  I'd like to know what's with all those unnamed drives. I've always thought they are what they say they are (recoveries and what not), why are there so many of them? and why do they all say 100% Free (i.e. they're all empty!). If that's the case, what happened to my recovery? Info: I'm on Dell Inspiron 7520 Windows 8 Single Language (Had Kali installed on SSD a couple of days ago, now I've just deleted that and will install Kali on VM on SSD, that's drive (S:). • What can cause a black or blank screen when pressing logout or switch user in windows 7

  The situation I have here is related to a brand new dell machine with a GTX260 video card. Put simply after one user logs in when that user either 'switch users' or 'logs out' windows goes to a black/blank screen. The TV screen that is used with this computer previously functioned fine with fast user switching on an XP machine. The new computer is windows 7. The TV is not outputting any error messages like 'no signal' or anything else that would be displayed if the computer was off. You can fix the problem by cycling the input on television, after cycling the input the welcome screen appears as normal. What I want to know is what on earth is windows doing that would cause the video card to stop sending the same signal to the monitor when the user logs off or switches users. I mean as far as I can tell the resolution is identical between windows and the welcome screen. Or perhaps if somebody has experienced this before a fix would be great too.

• 2 GB of memory in 1 GB system is a problem?

  Hi folks, I just installed 2 1 Gig sticks into my friend's machine, thinking that it would take all the 2 GBs. Unfortunately, according to Dell's website, it says the maximum amount of memory accessible to the machine is arbitrarily set to 1 GB! The system indeed reports having 1 GB of memory accessible to it, but I'm worried that having 2 GB in there might break something. Are my fears reasonable? Should I buy two 512 MB sticks instead? • How to make RHEL have persistent local hdd name?

  I have 2 identical Dell R720 servers running identical Oracle Enterprise Linux(RHEL)6.4. Both servers (supposedly) configured in exactly the same way. However, one of the servers is behaving differently. Every other reboot its local HDD name(and related partitions) flip from /dev/sda to /dev/sdj. This is problematic because both servers are configured for multipathd, and if this flip happens their config does not match and Oracle DB(or its clusterware) complains that nodes are not configured identically. Why does one server has a consistent device names while the other server keeps flipping back and forth? How can I make local hdd to consistently be /dev/sda? I suspect this might have something to do with udev but I'm not sure.

  I bought (and just received) a new 1u dell poweredge 860 (got it on ebay for $35). I finished installing Ubuntu Server (Ubuntu Server 12.04.3 LTS), install apache/mariadb/memcache/php5 works great but I am scared about security. so far I am the only one using the server but eventually more people (friends, friends of friends) will use this server, use ssh etc... I want to know what can I do to secure all the information and not get hacked, both from the web or ssh or ddos and any other attack possible. Some entries marked as critical like : Starting needs : 184707ms, sometimes 211855ms or 269767ms Some Errors like: This process does many diskactivities and lower the performance of Windows: Filename : ntoskrnl.exe Why are the startups marked as critical? Are the values normal on a Dell Precision M90 (Intel Centrono Dual CPU, 2GB RAM, 80 GB Disk)? Some entries marked as Errors showing the time for shutdown, but there are some like this one i printed in this question, what is the meaning of this?

• Problems with connecting to wireless network on windows 7

  I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 (Home premium) 64 bit edition installed on it. I use a Wi-Fi router to browse the net. My problem is, I lose the network connection every 10 minutes or so. The network icon on the system tray shows the refresh icon and the status as "identifying network". The network is fine and works fine with my phone. I saw on the net this may be caused if I have enabled IPv6, so I disabled it but still problem persists. When I look at the event log I see the following entries: "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0xXXXXXXXX. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server." I have also installed VirtualBox(32 bit edition) on the laptop. Does anybody any solution to this?

  I have one chance to install this in my server on site. Server that i am running is CentOS 5.6 (Dell R310, RAID1) where i need to install alsa-sound driver so that anything related to audio recording from rtsp is working (rail station/rail passing video recording including audio, where audio is not working). Unfortunately i do not have any kind of internet in that odd none human location so yum will not work for me. I need a offline way to install alsa drivers including missing dependencies if arise. • Cannot open some websites

  Hi all, I have a very specific problem. We have a wifi router at home which supports three laptops and a desktop. For the past month or so, I've been unable to open a number of websites on our HP desktop, Dell laptop and my Macbook. These include everything connected with http://wordpress.org and several others. The page simply refuses to load. I can't access some other websites as well. I've tried everything. We've rebooted the router, deleted all the cookies/download history, but nothing works. I've tried accessing these websites on IE, Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Strangely, when friends use their laptops on the same wifi connection, the websites open just fine. What do I do?   In what platforms/browsers does Adobe Flash come preinstalled? I'm pretty sure neither FireFox nor Safari include it on any platform but Chrome on Windows does (not sure about Mac or Linux). What about IE on a completely vanilla Win XP system? Or Win 7? Maybe mfgs like Dell add it if MS doesn't? Perhaps we can find (or build) a comprehensive list. Considering that Flash is a significant piece of the web platform, I hope I've asked this on the right place.

