• Cache that always returns immediate response?

  I have a web service that takes a while to build a response despite being tuned as best I can. What I'd like is some sort of cache sitting in front of the service which would always return the last known value from the service, but at the same time pass the request back to the service to build an up to date response for the next request. I'm aware of the limitations that this puts on the freshness of the data, but you can assume that I'm happy to live with that. The technologies I'm using at present are python uwsgi via nginx, but that need not be a limit to any solution you might suggest. Col

• Windows XP: How to boot up in normal mode after improper shut down?

  I work in two different locations and whenever there is a power outage at one of the locations, Windows XP detects that the system was improperly shutdown. Once the power is up, the PC powers on and Windows XP enters REPAIR/SAFE mode where only someone physically in front of the PC can control it. (Networking is all disabled in this mode) Now before it enters REPAIR/SAFE mode, there is an option for a NORMAL boot. But the catch is that REPAIR/SAFE mode is selected by default with a 30 second timer. Once it automatically enters REPAIR/SAFE mode and if nobody is at the other location, I have no way to remote control it anymore. And then I have to drive over to the other location and reboot it and select boot into NORMAL mode. Where can I change this setting so that Windows XP always boots into NORMAL mode no matter how many times it is improperly shut down?

• How can I sync Access databases and keep them up-to-date?

  I have an Access database on my server. We split it up and use the front-end database for search data and adding new records or reports in local computer. If we update or add a new record, that writes to the back-end of database. I want to use this database in the other building with other servers. Also, those servers have no direct connection. How can I sync both back-end databases to keep the database data up to date? These details may be useful: It's a big amount of data - about 25,750 client records. I guess there are more than 25 tables at 80 MB.

• Minimal Lync 2013 Setup

  I would like to install a Lync 2013 server at home. What would be the minimum requirements for it? I've seen the requirements and they seem pretty hefty, just want to know what I need for a basic set up. This will be for up to 5 users. I would like users to be able to connect from outside the network as well. From what I've been able to find, it looks like I'll need 3 servers. A domain controller, a lync front end server, and an edge server (for external connectivity, and it will need 2 network cards). Is that really all necessary? And how would they need to be connected (I've never connected a machine with multiple network cards)? Do they all have to be separate machines, or can I use VMs?

• Resolving Domainnames differently for different services

  Some time ago we had an issue with our network infrastructure and php with curl. Our Network infrastructure is fairly simple. LoadBalancer/Firewall = 5 servers The Domainname of our website is set to the ip of the Loadbalancer, of course. But calling curl from one of the servers did result in a timeout. It appears that a server could not call for its own domain it is serving. So we had to set the domains via /etc/hosts to the sever itself. But now We have implemented a Varnish in front of the Loadbalancer, which we want to automatically purge, once a change on a page happens. So now we need to call the domain www.example.com/url_to_purge. Sadly this call what be resolved to the server itself instead of the varnish, because of the /etc/hosts entries. So now I am wondering, if you could resolve domain names differently for different services :)

  Hi, Quick, hopefully easy question. Google is failing me. I don't want my text exactly centered. I want it maybe 7 characters (blank spaces) over. • Firefox on Windows 7 became an "always top" window

  I am using Mozilla Firefox 7.0.1 on a Windows 7 computer (home basic). I usually keep the browser window opened for a long periods of time, like three to four weeks, and I have many tabs opened in the window, like 300 to 900. Recently all of the sudden the Firefox window became "always top" window. I can minimize it, but when it is maximized, no other window can be displayed in front of it, only behind it. This is very inconvenient for me. Is there any fix that I can apply without restarting the Firefox window? Thank you.

• Windows Command queue?

  i'm thinking if does exist some kind of software that can put in a queue a bunch of windows commands... for example i can say to first copy some file somewhere, then rename those, then delete the old files, then edit one of them etc.... without waiting the effective execution of any of those passages.... this could be useful when copying big files that take a lot and i don't want to sit in front of the computer keeping the eyes on the progress bar... does exist anything like this?

• Is there a way to read the contents of the master boot record?

  Reading another question on here it made me curious if it's possible to actually read the contents of the mbr. As I understand it, there's a certain area at the very front of the partition that lists this information. I'm curious if it's sort of like an ini file or some sort of script that runs and tells the computer what it needs to know about where to boot from and other information like sectors, heads, cylinders that's important. I don't know much about what would be in it, but I thought it'd be interesting to learn more about the specifics.

