• GPU based procedual terrain borders?

  I'm working on a game that preferibly should feature a combination of designed and procedually generated terrain where the designer specifies in somewhat detailed terms what type of terrain a given area will have (grasslands, forest etc...) and then a precedual algorithm takes care of the rest. I'm not talking about minecraft style biomoes, but rather the game map for a strategy game. Each 'area' will not take up that much of the screen, and thus be more akin to a tile whose texture is procedually generated. While procedually generating terrain textures on the GPU are not that difficult, the hard part is making the borders between them look good. Currently, the 'tiles' are large enough to be visible (due to memory constraints mainly, we are talking planetary sized textures for a game taking place in space and on a continental ground view with seamless transitions between them) and creating good borders between them with an algorithm that is fast enough to be useful has proven difficult. Sampling the n-surrounding pixels and using the combiened result did not yield very good borders and was fairly slow on the GPU to boot (ca 12ms for me, that is without any lighning or shading and with very simple terrain texture shaders). So are there any practical known methods to solve this problem?

A big part of the product is allowing its users the ability to create queries with SQL to pull in business information from their back end databases. • How do I completly remove software? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Why are the hidden settings-folders not deleted when purging an application? Ok I have 8GB on my desktop dual booting win 7. I installed a few games, assualtcube, tremolous, and spring. But I had removed them using 'remove --purge' and only to find they are still lingering and purge does not well truly purge them. I need them completely gone and not secretly hogging space when I purged them. How can i completely remove software, like it is gone and not going to take any more of my precious space? Shrinking 7 and growing Ubuntu is not an answer I am accepting, i want to know how to completely remove software. Thank you for your time and your answers.

• Strategy for versioning on a public repo

  Suppose I'm developing a (javascript) library which is hosted on a public repo (e.g. github). My aim in terms of how version numbers are assigned and incremented is to follow the guidelines of semantic versioning. Now, there's a number of files in my project which compose the actual lib and a number of files that 'support it', the latter being docs, a test suite, etc. My perspective this far has been that version numbers should only apply to the actual lib - not the project as a whole - since the lib alone is 'the unit' that defines the public API. However I'm not satisfied with this approach as, for example, a fix in the test suite constitutes an 'improvement' in my project, which will not be reflected in the version number (or the docs which contain a reference to it). On a more practical level, various tools, such as package managers, may (understandably) not play along with this strategy. For example, when trying to publish a change which is not reflected in the version number, npm publish fails with the suggestion "Bump the 'version' field set the --force flag, or npm unpublish". Am I doing it wrong?

  This question has been asked hundreds of times before, but I did not see any relevant answer so I will repost. Sorry if there is any helpful answer, please don't vote down but please link to the question(s) with such answers. The problem can be reproduced as follows: When I remove the password of an administrator account, "Log In without Password", I cannot use that account to authenticate. When I do something that requires authentication, I cannot use an admin without a password to authenticate. If I leave the password box blank without a password while choosing a non-password admin, authentication fails (in terminal or in GUI). How to fix this problem?

• What are the factors that determine the default frequency of a shader call?

  After i have been played for some days with various vertex and fragments shaders seems clear to me that this programs are called by the GPU at every and each rendering cycle, the problem is that I can't really quantify this frequency and I can't tell if is based on some default values or not because I don't have a big collection of hardware right now to do extensive tests. For what i know the answer could be really trivial like "it's the same of the refresh rate of your monitor", but i would like some good answers on that to be clear on this. For instance looks really odd to me that all the techniques used to control the amount of FPS that i have seen until now uses a call for the OpenGL function glutGet(GLUT_ELAPSED_TIME) to retrieve a value in ms about when the rendering started but I have to relies on the CPU to do the math. Why I can't set an FPS value in OpenGL if OpenGL clearly has a counter and a timer/clock? PS I'm referring to OpenGL 3.0+

• Using HTML5 Today part 4&ndash;What happened to XHTML?

