• "Input not Supported" on external monitor

  when it rains, it pours! Im helping a friend with his Dell Inspiron 1520. The hdd crashed and and top of that, the screen is cracked. I've replaced the hdd (SATA-5400), but the lcd replacement is only comin in a months time. I've tried to: hook the laptop up to an Acer 18.5" lcd monitor via VGA, boot up into Windows 7 installer, get to the Step-1 screen, Switch to external display (Function-F8) ...and get the "Input not supported" message on the Acer lcd. I know that this is a resolution problem, but cant for the life of me figure out how to solve this. I've also tried, hooking it up to my TV via Composite cables (got a VGA-Composite adaptor). Please could someone advise me what to do? -Thank u!

• monitor power and lock screen (Ubuntu Lucid)

  Hi, I'm trying to get my screen to turn off whenever I lock my screen. I know that in Power Management, there's an option to turn off the screen after a set amount of time, and I know about xset dpms force off, but the former doesn't allow me to turn off the screen from the logout menu, and the latter only turns the screen off for a short amount of time (1 minute or so. The screen just turns back on by itself). Is there a script I can modify to change what happens when "Lock screen" from the logout menu is selected, or is there a script I can add to the panel to lock the screen and then turn the monitor off (and turning it back on when I shake the mouse or something)? • How To Adjust Properly Brightness And Contrast On Monitor

  This days, it seems that I either go worse with my eyes or some settings with contrast and brightness have been changed. However, I have been searching now for some tutorial on how to adjust contrast and brightness, and I have found already some, on how to use Microsoft Win7 Calibrate Display Color program, but some people don't recommend it.. My monitor control menu shows settings (which are by default) that contrast is set to 80, contrast to 90 and sharpnes to 45, for which I belive are pretty dam high. I'm usually every day in front of my PC about 6-10h. The biggest problem is, when the night comes, and I have to read some word document, after a 10-15m of reading, eyes starts hurting. I'm using ASUS VW198 and Nvidia 9800 GT graphic card. So please suggest me, what should I decrease, contrast or brightness or both?

• Linux foxboard network monitor

  I want to use a Foxboard a simple network monitor for multiple routers (all routers are connected to the internet). Foxboard is a mini pc with an embedded version of Debian. My idea is to use multiple virtual network devices like this: eth0 192.168.2.10 eth0:1 192.168.3.10 eth0:2 192.168.4.10 I found a nice Python script to ping an external host here (the solution from Ryan Cox): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/316866/ping-a-site-in-python Is it possible to configure Debian to use eth0 when I ping www.site-a.com and eth0:1 when I ping www.site-b.com?

• I can't set the resolution to that recommended by my monitor

  Firstly, I have looked here but didn't find what I needed. I have a Dell Optiplex 380 only using the on-board graphics (believe its the Intel G41 Express Chipset) but I can't seem to get the resolution right. The monitor I'm using (HP LE1901w) wants me to use 1440x900 but the only options I get are: 1600 x 1200 1366 x 768 1360 x 768 1280 x 1024 1280 x 960 1152 x 864 1024 x 768 800 x 600 So it will allow me to go higher or lower but not 1440x900. I've tried getting the driver from various different sources (Dell, Intel, Windows 7 Update) but still can't get that option. Does anybody know what else I can try?

• Applescript won't open applications on my external monitor

  I'm trying to open a new MacVim window with Applescript, and have found partial success with this: do shell script "cd \"~/code/application\"; ~/bin/mvim > /dev/null 2>&1" This works fine, and opens a new MacVim window with it's working directory set to ~/code/application. BUT it always opens on the screen of my laptop, not on the external monitor with the currently active space where I am working. Is there a way to get MacVim to open in the current space? • Can not connect remotely to MySQL Server on Ubuntu 10.10

  Ok I have searched google for two days trying to get this to work. Here are the steps I have taken so far: Clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 Install mysql 5.1 as well as admin Comment out the bind address in the config file Create a new database Create a new user that is username@% to allow remote connections Grant all access to this user to the new database EXCEPT the grant option Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the localhost Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the server internal network ip Login from a remote computer is ok using this new user and database using the internal network ip Login is not working when logging in with this username and database using the external ip address from the server or the remote computer. I have port forwarding enabled for this port and it is viewable from outside as confirmed by canyouseeme.org I have nmap'd using the following command on the internal ip and get the below result: nmap -PN -p 3306 192.168.1.73 Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-02-19 13:41 PST Nmap scan report for computername-System-Name (192.168.1.73) Host is up (0.00064s latency). • How to monitor nginx proxy cache?

