  This question is in conjuction with How would you approach developing a Hotel Reservation System? The solution to a system with different interfaces(or clients i should say) is to go with developing a Web service and have other systems interact with it. I never had the requirement for developing a Web service so i am bit short on it. All i understand is that A web service is a system or application that performs some operations which may include modifying, sending or receiving data over a network using HTTP protocol. (Let me know if the understanding is wrong) Now, from the other question it's clearly understood that i need to develop a web service but i have no idea as to how should i go about it. My language of choice is C# and .NET Framework. Question:: How do we develop a webservice and which tools,technology and framework should i use for the same using C# language??   I'm a java web developer for nearly 3 years. Always trying to learn more and be better but still I feel that the amount of knowledge is not that good as I want. The knowledge in some places still seems to be non-systematic and don't provide a very strong base to solve the problems as good as I want to do it. The example I have is my senior developer, whose solutions are always more efficient and beautiful. So, the question is rather simple and hard the same time. What is the right way to get my knowlege be more systematic and therefore improve it's quality. I understand that there is no practically good answer for the all java programming, so let's focus on the modern java web or nearly web technologies: JSF 2.0 JPA2 and Hibernate as persistence provider Web services and Java SE as a core.   What Java web framework out there best supports a role of "web UI designer", that is, lets you: Use popular web design tools (xhtml validators, css editors, what have you) on your views/pages View changes without running on a server Rapidly prototype different UI options Supports a (somewhatly) clean separation between "developer" and "designer" (terminology intentionally vague) We, like many others, have found these capabilities sorely lacking in our large, legacy Struts 1.x apps that use lots of JSP fragments and includes. We've decided to port our apps to a JSR-168/268 portal environment, but we have not decided on what Java web framework will power the portlets. We're open to any kind (action-based, component-based, etc) and a key criterion is how well it supports the role described above. I'm intrigued by Tapestry which claims that its views are XHTML compliant pages (that simply have extra Tapestry-specific attributes added onto them to be processed at runtime). This sounds like it would play well with a web ui designer's toolkit. However, I'd like to know if this is what actually happens in the real world, or if compromises are necessary. Of course, if there's something much better than Tapestry, I'd love to hear about it!

  I have a wp mu 3.6.1 with domain mapping (0.5.4.3) with w3tc (0.9.3) and Google XML Sitemaps (4.0 BETA). I have 4 different sitemaps. sub-1.com/sitemap.xml sub-2.com/sitemap.xml sub-3.com/sitemap.xml sub-4.com/sitemap.xml on google webmaster i got 59 errors & 14 warnings. • Huge google impression drop after cleaning html

  Good morning, I am the webmaster of a non-profit organization that donates grants to colorectal cancer research projects and funds various colorectal cancer information campaigns. We have three domains: www.fundacioolgatorres dot org (Catalan) www.fundacionolgatorres dot org (Spanish) www.olgatorresfoundation dot org (English) So what happened? I redesigned olgatorresfoundation on the 20th and the fundacionolgatorres on the 30th of May. In both cases, exactly two days later, the number of impressions on both dropped to a halt. Granted, we did not have the traffic of Microsoft, but a 90% decrease a disaster of incredible proportions for us. My only real changes were cleaning up the old ineffective HTML to a cleaner form (mostly moving away from redundant table construction to a table-less view). Here is a before and after snapshot of what the change looks like: Before: http://www.fundacioolgatorres.org/aparell_digestiu/introduccio/ (unchanged page in Catalan) After: http://www.olgatorresfoundation.org/digestive_system/introduction/ (changed page in English) Anybody has a clue to what just happened? Why should a normal, sane html improvement be punished and so dramatically? No URLs have been changed, neither have page names or descriptions. Possible secondary question: If it is so that Google sees it as a major overhaul and decides to drop the pagerank sharply, does it come back to pre-change levels if the content "checks out" or will the page start over from scratch earning those pagerank points (which would mean that we would have to wait 6 months for the pages to recover to the level they had two weeks ago)? • Exposing business logic as WCF service

  I'm working on a middle-tier project which encapsulates the business logic (uses a DAL layer, and serves a web application server [ASP.net]) of a product deployed in a LAN. The BL serves as a bunch of services and data objects that are invoked upon user action. At present times, the DAL acts as a separate application whereas the BL uses it, but is consumed by the web application as a DLL. Both the DAL and the web application are deployed on different servers inside organization, and since the BL DLL is consumed by the web application, it resides in the same server. The worst thing about exposing the BL as a DLL is that we lost track with what we expose. Deployment is not such a big issue since mostly, product versions are deployed together. Would you recommend migrating from DLL to WCF service? If so, why? Do you know anyone who had a similar experience?

