• is there evidence that offshoring is causing developer salaries to go down? [closed]

  I realize this is a controversial and political topic. I'm trying to decide if offshoring is something that is effecting our industry in any substantial way or if it's just some bugaboo. I've read various posts on SO about it, but none addressed the idea of evidence for offshoring. Studies, papers, opinions of people who know about such things etc. I hear a lot about offshoring and its effect on our job market. However it all seems to be hearsay and conjecture. It does seem like some people are genuinely worried about it. This offshoring thing has been going on for quite some time, should be enough time for some real data to come out. If I had to pick a number I'd say it started during the dotcom boom -- a time when the need for developers far outweighed the local talent pool. We're now in a time when the talent pool is expensive and corporate wallets are tight, seems like an ideal time to find a good cheap developer in some other country. But is that actually happening? From reading some posts here on SO, I've concluded that offshoring is a really tough thing to do right. There are a lot of companies who think (or say) they can do it right, but some small percentage of them are actually able to pull it off. Is offshoring affecting the job market in any measurable way? Is offshoring measurable at all? Do we need to stop worrying about this?

• Should a developer be a coauthor to a paper presented about the application they developed?

  In our organization, project teams come up with a need and funding and developers are given a basic scope and are allowed to develop the solution. There is a certain degree of implementation freedom given to the developers. They drive the solution to pilot and live deployment from its inception. If the solution is presented in a conference as a technical paper/white paper what is the protocol for the list of authors: because for the most part I see the project manager's and the dev team manager's names as authors but no mention of the actual developer. Is this correct? A lot of us developers feel pretty bummed to never see our names as the coauthors. Appreciate any pointers. Answers to the FOLLOW UP questions (1) in what field of study is the paper, and what are the standards of authorship for that field? The paper is for Flood Plain Management - there is nothing on the abstract guidelines, I have called the contact person listed for comment - waiting to hear. 2) was the paper literally about the software application as your question implies, or were the software issues incidental to the topic of the paper? The paper specifically deals with a GIS Application that is used in Coastal Engineering, yes the software is not incidental, but the meat of the paper and mentioned in the Title. 2

  One trend I see in the awesome developers I've met, is that they devote inordinate amounts of time to coding at the expense of (usually) their health. Personally, I also find it hard to motivate myself to keep healthy. Every now and again, I meet a fantastic coder who has it clocked; they are up to date with the latest dev news, have time to read about good programming practices, and to finish it off, have happy wives/husbands and families. How do you guys/gals manage it in the short 24 hours a day that we all have?

The question was closed! Obviously it isn't and I'm going to explain why if needed but it can be seen: the question is unique, is the case/story of a young who have SPECIFIC experience with C++ , VB and Assembler and asking, knowing this specifications an answer (It is not a general question like "hey I'm young can I do the programmer??") Let me know your opinion! do you think this question should or should not be closed? And let's think about also the people not only the "data" and "cases covered" ... do you think this is important too? or is better to keep a place where people doesn't count?

• Legality of similar games

  This is my first question on GD.SE, and I hope it's in the right place. A little background: I'm an amateur (read: not explicitly employed to develop games, but am employed as a software developer) game developer and took a ComSci with Games Development degree. My Question: What is the legal situation/standpoint of creating a copycat title? I know that there are only N number of ways of solving a problem, and N number of ways to design a piece of software. Say that an independent developer designed a copycat game (a Tetris clone in this example) for instance, and decided to use that game to generate income for themselves as well as interest for their other products. Say the developer adds a disclaimer into the software along the lines of "based on , originally released c. by ." Are there any legal problems/grey areas with the developer in this example releasing this game, commercially? Would they run into legal problems? Should the developer in this example expect cease and desist orders or law suit claims from original publishers? Have original publishers been known to, effectively, kill independent projects because they are a little too close to older titles? I know that there was, at least, one attempt by a group of independent developers to remake Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sega shut them down. I also know of Sega shutting down development of the independent Streets of Rage Remake. I know that "but it's an old game, your honour," isn't a great legal standpoint when it comes to defending yourself. But, could an independent developer have a law suit filed against them for re-implementing an older title in a new way? I know that there are a lot of copycat versions of the older titles like Tetris available on app stores (and similar services), and that it would be very difficult for a major publisher to shut them all down. Regardless of this, is making a Tetris (or other game) copycat/clone illegal? We were taught lots of different things at University, but we never covered copyright law. I'm presuming that their thought behind it was "IF these students get jobs in games development, they wont need to know anything about the legal side of it, because their employers will have legal departments... presumably" tl;dr Is it illegal to create a clone or copycat of an old title, and make money from it?

• What to do when you inherit an unmaintainable codebase?

