• Traffic fall after a server problem

  I have a website from which I analyse the traffic with Google analytics. Day after day the traffic (mainly from Google SE) incresed until I get a problem with my server. For one day the server has been offline and after that I have no longer had as much users as I had before. Now it's like the site is no more referenced on Google index (but when I type "site:mysite.com", I still have all the results). Do you know if this is a normal behaviour and if the traffic will come back as before (the server has had problems two days ago) ?

  I'm kind of stuck at this part and was hoping that I'd get some assistance. I'm building a highscores page in PHP, that's going great, it works. However, I dislike the idea of index.php?skill=name and therefore wanted a bit of SEO in this. I have successfully replaced the url with a more friendly version: highscores/skill/name And this is where the problem starts, I have added pagination to the highscores and the page is read from the HTTP_GET page variable ($_GET['page']). I dislike the idea of highscores/skill/name&page=2 and was hoping if you guys could assist me to make the url like the following: Page 1, so accessing the file without declaring the page number: DOMAIN.TLD/highscores/skill/name Page 1 so now the page variable is needed: DOMAIN.TLD/highscores/skill/name/2 As you can tell the "2" will define page 2 and load the correct data for page 2. However, I'm having much trouble in my .htaccess file to configure it this way. RewriteRule ^highscores\/skill\/(.*?)(\/(.*?)*)$ highscores/skills.php?skill=$1&page=$2 [L] # Skills page That is my latest attempt in order to get it to work, unfortunately it does not work, it makes the page look horrible (CSS doesn't work) and it doesn't go to the page specified on the URL.

I have manages to redo the website with custom codes (php/mysql), but it still some visitors still complain that their AV blocks them from viewing the website. I have also cleared the former database and anything related to it, contents and the likes. My website is here I have looked for malwares in Google Webmaster but it says there are non Also I checked with Google Safe Browsing Please what could the problem be.

I am starting to think about how the accompanying website will be hosted and would greatly appreciate some advice. Requirements: Domain #1 Information about the project itself (just pages and pictures). Documentation / Wiki Forums Download of project source (approx 3MB archive) Download of various themes and community contributed content (est. sizes 10KB ~ 512KB). Domain #2 Primary company website that offers products and services. This will be primarily pictures and pages. What kind of web hosting would be best for a project like this. I am working on a very tight budget and can only afford to spend up to £250 per year for hosting this. I was considering using some sort of VPS hosting.   I am using WordPress for managing my blog sort of website, and I am using an Ad Injection plugin to place my ads where I want in a post. Plugin seems very good but I saw some ads which were not from ads networks which I was using. • force users to activate account before using service?

  i am not sure if this is the correct SE site to post this, but ill go on... So at the moment i force my users to activate their account upon registration if they want to sign in. I see some decent sites let their users sign in and use their features even their account is not activated and just show a message on top of the page letting them know that their account is not yet activated and that you need to activate it. So which practice is best? Should i stick with that i have or change it?

  There is something I don't understand in Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) for my Wordpress site. In menu "Blocked URLs", it mention that my robots.txt has never been downloaded but there are some blocked URLs. It's kind of weird and not logical. Am i missing something? • How do i make/setup a mailing list?

  I know i could program it myself but maybe there is a simple (thats the keyword) package. I like to add a box, snippet, form or page to my site for users to input their email address. Then i'd like it to automatically send email saying you have successfully subscribe. I'd want an unsubscribe link and i would be using smtp on google apps. I would like to send email with html so i can have a simple sentence with a complex link such as this I dont know if i'll get marked as spam if i try to send everyone an email at once? so i'd like the software to manage it. Also i'd like to get the emails in a simple format like csv. Is there a simple app that does this? if not i can write a simple form which does a simple insert (or delete when unsubscribing) and write a 200-300line app to send my emails out for me.