  I read an article today that listed some basic questions about web development: Describe how POST data was submitted to a server by a browser. Explain a number of HTTP status codes (except maybe 404 and 500). Explain SOLID or name a design pattern. Explain ways to improve a page load speed or user experience. The author says "if you can’t answer the questions above there are a lot of people who wouldn’t think of you as a Senior Web Developer." My questions are: How relevant are these questions in respect to real life web programming and scalability? How true is that statement? In other words, do you consider this knowledge a requirement to be considered a Senior Web Developer? I was able to answer all the questions, too easily it seemed, so I'm wondering whether it is effective to use these or similar questions to screen developers rather than asking them to write sample code.

  I usually used windows for developing desktop applications, but recently I've almost abandoned desktop apps and have been doing web development so much. I'm using many web technologies and languages, especially Ruby on Rails, and I'm facing too many problems using windows. Besides, I personally want to move to Linux. So, what's the most helpful and comfortable Linux distribution for web development? I have a short but handy experience using Ubuntu desktop, so I'm familiar with the generics of Linux (like -as a simple example- using the command line), and I don't have any problem in getting used to any distribution (I know I may face some difficulties, but again I have no problem), I only want the best one for web development (especially rails!!). If the question doesn't belong to this site, I'll be glad to migrate it to the appropriate one.

• Selecting the App Pool for a web custom folder in a Web Setup Project (Visual Studio)

  I've got a Web Setup Project in VS2008 that is taking the files for two web applications and turning them into a single setup package. This works and I have got it asking for the user to select the application pool but the application pool is only being applied to the project sat in the Web Application Folder and not the one in the Web Custom Folder that I added for the second project. How do I force it to set both applications to the same app pool? Thanks in advance for any help on this it seems like it should be simple but I've been mucking round with it for ages to no avail.

• Google analytics iframe code measuring visitor as two visitors

  I'm trying to measure visitors in an iframe and the site containing the iframe. What I would like is that visitors clicks in the iframe are seen being from the same visitor as the containing site, but somehow it is seen as two seperate visitors. I followed examples from http://www.blastam.com/blog/index.php/2011/02/google-analytics-cross-domain-tracking/, trimmed down to an even simpler version based on the comments about setDomainName not being needed anymore but with setDomainName I get the same result: a click on a page and a click on the iframe is seen as 2 clicks by 2 seperate visitors. • Migrating email forwarding entries from DirectAdmin to Google App (Free edition)

  I have a website hosted in a shared hosting account and it contains a DirectAdmin (DA) control panel. From there, I can see some email forwarding entries. I would like to migrate the email server to the Google App's, I am going to change the MX records to point to Google email server in the DA. For the existing email accounts that I see in the DA, I will re-create them in the Google App. But for those email forwarding entries, I am confused. If I keep them there, will they still work after I have changed the MX record pointing to the Google email server? If not, this means I will need to re-create them in the Google App, right? Unfortunately, Google App (Free edition) does not seem to allow email forwarding like those in DA. Unless I choose to use other editons (http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=175745). In DA, when I have created an email forwarding entry such as [email protected] - [email protected], I do not really need to create a dummy [email protected] email account and DA will still do the forwarding properly. The best I can do now, without upgrading the Google App edition, is to simply create dummy email accounts in the Google App and setup forwarding inside that email account, is this correct?

