSDs and both with Avast. Both computers had all windows updates set to manual(to prevent random stuff changing!) and neither had recently had any windows updates manually applied. FYI2: Tv computer had since the beginning of October dropbox running all the time trying to download two files. Sadly, a temporary download of each of these two files by dropbox resulted in Avast freaking out and virus-chesting them, and then dropbox downloading them partially again, before being dropboxed. Now, these two files were binaries from a program I had personally written and were clean on other machines. Since the python vanishing I have deleted these two binaries from dropbox (using the website) and dropbox exe on the tv computer is now at peace. I don't think this should cause python.exe to vanish though :/ New edit: On the 18/10/2013, at 0742 my python script ended with an error: "file still in use" which was unexpected but I shrugged it off since sometimes media portal doesn't release the recording. But on second thoughts is weird since the show in use would have been finished recording the day before. On the 18/10/2013 at 0807 the windows event log complains that several drivers required for CutePDF, send to onenote 2010, send to onenote 2013, microsoft xps document writer aren't installed. I just checked now and indeed those printers have vanished! New update! I found my python.exe that had been removed. It was still in the C:\Python33\ directory except it had been renamed to a random string charater.tmp (ie, it was made into a temp file) with a creation date of 19/10/2013 at 0600:02 am. Now, the computer normally wakes at 6am to do transcoding. What could have moved my python file into a tmp file?

• The USB mouse sticks in Windows 7 after automatic attempt to fix the boot

  Avast Antivirus asked me to delete a probable virus and to restart to perform a checking. I had to stop the checking at the middle of the procedure as I needed the computer. It was imposible to turn off the computer pushing the power button (as it entered in suspension mode, no matter how long I kept pushed the power button). I removed the battery as the only way to restart the computer. Windows 7 said that there is a problem to iniziate Windows. Windows 7 tried to fix the problem without success. Windows 7 started after that though. Everything is OK but the USB mouse. The USB mouse sticks and freezes each couple of seconds more or less. The tactile mouse (PS2) works well. I googled for solutions but the posible solutions didn't work for me. What happened? How could I fix it without formatting and reinstalling everything? UPDATE: this is what I did: Change the mouse from one usb port to another Test another mouse Set the number of cores of the CPU manually with msconfig Power management: not disable usb ports Check hard disk errors

• One quarter of screen corrupted on MacBook Pro

  I have a problem with my MacBook Pro's screen - here's a video: http://yfrog.com/4wm63z For those who prefer words, if you divide the screen vertically into 4 columns, the second column is corrupted (flickering, and discoloured, usually with yellow). I took it to an Apple store and they said it could be the screen or the logic board, neither of which will be cheap to replace. However, occasionally this problem will completely go away. So before I part with my cash, or decide to turn this into an overpriced media center for my TV... could the problem be a loose cable, or something else cheaper to fix?

• Changing Word mail merge data source locations in bulk?

  I've just moved a number of Word mail merge files, and a number of Excel spreadsheets that are the data sources for the mail merges, from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 7 computer, and now all the paths for the merge sources are incorrect (used to be c:\documents and settings\user\my documents.... now c:\users\documents....). While I can correct the path of the data source in each file individually, I was hoping that there would be some way of updating the files in bulk, as there are a relatively large number of them. Word 2007 is what is being used, but the documents are all in the previous DOC format (not DOCX).

• How do I fix a corrupted copy of .Net Framework on Windows 7?

  I receive the following error when trying to run applications that require .net Framework 3.5: "Could not load file or assembly 'System.Core, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest." I've tried numerous fixes, such as reinstalling through ad/remove software, copying the .net folder over from a clean windows 7 install, and running the .net cleanup tool. Just wondering if anyone has run into this issue before, or has an idea on how to fix it.

  Increasingly I'm getting tables having to be repaired dwith the message returned of: Auto-increment value: 0 is smaller than max used value: xx This has happened on tables with 200 rows and tables with ~3 million rows, but so far the same few tables have had the problem. I'm running MySQL 5.0.22. The repairs are run by a script which checks every minute for the need to repair MySQL tables. I also have an automated backup of the 6 Gigabyte database running very two hours and the repairs always get trigged around the time of the backup. Any ideas?

