  When you work on the same project for a relative long time you get more experienced. You may also master many new technologies. Besides the coding you may also do what would classify other roles. There is however one part of your career that may not get updated. That is your job title. It seems beside all technological hypes there is also job title hype. It all depends on which company you work for. Many companies give employer better job titles because they want to keep them. The employee doesn’t change their job because the current title is much better, even if they would get better working condition and benefits if they changed their job. When you consider changing you job you notice that your job title is kind of “outdated”. People with less skill have a much better title for their job than you. You may very well explain what you did on your project but the fact is that many employers go by the title. So here are the questions: Do you change your current title in your CV? • Build & Install Ruby Gems with Rake

  Are you using rake to build your gems?  Have you ever wished there were an install task to install it to your machine?  I, for one, have written something like this a few times: 1: desc 'Install the gem' 2: task :install do 3: exec 'gem install pkg/goodies-0.1.gem' 4: end 5:  That is pretty straightforward.  However, this will not work under JRuby on Mac where the command should be ‘jgem’.  So we can enhance it to detect the platform, and host OS: 1: desc 'Install the gem' 2: task :install do 3: executable = RUBY_PLATFORM[/java/] && Config::CONFIG[/darwin/] ? 'jgem' : 'gem' 4: exec "#{executable} install pkg/goodies-0.1.gem" 5: end This is a little better.  I am still not comfortable with the sloppiness of building a shell command and executing it though.  It is possible to do it with strictly Ruby.  I am also going namespace it to integrate better with the GemPackageTask.  Now it will be accessed via ‘rake gem:install’ 1: desc 'Install the gem' 2: namespace 'gem' do 3: task :install do 4: Gem::Installer.new('pkg/goodies-0.1.gem').install 5: end 6: end   I have included this in the goodies gem 0.2, so go ahead and install it!  ‘gem install goodies’

  For Brief I am a recently graduated CS student. I am looking for a job these days, but I have no idea what kind of software development jobs I like(embedded system,web development or else...). And I am looking for your advice. Here is a little more While I was a student, I had an one year internship experience as a system engineer in a semi-conductor company where I wrote Linux driver, tuned system performance, etc.. I was happy about this experience as it allowed me to deepen my understanding of the operating system and different low level things. And I thought "Em, I will continue in the embedded area after I graduate". At the end of my study, I am doing an another internship in web development, both front-end and back-end. And I also enjoys a lot the process of learning new things and making it work (Backbone, Node, socketio, etc..). Now, when I am looking for a software development position, I do not know what to apply! All I know is that I want a job which allows me to keep up with the trends instead of repeating. But besides this, I've no idea what specific type of job I want to do. Turn back to embedded system? Continue with web development? Change to other promising areas(data mining)? All these development positions makes no big difference to me. But I think this is not good and I need some criteria at choosing. So I am looking for advice and I would really appreciate if you can share your experience.

• I have finally traded my Blackberry in for a Droid!

  Over the years I have used a number of different types of phones. Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia, and now Android. Until the Blackberry, which was my last phone (and I still have one issued from my office) I had never found a phone that “just worked” especially with email and messaging. The Blackberry did, and does, excel at those functions. My last personal phone was a Storm 1 which was Blackberry’s first touch screen phone. The Storm 2 was an improved version that fixed some screen press detection issues from the first model and it added Wifi. Over the last few years I have watched others acquire and fall in love with their ‘Droid’s including a number of iPhone users which surprised me. Our office has until recently only supported Blackberry phones, adding iPhones within the last year or so. When I spoke with our internal telecom folks they confirmed they were evaluating Android phones, but felt they still were not secure enough out of the box for corporate use and SOX compliance. That being said, as a personal phone, the Droid Rocks! I am impressed with its speed, the number of apps available, and the overall design. It is not as “flashy” as an iPhone but it does everything that I care about and more. The model I bought is the Motorola Droid 2 Global from Verizon. It is currently running Android 2.2 for it’s OS, 2.3 is just around the corner. It has 8 gigs of internal flash memory and can handle up to a 32 gig SDCard. (I currently have 2 8 gig cards, one for backups, and have ordered a 16 gig card!) Being a geek at heart, I “rooted” the phone which means gained superuser access to the OS on the phone. And opens a number of doors for further modifications down the road. Also being a geek meant I have already setup a development environment and built and deployed the obligatory “Hello Droid” application.   As part of the Tuxedo 11gR1 release, I've written two new white papers on Tuxedo. One is called "Tuxedo in a SOA World" and discusses how Tuxedo fits into SOA based applications. It covers most of the various connectivity options from Tuxedo into SOA environments and gives guidance as to which connectivity options are best suited for a particular application requirement. The other white paper "SCA: Bringing Modern SOA Programing to Tuxedo" is of a more technical bent and focuses on using the SCA features in SALT to easily build SOA based applications on Tuxedo without using a lot of technical APIs. In fact, services built using SALT's SCA support don't require any technical APIs, just pure business logic, and SCA clients need at most a couple of API calls, simply to look up a service. • Introducing AutoVue Document Print Service