• Maxivista vs. Synergy vs. hardware KVM switches [closed]

  I have 2 PCs on my desk, each one with its own screen, mouse and keyboard. And it's a pain moving from one PC to the other (even though they are one foot away from each other). So, it's time to change to different approach: KVM switches. What would you recommend for a setup like mine? I dont need to change monitors since they are both in front of me. I just need a way to change mouse and keyboard. I use Windows on both PCs and money is not an issue if it worth it. What would be the best option for a seamless integration of the two PCs? Edit: What about other software similar to Synergy, like Input Director? What's more convenient in your experience?

• Windows command FOR /F isn't working?

  I'm trying to use the FOR command in Windows XP's command line. I have a file temp.txt with 3 lines: temp1 temp2 temp3 And I'm typing the following command at the prompt: for /F %p in (temp.txt) do echo Testing %p Nothing comes back. If I remove the /F parameter, the output is Testing temp.txt. As far as I can determine, I'm using the command exactly as it is documented by Microsoft. I've checked my registry to make sure Command Extensions are on, and even started a new shell with cmd /e:on to be doubly sure. What am I doing wrong? Yes, I was doing something wrong. The file temp.txt wasn't created from scratch, I just edited it to put in my test content. Unfortunately when I created the file the first time, I saved it with a UTF-8 marker at the front. Recreating the file as plain text solved the problem.

• What is the best plan to handle server fault for google app engine [closed]

  I used google-appengine without preparing much backup plans before, but it looks like not a good idea anymore.... Since google app engine is quite hard to find a backup replacement, I plan to just add a "server error" page which will show while server fault. Currently I am thinking to: Use the cdn cloudfare in front of google app engine. It will also handle the NAME server for me. Prepare some static version of webpages (such as "Oops! the server fault") in another hosting platform While google app engine failed, I will switch the destination from google app engine to the static page by change the CNAME records on cloudfare. Is there any other recommand way to solve this situation?

• I think my computer is eating my USB devices

  Hi so I think the USB ports on the front of my desktop PC are eating all the devices that are plugged in. (I've found with a couple of USB disks I put at the start of the year, were then unusable on any device after wards). If this is the case, what's likely to be the problem, and how do I fix it? What would a good, simple way to diagnose the problem be? I'm a bit scared to put any of my USB devices in, because that sounds expensive. (I'm thinking I might look out for some cheap old disks).

• Why does the terminal in unity 2d (Ubuntu 11.10) always stay in the foreground?

  I have just updated to Ubuntu 11.10 and I am using unity 2d. My terminal applications (gnome-terminal or konsole) just won't go into background. When I move another application in front of them, they are still rendered, but the clicks are going through them. This behavior only appears when the terminal windows interact with another applications. I can move one terminal over another without a problem, but even the menu list of a terminal application can not be shown, since it is - for some unknown reason - "behind" the terminal. Any ideas what might be the cause of this problem? I do not have this problem with my other machines. The only difference is, that I am using unity 2d here and ("normal") unity at home.

  I work on computer for most of waking day and have been using a 13.3" laptop. I was planning to buy a good monitor/screen/display for sometime now but was lazy. Now I have developed Computer Vision Syndrome and buying a monitor has become immediate priority. I have spend some time on net and trying to understand what should I buy and why? I could only zero down on the size (20") and LED and looking for advice on many other factors like resolution, pixel density, panel technology and so forth. It will be great help if someone experienced can show shed some light on computer monitor best for the programmers spending 8 to 10 hours in front of the screen.

• Drawing a rectangular prism using opengl

  I'm trying to learn opengl. I did some code for building a rectangular prism. I don't want to draw back faces so I used glCullFace(GL_BACK), glEnable(GL_CULL_FACE);. But I keep getting back faces also when viewing from front and also sometimes when rotating sides are vanishing. • New SSIS tool on Codeplex – SSIS Log Analyzer

  I stumbled across a new SSIS tool on Codeplex today, the SSIS Log Analyzer which was only released a few days ago. Whilst it is a beta release and currently only supports 2005 (2008 is promised) it looks quite interesting. It seems to be a fancy log viewer, but with some clever features and a nice looking front-end. I’ve only read the documentation so far, but it has graphs and a debug view that shows your package with the colour animations similar to when debugging in BIDS, and everyone knows, the way the pretty colours and numbers change is the best bit! I’ll quote some of the features for you here and then let you make your own mind up, is it useful in the real world? Option to analyze the logs manually by applying row and column filters over the log data or by using queries to specify more complex criterions. Automated Performance Analysis which provides a quick graphical look on which tasks spent most time during package execution. Rerun (debug) the entire sequence of events which happened during package execution showing the flow of control in graphical form, changes in runtime values for each task like execution duration etc. Support for Auto Analyzers to automatically find out issues and provide suggestions for problems which can be figured out with the help of SSIS logs and/or package. Option to analyze just log file or log and package together. Provides a lightweight environment to have a quick look at the package. • Integrating Silverlight BING Maps with SharePoint 2010