• Blank list of windows services

  Recently when I open windows services (always as administrator) I get a blank list of services: When I try and click on one of the empty lines I get this "Script Error" message: This happens over and over again, after several times I restarted my computer. I can't pinpoint exactly when this started happening or if I made any specific changes to my computer at that time. Someone told my to try running scf /scannow as administrator, but when I try to do that the scan stops at 34% and I get the message: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit, and I would really like to avoid reinstalling windows. Does anyone know how to fix this? Edit - Here is another attempt I made and some more information that might help: Following WhoIsRich's suggestion, I tried the command sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows. This gave the error message "The arguments passed to sfc are invalid. The offline windows directory specified points to the online system", and then I realized this command is meant to be run after booting from another system. Since I don't have my windows installation disk right now, I used my own system to create a recovery disk, and then restarted my computer and used the recovery disk to boot. I then ran the above command, and I got the following message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log". I then restarted my computer and let it boot up normally. The problem with windows services persists, and the CBS.log file is a long log file with many entries, and I don't know if there is useful information in it, and if there is, how to find it.

• ubuntu mount iso but some files are unreadable

  I'm new to Linux and just installed ubuntu 12.04 amd64 this month. I had failed installing Texlive with texlive2012 iso image. I used the recommended command to mount: "mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop,noauto /your/texlive2012.iso /mnt " But the installer failed to read some file. The iso is fine, I checked the md5. I extracted everything from iso with archive manager, and it installed successfully. So, why mount is not working? Thanks. • USB Virus, "Program too big to fit in memory"?

  I got an installer for a piece of software via usb from a friend.Now what was weird was that although my friend and I had the same OS, same brand of laptop and I had a newer version (though I don't think this quite matters), the installer was running properly for him but not for me. It just showed a command line window and exited. I ran it via a batch file in which I included "pause" after running it. Here's the screenshot: Later my friend called me and told me that it was the USB that was the problem. It had some kind of virus on it and it corrupted every executable or folder on it , and it renamed all the sub_files inside folders to some weird jargon. He had tried using another USB and the installer worked fine. Now the friend has (unfortunately) gone back to his city and I can't get the installer again from him. My question is: Is there any way to repair the installer executable and run it? and Do you think the virus has infected my PC? (I have run a system scan with my antivirus and it showed nothing but still I'm worried)

• .AVI Files randomly cease to open, other strange errors too

  I Recently (a couple weeks ago) downloaded the complete series of Seinfeld, all in varying file type. I Watched them in sequence according to season and to airing date, and all was well. All of the files played fine with my media player of choice ("BS Player"), and once I had finished, I went onto watch some other TV I had previously downloaded (The U.S. Series of "The Office"), and after then, some other film and then some music, over the following weeks (keep in mind all of these files are all on the same Hard Drive). Later then, More recently, I Went back to watching Seinfeld. The episodes played well as they did before- with the exclusion of a few in Season 7. I Have not tested all of the episodes in the season, but upon inspection, the majority of them are experiencing this problem; the problem being simply that they don't open! BS Player says that the files are either damaged or that the codecs to play the files are not on my computer-- however I am certain that the files DO have the codecs, and I am pretty sure that they are NOT DAMAGED either. I Have played the files with other players (such as VLC, Media Player Classic, and Windows Media Player), too, only to the same result; of them not opening. Seemingly the only way that I can differentiate between a damaged file and a non-damaged file are the way that the icon shows in Windows Explorer. For example, the below image is how explorer shows the information of a file that is non-damaged... ...and below is how a damaged file appears... The most disturbing and confusing part of this, though, is the last episode in the season- It opens, but not as a video- Instead, as a 1 Hour, 16 Minute, and 35 Second Audio file! The file plays a song for the first 4 or so minutes, and then is pretty much silent (except for some extremely quiet noise) until the last minute or so, when a random array of chopped up sounds and beeping noises play. I Do not recognise the song at the beginning of the file, but by the sounds of it, it is a song by the artist "Mr. Oizo," who's complete works I downloaded a couple weeks before now; and a bit before then I had finished downloading season 9 (not affected by these problems) of Seinfeld. I'd also like to note that the file I told of earlier (which played audio instead of video) reads as the same size as the other files in the season (around 175 MB) and also opens as a video clip. I Have NEVER experienced any of these problems in the past, and they seem to be only effecting the one season of my downloaded TV. The problems have not arisen with any of the other files on my Hard Drive, or any of the files downloaded around the time or after the time of which I downloaded season 7 of Seinfeld- or at least to my noticing. I Use the hard drive these files are located on almost every day, so could that be the cause of these problems? Is this a sign that my HDD is soon going to die? If it helps, the HDD is a Western Digital MyBook 1.5 TB 7500 RPM. It is connected to the computer via U.S.B. 2.0. EDIT! I noticed that this problem is now occurring with Season 9 of Seinfeld- and, presumably, other files on the drive I have yet to check. Please, If you have ANY IDEA AT ALL on what may be causing this or how to fix it, do tell me!

