• Sluggish Windows SBS 2003

  One of my customers has a Windows 2003 Small Business Server which at this point is basically the DC, DNS, Fileserver and Symantec Protection Manager. I have disabled Exchange because I moved their mail to Google Apps. The server is extremely sluggish when doing anything. It is most noticeable when a dialog box is open (say the System properties), and you try to change tabs. This is usually instant, but on this machine can take 3-5 seconds. What additional services / packages can I uninstall from this machine knowing that it is only performing the above roles? Will removing the "Small Business Server" package in Add / Remove Programs get rid of a few unnecessary things? Any other thoughts? P.S. I know Symantec Endpoint and the Protection Manager are hogs, but I have nothing to replace the solution with at the moment. Thanks, Tom UPDATE: I looked over the different performance metrics, but nothing stood out as a problem. One of my friends mentioned Symantec's log and temp files can get quite huge and slow things down, so I ran CCleaner on the machine and found close to 3 GB of Symantec "stuff." Removed that and now the machine is MUCH better. I am still unsure why the data just sitting there would cause such a slowdown. The drive is not even near full. The only thing I can imagine is that Symantec must have to run through this stuff now and then.

• Automounting Active Directory home drives on a Linux server on login

  I've got a Centos 5.7 box authenticating against Active Directory through PBIS Open (the new LikeWise Open), which works well. Now, I'm trying to get the server to automount the user's AD home directory, located at //ad.server.dom/shares/home directories (Yeah, it's a space in the path. I didn't set this up). Each user has a directory in there with the same name as the user. I've tried to get pam_mount working, but it has a series of issues on RedHat and friends, and I can't seem to get that working. The directory does need to be automounted for the server to perform it's role. My reading on automount seems to suggest that there's no way to get it to do it's thing with authentication, though I'm happy to be proved wrong. I've looked at this resource, but it requires version RedHat (thus CentOS) 6 or higher, and newer packages than I have. I can manually (As root) mount the AD directory using the command mount.cifs "//ad.server.dom/Shares/home directories/testuser" /home/local/AD/testuser/nfs_mount/ -o username=testuser and when I log in as testuser, I can see all of the sample files in the nfs_share directory. Any tips towards the right direction would be highly appreciated. This is going to be on a server at a college, so it needs to be fairly stable, and would lead towards more Linux adoption there.

• Dos/ Flood Lag even though Port not Saturated

  My GameServers had been under some UDP Floods due to which they generated outputs to the attacker which gave the GameServers some huge lags. Thanks to friends at ServerFault that upon different kind of testing, I was able to successfully block the attack. My question is actually something else but it is important to know how the GameServers reacted to the attack and if the machine kept stable or not: 300kb/s Input would cause GameServer to generate 2mb/s Output. So as the Input Rate kept increasing, output rate would reach so high that it would no longer be possible for the GameServer to control it and hence it would give a huge Lag until the attack is stopped. Usually the game server starts to lag when it sends out something greater than 5mb/s and under that is controllable. Theoretically, I was able to receive a 60mb/s output from my GameServer on inputting 10mb/s. Its just the way the GameServer works if not protected. Now on some of my machines, only the GameServer under attack lagged and although the server was generating 60mb/s output, rest of the gameservers on other ports would run fine without lags on the same machine. But there was another machine which also runs on a 100 MBPS Network port, even 1 mbps input ( and ZERO output because attack is blocked ) even on an unused port would give a constant yellow line ( on the Lag-o-Meter ) to all the clients on all GameServers indicating lag because that line is actually blue under normal conditions. It would remain the same even on 50mbps or 900mbps input. I tried contacting the host about it because I believe its the way their Network is bridged, but they can't help me about it. Anyone else knowing about such issues because if 900mbps input does not Saturate the port, how can 1mbps input lag the servers although port is not saturated and enough bandwidth is available?

