• Idle hard disk makes noise.

  Like a fan or something. I checked it. I stopped all fans (cpu, video, psu) and the noise was still there. I read online that it might be a motor or something. I have put a great deal of effort making my pc quiet. Installed a quiet psu and cpu fan, reduced the fan speed of my video card, bought a ssd... But my drive for data makes this noise. I would never have expected that. Do all hard disks make this kind of noise? I guess most people won't notice it because of the other fans they have in the system, I however can hear it quite clearly because all my other fans are almost silent. So should i get a new one or should i just live with it, considering that i might end up with a drive that also makes this noise.

• Raid-5 Performance per spindle scaling

  So I am stuck in a corner, I have a storage project that is limited to 24 spindles, and requires heavy random Write (the corresponding read side is purely sequential). Needs every bit of space on my Drives, ~13TB total in a n-1 raid-5, and has to go fast, over 2GB/s sort of fast. The obvious answer is to use a Stripe/Concat (Raid-0/1), or better yet a raid-10 in place of the raid-5, but that is disallowed for reasons beyond my control. So I am here asking for help in getting a sub optimal configuration to be as good as it can be. The array built on direct attached SAS-2 10K rpm drives, backed by a ARECA 18xx series controller with 4GB of cache. 64k array stripes and an 4K stripe aligned XFS File system, with 24 Allocation groups (to avoid some of the penalty for being raid 5). The heart of my question is this: In the same setup with 6 spindles/AG's I see a near disk limited performance on the write, ~100MB/s per spindle, at 12 spindles I see that drop to ~80MB/s and at 24 ~60MB/s. I would expect that with a distributed parity and matched AG's, the performance should scale with the # of spindles, or be worse at small spindle counts, but this array is doing the opposite. What am I missing ? Should Raid-5 performance scale with # of spindles ? • Mini-ITX board for AM3 Athlon X4 600e processor.

  Hello, I am planning to build a PC to control a robotic platform that I am building (about 50% complete). I need more power than ATOM platform could bring, as the robot will need to do on the fly image processing to work as intended. I was considering using Athlon X4 600e as it is rated 45W Maximum output. Probably underclocked it would go lower than 30-35W. I do not I'am at very long battery life, but the 17Ah, 12V battery should keep it running for few hours. My problem is: motherboard. I am space limited so I am looking for a nice mini-itx AM3 motherboard to match the processor. It is hard to find many tests about power usage of the motherboards itself (for example, when using the same processor on different motherboards, test are usualy done in the opposite matter). Could you provide any motherboard examples or suggest what chipset to look for? Thank you in advance.

  Im thinking of replacing my HP Pavilion dv5-1004nr with Acer Aspire AS5738-6444, I'm a CS student... so im torn between screen size (liking the 15in and decent gpu.. but it weight nearly 8 pounds and battery can barely last 2 hours in power saver mode) and wanting something portable to carry to classes/take notes ect (3 pounds and up to 8 hour battery life of the acer) what would you guys suggest? acer any good? i love my hp keyboard.. (or have links to other good laptops, im aiming for 600$ range?)

• Hard drive failure during a move

  So, odd situation here... I shipped a computer via UPS. The computer was well protected, wrapped in multiple layers of padding and tightly packed to minimize any chance of damage. The package arrived in great condition, no damage to the box at all - it looks like it was handled with utmost care. (And given it was shipped 2nd day express and cost $200 to ship, it had better have been) However, upon unpacking it and turning it on... suddenly the computer is telling us there is no boot device. I've checked everything I can think of and everything points to complete and utter hard drive failure. So - what on earth could cause hard drive failure during shipping?

  I have an external HDD which I would like to "safely remove". Unfortunately, my system (Windows 7 x64) complains that "the device is currently in use". Using Process Explorer I discovered which process is holding a handle on the device: Obviously, System is not a process that I can just kill and be done with it. I've done a bit of research and this seems to be a common problem, but no solution has been found so far (except for rebooting the machine, which I'd like to avoid if possible). Is there any solution to this problem that I've missed?

• Fixing sticky keys without removing the keys?

  Hello, we had an E-Machine netbook brought in today that has sticky keys. (don't ask me why we said we'd fix it) Well, I've looked at a few howtos for fixing it, but they all require removing the keys. When I tried to remove the keys, I got the key to like a 45 degree angle and it still didn't budge, so I'm pretty sure the keys are non-removable. Is it common for places to even be able to find a replacement keyboard for netbooks and is there a way to fix sticky keys without removing the keys?

• Do superuser's prefer business grade or consumer grade PCs?

