  • Is it faster to loop through a Python set of number or a set of letters?

    - by Scott Bartell
Is it faster to loop through a Python set of numbers or a Python set of letters given that each set is the exact same length and each item within each set is the same length? Why? I would think that there would be a difference because letters have more possible characters [a-zA-Z] than numbers [0-9] and therefor would be more 'random' and likely affect the hashing to some extent. numbers = set([00000,00001,00002,00003,00004,00005, ... 99999]) letters = set(['aaaaa','aaaab','aaaac','aaaad', ... 'aaabZZ']) # this is just an example, it does not actually end here for item in numbers: do_something() for item in letters: do_something() where len(numbers) == len(letters) Update: I am interested in Python's specific hashing algorithm and what happens behind the scenes with this implementation.

  • What's a good way to write batch scripts in C#?

    - by Scott Bilas
I would like to write simple scripts in C#. Stuff I would normally use .bat or 4NT .btm files for. Copying files, parsing text, asking user input, and so on. Fairly simple but doing this stuff right in a batch file is really hard (no exceptions for example). I'm familiar with command line "scripting" wrappers like AxScript so that gets me part of the way there. What I'm missing is the easy file-manipulation framework. I want to be able to do cd(".."), copy(srcFile, destFile) type functionality. Tools I have tried: NANT, which we use in our build process. Not a good scripting tool. Insanely verbose XML syntax and to add a simple function you must write an extension assembly. Can't do it inline. PowerShell. Looks great, but I just haven't been able to switch over to this as my primary shell. Too many differences from 4NT. Whatever I do needs to run from an ordinary command prompt and not require a special shell to run it through. Can PowerShell be used as a script executor? Perl/Python/Ruby. Really hate learning an entirely new language and framework just to do batch file operations. Haven't been able to dedicate the time I need to do this. Plus, we're a 99% .NET shop for our toolchain and I really want to leverage our existing experience and codebase. Are there frameworks out there that are trying to solve this problem of "make a batch file in C#" that you have used? I want the power of C#/.NET with the immediate-mode type functionality of a typical cmd.exe shell language. Am I alone in wanting something like this?

  • What is the easiest straightforward way of telling which version performs better?

    - by Peter Perhác
I have an application, which I have re-factored so that I believe it is now faster. One can't possibly feel the difference, but in theory, the application should run faster. Normally I would not care, but as this is part of my project for my master's degree, I would like to support my claim that the re-factoring did not only lead to improved design and 'higher quality', but also an increase in performance of the application (a small toy-thing - a train set simulation). I have toyed with the latest VisualVM thing today for about four hours but I couldn't get anything helpful out of it. There isn't (or I haven't found it) a way to simply compare the profiling results taken from the two versions (pre- and post- refactoring). What would be the easiest, the most straightforward way of simply telling the slower from the faster version of the application. The difference of the two must have had an impact on the performance. Thank you.

  • Could someone explain __declspec(naked) please?

    - by Scott
    I'm looking into porting a script engine written for Windows to Linux; it's for Winamp's visualization platform AVS. I'm not sure if it's even possible at the moment. From what I can tell the code is taking the addresses of the C functions nseel_asm_atan and nseel_asm_atan_end and storing them inside a table that it can reference during code execution. I've looked at MS's documentation, but I'm unsure what __declspec(naked) really does. What is prolog and epilog code mentioned in the documentation? Is that related to Windows calling conventions? Is this portable? Know of any Linux-based examples using similar techniques? static double (*__atan)(double) = &atan; __declspec ( naked ) void nseel_asm_atan(void) { FUNC1_ENTER *__nextBlock = __atan(*parm_a); FUNC_LEAVE } __declspec ( naked ) void nseel_asm_atan_end(void) {}

  • Using Django.test.client to check template vars

    - by scott
I've got a view that I'm trying to test with the Client object. Can I get to the variables I injected into the render_to_response of my view? Example View: def myView(request): if request.method == "POST": # do the search return render_to_response('search.html',{'results':results},context_instance=RequestContext(request)) else: return render_to_response('search.html',context_instance=RequestContext(request) Test: c = Client() response = c.post('/school/search/', {'keyword':'beagles'}) # how do I get to the 'results' variable??

  • What to use to wait on a indeterminate number of tasks?

    - by Scott Chamberlain
I am still fairly new to parallel computing so I am not too sure which tool to use for the job. I have a System.Threading.Tasks.Task that needs to wait for n number number of tasks to finish before starting. The tricky part is some of its dependencies may start after this task starts (You are guaranteed to never hit 0 dependent tasks until they are all done). Here is kind of what is happening Parent thread creates somewhere between 1 and (NUMBER_OF_CPU_CORES - 1) tasks. Parent thread creates task to be run when all of the worker tasks are finished. Parent thread creates a monitoring thread Monitoring thread may kill a worker task or spawn a new task depending on load. I can figure out everything up to step 4. How do I get the task from step 2 to wait to run until any new worker threads created in step 4 finish?