Lately, I've noticed the whole discussion is happening on Facebook, with comments there being way bigger in numbers than on my page. I notice FB has a Social Comments plugin. • Google Webmaster Tools Index Status is 0 but sitemap URL shows indexed

  I've added my site to Google Webmaster tools www.medexpress.co.uk. The site was submitted a few weeks ago. The index status shows 0 but it shows 6 URLs have been indexed in the sitemaps section. If I search in google I can see that the site is indexed and several pages appear: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site%3Awww.medexpress.co.uk&oq=site%3Awww.medexpress.co.uk&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 My question is why is the index status 0 when the sitemap section shows several indexed pages and also the pages appear in the search engine.

• Attach a Wordpress.org blog to my BigCommerce Store as a sub-domain

  I am stuck in a peculiar situation. I have a store on BigCommerce configured with a domain from GoDaddy (mystore.com). I recently created a custom wordpress blog and hosted it on 1and1 hosting (s418783372.onlinehome.us), since bigcommerce can't host Wordpress. Now, I want to use it from a sub-domain of my main-bigcommerece store (models.mystore.com), but it doesn't seem to be working since BigCommerce is the Domain Manager, but GoDaddy is the Domain-Registrar and 1and1 is the host so it doesn't control the domain. I have tried setting up a CNAME record on BigCommerece and when it didn't work asked BigCommerece about it, but they said they can't do anything about it since they aren't the domain registrar and gave me a message saying: The responsiblity to show the name in the browser on the site is up to the server or site admin. The Cname can only get the browser there UPDATE: I succeeded in setting up a CNAME on BigCommerce poinitng to the site at 1and1, but for some-reason, all it gives me is a 404-Not-Found error. I was thinking this is due to a restriction on 1and1, any idea on how to overcome that? Not Found The requested URL / was not found on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. I tried adding a domain on the 1and1 control panel (http://faq.1and1.co.uk/domains/domain_xfers/dns_transfer/4.html), pointing to models.mystore.com, but it isn't letting me add a Sub-Domain, there... UPDATE: I added mystore.com as an external domain and them added models.mystore.com as a sub-domain on the 1and1 hosting Domains panel. And it works :) Thank you all

• Password-free logins using your email address only?

  The state of logins is horrendous. With each site having it's own rules for passwords, it can be very hard to remember what variation you used on any given site. Logins are pure pain. One thing I love about Craigslist is that it did away with logins altogether. I know this design may not suit every site, but there's something to their design that beckons to be repeated. OpenID is great on sites that have adopted it, but it's still not standard. Would it be feasible/wise to use an email address as a login and provide no password? The site would send a short-term key directly to your email address. You click on the link and you're in. When you're done, you "logout" and your key is terminated. I've toyed with this idea before. What concerns (i.e. spammers, bots, etc.) would make this impractical or unsafe and could they be overcome?

• DNS hijack - prevention tips

  Hi there, Over the weekend it looks like the DNS was hijacked on two of my domains. My set up is I have the sites registered on 1and1.co.uk, with dns nameservers pointing to Hostgator in the US where the sites are hosted. I also had cloudflare CDN running on the sites (via hostgator cpanel). My question is any ideas as to how this happened, and how I could either monitor it so I know if it occurs again, or strengthen the set up/service to minimise the risk. History: I received a ping from my site monitoring service that the sites were down. When I checked the sites were up so I assumed it was local to the monitoring service I received a ping last night the sites were up When I checked, one site was redirecting to download-manual.com (and checking that URL now, the home page is not the same as the one I saw, so they too may have been hijacked/hacked) The other site URL remained the same but had one of those standard site search pages which bounce you off to either phishing or paid for search sites I notified Hostgator who told me Cloudflare or 1and1 were the issue. I removed cloudflare, and contacted both them and hostgator, and am awaiting a response, but am not holding my breath. Is this common? I've never heard of this or come across this before. It's pretty scary that this can happen so easily. Appreciate any input. **Update: I've now spoken to support at 1and1, Hostgator, and Cloudflare, and each one claims it has nothing to do with them, and must be one of the others. Larry, curly, moe.