  We recently announced the availability of our new AutoVue Document Print Service products. For more information, please read the article entitled Print Any Document Type with AutoVue Document Print Services that was posted on our blog. The AutoVue Document Print Service products help address a trivial, yet very common challenge: printing and batch printing documents. The AutoVue Document Print Service is a Web-Services based interface, which allows developers to complement their print server solutions by leveraging AutoVue's printing capabilities within broader enterprise applications like Asset Lifecycle Management, Product Lifecycle Management, Enterprise Content Management solutions, etc. This means that you can leverage the AutoVue Document Print Service products as part of your printing solution to automate the printing of virtually any document type required in any business process. Clients that consume AutoVue's Document Print Service can be written in any language (for example Java or .NET) as long as they understand Web Services Description Language (WSDL) and communicate using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP). The print solution consists of three main components, as described in the diagram below: a print server (not included in the AutoVue Document Print Service offering) that will interact with your application to identify the files that need to be printed, the printer to send each file, as well as the print options needed for each file (paper size, page orientation, etc), and collate the print job requests. The print server will also take care of calling the AutoVue Document Print Service to perform the actual printing. The AutoVue Document Print Services send files to a printer for printing. The AutoVue Document Print Service products leverage AutoVue's format- and platform agnostic technology to let you print/batch virtually any type of files, without requiring the authoring application installed on your machine. and Printers As shown above, you can trigger printing from your application either programmatically through automated business processes or manually through human interaction. If documents that need to be printed from your application are stored inside a content repository/Document Management System (DMS) such as Oracle Universal Content Management System (UCM), then the Print Server will need to identify the list of documents and pass the ID of each document to the AutoVue DPS to print. In this case, AutoVue DPS leverages the AutoVue VueLink integration (note: AutoVue VueLink integrations are pre-packaged AutoVue integrations with most common enterprise systems. Check our Website for more information on the subject) to fetch documents out of the document management system for printing. In lieu of the AutoVue VueLink integration, you can also leverage the AutoVue Integration Software Development Kit (iSDK) to build your own connector. If the documents you need to print from your application are not stored in a content management system, the Print Server will need to ensure that files are made available to the AutoVue Document Print Service. The Print Server could for example fetch the files out of your application or an extension to the application could be developed to fetch the files and make them available to the AutoVue DPS. • Some New .NET Toys (Repost)