  • How to add a Tooltip to a "td" with jquery?

    - by Scott
I need to add a tooltip/alt to a "td" element inside of my tables with jquery. Can someone help me out? I tried: var tTip ="Hello world"; $(this).attr("onmouseover", tip(tTip)); where I have verified that I am using the "td" as "this". Edit:I am able to capture the "td" element through using the "alert" command and it worked. So for some reason the "tip" function doesn't work. Anyone know why this would be?

  • How can I get Weblogic to connect to a RedBrick database?

    - by Scott
I am trying to get Weblogic 9.2.3 to talk to a legacy RedBrick database and am having trouble. I have the redbrick.jar file from the software installation and have added to my APP_RUNTIME_CLASSPATH and my MANIFEST_CLASSPATH. This is my jConnect template line: <url>jdbc:rbw:protocol:${DB_LT_SERVER}:${DB_LT_PORT}/${DB_LT_NAME}</url> <driver-name>redbrick.jdbc.RBWDriver</driver-name> (Variables get replaced with good values during build.) When starting up I get this error: weblogic.common.ResourceException: Unknown Data Source jConnectLT weblogic.common.resourcepool.ResourceSystemException: Cannot load driver class: redbrick.jdbc.RBWDriver Do I have to do more to make Weblogic see the RedBrick database? Thanks for any tips or pointers.

  • Simulate stochastic bipartite network based on trait values of species - in R

    - by Scott Chamberlain
I would like to create bipartite networks in R. For example, if you have a data.frame of two types of species (that can only interact across species, not within species), and each species has a trait value (e.g., size of mouth in the predator allows who gets to eat which prey species), how do we simulate a network based on the traits of the species (that is, two species can only interact if their traits overlap in values for instance)? UPDATE: Here is a minimal example of what I am trying to do. 1) create phylogenetic tree; 2) simulate traits on the phylogeny; 3) create networks based on species trait values. # packages install.packages(c("ape","phytools")) library(ape); library(phytools) # Make phylogenetic trees tree_predator <- rcoal(10) tree_prey <- rcoal(10) # Simulate traits on each tree trait_predator <- fastBM(tree_predator) trait_prey <- fastBM(tree_prey) # Create network of predator and prey ## This is the part I can't do yet. I want to create bipartite networks, where ## predator and prey interact based on certain crriteria. For example, predator ## species A and prey species B only interact if their body size ratio is ## greater than X.

  • How to deal with multiple Facebook requests simultaneously

    - by Peter Warbo
I'm using the Facebook SDK for my app. I have created a singleton class FacebookHelper to deal with all Facebook related logic. Whenever I make a Facebook request (i.e download friends) I set an enum i.e FacebookRequestDownloadFriends so that FacebookHelper knows how to handle errors and success for that request (since handling can be different between the different requests) This solution has worked out fine until now, because now I'm doing 2 Facebook Requests at the same time so when I set the enum for the first request i.e FacebookRequestDownloadFriends and then it will be overwritten just shortly with another request FacebookRequestDownloadEvents, so there will be confusion obviously. How can I deal with this issue without having to refactor too much code?

  • Anyone using a web service as a data source in Excel 2007?

    - by Scott
Can I use a web service as a data soruce for Excel pivot tables? Currently, the soure data for the pivot table is being exported from the DB to a CSV file. Then the CSV file is loaded into a worksheet in the workbook. From there, a pivot table is created in the same workbook. We are looking to streamline this process. The SQL db and pivot tables are the constants. The pivot tables are generated dynamically from a public-facing website. This is not an internal app so the preference is to not connect directly to the DB.

  • How many rewrite rules should I expect to manage?

    - by Scott Ackerson
I'm dealing with a hosting team that is fairly skiddish of managing many rewrite rules. What are your experiences with the number of rules your sites are currently managing? I can see dozens (if not more) coming up as the site grows and contracts and need to set expectations that this isn't out of the norm. Thanks

  • Disable link in UIWebView in appearance and function

    - by Peter
Hello, I wish to disable the href links on a UIWebView. First, I want the look of the link to change so the user doesn't think it is clickable. Second, I want the actual link to not be able to be tapped. I do not want to try webView:shouldStartLoadWithRequest:navigationType: since that not change the appearance of my links. I found this answer: Disabling visible links in UIWebView But the above hasn't worked for me. This is my code: NSString* s=[[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"for (a in document.getElementsByTagName(\"a\")) {a.href = \"\";}"]; [myWebView stringByEvaluatingJavaScriptFromString:s]; I've been working on this for hours, any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

  • What features do you expect from a Java (Rich) Client Framework?