  This is the fourth entry in a series of descriptions & demos from the “Using HTML5 Today” user group presentation. For practical purposes, the original XHTML standard is a historical footnote, although XHTML transitional will probably live on forever in the default web page templates of old web page editors. The original XHTML spec was released in 2000, on the heels of the HTML 4.01 spec.  The plan was to move web development away from HTML to the more formal, rigorous approach that XHTML offered, but it was built on a principle that conflicts with the history and culture of the Internet: XHTML introduced the idea of Draconian Error Handling, which essentially means that invalid XML markup on a page will cause a page to stop rendering. There is a transitional mode offered in the original XHTML spec, but the goal was to move to D.E.H.  You can see the result by changing the doc type for a document to “application/xhtml+xml” - for my class example we change this setting in the web.config file: <staticContent> <remove fileExtension=".html" /> <mimeMap fileExtension=".html" mimeType="application/xhtml+xml" /> </staticContent> With the new strict syntax a simple error, in this case a duplicate </td> tag, can cause a critical page error: While XHTML became very popular in the ensuing decade, the Strict form of XHTML never achieved widespread use. Draconian Error Handling was one of the factors that led in time to the creation of the WHATWG, or Web Hypertext Application Technology Group.  WHATWG contributed to the eventually disbanding of the XHTML 2.0 working group and the W3C’s move to embrace the HTML5 standard. For developers who long for XML markup the W3C HTML5 standard includes an XHTML5 syntax. • Up, down, right arrow keys and delete key not working

  I have already read Delete and arrow keys not working and tried what is written there. I have also tried restarting my computer. I have also searched elsewhere for answers, but I haven't found any solution. I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and there were not problems yesterday, but for the last hour, I've had the following problem. When I press the up or the right arrow, nothing happens. When I press the down arrow, it doesn't make anything go down, but something appears in the upper right corner of my screen: http://i.imgur.com/pmnFOCD.png When I press the delete key, nothing gets deleted, but something appears in the upper right corner of my screen: http://i.imgur.com/Wu9czel.png The left arrow still works.   I'd like to activate ctrl+alt+backspace on multiple pcs (Ubuntu 14.04) using dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration I don't want to do the dialog every time so i tried: debconf-get-selections | grep "^keyboard-configuration" > config.dat on a host where i answered the dialog with the desired answers On the host where i want to do it non interactively i tried: debconf-set-selections config.dat dpkg-reconfigure -f noninteractive keyboard-configuration it ran without asking, but afterwards the selections where reset to the default values How can i get dpkg to use my predefined values? Or is there another possibility to enable the ctrl+alt+backspace for all users without going through dialogs?

• How can a Cisco Aironet wireless card connect to a WPA encrypted network?

  I have a Thinkpad T40 running Ubuntu 10.10. I want to connect to wireless networks with WPA encryption; they appear in the network list, but are grayed out. The card does support WPA, since it works in Windows. In 10.10 the wireless works just fine with unprotected and WEP networks, but cannot connect to any WPA networks. The card is a Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. I've been reading a lot of forum posts trying to find a solution, but either encounter threads where no solution was found or answers longer apply (most date from 2007, since this isn't the newest of computers). • Should I sacrifice code succintness to ensure the narrowest variable scope? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Is the usage of internal scope blocks within a function bad style? 3 answers In many languages (e.g. both Perl and Java - which are the two languages I work most with) it is possible to narrow the scope of local variables by declaring them within a block. Although it adds extra code length (the opening and closing block braces), and possibly reduces readability, should I create blocks purely to narrow the scope of variables to the statements that use the variables and to uphold the principle of narrowest scope or does this sacrifice succinctness and readability just to unnecessarily uphold an agreed 'best practice' principle? I usually declare local variables to functions/methods at the start of the function to aid readability, but I could not do this, and just create blocks throughout the function and declare the variables throughout the code - within those blocks - to narrow their scope.

• Advice on choosing a book to read

  I would like to ask for some recommendations on useful books to read. Initially I had intended on posting quite a long description of my current issue and asking for advice. But I realised that I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to ask. One thing that is clear to me is that my knowledge in various areas needs improving and reading is one method of doing that. Though choosing the right book to read seems like a task in itself when there are so many books out there. I am a programmer but I also deal with analysis, design & testing. So I am not sure what type of book to read. One option might be to work through two books at the same time. I had thought maybe one about design or practices and another of a more technical focus. Recently I came across one book that I thought might be useful to read: http://xunitpatterns.com/index.html It seems like an interesting book, but the comments I read on amazon.co.uk show that the book is probably longer than it needs to be. Has anyone read it and can comment on this? • Create a custom shortcut that types clipboard contents