  On my web site there is a (self-coded) search functionality that searches through the web site's specific contents. However I'd like to display one banner in addition to the site's results, showing ads relevant to the entered search terms. Can I do this e.g. with Google Ads? I want the ads to be based only on the search terms from the user, not the rest of the site's content, so there has to be a possibility to pass these search terms to the ad provider and get a banner based on these search terms.

• Rich text format area size in SDL Tridion 2011 SP1

  I've set a schema field to height 2 and see the following for the input area in Chrome and IE. I'm expecting to have text area that's 2 lines high based on the default text size. I removed the source view option, thinking the tab might affect the size, but it still appears to be about 5 lines in height instead of 2. It seems to match 2 lines if the text is set to a large font or to a heading. I'd like to minimize the size these fields take in the content entry form as well as hint that authors should enter a smaller amount of text. How do I make this match the expected 2 lines?

  I have a multi-language site for English and Chinese (Hong Kong). My previous setting for Chinese Hong Kong (zh-hk) had: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="zh-hk" xml:lang="zh-hk"> Shortly, I began to notice browser with other Chinese language sub-codes like zh-tw and zh-cn were seeing my English site in search engines instead of Chinese Hong Kong (zh-hk), which makes sense. I want to change my html lang to: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="zh" xml:lang="zh"> Would this cover all Chinese language settings? Also, would Google prefer to show pages that match language subcodes of the browser/country (zh-hk for Hong Kong, zh-cn for Taiwan) than a general language code (zh)?

  I am trying to get an API that I can use to do searches on my own site. Google has something called site search and something called custom search. What is the difference? I make a new site search, then it is listed on a page with "custom search" in the heading. This is really confusing. I just want an API that I can use to search my site. I would prefer json to xml as the results. And if this service is offered by someone other than Google, that is fine too. The ones that I create at Google want me to embed a premade search box into my site. I do not want that, I want an API that I can call from PHP or JS. How can I get this?

  here is my scenario i have a website where i redirect my users basing upon the device they were using, lets say a user is visiting from an iPad, i take him directly to the page of iPad wallpapers, the user selects iPad version & i take the user to the gallery of wallpapers where the user can select & download any wallpaper. Every wallpaper is the required resolution, i have my reasons for doing this, now the thing is there are diff. resolution. versions of an image appearing one 5 diff. sections of my website, each having their own view page Now there is only one record in db.table for the image, and basing on the my consistent naming convention of the images, i pick the required image. this means when 5 different pages are generated in 5 categorized sections of the website, due to a shared DB record, the keywords, the titles and every single detail of the 5 pages is same besides the resolution of the image, and the section specific details that the page has and yeah the pages also have different paths like wallpapers.com\ipad-1\cars\Ferrari-dino.html wallpapers.com\ipad-2\cars\Ferrari-dino.html wallpapers.com\ipad-3\cars\Ferrari-dino.html wallpapers.com\ipad-4\cars\Ferrari-dino.html wallpapers.com\ipad-5\cars\Ferrari-dino.html now this is my scenario, How do Search Engines see it and how do they rank it?   In case a person has many different social network profiles, what is the proper way of referring to those profiles in a work that is meant to be printed or may be viewed as an image? For example one owns the username "CoolCompany" on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and other websites. Should they provide a URL for each profile? for example: Facebook.com/CoolCompany Twitter.com/CoolCompany ... I often notice that in videos or on TV people may only use the logos but I believe it is not very useful, specially in case that the audience are unfamiliar with a social network... • Country specific SEO

  I have a wordpress site which is located at a .com address. The site is a simple 4 page personal site with my academic credentials, publications and a health blog that I started. I have done quite a bit of seo and I rank pretty high for the keywords i want on google.co.uk. However, I do not rank at all on google.com.mt which is the Malta specific search. I have therefore just bought the .com.mt domain and pointed the DNS nameservers to my current host provider and redirected it to the .com address. My goal is to make sure I don't screw up my google.co.uk search ranking, while starting to rank on google.com.mt I'm I doing the right thing or do you have any suggestions??