• django : nginx : jquery css not being served

  I'm using apache+mod_wsgi for django. And all css/js/images are served through nginx. For some odd, reason when others/friends/colleagues try accessing the site, jquery/css is not getting loaded for them, hence the page looks jumbled up. My html files use code like this - <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://x.x.x.x:8000/css/custom.css"/> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://1x.x.x.x:8000/js/custom.js"></script> My nginx configuration in sites-available is like this - server { listen 8000; server_name localhost; access_log /var/log/nginx/aa8000.access.log; error_log /var/log/nginx/aa8000.error.log; location / { index index.html index.htm; } location /static/ { autoindex on; root /opt/aa/webroot/; } } There is a directory /opt/aa/webroot/static/ which have corresponding css & js directories. The odd thing is that the pages show fine when I access them. I have cleared my cache/etc, but the page loads fine for me, from various browsers. Also, I don't see any 404 any error in the nginx log files. Actually the logs for nginx are not getting refreshed at all. I restarted the nginx server using root, is that incorrect ? There is a user www-data defined in the nginx configuration file. Any pointers would be great.

• Problem with network after malware attack

  Im trying to help some friends with a Win XP machine. I got rid of the malware using Malware Bytes, and HiJackThis. But now they(I) have another problem. When the computer boot into Windows it seems fine. When I start Internet Explorer the browser window opens just fine, but nothing happens for at minute or two. After the two minutes of waiting, the network icon appears in the taskbar next to the clock, and then everything works. The computer is connected to the internet using a Ethernet adapter. I have looked at the Rvent Log and found an error from Perfnet with eventid 2004 <Provider Name="PerfNet" /> <EventID Qualifiers="49152">2004</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> What I have tried so far: In the device manager i have uninstalled the Ethernet adapter and installed it again. I have uninstalled and installed the Windows File and Printer Sharing service. I have verified that both server and workstation services are started. What should I do next?

• .htaccess redirect to error page if port is not 80

  I'm running a portable server through usb stick. The thing is I also have WAMP installed in my local machine and Apache somehow gets started on windows startup, because of some random reason which I don't recall now and it can't be changed. I want to prepare my portable server in situations like this, so closing httpd.exe from process and starting my portable server is not an option. Anyway, because of already active httpd.exe my portable server's WordPress site can only be accessed through localhost:81 - this is a problem as WP site is very dependent on the URL and I don't want to include the url with port on WP database. Here is what I want to do through .htaccess: On any path except for error.php file check if not port 80 If not port 80 redirect to /error.php?code=port It it possible for it to have priority over WP redirection or URL handling? In the error.php I provided info on how to manually close httpd.exe and such so my family and friends can access the portable site. It's sort of like a gallery and calender application for events and other such stuff... Please help? I'm I can't figure it out at all. I know others may not have apache already running, but I want to prepare for such a situation.   My friends have persuaded me to "try again" (about the 5th time in about 12 years) with emacs. I'm currently suffering a little, and need help with emacs + utf-8. I'm running the 23.3.1 emacs gui on Windows 7 with my own custom keyboard layout (built with MS Keyboard Layout Creator). The layout has a full ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) character set, plus some additional characters from ISO-8859-9 (Latin-5, gis etc for Turkish) and w for Welsh (don't know where that one lives). In my .emacs, I have (blindly) added these lines: ;; key board / input method settings (setq locale-coding-system 'utf-8) (set-terminal-coding-system 'utf-8) (set-keyboard-coding-system 'utf-8) (set-language-environment 'UTF-8) ; prefer utf-8 for language settings Now, when I enter characters from ISO Latin-1 from the keyboard, they are accepted without problems, but characters from outside Latin-1 are "translated" to an approximate character in Latin-1. Thus, for example, Latin-5 "g" gets converted to a plain "g". Cutting and pasting, however, work fine. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I should like to make everything I do with emacs utf-8 with BOM.