  I'm currently working at a company with 2 other PHP developers aside from me, and 1 junior developer. The senior developer who originally built the system we're all working on has resigned and will only be here for a matter of weeks. The other developer, who is the only other guy who knows anything about the system, is unhappy here and is looking for a new job. I'm very real danger of being left behind as the only experienced developer on this codebase. Since I've joined this company I've tried to push for better coding standards, project documentation, etc and I do think I've made some headway, but the vast majority of the code is simply unmaintainable and uncommented. A lot of this has to do with the need to get things done fast at points in the project before I joined, but now the technical debt is enormous, even with the two developers who do understand the system on board. Without them, it will simply be impossible to do anything with it. The senior developer is working on trying to at least comment all his code before he leaves but I think the codebase is simply too vast to properly document in the remaining time. Besides, when he does comment it still doesn't make things as clear as it could. If the system was better organized and documented I could probably start refactoring it incrementally, but the whole thing is so tightly coupled that it's very difficult to make any changes in one module without having unintended knock-on effects in other modules. Naturally, there's no unit tests either, and I honestly don't think this codebase could possibly be unit tested anyway given how it's implemented. There also never seems to be enough time to get things done even with 3 developers and 1 junior developer. With one developer and one junior, neither of which had significant input into the early design of the system, I don't see how we could possibly get anything done with keeping the current system working, implementing new features as needed and developing a replacement for the current codebase that is better organized. Is there an approach I can take to cope with this situation, or should I be getting my own CV in order as well at this point? If it was just me and the junior designer who would be left I'd go for the latter option almost without question. However, there's a team of front-end developers and content managers as well, and I'm worried what would become of them if I left and put them in a position where there would be no developers at all. The department might just be closed down altogether under such circumstances, and then I'd have their unemployment on my conscience as well!

• compiling iphone program in snow leopard wtih libsqlite3 library

  Hi, I develop an iphone application which uses sqlite3 as a database. That time my OS X version was leopard. So add added libsqlite3.0.dylib to frameworks and compile without any problems it complied and with any problems I could run it on the device as well. This week I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac. Removing old Leopard version and install a fresh Snow leopard system. But my problem is now I cannot compile that program because it will give errors with sqlite3 library. I added sqlite3.0.dylib using selecting targets and then selecting file. Also tried adding selecting it from directly /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib I get two different errors when I compiled to device and to simulator when compiled to device, ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib, file is not of required architecture* When compiled to simulator, ld: warning: in /opt/local/lib/libsqlite3.0.dylib, file was built for unsupported file format which is not the architecture being linked (i386) ld: warning: in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib/libSystem.dylib, missing required architecture i386 in file ld: in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneOS3.1.3.sdk/usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib, missing required architecture i386 in file Command /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 failed with exit code 1 i also tried with adding sqlite3.dylib (, I think sqlite3.0.dylib is linked to sqlite3.dylib.) but no luck. • How to deal with forward declaration / #import in Cocoa Touch (Objective-C cross C++) correctly?

  I am trying to write this header file: //@class AQPlayer; //#import "AQPlayer.h" @interface AQ_PWN_iPhoneViewController : UIViewController { AQPlayer* player; } @end AQPlayer is a .mm file written in C++. I tried to make a class forward declaration here, but it complains to me: error: cannot find interface declaration for 'AQPlayer' So I tried to "#import" the header file instead, but it complains something completely off and weird.   Using CentOs, I want to run a script as user 'training' as a system service. I use daemontools to monitor the process, which needs a launcher script that is run as root and has no tty standard in. Below I give my four different attempts which all fail. : #!/bin/bash exec >> /var/log/training_service.log 2>&1 setuidgid training training_command This last line is not good enough since for training_command, we need environment for trqaining user to be set. : su - training -c 'training_command' This looks like it (http://serverfault.com/questions/44400/run-a-shell-script-as-a-different-user) but gives 'standard in must be tty' as su making sure tty is present to potentially accept password. I know I could make this disappear by modifying /etc/sudoers (a la http://superuser.com/questions/119376/bash-su-script-giving-an-error-standard-in-must-be-a-tty) but i am reluctant and unsure of consequences. : runuser - training -c 'training_command' This one gives runuser: cannot set groups: Connection refused. I found no sense or resolution to this error. : ssh -p100 training@localhost 'source $HOME/.bashrc; training_command' This one is more of a joke to show desparation. Even this one fails with Host key verification failed. (the host key IS in known_hosts, etc). Note: all of 2,3,4 work as they should if I run the wrapper script from a root shell. problems only occur if the system service monitor (daemontools) launches it (no tty terminal I guess). I am stuck. Is this something so hard to achieve? I appreciate all insight and guidance to best practice.