  Having burned through a number of consumer grade laptops in recent years, I'm wondering if the additional cost of a business grade computer is a worth while investment. I'm considering getting a laptop with slightly lower specs to justify the added cost. The primary benefits I see are: (i) the notebook will be more reliable, (ii) have a longer life and (iii) the warranty (parts and labor) will be 3 years instead of 1 year. Are there any other considerations one should keep in mind when shopping for a business grade PC? • Why does my DVD drive spin up every minute or so, spin down, and repeat (new Dell Studio 15 with Win

  We have just got a new Dell Studio 15 laptop running Windows 7 home premium with slot load DVD drive. If there is a DVD drive in the drive, every minute or so, the drive will spin up, make a couple of noises like it is reading something and then spin down. I think this is ruining battery life. There is no software running that is obviously accessing the drive. Any ideas to what it could be? Are there any tools I could use to try and identify the problem? Thanks.

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• Idling CPU at 65C, re-place or re-paste?

  Replaced Graphics card because screen would go black at a certain temp while gaming, but sound would stay on (but locked up). Then with replacement card whole PC shuts off during gaming now because the CPU is overheating. Note: CPU is only supposed to go up to 71C max according to manufacturer and it goes well over upon load. System Temp: 30C TL;DR: Idling CPU at 65C, started to shut down due to overheating, re-place (CPU, or CPU and Motherboard) or re-paste?

It says there is Linux support. However, I want to make sure there are open source drivers included with the Linux kernel. Does anyone know what the chipset for this adapter is? • Computer has video artifacts after been exposed to rain

  My desktop now displays video artifacts after been exposed to rain. Only a very small amount of moisture went inside the case. The only place I noticed any water was on the CPU socket. I used a hair dryer and paper towels to wick any remaining moisture. When I boot the PC it loads it the OS, but there are large numbers of video artifacts. The artifacts appear symmetric if that helps. I am wondering what components I need to replace. I'd like to salvage what I can. • Intel D2500HN Atom D2500 Doesn't turn on

  I recently bought parts from Amazon to build an embedded PC, and have assembled everything. I have: Intel D2500HN Mini-ITX Motherboard Mini-Box Pico-PSU 80 M350 Universal Min-ITX Enclosure 2GB DDR3 Memory Kinamax AD-LCD12 LCD Monitors 12V 6A 72W AC Adapter Power Supply The motherboard gets a light (on the motherboard, not on the Pico-PSU) when I plug it into the power adapter. Furthermore, I see the power switch light come on when I press the power button. However, the display doesn't turn on, and it doesn't seem that the PC is actually turned on. Since I'm seeing these lights, I know that the motherboard is getting power. Furthermore, the display VGA port is embedded into the motherboard, so that's not the issue. I'm just trying to figure out what COULD be the issue aside from a faulty motherboard. I have a diagram of the D2500HN motherboard which labels everything, and have ensured that the power LED as well as the On/Off cables are plugged into the right spots, although to be sure I've tried flipping these two cables around, and also plugging 1 cable into the other cable's spot & vice-versa. Is there anything else you folks think I may be missing, or anything else I can do to try to troubleshoot this issue before sending the motherboard back?

• Laptop screen brightness stuck

  I can no longer adjust the brightness of my laptop screen, it's stuck at the lowest. In Linux, the brightness adjustment keys (Fn + F4/F5) still work, since a brightness popup shows and the meter bar changes, but it does this in a strange way. Starting at 100%, each successive press of the "lower brightness" button moves the bar to: 67% 50% 0% 26% 12% Or another random pattern like that. The problem is not Linux however, since I can't change the brightness from Windows (7) either. Where do I even begin to look? Since the problem does not seem be OS-specific, I've searched in the BIOS, but it has no option like that. How did this happen? I think it's been this way since when I lowered the brightness to 0%, then pressed the "lower brightness" key again. Not sure about that though.

• Building a Media Center PC with Comcast Cable...?

  Alright - so this might be a stupid question but I've never been all that much into TV. I currently have Comcast cable. I've just got the 'basic' 2-60 package or whatever; I've just always plugged the cable into the back of my TV. I've never had a cable box. Recently, Comcast has been pulling channels off of my line-up. Most recently, the stole the TV Guide channel from me. I'm told this is part of a push to get customers to switch to their digital line-up. But, I'm also told it requires some sort of digital receiver for each TV you've got. I don't want to buy a bunch of these digital receivers and I don't want to pay the monthly rental fee...but I have heard of how awesome media center PCs are and some really cool things they can do. And, I've got loads of PC parts sitting around. So, can someone guide me through this a bit? Are there computer video cards or TV tuners that are going to work with Comcast's digital cable? What kind of price range are we looking at?