• How to recover from broken file?

  Hello I have a broken file. It was encrypted(by me) and I did get it unencrypted though I can not remember if it is tar or tar.gz. I believe whichever one it is though is corrupted. I've tried both methods and everything else I could think of for what kind of archive format it could be(7z, zip, etc) and it errors out. What is a possible course of action to take here? The files on it are not extremely important though they are irreplaceable. Are there any tools out there for "fixing" tar or tar.gz formats?

• Sfsync04 file is corrupted

  I don't know exactly what I did, but somehow the sfsync04.sys (drivers) file is corrupt, and now I can't start my windows. That's the error startup repair gives me, and it is unable to correct it automatically. I'm currently running a live version of Ubuntu, so I can access my files, and everything seems to be alright except for the sfsync04.sys file. Is there a way I can repair that file so I can avoid reinstalling Windows for now? I'm running windows 7 64 bits. The file is in windows\system32\drivers\ . I think this happened when I tried to install some legacy software, but I'm not sure.

• Corrupted attachments in Thunderbird forward filter

  I created a filter in Thunderbird 14 on client A that, when a certain rule on incoming mail is satisfied, the same mail is forwarded to client B and C. Matching mails received from A are always forwarded to B and C, and that's what I want. Though, when the mail on A has an attachment, it is also forwarded by B and C but the file they receive is corrupted. In my case the incoming file on A is a Word file of about 10kb in size; clients B and C receive a Word file of 27 bytes. I think this could happen because the forward starts from A when the attachment is not yet completely downloaded. I'm not sure this is the cause, though. And I wouldn't have any idea for a fix. Any idea about how to investigate or solve the issue?

• Dual HDD dual boot Win7/Win7 hibernate corrupts partitions?

  I have two SSDs in my laptop. Both have 2 partitions each one with Windows 7 64bit and another one with OEM stuff on it (SYSTEM_DRV). I use the BIOS boot menu to boot between the drives. I have removed the drive letters so that no partitions of drive 1 are mapped in windows 2 on drive 2 and wise-versa. What I have observered however is that when I hibernate windows 1, boot windows 2 do some work and shutdown then resume windows 1 - the windows 2 partition will get corrupt quite often. Just happened actually - it is shown as "RAW" in the Disk manager instead of NTFS and windows will blue screen at boot. Alternatively I've seen cases where chkdsk will run and will wipe out all security descriptors making the partition completly unbootable. Why am I seeing these corruptions and what can I do to prevent them?