• Computer does not boot after ram upgrade

  I have a Dell Optiplex GX520 desktop (it's abount 5 yr old) PC with 512 MB DDR2 RAM. Since my computer always swapping I thought I should upgrade my RAM. I bought a Kingmax 2GB DDR2 RAM. But my system does not boot. The status leds are on 2 and 4. The user manual says 'video card failure' wtf? I put back the original module and everything works. I tried many combinations. When I leave the old 512 RAM in and put the 2GB next to it to the other socket my system completes the POST and I'm able to enter the BIOS menu. It says my system has 2.5 GB installed, one 0.5GB and one 2GB in dual asymmetric channel mode. It's seemingly right. Exiting the BIOS setup GRUB loads successfully, but when I try to boot Ubuntu it crashes with kernel panic immediately. Trying to load Windows XP does not get past the loading screen, it crashes with 0x8E stop error. Does this mean the ram I bought is faulty? Or is it just mean that the memory module I bought is too new to be handled my computer? I this case I may exchange the RAM with my friends. No other computer is in my house (my very old box has DDR1 ram, my systers new box has DDR3 ones. I can't plug my memory in neither one.) I'm going to return the RAM to store to replace it with a better one tomorrow. Is there any hope to get this new module work?

• How do I restrict the Open/Save dialog in Windows to one folder?

  I spend a significant amount of time helping non-techies use their PC's. I realized most of that time is spent trying to explain to them how the Windows folder hierarchy works, where the "open file" dialog is pointing now, and how to find that Word document they saved. All this time, they're telling me they "just want to print the file". They refuse to learn how to read the PC screen, try to memorize a fixed set of steps, and end up calling me back to tell me their files disappeared again. I realize it's not productive to try to restrict where PC apps (e.g. Quicken) store files. But if there was a Windows utility I could turn on or off that would restrict the Open/Save dialogs in Windows apps, my noob user friends and I would save an enormous amount of time. The goal would be to have all files whose locations are chosen by the Save dialog saved to one folder, and have the Open dialog always point to that folder, until the utility is turned off. Does such a Windows utility exist?

  Hello, I need IMMEDIATE Help on a computer crime that I was arrested for. It may involve my computer, my ip, and my ex-girlfriend being the true criminal. The police do not tell you much they are very vague. I was charged though! So my questions are: -If someone did use my computer at my house and business and post a rude craigslist ad about a friend of my girlfriend at the time from a fake email address, how can I be the ONLY one as a suspect. Also how can I be charged. I noticed the last few days there are many ways to use other peoples computers, connections, etc. Here are a few things I found: You can steal or illegally use an ip addresss or mac address. Dynamic Ip is less secure and more vulnerable than static. People can sidejack and spoof your Mac, Ip, etc. There is another thing called arp spoofing. I am sure this is more things, but how can I prove that this happened to me or didnt happen to me. -The police contacted Craigslist, the victim, aol, and the two isp companies. They say they traced the IP's to my business and my home. My ex was who I lived with and had a business with has access to the computers and the keys to bothe buildings. My brother also lives and works with me. My business has many teenagers who use the computer and wifi. My brother is a college kid and also has friends over the house and they use the computer freely. So how can they say it was me because of an angry ex girlfriend.

• how to block spam email using Microsoft Outlook 2011 (Mac)?

  I'm using Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac and I'm getting so much spam I'm not sure how to control it. In the past, I always applied "Block Sender" and "Mark as Junk" to any spam email messages I received. This doesn't seem to be enough nowadays. Then I've started using Tools Rules to create rules based on subject, but the same spammer keeps changing subject lines, so this isn't working. I've been tracking the IP addresses they also seem to be changing with each email. Is there any key information I can use in the email to apply a rule to successfully place these spam emails in the junk folder? I'm using a "Low" level of junk email protection. The next higher level, "high", says it may eliminate valid emails, so I prefer not to use this option. There's maybe one or two spammers sending me emails, but the volume is very high now. I'm getting a variation of the following facebook email spam: Hi, Here's some activity you have missed. No matter how far away you are from friends and family, we can help you stay connected. Other people have asked to be your friend. Accept this invitation to see your previous friend requests Some variations on the subject line they've used include: Account Info Change Account Sender Mail Pending ticket notification Pending ticket status Support Center Support med center Pending Notification Reminder: Pending Notification How do people address this? Can it be done within Outlook or is it better to get a third party commercial software to plug-in or otherwise manage it? • How to share text, pictures and video to restricted set of users