• I need to make Windows 7 STOP disabling the wifi adapter when the wired LAN is connected

  This is a Dell Latitude E6430. There is a setting in the bios to control this behavior and I have DISABLED it but it still happens. I am also running the latest bios. When I plug in a network cable the wifi adapter becomes disabled. I need it to stay enabled. What else could be making this happen? EDIT: The reason I need to do this is because with NETSH WLAN commands you can create a wifi hotspot by sharing the internet connection on the wired adapter and broadcasting a ssid on the virtual wifi nic. I do this all the time but it's not working on this laptop. I'm wondering if it's a network security thing where I am. I'm going to try from my hotel tonight and report back.

• What are my options for a disk with what seems to be a corrupted filesystem?

  I have a friend with an old Dell that will not boot into Windows. It has an IDE drive. It spins up. I have an IDE to USB device. I've attached the drive via that device to a working laptop. The drive does not mount. If I go into Disk Management I can see the drive but it will not initalize, says "Drive not ready." I've also booted into a linux live cd to see if the drive mounts, it does not. I am just trying to recover some pictures from the drive. The data is not important enough to send to a professional. The issue is more of a curosity on how to recover data if and when these situations would occur in the future.

  I have successfully installed Windows 8 about eight months ago, and all went well. Only the last change I made ??is to set Startmenu8, to get a more normal for the Windows look. Yesterday, my computer screen went dark blue and the mouse does not seem to work. I changed the battery and reboot. But all I get is my desktop, taskbar, and not ikony.Programmy not appear at the bottom, but do not open the maximum so I can not use them. I have a Dell desktop and run the diagnostics on the F12 at startup. All right in line with this. I want to return to the previous item, but can not get in Windows, to do it. Any suggestions gratefully received.

• iSCSI drives suddenly inaccessible or corrupted

  I have two NAS (Seagate Black Armors) connected to our network through iSCSI to a Dell Optiplex 760 running 32-bit Windows 7 and Windows iSCSI Initiator. For some unknown reason within the last week both are reportedly inaccessible and/or corrupt (that is the error message generated when I attempt to open the on the iSCSI computer). However, connecting to either of them via direct IP goes off without a hitch. I've tried Error checking but received "The disk check could not be performed because Windows could not access the disk." I've tried System Recover to a date almost two weeks back thinking Windows update may have caused the issue but there is no change. Anyone have an explanation and/or a solution to get them reconnected? Thanks.

  I have a 500GB HDD on my desktop, and there are two partitions as C and D. The computer would not start and shows me a error message. Notice - Hard drive self monitoring system has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends you that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard. So I took the hdd out of the desktop and made a USB external HDD. My laptop recognizes the hard drive as “I” drive and “J” drive. I am able to click “J” and see folders and files. But there is no response when I click “I” while it makes weird clicking sound. Can anyone explain why I drive doesn't work while J drive works on same physical hard drive? Is there anyway that I can fix?

I typed commands in grub rescue: ls (hd0, gpt2), `no such partition' is shown set, `prefix=((null),gpt2)/grub' is shown I don't know why /efi/ubuntu/grubx64.efi doesn't recognize disk. another strange thing is that there is only 1 file in /efi/ubuntu

• Monitors blank after restart [closed]

  i need help on the following issue. We have Dell T1650 PCs with 2 nvidia graphic adapters / Windows 7 and 4 attached monitors. At initial start all screens are blank, the computer does not show anything. If powered off by pressing the hardware power button and then restarting all monitors show a picture. The Windows event log shows only the errors, that the machine was shut down unexpectly. The last entry with blank screen seems to be that user specific dlls for every application are loaded. How can I find out the real problem?

• My laptop keeps hard resetting

  I have had this laptop for a long time (five years at least) and it hasn't had the best treatment over the years. But over the last few months, it has been randomly completely shutting down, no blue screening, no steady shutdown, just black screen, then BIOS. I think it might be happening as I do a save, but cant be sure, but recently it has been getting very annoying. I did initially think it was an overheating issue, but the speed that it comes back online is staggeringly fast for it to have cooled down sufficiently. plus it has got incredibly hot before with no issue (since its been doing this). Does anyone know what might be going on? Dell Inspiron 640m, running Windows 7.