• Windows XP - Repairing Corrupt System32\Config\System File

  My apologies for this long post. I would like to describe the mess I'm in then ask some questions about how to fix it: Starting up my Windows XP SP1 machine I got the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Tried restarting several times with same results then Googled the problem. Tried the fix described here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair%5Fwindows%5Fxp (since my CPU does not have XD buffer overflow protection I did not set /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as OS Load Option). This did not work. I then found another fix for the problem on hardwareanalysis.com: Basically, boot to dos prompt (or recovery console if available) and make backups of the following files:- c:\windows\system32\config\system (to c:\windows\tmp\system.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\software (to c:\windows\tmp\software.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\sam (to c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\security (to c:\windows\tmp\security.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\default (to c:\windows\tmp\default.bak) then delete the above files (not the backups!) then copy the above files in c:\windows\repair to the c:\windows\system32\config directory restart your computer This did work (and I wish I'd done it first, since it was completely reversible, unlike the first method). However, afterwards I found that all the user accounts on the PC were gone. I resurrected them by copying the backed up security file back into the system32\config folder (I may have copied the SAM file from backup as well, I cannot remember clearly now). Now the PC boots up and I can log in. However things are still not right. I tried to alter one of the user accounts and found I could not access the User Accounts in the Control Panel. Microsoft KB 919292 had a fix for the problem. However, the fix failed with a Windows Installer error: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. Windows Installer 3.1 was already installed. I reinstalled it but continued to get the Windows Installer error whenever I tried to run the fix in KB 919292. I have since noticed another three problems: 1) Several applications on the PC no longer run, eg Microsoft Word. Shortcuts no longer seem to do anything and if I run the executables directly (eg for Word by running C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Winword.exe) I get a message similar to: "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application." even though the executable is clearly visible in Windows Explorer (and even though Word actually opens - the error dialog appears after Word has opened. Clicking OK to the error dialog closes Word). 2) One or the other of the two fixes I tried for the original problem caused new user profiles to be created. eg My old user profile under the Documents and Settings folder was Simon. The old one still exists but there is now a new one called Simon.DBQ2515. Obviously the new one is being used because Opera (my browser that still works) no longer sees the bookmarks file under my old profile. 3) Probably as a result of fooling around with the Security file, when I try to boot off the Windows XP CD and run the Recovery Console I am now asked for the administrator password. The only problem is there is no administrator account on the PC. There is one account, LocalAdmin, that has administrative rights but when I entered the password for that account it did not work. It is so long since I originally set up the PC that I cannot remember if the original administrator account ever had a password and, if so, what it was. So, my question is: How can I fix this mess? In particular: 1) Having tried the two fixes linked to above, have I irrepairably damaged the Windows instance, requiring a clean reinstallation of Windows + all applications, or should it be possible to get the machine working correctly again without such drastic measures? 2) Is there any way to get around the administrator password so I can use the Recovery Console again, given that there is no account called "administrator" and the password for the one account with admin privileges does not work (and that, before I started the second fix, I was not asked for an administrator password)? 3) Is there any easy way to fix the problem with the applications that think they are not installed? 4) Is there any easy way to fix the problem of the Windows Installer that does not work, even if reinstalled? We have managed to narrow it down to the point where we can replicate the behaviour using just Management Studio and SQL Server. We are not actually executing the script, just parsing it. Most of the time, the parse operation works fine. Occasionally (seemingly randomly), the parse operation fails with a syntax error. The error message shows the part of the script with the error, which appears as some SQL from the original script that has been truncated and has random characters appended to it. An example: The original SQL: SELECT DISTINCT ST.TABLE_NAME as TableName FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES AS ST INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS AS SC ON SC.TABLE_NAME = ST.TABLE_NAME WHERE ST.TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE' AND SC.COLUMN_NAME = 'Identity' AND ST.TABLE_NAME != 'dtproperties' ORDER BY ST.TABLE_NAME The SQL that is in error (as reported by SQL Server): SELECT DISTINCT ST.TABLE_NAME as TableName FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES AS ST INNER JOIN INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS AS SC ON SC.TABLE_NAME = Sa? The above example shows how the query is being corrupted. It doesn't always happen, and is not always the same bit of SQL that causes the error. Parsing this script against another SQL Server instance produces no errors, showing that the script is fine. It appears that something is corrupting the SQL that is being received the the server. This leads me to think that the problem lies either with the client end or in the transmission of the SQL from the client to the server. I have a SQL trace from the period where an error occurs, which shows the SQL has been corrupted when SQL Server receives it. We have been unable to track down any possible cause of this behaviour, and so cannot find a fix. Because the errors occur seemingly randomly, it is also very hard to generate reproduction steps to submit a bug report. Any ideas?

• Corrupt Windows 7, Chkdsk finds errors continuously after multiple tries

  My Windows 7 instance is all corrupt on my Dell XPS laptop (my kid hibernated it as it was starting). I got the Windows 7 installation disc and I try to repair the installation. The repair goes through and it says done but it doesn't know if it repaired successfully. It just says reboot. I can also open a command line and I run chkdsk /F manually in there. What's strange is that I've run it 20 times and chkdsk claims that it fixes stuff every time. Eventually it stops and I reboot. Much to my chagrin, my machine is still broken. Chkdsk gives an error at the end that it can't write a log file. I've also run a full diagnostic using the Dell diagnostic tools. The tools say that everything is okay. Any suggestions regarding what I should do next? Any help appreciated. mj

• Using Ubuntu switch a failing windows 7 harddrive?

