For each new instance, I install the following softwares: etckeeper which keeps tracks of every changes in /etc shorewall to have a simple setup for firewall rsnapshot which keep incremental backup of important directories cron-apt: which take charge of update of the system (or, in my case, send me an email to warn me about new updates) But I was wondering if you administrators have any other wonderful tools for daily management. I'm not talking about remote management (like cfengine) but little tools which help to manage a small number of Linux servers.

• iR Remote TO IR Reciever in phone TO PC

  I'm too cheap and stingy to buy a proper USB infrared receiver for my PC, however my phone (Nokia N95) has a receiver built in. I know for a fact that there must be some API to access it (for Tx at least) as the irRemote works. Is there any good programs available or how would I start to set up so that my phone sends all the iR data captured by it over Wifi or Bluetooth to my Windows PC for use in XBMC or other programs?

• Remote Desktop with resource sharing

  I recently removed ubuntu from my laptop and installed Windows 7 because Microsoft's DreamSpark program gave me Visual Studio Pro for free and I want to do some C# programming with it. The problem is that my laptop's screen is small, it's resources are extremely limited, and it doesn't have a full sized keyboard. However, I do have a desktop that is my primary system, and it's got a quadcore and tons of RAM in it, and dual monitors. My question is this, is there a way I can use a program from my laptop, on my desktop, and share my desktops CPU and RAM with the laptop? Everything is connected through a 100 MB/s switch. One caveat, my desktop is running ubuntu.

  Hello. I have just installed Microsoft SQL Express from here: http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express-down.aspx I need it because an example of some code I have uses it. My question is: How do I start using it? Which port it opens by default. All I have after installing it is this: I'm not asking for a full tutorial on how to admin MSSql, just a hint on what to do next. I have downloaded and tested in the past Oracle XE and test it with SQuirreL SQL client with out problems.

• Remote login/access on windows

  Hi I was wondering what software I can use to access my and other machines remotely? I used ssh which is nice but i don't know how it would be like on windows. (I assume its the same idea but windows console instead of a bash terminal?) Windows has a lot of applications that require GUI/MouseClicks. Actually I don't know a single ssh or vpn command line installer not that i'm complaining (but is helpful if you can mention some). I haven't use a VPN, is this taking control of a users screen/session? Or is it another instance/session as if you logged in as a different user on that box? What solutions are at my disposal for windows? (7)

• Remote Desktop not following display settings

  I have my RDP client set up to use highest settings for connecting to another PC on my LAN, which has display settings 1280x1024x32bit. RDP is specifically set to use 32bit depth, but when I connect it drops to 16bit. The PC I connect to is (amongst other things) used to do some 3D graphics. I don't expect great performance, just to check it works... but it doesn't over RDP, the 3D app doesn't think the hardware is the same. Does RDP's integration with Windows mean it is providing some virtualised rendering system? Should I use something less 'clever' like VNC, to literally screen-grab the contents of the screen without altering the settings?

• Suggestions on the best home server rack cabinet

  I have a lot of gear in a colocation facility right now. Some of it is going to come home with me now. I do not know anything about the "rack mount" side of the industry. I lease a rack, and I put my stuff in it. I have a few 1U boxes, a few 2U boxes, and a few 4U boxes. 1U switch. One is a new Xserve, which means it is deep. I think I can get by with around 12U to 18U. I want to keep it as small as possible, since I do not have a lot of spare space at my home. I will not be able to bolt to the wall, floor etc, so it should not be tall. This is something I would love to more or less just be a box that sits on the floor but gives me the ability to mount nicely, do nice cable management etc. Are the "post" style racks junk? I am liking the open space, and the no limitations on depth of something like this: http://www.rackmountsolutions.net/images/products/Martin-relay-rack.jpg However, that thing is way too tall, and probably way too expensive. I am looking to be around $300.00 or less. More if I have to, though I would prefer not to. These look near perfect: (See comment for this link, the system will not let me post a second url) but I am worried the Xserve will not fit in it. If anyone has any good links, or website recommendations of good past experience, I would appreciate it. I am almost considering that I may be able to build something with random scraps of stuff at Home Depot as well.

• Remote Mac OS X server using Windows 7 with VNC

  I've search most of the topic around here in @SuperUser and around most of the webs they can easily access Windows uing Mac OS X but I have a question can I access my Mac using Windows? I've activate my screen sharing on my Mac OS X and I can use another Macbook to access it no problem but once I use TightVNC or UltraVNC and any VNC base program non of them really worked for me. So is there any alternative to VNC to give me option to access my Mac using VNC or something like that? Thanks.

• windows server 2008 r2 remote desktop issue with roaming clients

  I have the following situation : a Dell windows server 2008 R2 computer, with remote desktop services installed. I have installed a java application making use of a PostgreSql database, and made this application available for clients using RDP. Clients are standard Win XP pc's and Psion Neo handheld devices running Windows CE 5 Pro. The application works fine for clients on standard XP pc's connected directly via cat 5E Ethernet cable to a Dell Powerconnect 2816 switch. The Psion Neo clients connect wireless to the network via Motorola AP6532 access points. These access points are connected via a POE adapter to the same switch as the XP pc's. The Psion devices can connect without any problem and very quickly to the server and to the application using RDP. So far, so good. When the Psion devices move around in the warehouse, and they roam from one access point to the other, the RDP session on the client freezes for approx 1 minute, and then it automatically resumes the session. This freezing is very annoying for the users. Can anyone help in solving this issue? Update (August 9) : After re-installing the access points we have a working situation, but only when connecting to the RDP host : * via a Win Xp SP3 laptop * via a Symbol MC9190 Win CE 6 mobile device When roaming we notice a small hick-up less then 1 second, what is very acceptable. With the Psion NEO it's still not working, when roaming the screen freezes from 2 to 30 seconds. The RDP client on the win xp sp3 laptop and the symbol mc9190 is version 6.0. The RDP client on the neo is version 5.2. I have changed the security layer on the RDP host to RDP security layer (based on forums on the internet), because older RDP clients seem to have issues with the RDP 7.1 protocol on the Win server 2088 R2. Psion adviced us to do some network logging activity on the different devices. We made this logging via wireshark, and based on this the conclusion of Psion is that the server fails in handling tcp-requests. Can anyone give me a second opinion by analysing the wireshark loggings. Thanks in advance. Regards Patrick