  I would like to see which objects get cached by my nginx reverse proxy (with an apache as a backend). So far I could not find a way, only the info that its not implemented yet. The reason is that I would like to tweak my configuration for best performance without putting too much stress on the server, as the backend is a production system. I know benchmarking would be better, but its not an option right now. So I though an alternative measure would be to monitor the cache. Is that possible, and if yes, how? (despite patching nginx with the patch mentioned in the link above)

• Debian Squeeze - Monitor outgoing traffic

  I have a small webserver that running on Lighttpd 1.4 which steadily uses 250GB or less bandwidth for the past couple of months. But since May the traffic spikeed to more than triple of what it was. Nothing special was on my site to make its spike like that. When I checked with vnstat I found that 70% of the bandwidth is tx. I suspect I've been hacked and my webserver is becoming some sort of bot. ClamAV comes out with nothing and I already replaced the Joomla installation with a fresh one, early in June. But right now the traffic stayed the same. My question, how can I monitor my server and look what is transmitting all that data out? My need to be done to pinpoint what is the culprit. Can someone please point to the right way to solve this? Thank you.

  I'm a noob and have some questions about viewing who accessed a file. I found there are ways to see if a file was accessed (not modified/changed) through audit subsystem and inotify. However, from what I have read online, according to here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-audit-files-to-see-who-made-changes-to-a-file.html it says to 'watch/monitor' file, I have to set a watch by using command like: # auditctl -w /etc/passwd -p war -k password-file So if I create a new file or directory, do I have to use audit/inotify command to 'set' watch first to 'watch' who accessed the new file? Also is there a way to know if a directory is being 'watched' through audit subsystem or inotify? How/where can I check the log of a file?

• Asus Z8NA-D6, not powering up/no signal for monitor

  I have a Asus Z8NA-D6 motherboard. Been running fine so far with one E5504 Xeon processor. I have added another Xeon E5504 CPU to the second slot and it will not power up (or there is no signal to the monitor). The status lights turn on as normal. no error led. Nothing happens other then the leds start and both cpus/fans power up. HDD power up. I tried clearing CMOS. Any sugestions? http://www.asus.com/Server_Workstation/Server_Motherboards/Z8NAD6/#download Update. Removing ram for second cpu makes it boot atleast. itboots with memory pluged in for cpu 1. (2 4gb modules) when addin one more to the second cpu it still boots but bios only see the 2 blocks at cpu 1)

  I am using active directory in windows server 2008 R2 having IP address is 10.10.10.10 and my DSL modem Ip is 10.10.10.101. All clients are using 10.10.10.101 default gw to access the Internet. I don't know who is using Torrent in network or downloading something via IDM or something else. I just want to Monitor my clients for who are download via torrent or whatever. Is there anything in Windows Server 2008r2 that would allow me to do this monitoring, or do I need something else?

  I bought a used 15" ViewSonic LCD monitor (VP150m) and noticed that it has a 3.5mm connector on the back labeled “touch i/o”. I’m trying to figure out how to use the touch function but am having trouble finding anything useful. First, I cannot find any information on what kind of cable it uses (TS, TRS, TRRS, etc.), or how to connect it to the computer. Second, I cannot find touch drivers for it—though I can find a page that mentions how easy it is to install them. Does anyone have any information on using the touchscreen function of the VP150m? • Looking for "pad" for my keyboard + mouse in a multi-monitor setup

  I've got 2 large monitors. My keyboard and mouse are in the middle of my desk which is appropriate for work on both monitors but when I want to focus on one of them only (say that I'm writing in MS Word on the right monitor), I'd like to move my keyboard and mouse to the right. I can do that manually but because of all the wires and other things, it is quite inconvenient when done frequently. I'm looking for something that I would put under both my keyboard and my mouse and that would slide to one side or the other easily. Is there anything like that available on the market?

  I'm on a office network and there are around 12 PCs that are connected to a switch and then to a Prolink Router. Now the Internet connection is very slow and I'm the one who manage all the computers. I want to monitor bandwidth usage of each computer on the LAN. how can I achieve this using my computer. I cannot install any software on the client computers other than mine. I tried wireshark but, it only shows my network usage so there is no use with the data I get from it. Is there any specific software that I can use within my PC to get the bandwidth details of other computers. I'm on a windows 7 x64bit PC with admin privileges. Thank you.

• Multiple Users use Script to Access Remote Server via Passwordless SSH

  I am currently setting up a linux box that is tied into Active Directory. This box will allow users to SSH into it with their AD username and password to gather information (Box A). The issue is I am trying to create a function in /etc/bash.bashrc so the users has to do is type "get_info" for example, the function will SSH into a remote machine (Box B) run a command and output the information back to the user. The issue with this is, I have generated a rsa key on Box A, added it to the Box B authorized_keys and it works fine. The issue I am running into is, how do I set this up one time for the current users and any new user who logs into Box A. Is there a better approach than what I am currently doing. Essentially I just need to connect to the remote box, run a command, output the information back to the user and that is it. How can I allow new users to connect via a script to the remote box without having to generate RSA keys for them. The get_info fuction will be supplied a value 'get_info 012345' and returns the results.

• VMWare Converter - Remote Linux Install P2V

  I am trying to get what I thought was an easy process working. Here is my situation. I have a remote linux server (running Debian) that I would like to turn into a VM so that I can do testing on it rather than the production server. I downloaded VMWare Converter. I went to the "convert machine" wizard, chose Powered-on machine, entered my remote machine details. Clicking next shows that it correctly connects to my remote linux box. Now, on the next screen, for Destination type, it enters "WMWare Infrastructure virtual machine", and I can't change this. This is where I am stuck. Why do I need another sever to convert with? Is this where my VM gets sent to? And why can't I just convert the VM and save it on the computer that I am running the converter program on? If I do have to use a vmware infrastructure destination, I am confused at what ESX is, why and how I use it. Any help with this process would be more than appreciated!