  I want to paste my clipboard contents to a remote session such as VNC, IPMI, or Raritan. To accomplish this, I installed xdotool and clip. Then I wrote a simple command that types the clipboard contents: xdotool type "$(xclip -o)" This works if I stay in a terminal window, and type that command myself. It types back my clipboard contents when I run the command. Of course now I want to make this into a hotkey that works in any window. However, if I create a custom shortcut using Keyboard settings, it doesn't work. If I assign a hotkey Alt+K to the shortcut, nothing happens when I press it. If I use Ctrl+K, unexpected behavior occurs to whatever window has focus. e.g. my terminal window size shrinks (it's somewhat amusing, actually). Similar results occur if I save it as a script and call the script, or if I encapsulate the command with sh -c. How can I make practical use of the powerful xdotool type command?

  This is a conglomeration question when answering please specify which part you are addressing. I am looking at creating a maze type game that utilizes elevation. I have a few features I would like to have, but am unsure as to some of the implementation. I have done work doing fileIO maze generation (using a key to read the file, and then generate the level based on that file), but I am unsure how to think about this with elevation in the mix. I think height maps might be a good approach, but don't know how to represent them effectively. for a height map which is more beneficial XML(containing h[u,v] data and key definition), CSV (item1 is key reference, item2 is elevation), or another approach that I have not thought of yet? When it comes to placing the elevation values themselves what kind of deltah values are appropriate to have it noticeable at about a 60degree angle while not really effecting gravity driven physics (assuming some effect while moving up/down hill)? I am thinking of maybe going to procedural generation at some point, but am wondering if it is practical to have a procedurally generated grid (wall squares possibly same dimensions as the open space squares), or if designing to a thin wall open spaces is better? this decision will effect the amount of work need on the graphics end for uniform vs. irregular walls. EDIT: game will be a elevation maze shooter. levels/maps will be mazes with elevation the player has to negotiate. elevations will have effects on "combat" vision, and movement

• Reassessment: What's a good analytics package to use for tracking user behavior in a native iOS app?

  Hello. I've been poking around google and SO for answers on this, but it doesn't seem to be very well discussed, so I thought I revisit the question. Is anyone using any analytics packages (like Google Analytics or Mixpanel) to track user behavior in their native iOS apps? The three I've come across are Flurry, Mixpanel, and Google Analytics. It sounds like Apple is still peeved at Flurry, so I don't want to mess with that. Mixpanel looks simple and easy to use, but I'd first like to hear from someone who has used it. Same goes with Google Analytics for the iPhone. I've just finished building an iPhone game and I'd like to begin tweaking it based on how the users are playing it. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with any of these analytics packages? Thanks so much!

• How do I stop Google indexing my main page as https [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: https:// search results appearing on Google for purely http:// site 2 answers Due to historic reasons, we have things set up so that "www.mydomain.com" redirects to "store.mydomain.com". This has worked perfectly fine until recently, when Google appears to be sending visitors to "https:// www.mydomain.com" which doesn't have an SSL-certificate (and never has). Strangely, its only the first link that goes to "https:// www.mydomain.com", all other links point correctly to "http:// store.mydomain.com". Because there is no certificate on the "www" version, users are getting an error message. How do I make Google revert to pointing the main link at "http:// store.mydomain.com" (or even "http:// www.mydomain.com.") If I remove "https:// www.mydomain.com" from Google webmaster tools, will this also remove the redirected page ("http:// store.mydomain.com)? Thanks.

• HP 655 Notebook (Ubuntu 12.04) wireless internet disabled after running updates

  Today the update-manaeger suggested that I should download some updates. So I did. After the updates were installed I had to reboot the system. After the reboot my notebook doesn't see any wireless networks. I was looking for a long time on the internet for answers but non of them applies to my case. I have the idea, it has got something to do with the kernel I am currently using (Linux 3.2.0-55). Is this one new for Ubuntu 12.04? When I boot my system I can choose to use an older kernel (linux 3.2.0-32). When I use this one the notebook does see the wireless networks. This is my network card according to the command lspci: Ralink corp. RT3290 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe Anyone an idea to fix my problems with wireless internet?