  I have just purchased a copy of Windows 8.1 32-bit/64-bit from the MSDNAA program through my University. It came as an .iso file so I burned it to a DVD and installed / registered without any issues. I just found out it's a 32-bit install though, and I'm running a 64-bit laptop (Dell Studio 1555). The exact produce name I purchased is Microsoft Windows 8.1 Professional 32/64-bit (English). Is that just another name for "32-bit version that also works on 64-bit machines"? I have 4GB and I would like to code for 64-bit architectures so not having a 64-bit environment will be a real pain. I didn't see any options to choose the install type (it had Windows 7 64-bit previously but I completely wiped it). Any ideas?

• Windows 7 very slow after restart, but fine after complete shutdown?

  I have a Dell pc running Windows 7 with the Intel i3 processor. Whenever I restart the computer, the os crawls. For example, I move the mouse and then I see it move on the screen 10 seconds later... Everything runs slowly. This happens only on a restart (it's fine when I turn it on after it has been shut down). Any ideas what is causing this (I haven't installed any new software since buying it). Does it sound like a hardware or software issue?

• Slow remote desktop connection to VPS

  When I use Windows 7's remote desktop connection to our company's VPS (Win Server 2008 32bit) I receive a very slow connection - most of the times it actually grinds down to a complete halt. This is in contrast to my team mates which have no problem remoting to the VPS. I'm using a brand new Dell Studio 1558 laptop with Intel Core i7 and 4GB RAM with a clean installation of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. Any suggestions for how to diagnose \ solve \ workaround the problem would be appreciated. UPDATES: I checked, and it seems the problem exists with all the computers connected to my home LAN. Once I take my laptop to the nearest coffee shop it works fine. What could be the problem with the LAN?

• Unable to read DVD on laptop

  I have a DVD disk that I created on an HP laptop. I believe it was setup to be accessed as a USB device. I do not have that laptop any longer and I still would like to access the files on that DVD from my current DELL laptop but it can not open the disk. My guess, the session nwas not closed on the disk and for some reason the new laptop can not read it. My question is, is there any way I can access the files using new laptop, of do I need to find similar HP to try to access the files and possibly close the session? • Vista Startup - Cannot Find the File Specified

  Yesterday I restarted my laptop because my Wi-Fi catcher wasn't working correctly, and when the computer reached the login screen, instead of showing my user account it said "Cannot find the file specified". I rebooted and ran the Startup Repair and Memory Diagnostics but nothing showed up. I also took the battery out for a minute and tried again but still no luck. The weird thing is that I cannot even boot into safe mode, it still shows the same error. I don't remember downloading or opening anything suspicious recently, and I have 3 different cleaners/anti-malware programs as well that I usually run about once a week. I did go into the registry recently but I didn't modify or delete anything as I was only checking to see if I had a certain key in it. I have a Dell laptop running Vista Home Basic SP2. If I have to I can reinstall the OS with the CD or even take it to Best Buy but I'd rather try and fix it first. Thanks.

• Windows XP screen chopped off

  One of the teachers at the school I support has a Dell Latitude E5500 and about 3/4 of the desktop shows just fine, but the right 1/4 shows whatever was on there last, like it's not refreshing (yes I tried refreshing the screen). For example if I open up Internet Explorer then minimize it the left 3/4 minimizes, but the right 1/4 stays pulled up. If I change the screen resolution to 800x600, it works perfectly fine. The sceen works together and has no problems. The only way I have found to get rid of this is to reload the laptop. How can I resolve this permanently?

• How to prevent Windows 8 of erasing GRUB?

  I'm doing dualboot with Ubuntu and Windows 8 on my DELL Laptop. EFI is enabled, secure boot is not. My partitions are GPT. Everything seems to work for some time. After some normal use, GRUB stops working. The "ubuntu" EFI entry is still there on top of everything else. But the computer boots directly into the Windows Bootloader, skipping GRUB. Any clues on why is that happening or how can I prevent that? My current partiton setup is: - /dev/sda1 NTFS Windows recovery - /dev/sda2 FAT32 UEFI boot (with boot flag) - /dev/sda3 unknown (msftres flag) - /dev/sda4 NTFS Windows Drive C - /dev/sda5 ext4 /home - /dev/sda6 ext4 / I usually reinstall GRUB through chrooting from a Live Session and doing a apt-get install --reinstall grub-efi-amd64.