  I want to share pictures and videos of my kid growing up but I don't want it to be open to the public. I just want me and my wife to be able to add material and then share with grandparents and friends who would be given a username/password or some other solution that authenticates them. This content would preferably be available remotely over the internet or downloaded periodically to the allowed viewers computers. The second option most likely means they would have to install a client, which I am not too fond of doing (I would have to ask them to install it, help configure for different platforms, ...) I'm at the start but I would like software that also allows export of the data (if one day I want to migrate to a different solution). Folder sharing I don't know if Windows folder sharing is reliable, robust and safe enough to share over the internet. Dropbox could be a software solution, but it's limited to 2GB and requires receivers to also install and configure software. A folder is just a collection of files, so it would be harder to keep them organized with text describing the pictures/video Email I could email the content every now and then but videos are almost always too big to go as attachments This would also not provide a history of updates to anyone just recently joining in Are there other solutions to achieve this? NOTE: I also thought that software to run a local or remote blog could be an option but we aren't allowed to ask those questions on superuser because one admin doesn't like cloud-computing questions. But if you do think it's the best approach and can suggest a solution, do state it in the answers anyway!

• Unable to Connect to just Google Servers

  I am in an extremely strange problem. I am unable to connect to just Google Servers. I am not able to access any site related to Google, Google.com | YouTube | Google+ | Webmaster Tools | jQuery CDN, nothing is working. I am able to open any other website (as I am posting this question on SuperUser), even the Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) are offline. Please Help!! Update 1: Google DNS are back online, YouTube is back online. But website on domain google.com is not working (ex: play.google.com, maps.google.com, google.com/search, etc). Update 2: I am able to access Google.com (only) with (one of) its IP addresss(s) listed below: 74.125.227.41 74.125.227.46 74.125.227.32 74.125.227.33 74.125.227.34 74.125.227.35 74.125.227.36 74.125.227.37 74.125.227.38 74.125.227.39 74.125.227.40 Update 3: I consulted my friends nearby and they said that they are also experiencing the same problem.   Hello. For my upcoming social networking website, I am looking for suggestions on the best way to implement emailing. Here are some of my requirements and constraints: Requirements: - Should be able to send emails based on events (new registrations, change password, etc.), promotions (advertisements based on user consent), bulk mails (newsletters), reminders (profile updates), etc. I hope I got the point through. - Should be able to process faults (incorrect email address, mail-box full, etc) - User initiated invites (inviting friends to connect) Constraints: - As of now I am looking at Godaddy for hosting. Subsequently I shall move to, may be Amazon Cloud. Godaddy seems to be excruciatingly conservative (not bad always) when it comes to the ability to send email. - My tests on Godaddy so far have been discouraging. There is limit to no. of emails I can send and sometimes if emails carries special characters it throws strange exceptions like there was a virus affected attachment (even though I hadn't attached a thing). The replies from Godaddy support have been equally funny. My intent is not to portray Godaddy as wrong but I am looking for a work-around that frees me from said constraints. I am looking for a mechanism / service that is either free of very cost effective. I wonder how other sites address this. Mine is a .Net / Windows based application.

• Custom Domain for Google App Engine and Google Apps

  I have set up and configured Google App Engine and Google Apps to use my custom domain with a cname 'www'. I have configured my DNS (via fasthosts.co.uk) with the cname and pointed it to ghs.google.com. I can access the website using the google app engine domain at capel-y-crwys.appspot.com but I can't access it via my custom domain www.capelycrwys.org.uk. I have allowed several days for propagation of the DNS etc. The really strange this is I can access the app via my custom domain when I use the web browser on my Android mobile phone. I can't access the app via my custom domain from my home internet connection, my work internet connection or a friends internet connection. I tried a few online web proxies and I can access the app via the custom domain. I posted this question on the google forums code.google.com/appengine/forum/?place=topic%2Fgoogle-appengine%2FfUP-G_0FKE4%2Fdiscussion and a commentor has said he could access the app via the custom domain. So why can't I access it direct via my home internet connection etc? I've tried loads of google searching and even found a similar sounding post here on serverfault serverfault.com/questions/208461/custom-domain-name-server-not-found-google-app-engine-and-google-apps but it doesn't have an answer that helps me.