  My laptop harddrive has developed some serious read errors in the windows partition. Windows 7 still boots but every single action takes an aeon, and it is definitely due to a harddisk error not due to any spyware. I'm using the Ubuntu partition now. I've ordered a new harddrive but my laptop didn't come with a Windows 7 install disk (I think I was meant to make one with the windows 7 tools). So how can I install Windows 7 on my new harddrive?

• Windows7 corrupted profile - prevention exists?

  I have dedicated Windows7 (not on domain) virtual machine for overnight automation testing. Some commands (mySQLdump, tscon.exe) must be run under administrator account. Last week administrator account's profile was corrupted. I fixed it by renaming it in the registry and logging in as administrator. And today it is corrupted again. I use administrator account only to run above commands via runas. Also the computer is restarted via cmd - shutdown command - quite often. Especially every night before automation testing starts. I checked the comp for viruses - did full scan using avast although I believed that the comp is clean. Any idea how to prevent the profile to get corrupted again? update So the first log entry in event log is today from 1.15am and one of my scripts ran runas command as administrator exactly at 1.15am. It was second time that runas war executed though after the testing started. The same happened second day in a row. Before the testing starts I need to copy one file that is locked. So I run handle.exe from runas to unlock it. That is what I think causing the profile to get corrupted. I am not able to reproduce it by myself. The message from event viewer is Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. DETAIL – The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

• Corrupt mysql system tables

  I am having issues with the columns_priv table in the mysql system database. I cannot add new users currently. I have tried repairing it using mysqlcheck --auto-repair --all-databases --password but I get the following output: mysql.columns_priv Error : Incorrect file format 'columns_priv' error : Corrupt Is there any other way to repair this table, or how do I go about replacing it with a blank table? What would I lose by doing that? Thank you Edit (Additional Info) mysqld is currently using 100% cpu constantly. • md5sum of large files gives different results sometimes

  I have an AMD quad core, 8 gb RAM, 1 SSD EXT2 (2 months old), 2 HDD EXT4, approximately 1 year old. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 x86-64 and when I compute the md5sum of large files (9 GB) sometimes I get different values than the one stored on a reference file. Upon restarting and switching off the PC then I get the expected results no matter how many times I repeat it. But this is random. I've turn on ECC (the fastest possible settings) and the issue seems to be rarer, but I've run memtest86+ for 6+ hours without a glitch (and with ECC off!). Any idea? Should I update the BIOS of my motherboard (Asus EVO-something...don't remember it now)? I've tried all the rest apart this, but genuinely don't know what to do anymore... Any suggestion is appreciated!

• Corrupted file, hard drive test?

  Hi guys, I'm currently on a macbook with a 1TB external hard drive connected trough a USB hub wich is connected on my macbook. The problem is, my disk, wich is partitioned in 2 (one HFS+ and one NTFS) keeps getting corrupted, recently it was my HFS+ partition, I could not repair it using the Apple's Disk utility, but was able to backup my files. Is it synonym that my hard drive is failing? Is it because of my USB hub? I also keep all my iTunes library on my external HD (HFS+ partition), and did a lot of transfer lately, adding files, removing etc. the last time, my partition got corrupted after a lot of deleted items. If anybody has an idea of what to check first, what could cause the problem, I would appreciate it :) Thanks!

• How do I tell if my solid state hard disk is bad?

  I have a Windows 7 Ultimate computer (Shuttle) that I built myself and in it I put a Solid State Drive (SSD). It's been working well for a number of months but now when I start it there are problems. I have 2 users setup on the computer and when I try and sign in with either user it claims that the password is incorrect. I could understand the odd typo but I've had my wife try it as well and we've got the passwords correct. On top of that it will remain at the login screen for 1 minute and 20 seconds and then spontaneously reboot without shutting down. So I'm trying to work out if this is a hard disk problem or something else. Any ideas? (I have a nightly backup to a WHS so it will be easy to recover but I don't want to do that unless I have to and don't want to waste time putting in a new HD just to discover it's something else.)