  Last week I was fortunate enough to spend time in Redmond on Microsoft’s campus for the 2011 Microsoft MVP Summit. It was great to hang out with a number of old friends and get the opportunity to talk tech with the various product teams up at Microsoft. The weather wasn’t exactly sunny but Microsoft always does a great job with the Summit and everyone had a blast (heck, I even got to run the bases at SafeCo field) While much of what we saw is covered under NDA, there a ton of great things in the pipeline from Microsoft and many things that are already available (or just became so) that I wasn’t necessarily aware of. The purpose of this post is to share some of the info I learned on resources and tools available to .NET developers today. Please let me know if you have any questions (or if you know of something else cool which might benefit others). Enjoy! Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Microsoft has issued the RTM release of Visual Studio 2010 SP1. You can download the full SP1 on MSDN as of today (March 10th to the general public) and take advantage of such things as: Silverlight 4 is included in the box (as opposed to a separate install) Silverlight 4 Profiling WCF RIA Services SP1 Intellitrace for 64-bit and SharePoint ASP.NET now easily supports IIS Express and SQL CE Want a description of all that’s new beyond the above biased list (which arguably only contains items I think are important)? Check out this KB article. Portable Library Tools CTP Without much fanfare Microsoft has released a CTP of a new add-in to Visual Studio 2010 which simplifies code sharing between projects targeting different runtimes (i.e. Silverlight, WPF, Win7 Phone, XBox). With this Add-In installed you can add a new project of type “Portable Library” and specify which platforms you wish to target. Once that is done, any code added to this library will be limited to use only features which are common to all selected frameworks. Other projects can now reference this portable library and be provided assemblies custom built to their environment. This greatly simplifies the current process of sharing linked files between platforms like WPF and Silverlight. You can find out more about this CTP and how it works on this great blog post. Visual Studio Async CTP Microsoft has also released a CTP of a set of language and framework enhancements to provide a much more powerful asynchronous programming model. Due to the focus on async programming in all types of platforms (and it being the ONLY option in Silverlight and Win7 phone) a move towards a simpler and more understandable model is always a good thing. This CTP (called Visual Studio Async CTP) can be downloaded here. You can read more about this CTP on this blog post. MSDN Code Samples Gallery Microsoft has also launched new code samples gallery on their MSDN site: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/. This site allows you to easily search for small samples of code related to a particular technology or platform. If a sample of code you are looking for is not found, you can request one via the site and other developers can see your request and provide a sample to the site to suit your needs. You can also peruse requested samples and, if you find a scenario where you can provide value, upload your own sample for the benefit of others. Samples are packaged into the VS .vsix format and include any necessary references/dependencies. By using .vsix as the deployment mechanism, as samples are installed from the site they are kept in your Visual Studio 2010 Samples Gallery and kept for your future reference. If you get a chance, check out the site and see how it is done. Although a somewhat simple concept, I was very impressed with their implementation and the way they went about trying to suit a need. I’ll definitely be looking there in the future as need something or want to share something. MSDN Search Capabilities Another item I learned recently and was not aware of (that might seem trivial to some) is the power of the MSDN site’s search capabilities. Between the Code Samples Gallery described above and the search enhancements on MSDN, Microsoft is definitely investing in their platform to help provide developers of all skill levels the tools and resources they need to be successful. What do I mean by the MSDN search capability and why should you care? If you go to the MSDN home page (http://msdn.microsoft.com) and use the “Search MSDN with Big” box at the very top of the page you will see some very interesting results. First, the search actually doesn’t just search the MSDN library it searches: MSDN Library All Microsoft Blogs CodePlex StackOverflow Downloads MSDN Magazine Support Knowledgebase (I’m not sure it even ends there but the above are all I know of) Beyond just searching all the above locations, the results are formatted very nicely to give some contextual information based on where the result came from. For example, if a keyword search returned results from CodePlex, each row in the search results screen would include a large amount of information specific to CodePlex such as: Looking at the above results immediately tells you everything from the page views to the CodePlex ratings. All in all, knowing that this much information is indexed and available from a single search location will lead me to utilize this as one of my initial searches for development information.

• UPK 3.6.1 New Feature - Publish Presentation

  UPK includes numerous options for deploying the content you have created. Most UPK users are familiar with the UPK Player and the various document outputs that have been available as publishing formats for some time now. In addition UPK provides the content developer the ability to publish content for use in specific environments, LMS, Test Director are two examples. UPK 3.6.1 adds the Presentation publishing type. The Presentation publishing type produces a slideshow presentation of screenshots and text of each topic as a separate Microsoft PowerPoint file. To publish to the presentation option just select the type under the documents category in the publishing wizard. The Presentation publishing type feature came from a customer request and given the ever growing methods and channels for communication we'd like to know what other output types or methods of using existing outputs you would like to see in a future release of UPK.

  Possible Duplicate: migrating PR / rankings from one site to another Ive been writing a blog for the past yr or so, with about 300 published articles, the blog have been running under a subdomain blog.mysite.com We are no looking to change the url of our site, so the blog is going to have to be ported over to a subdoamin on the new site. We would really like to keep the backlog / archive of all the articles we have written but dont wont to be penalized for having duplicate content, could we just remove / unindex the urls from google in webmaster tools then export the blog and import it back to our new blog ? Would google still see this a duplicate content or becuase ive removed the urls have they no longer got a copy of it ? thanks

• Tip: Replacing Html.Encode Calls With New Html Encoding Syntax