• Web Sites All Start When Debugging a Web Site - Visual Studio 2010

  I wanted to blog about this because it was an annoyance to me and I couldn't figure out why for quite some time. Have you ever tried debugging one web application in your solution but when you do, all other web sites in your solution build and then start up their respective Visual Studio Development Server? It's not a major problem, but it adds time to waiting for what you are actually trying to debug to start up. After digging through Visual Studio 2010 settings, I finally found the option to turn it off. It is called Always Start When Debugging and is located in the Properties pane for the web project (click on the project .proj file in Visual Studio IDE). This is set to True by default each time you create a new Web Application project. Setting this to false will solve your problems. You will need to set this to false for all web applications in your solution as shown below: In addition, you can set properties on which port the development server uses each time it debugs. This is helpful if you want the port to stay the same for testing purposes. In contrast, you can set it to use a dynamic port each time so if you have a co-worker that is debugging it on a different session on the same server, you won't run into any problems with using the same port. The machine won't allow you to debug two sessions on the same port. Pretty basic stuff but it seemed like a really quirky setting to me.

• Google Analytics async=true seems wrong in the Google documentation?

After looking at my tracking codes to ensure they are correct, I noticed that the ga.async = true statement is specified differently most of the time and is never set to a value of true, it's often set to async but never true. Could this be stopping my Analytics data from posting to the second tracker? or might it be something else? Also what calls should I look for in the Net tab in firebug to ensure that GA is being called when the page loads?

• Web Service URL change is not recognized

  I deployed in a production environment a .net solution that consumes a web service added as "Service reference" in visual studio. Today the endpoint URL has changed, and I modified that URL in web.config. But when I run the solution I get the error: System.ServiceModel.FaultException: Server did not recognize the value of HTTP Header SOAPAction: http://93.62.150.200/LogEvent. Now that sound strange to me. As you can see, the IP is 93.62.... but the new value is different. The web.config entry (with the new value or the URL) is: <client> <endpoint address="http://213.92.50.215/sawfc/WS_SAWFC_Int.asmx" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="wsSAWFCInterfaceSoap" contract="it.datasphere.ws.wsSAWFCInterfaceSoap" name="wsSAWFCInterfaceSoap" /> </client> I cannot reach the new web service from dev environment, so I cannot modify the Service reference there. • What should every programmer know about web development?

  What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web application before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also, I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? In what circumstances, and why? Provide a link to the standard's specification.

• In Google Webmaster Tools we have 3 sitemaps attributed to 1 domain

  Thanks for you advice and help ahead of time I have a website that has been on the internet for almost 10 years created in "Microsoft Frontpage" with over 900 pages. Currently in Google Webmaster tools it shows up as 2 domains and 3 sitemaps: http://www.example.com example.com hostedsitmaps.com Furthermore, since we were having hard to placing the xml sitemap on our site(Frontpage Issues) we decided to hire pro-sitemaps.com to create, host and upload the xml file which they did. Thus, I have another site hostedsitemaps.com on our webmaster tools for the site. Hosted sitemaps shows: 900 urls submitted 800 Indexed. Crawl errors and Search queries: No data available http://www.example.com shows: 889 URLs submitted 1 URLs indexed. Crawl Errors: 14 Soft 404 796 Not found Search Queries: 8104 example.com shows: 889 URLs submitted 1 URLs indexed Crawl errors: 48 Soft 404 91 Not found Search Queries: 8104 My questions and need for help are as followed: 1. Why are our domain based sites in webmaster tools ( example.com and http:www.example.com) showing only 1 URL indexed while the hostedsitemap has 800 indexed? 2. Should we have 3 domains configured for this "one" domain in Google Webmaster tools? 3. Should we eliminate/delete the hostedsitemap from webmaster tools completely and take off that XML sitemap? 4 Does having example.com and http://www.example.com impact web ranking? 5. Any other thoughts or help in this very complicated matter for us. Thanks.

• System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission Exception on New Deployment

  I have a friend that is moving a web application from one server over to another. The new server has the same settings as the first server, however, he's running into a Security issue. Here's the error details: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. The Event Viewer does not point to anything specific in the web.config file or anything. The web applicaiton is on the C: drive. This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 server with a brand new IIS 7 installation. IIS is set in classic mode for this app pool.

  This is on a Surface Pro. I have not installed a virtual machine. Here is Google's feedback on the error message I receive when attempting login: "Login failed.