• How to make a Windows Vista boot / recovery cd from a running system without using an original CD / DVD

  I have just repaired a friends computer (replaced motherboard) and now I am trying to repair the Windows (Windows Vista) partitions. Unfortunately, probably due to the fact that he tried to start it several times after the old motherboard had stopped working (no signal on video) now the partition table or the file systems (or both?) appear to be damaged. I managed to boot Windows a couple of times but could not complete the boot. I tried to repair the partition table and file systems using Linux RIP (booting from USB stick) but the Linux utilities say that the file system is damaged and I should run chkdsk /f from Windows. So I now need a Windows boot CD from which I can boot and run chkdsk or any other Windows utilities that can repair the file system. Is there an easy way to create such a CD? Or can I download it for free somewhere? All the links to Windows Vista boot / repair CD's I have found on the internet refer to non-free stuff. Any hint? EDIT I have a working laptop with Windows Vista installed. So one solution would be to make a bootable CD or USB from it so that I can boot the desktop and run the repair utilities. However, I do not have the Windows Vista installation DVD, because both computers were bought with Windows pre-installed.

• SBS DC DNS entries going missing?

  I've been looking at a problem on a friends SBS (2003) server where the client PC's aren't able to connect to the server with a variety of errors reported. Checking the server itself the only indicator of an issue is an error 5782: Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed with the following error: No DNS servers configured for the local system. Running a dcdiag reports that there are no DNS records registered for the DC so I fixed the problem by doing a netdiag /fix after which the dcdiag comes back clean and clients are ok again. It happened a few weeks ago as well and the same fix solved it. What are the possible causes of the DC DNS entries going missing? Is this a config option that needs tweaking or could it be solved by something simple like scheduling the SBS server to re-boot periodically? The only change they can think of that was made near to the time of the first instance of this problem occurring is that RRAS was started up to allow for a VPN connection from a home user. NB - The server is setup with a pair of NICs in a team so the server has a single virtual NIC providing both LAN/WAN connections to it. An external hardware firewall is in use rather than the windows firewall.

• Troubles Installing Windows 7 via USB. Flat install?

  Hi friends, I've been struggling with this for a while. Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise edition just will not install on my Shuttle K45 system via a USB key. It hangs out during the install while copying files or while creating the partitions. The system is pretty standard and low-tech: IDE hard drives, no CD, 2G RAM. I am not sure what of the problem. Other than the Shuttle, I have a Apple MacBook Pro. On the MPB, I am running OS X, and Mint Linux and Window XP over Parallels. I have an ISO of Win7 that works (I installed it as a Parallels VM to make sure). I have used UltraISO and MS Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool to write it to the 8G USB key. Both seem to copy all the files correctly (with UltraISO, I asked it to verify). It boots via USB and the install looks just fine. Until it hangs, most of the time with a copying error of 0x80070241. So now I am trying to figure out if there are other ways I can install Windows 7 on this Shuttle system that has no CD drive. I've heard about a flat installation, however those all seem to be doing something from within Windows. I do have access to a command prompt from the Windows 7 install. Does anyone know if/how I can prep the Shuttle hard drive with Windows 7 installation and have Windows 7 install from the hard disk. I do not have an external enclosure for the IDE HD and I do not have any other system I can hook up to the hard drives. I do have an external Maxtor OneTouch drive available.

• Why did you start with Linux ? And why did you continue using it ?