    - by Peter Walser
I'm intending to design (and provide a reference implementation for) a new Swing Rich Client Framework. My job and personal experience covers many project-specific Swing client frameworks as well as the Eclipse RCP, and every one of them had some original and clever concepts, but also drawbacks and rigid realizations. My plan is to incorporate the best of those concepts and features into a new framework whose core is very open and extendable. For my must-have-features list, I'm counting on your input and hope you can share some concept pearls & diamonds you've encountered in other frameworks, or features you always wanted to have or have in a better way. The framework is intended for very simple to very complex and sophisticated projects for clients that need full i18n for richt clients that execute some or all of the non-presentation logic on the server to be very lightweight to be easy to learn and use Thanks in advance for sharing your insights :)

  • Changing the cursor in WPF sometimes works, sometimes doesn't

    - by Scott
On several of my usercontrols, I change the cursor by using this.Cursor = Cursors.Wait; when I click on something. Now I want to do the same thing on a WPF page on a button click. When I hover over my button, the cursor changes to a hand, but when I click it, it doesn't change to the wait cursor. I wonder if this has something to do with the fact that it's a button, or because this is a page and not a usercontrol? This seems like weird behavior.

  • Developing for iPhone or Android?

    - by Peter Bridger
I'd like to start developing for iPhone or Android in my spare time, as a chance to learn something new but also hoping make some extra income. I'm not sure which is the best development for me to start developing on. I own an iPhone, but I don't have a Mac (which I would need to use the SDK), plus with the iPhone I believe there's an annual charge to develop for it. As far as I understand Android, the SDK is free and can be used on Windows. Professionally I develop using .net and C#, which sounds more similar to the Java based Android enviroment. Another negative I perceive against iPhone is it has a much more crowded App Store, I would think apps get better exposure on Android?

  • WPF: how to make normal listbox left-drag-select behavior use middle mouse instead?

    - by Scott Bilas
I'm building a special listbox control that our designers want customized in some tweaky ways. One thing they want to see is that the middle button-drag does what the left button-drag normally does (we are repurposing left-drag to other things). So it needs the two key features that left-drag does in a ListBox default implementation: While holding down the button and dragging, the selection starts where I click down and extends to where I drag. While dragging outside the listbox region, it scrolls if there is scrollable space in that direction. Before I go an duplicate this functionality by hand, is there any easy way to fool ListBox into thinking it's getting left-mouse drag events but instead is getting middle-mouse?

  • Silverlight Memory Usage

    - by peter
Hi All, Is there a way to measure the current memory usage of the silverlight plug-in from within the client side C# code? I am isolating a memory leak and it would be good to know the current memory usage of the plug-in. For instance it could be logged to a file before I clicked a button that it was using '60 mb' and after I clicked the button it was using '70 mb' etc. I could then gradually add in controls and use this technique to quantify the leak. Thanks.

I have two files: index.php /lib/user.php Index contains the form: <div class="<? echo $msgclass; ?>"> <? echo $msg; ?> </div> <form id="signin" action="/lib/user.php" method="post"> ... </form> User.php makes all the processing. It sets $msg to 'some error message' and $msgalert to 'error' in case of any error. At the end of processing it uses header() to redirect to index.php But after redirection $msg and $msgalert no longer persist and index only gets empty vars. How can i fix this?

  • Wordpress how to retrieve the post id once its been reset in the page

    - by Scott B
    I'm working with a script in which the postid of the page has been reset via a script include. How can I retrieve the actual true post id and reset its value once it has been changed via script? Here is the script that I'm referring to. Somewhere in there, the postid is being reset so that the page's the_content() call is no longer pulling the current page being viewed. <?php //$featpages = get_option('woo_slider_pages_landing'); $featpages = '579,584,537'; $featarr=split(",",$featpages); $featarr = array_diff($featarr, array("")); $i = 1; foreach ( $featarr as $featured_tab ) { query_posts('page_id=' . $featured_tab); while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> <div class="featured-slide" id="slide-<?php echo $i; $i++; ?>" <?php if($i >=3 ){echo 'style="display:none"';} ?>> <div class="text"> <h2><?php if ( get_post_meta($post->ID, "page_desc", $single = true) <> "" ) { echo get_post_meta($post->ID, "page_desc", $single = true); } else { the_title(); } ?></h2> <p><?php if ( get_post_meta($post->ID, "page_excerpt", $single = true) <> "" ) { echo get_post_meta($post->ID, "page_excerpt", $single = true); } else { the_excerpt(); } ?></p> <?php if ( get_post_meta($post->ID, "link_text", $single = true) <> "" and get_post_meta($post->ID, "link_link", $single = true) <> "" ) { ?> <p><a href="<?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, "link_link", $single = true); ?>" title="<?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, "link_text", $single = true); ?>"><?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, "link_text", $single = true); ?></a></p> <?php } ?> </div><!-- /.text --> <?php if ( get_post_meta($post->ID, "image", $single = true) <> "" ) { ?> <div class="image"> <img src="<?php echo get_post_meta($post->ID, "image", $single = true); ?>" alt="<?php the_title(); ?>" class="featured" /> </div><!-- /.image --> <?php } ?> </div><!-- /.featured-slide --> <?php endwhile; } //endforeach ?>

It seem like it would work but it doesn't. Any help would be appreciated!