• SQL Server 2008: Can't connect to remote server via management studio but can telnet in fine

  Hi, I am in the process of trying to configure SQL Server 2008 to accept remote connections. I have been through all the documentation I can find and yet when I attempt to connect through management studio I get an error stating that the server could not be found. Interestingly I can connect through telnet to the remote server via the port that sql server is listening on. In the SQL Server logs I can see the connection attempt. So SQL Server is up and running and listening on the correct port - no firewall blocking it. It would appear that by default SQL Server is listening on port 50314 by default but management studio attempts to connect on port 1433.Weird. Server Management Studio = no dice. Anyone got any ideas? Server is set to allow remote connections - TCP IP is enabled, firewall is off. Thanks UPDATE FOR TO CLEAR THINGS UP A BIT We are seeing the connection attempt when we telnet in on port 50314 in the sql server logs. When we login through management studio we see it attempting connection on port 1433. There is no sign of this connection attempt in the logs.

• How a batch file runs on a remote machine started by PSEXEC

  I am having an issue running a Batch file on a remote machine suing PSEXEC. The file runs but does not run like it does when run through remote desktop. The batch runs a file which is a 32 bit application, which opens multiple 16bit applications, this should all run under one ntvdm.exe (In one Memory Space). Through remote desktop the batch file runs under the explorer process, and works correctly opening only one ntvdm.exe. Using PSEXEC the batch runs but not under the explorer process, a separate ntvdm.exe is open for each process. I found running the batch from explorer in PSEXEC works, but comes up with a "File Download - Security Warning" eg. psexec.exe" \compname -u username -p passowrd -s -d -i 0 explorer C:\Program.bat I want to be able to run the batch successfully without receiving warnings, it is a local warning and not a network share warning. Possible to recreate warning typing "explorer C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" in Run I would like to know if anyone knows of a way to get PSEXEC to open the batch file to run as though it was started by explorer. Or a way of removing the local "File Download - Security Warning" Thanks

  After an Active Directory fail RDP connection started to ask for credentials twice (once on local RDP program, second time on remote's logon screen) I already looked at Windows 2008 R2 RDS - Double Login Solution provided there doesn't work for me. The server is alone, without AD/DNS services, RDP service isn't installed I tried every security settings on RDP-Tcp (RDP, Negotiate, SLL) Logon option is set to "Use credentials from the client" Both windows client and server use RDP 7.1 fPromptForPassword regitries are set to 0 Local Computer Policy\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Security\Always prompt for password upon connection is set to "Disabled" Why i am sure the problem comes from the server and not the client ? This problem affected a 3rd RDP program on Android too (it was directly showing "preparing desktop previously, on both MS RDP and the 3rd program) No bakcup are available (Else the Active Directory wouldn't be a fail, but just a lose of time) I am wondering if a rule linked to RDP got changed after the AD install+unistall, but i'm unable to find where. While this is not a critic problem, this is very annoying. I don't know if more information are needed, if it's the case and if you are patient enough, please tell me what is missing and i'll edit this post to add the missing informations.

• Weird .#filename files on remote ssh-connected systems after mcedit

  I'm using MacFusion sshfs in combination with Midnight Commander, and when I edit remote text files with mcedit, weird symlinks are created on the remote system. $ ls -l .* lrwxr-xr-x 1 user group 34 Jun 27 01:54 .#filename.txt -> [email protected] where etranger is my local login name, and mbp is a hostname of my notebook running MacOS. symlinks can be removed by running remote rm command, but cannot be deleted on the mac-fuse mounted volume and thus pollutes the filesystem. I cannot figure what part of software is responsible for this, and how I could fix this, any help is appreciated. EDIT: This appears to be mcedit behavior as documented here: https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/8245 Apparently, sshfs fails to remove symlink to the lock file for some reason (".#" in filename, perhaps), and it pollutes the filesystem. A quick workaround is possible, using another bug of Midnight Commander: editing (F4) the broken symlink effectively converts it to a missing lock file it was supposed to point to, and removes the symlink itself. The newly created file may then be deleted normally. EDIT 2: Unchecking "Follow symlink" in MacFusion apparently allows sshfs to remove dead symlinks, so the problem disappears completely.

• Rsyslog stops sending data to remote server after log rotation

  In my configuration, I have rsyslog who is in charge of following changes of /home/user/my_app/shared/log/unicorn.stderr.log using imfile. The content is sent to another remote logging server using TCP. When the log file rotates, rsyslog stops sending data to the remote server. I tried reloading rsyslog, sending a HUP signal and restarting it altogether, but nothing worked. The only ways I could find that actually worked were dirty: stop the service, delete the rsyslog stat files and start rsyslog again. All that in a postrotate hook in my logrotate file. kill -9 rsyslog and start it over. Is there a proper way for me to do this without touching rsyslog internals?