  I'd like to know the reasons that moved you towards Linux. Personally, I started because we had to use a Digital for the Fortran 77 exercises during my first year at the university. Linux was installed on many university computers, and I got interested in it. I always liked to code (on the C64) in basic and assembler, but I knew nothing about other languages. I soon discovered a chat engine called NUTS, and the idea of becoming proficient in C appealed me, so I started hacking the code. To do so, I needed a Unix at home, so I bought a Slackware 3.4 and installed it on my Pentium 166. I then continued using it for many years, reason being that I had pleasure in learning new things and the openness of information about the internals. It was a great learning platform. I then moved to osx because I enjoy the power of Unix with the beauty and efficiency of its interface. I am interested in your answer because I believe that the panorama has changed somehow. Although I still guess to find many "hackers" interested in Linux for the sake of knowledge, I also believe that there are other reasons (work, friends, bought a netbook).

• Reverse proxy for mailserver (SMTP + HTTP for web client)

  I'm looking at doing some reverse proxy work for a mail server with corresponding web client. Both servers are running on the same machine, this is not a server with a high load. :) The solution I've discussed with friends is having the mail server/web client on our internal network. Then to put a reverse proxy on the DMZ to service both SMTP and web client HTTP-traffic to the mail server on the internal network. From what I understand this is the recommended secure solution? So far I've thought for the SMTP-proxy part of using postfix which will receive mail, do some spamhause and similar anti-spam measures and if it all checks out, send the mail to the mail server on the inside. The mail server on the inside will send all outgoing mail to the proxy which will then send it out on the Internet. For the web client I'm not sure exactly which software I should be running on the proxy machine, I've been thinking about using Squid -- but that's basically based on the fact that I know squid is a http proxy. The web client data will be sent out over SSL. Reading around some here on Serverfault I've seen other people using Apache with mod_proxy+mod_security for similar situations. Am I thinking correctly for this solution? What software would you guys use and with which modules? Thanks in advance for the help! :)

• Windows Server 2012 Can't Print

  I know this may sound incredibly stupid and there is probably an easy solution but I can't seem to find it. Friends of mine recently upgraded their server for their small business from the POS old one. New hardware and a change from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012. I've got everything they need transfered over and running except for printing. They need to be able to print to printers in the vans their technicians use from the server via remote desktop. In other words the use a laptop to remote desktop into the server and need to print invoices out from the remote server to printers attached locally via usb. On the old server they just installed the identical driver and that was it, they could print as needed. On this server no matter what we seem to do we can't get it to print remotely, and in the process we also discovered that the server can't even print to the network printer. It sees the printer on it's network and it sees (through redirect) the printers in the vans but when you hit print it claims it did and nothing happens. There isn't an issue with the printers themselves as every other device we have can print to them without issues. Is there some setting that is inhibiting the server from printing? Is there something I need to install (print server?) to add the functionality? Thanks in advance for helping me out here

• How to make Thunderbird play nice with Google mail

  Thunderbird and gmail aren't exactly the best of friends. Gmail's tags mean that Thunderbird often downloads multiple copies of a single mail. Anything tagged in gmail will appear in a folder related to that tag, the "all mail" folder, and possibly the "inbox" and "sent mail" folders too. Thus a mail with multiple tags could potentially be stored more than four times in a local Thunderbird cache. This can make searching difficult, and is obviously wasteful of disk space. The best solution I have come up with is as follows. Operate a zero inbox policy (i.e. use the inbox for processing live mail only and archive everything else) which eliminates an extra copy in the inbox. Secondly, configure Thunderbird not to sync the "Sent Mail" folder - this is a bit of a pain, since I actually find it quite useful to be able to look through just the mails I've sent, but a search can duplicate this functionality. In this way, most of the duplicates are removed, and only mail with tags is stored locally more than once. Ideally, however, I'd only like one copy of each mail to be stored locally. I am surprised Thunderbird doesn't store mail by some sort of hashing algorithm to prevent precisely this problem - but it wouldn't be compatible with the way the folders are mirrored in a local directory structure, I suppose. Can anyone think of a better way to get Thunderbird to cache a Google mail account locally efficiently.

Now I want to make sure all of my file copy correctly and delete all the files in src folder, do you have any idea?