WHAT? YOU HAVEN’T!? DAMMIT! You should! Seriously, the bing silverlight maps are way way way cooler than their google counterpart. They are simply mindblowing. Now, what if I told you, you could integrate those, and the power of the bing geocoding api, AND, the bing search engine, AND routing capabilities, all on a silverlight map, and throw in the Yahoo geocoding api over a REST interface, all running inside SharePoint? No seriously! I am not joking! In this video, I demonstrate exactly the above, all integrated and running happily inside of SharePoint 2010. Note that you can also make this work in SharePoint 2007. I used the Telerik Silverlight Controls to make all this happen. And as always, only about 2% of the video is slides, all of the rest is all hands-on code. • SQL SERVER – CTRL+SHIFT+] Shortcut to Select Code Between Two Parenthesis

  Every weekend brings creative ideas and accidents brings best unknown secrets in front of us. Just a day while working with complex SQL Server code in SSMS I came across very interesting shortcut which I have never used before and instantly fell in love with it. It is totally possible that you are familiar with this but for me it was the first time and I was surprised that I did know know this short cut so far. Shortcut key is CTRL+SHIFT+]. This key can be very useful when dealing with multiple subqueries, CTE or query with multiple parentheses. When exercised this shortcut key it selects T-SQL code between two parentheses. Let us see the examples to understand the same. In each of the examples I have put the cursor at the position displayed and pressed CTRL+SHIFT+] and it has selected the code between two corresponding parentheses. Cursor position 1 Cursor position 2 Cursor position 3 If you are a developer and have to code with complex queries, you will totally appreciate that this feature can save so much of the time for development. I often remember my experience as a developer when I have lost a lot of hours to just balance parentheses. As I said yesterday I found this shortcut accidently. As there is not much data in the Event Store at this point I used the $stats-127.0.0.1:2113 which is a stream containing performance statistics for Event Store and is updated every 30 seconds (default). Demonstration 3 (projections) On GitHub I have included a sample projection, Projection-ByRoom.txt, which will create streams based on the room on which a session was held on the DDDNorth3 agenda. Browse to the management console, http://127.0.0.1:2213.  Click on Projections, New Projection, give it a name, Sessions-ByRoom, and copy in the JavaScript in the Projection-ByRoom.txt file.  Select Continuous, tick Emit Enabled and then click on Post. It should run immediately. You may by challenged for the administration login for the management console, if so use the default user name and password; 'admin'/'changeit'. Demonstration 4 (C# client) The final demonstration was the Visual Studio 2012 project using the Event Store client – referenced directly as C:\EventStore\v2.0.1\EventStore.ClientAPI.dll, although you can switch this to the latest Event Store client NuGet package. • Zipcodes in CSV Generation

  When exporting to CSV format, then opening in a spreadsheet program like Excel zipcodes that start with a zero or zeroes have the preceding zeros stripped off. Obviously it is because the spreadsheet sees that column as integers and preceding zeros in integers are useless. A quick and dirty trick to force Excel (hopefully you are using OpenOffice) to display the full zipcode, we wrap it in double quotes and put an equal sign in front of it, to force it to be a string like this: $zipcode = 00123; $data = '="' . $zipcode . '"' ; So if you are doing the straight query to CSV export, using the fputcsv function it would look something like this. Basically just overwrite the value in the row and then continue along. while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($query)){         $row['zipcode'] = '="'.$row['zipcode'].'"';     fputcsv($output, $row); } php csv zipcode csv number csv force string

• CloudBerry Online Backup 1.5 for Windows Home Server

  Overview CloudBerry Online Backup version 1.5 is a front end application for Amazon S3 storage for backing up your Windows Home Server data. It makes backing up your essential data to Amazon S3 an easy process in the event the disaster strikes. Installation You install the Cloudberry Addin as you do for any addins for Windows Home Server. On a PC on your network, browse to the shared folders on your server and open the Add-Ins folder and copy over WHS_CloudBerryOnlineBackupSetup_v1.5.0.81S3o.msi (link below), then close out of the folder. Next launch the Windows Home Server Console, click Settings, then Add-Ins. Click on the Available tab and click the Install button. It installs very quickly, and when you get the Installation Succeeded dialog click OK. You will lose connection through the Console, just click OK, then reconnect. After reconnecting, you’ll see CloudBerry Backup has been installed, and you can begin using it. You can setup a backup plan right away or find out what’s new with version 1.5. Amazon S3 Account If you don’t already have an Amazon S3 account, you’ll be prompted to create a new one. Click on the Create an account hyperlink, which takes you to the Amazon S3 page where you can sign up. After reviewing the functionality of Amazon S3, click on the Sign Up for Amazon S3 button. Enter in your contact information and accept the Amazon Web Services Customer Agreement. You’re then shown their pricing for storage plans. The amount of storage space you use will depend on your needs. It’s relatively cheap for smaller amounts of data. Just keep in mind the more data you store and download, the more S3 is going to cost. Note: Amazon S3 is introducing Reduced Redundancy Storage which will lower the cost of the data stored on S3. CloudBerry 1.5 will support this new feature. You can find out more about this new pricing structure. Note: Keep in mind that after you first sign up for an Amazon S3 account, it can take up to 24 hours to be authorized. In fact, you may want to sign up for the S3 account before installing the Add-In. After you sign up for your S3 Account, you’ll be given access credentials which you can enter in and create a Storage Bucket name. Features & Use CloudBerry is wizard driven, straight-forward and easy to use. Here we take a look at creating a backup plan. To begin, click on the Setup Backup Plan button to kick off the wizard. Select your backup mode based on the amount of features you want. In our example we’re going to select Advanced Mode as it offers more features than Simple Mode. Select your backup storage account or create a new one. You can select a default account by checking Use currently selected account as default. Now you can go through and select the files and folders you want to backup from your home server. Check the box Show physical drives to get more of a selection of files and folders. This also allows you to backup files from your data drive as well. It has full support for drive extenders so you can backup your shares as well. The cool thing about Cloudberry is it allows you to drill down specific files and folders unlike other WHS backup utilities. Next you can use advanced filters to specify files and/or folders to skip if you want. There are compression and encryption options as well. This will save storage space, bandwidth, and keep your data secure. Purge Options allow you to customize options for getting rid of older files. You can also select the option to delete files from the S3 service that have been deleted locally. Be careful with this option however, as you won’t be able to restore files if you delete them locally. You have some nice scheduling options from running backups manually, specific date and time, or recurring daily, weekly or monthly. Receive email notifications in all cases or when a backup fails. This is a good option so you know if things were successful or something failed, and you need to back it up manually. Email notifications… Give your plan a name… Then if the summary page looks good you can continue, or still go back at this point if something doesn’t look correct and needs adjusting. That’s it! You’re ready to go, and you have an option to start your first backup right away. After you’ve created a backup plan, you can go in and edit, delete, view history, or restore files. Restoring Files using CloudBerry To restore data from your backups kick off the Restore Wizard and select the backup to restore from. You can select the last backup, a specific point in time, or manually browse through the files. Browse through the directory and select the files you need to restore. Choose the destination to restore the files to. You can select from the original location, a specific location, to overwrite existing files, or set the location as the default for future restores. If the files are encrypted, enter in the correct passwords. If the summary looks good, click on Next to start the restore process. You’ll be shown a progress bar at the bottom of the screen while the files are restored. After the process has completed, close out of the Restore Wizard. In this example we restored a couple of music files to the desktop of Windows Home Server… But as shown above you can save them to the original location, other network locations, or WHS shared folders. This can make it a lot easier to keep track of files you’ve restored. You can also access different options for CloudBerry by clicking Settings in WHS Console then CloudBerry Backup. Here you can set up a new storage account, check for updates, app options, Diagnostics, and send feedback. Under Options there are several settings you can tweak to get the best experience for your WHS backups. CloudBerry Web Interface Another nice feature is the CloudBerry Web Interface so you can access your data from anywhere you have an Internet connection. To check it out in WHS Console, click on the Backup Web Interface link…you’ll probably want to bookmark the link in your favorite browser. Note: This feature is still in beta and at the time of this review, the Web Interface wasn’t up and running so we weren’t able to test it out. Performance The Cloudberry app works very well through the Windows Home Server Console. The amount of time it takes to backup or restore your data will depend on the speed of your Internet connection and size of the files. In our tests, backing up 1GB of data to the Amazon S3 account took around an hour, but we were running it on a DSL with limited upload speeds so your mileage will vary. Product Support In our experience, the team at CloudBerry offered great support in a timely manner when contacting them. You can fill out a help request through a form on their website and they also have a community forum. Conclusion We were very pleased with CloudBerry Online Backup for WHS. It’s wizard driven interface makes it extremely easy to use, and offers comprehensive backup choices for your Amazon S3 account. CloudBerry will only backup files that have been modified, so if files haven’t been changed, they won’t be backed up again.They offer a free 15 day trial and is $29.99 after that for a full license. Once you buy the app you own it, and charges to your S3 account will vary depending on the amount of data you upload. If you’re looking for an effective and easy to use front end application to backup your Windows Home Server data to your Amazon S3 account, CloudBerry is a recommended affordable choice.