• Remote Desktop Client in Windows 7 Full Screen Issue

  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on a new laptop and I'm having one of the most annoying issues with the RDP client (mstsc.exe). If I restore the full screen RDP window, I lose the ability to go back to full screen. The only way I can get it back is by running a new instance of mstsc, setting the option back to full screen, and connecting again. I don't have this problem on any other machine (granted, this is the only copy of Home Premium I have). Is this a known issue? Is there a patch/fix? It's pretty obnoxious, I'm having to train myself to not use the restore button and only minimize it (which limits uses).

  Whenever I log into my Windows 7 desktop from my Windows 7 laptop using RDC, the Num Lock is enabled on the host computer and it is not disabled after disconnecting. What can I do to stop the Num Lock from being enabled or automatically disable it at the end of the session? (I do not know if this happens only on Windows 7 and have no way of checking, so I went with the generic windows tag)

  When working from Windows, I prefer to use RoyalTS instead of the default Microsoft RDP client, because it allows me to save multiple connections, the credentials of the connection, etc; as well has having more than 1 connection open at a time. Is there a similar (or any) alternative to the Microsoft RDP client for connecting from OSX to Windows? Aside from VNC, that is; at this point I'm hoping to continue using the RDP protocol.

• SQL Server 2008 - Error starting service - model.mdf not found?!

  my SQL server 2008 was running fine. About an hour ago, it suddenly stopped - the MSSQLSERVER service had stopped I right clicked, clicked start, and it said the service had started, and stopped I looked in the event log and saw these two errors: 17207 : udopen: Operating system error 3(error not found) during the creation/opening of physical device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf. 17204 : FCB::Open failed: Could not open device C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\model.mdf for virtual device number (VDN) 1. The model.mdf db has NEVER been in that location - i specified drive F: to use for data / log during install. I checked the SQL Configuration Manager, to try and set startup params, but SQL Server is not listed as one of the services..... EDIT: I've now moved the db to where it was looking for: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\ directory. Now if I start the service, it still does not work - i get this error message in the log: Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID 3, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes. Interestingly, i checked the error log - around the time users reported problems, there is this: 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 Configuration option 'show advanced options' changed from 0 to 1. Run the RECONFIGURE statement to install. 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 FILESTREAM: effective level = 0, configured level = 0, file system access share name = 'MSSQLSERVER'. 2010-01-08 17:11:26.44 spid51 Configuration option 'Agent XPs' changed from 1 to 0. • Camtasia on remote computer?

  I have a need to use one laptop for a live presentation (with projector, etc.), but record that presentation on another laptop -- similar to what I can do with Camtasia, only with the recording happening on another laptop. Is this possible? What do I need to do this? Some VGA device that goes between the presenting machine and the projector? Some USB device? My ideal requirements: The machines must be "standard" laptops (so I can't just add a new card to a desktop, etc.). I prefer a hardware solution, but cannot involve studio type equipment. I'd prefer not to install Camtasia (or similar) on the presenting machine for two reasons: licensing issues performance issues (sometimes the presentations are machine intensive and I don't want the recording software to interfere with the presentation) I'd appreciate any tips.   I've always used Edit Top 200 Rows and then edited the query in the SQL Pane of the 2008 Management Studio to find the rows I want to edit data for. Now I have the tools inside Visual Studio 2012 and want to use be able to change the query after right clicking a table and choosing "View Data" but I can't see that this is possible. Has the "SQL Pane" feature been removed or am I not seeing something?

• How can I send a Ctrl+Alt+Delete through Remote Desktop in Windows 8?

  I need to send a CtrlAltDelete to a remote machine through Remote Desktop. The CtrlAltDelete is being intercepted by Windows 8, regardless of whether the remote desktop has focus or is in full screen. I'm remoting in to a Windows XP machine, and I've tried launching Remote Desktop through both the desktop and the Modern UI. How can I send a CtrlAltDelete? I'd rather not install anything on the machine.

• Remote Desktop to a user while still logged on

  Is there a way to connect remotely to another user while there is a user still on the same PC. So one PC with users and both of them logged in at the same time, one locally and one remotely? Sorry i didn't explain my question very well, I don't mean 2 users viewing the same screen. I mean 2 user accounts. Say UserA is sitting at the desk on his account. and then UserB is on his account account but it remotely connecting to it. So they both have different desktops in front on their respective screens.

  I have 3 "client" computers, on which the mentioned user is administrator: CPU1: Win Vista 32-bit -- User: Domain\User1 -- IP: 192.168.42.1 CPU2: Win 7 64-bit -- User: localhost\User2 -- IP: 192.168.42.2 CPU3: Win 7 64-bit -- User: Domain\User3 -- IP: 192.168.42.3 And a "target" computer (the one that I want to shutdown from the three others): TGT: Win 7 64-bit -- User: localhost\User4 -- IP: 192.168.42.21 I'm trying to shutdown TGT with the following command: shutdown /s /m \\192.168.42.21 It's working from CPU1 (meaning TGT shuts down), but from CPU2 and CPU3 I get the following message: Access denied. (5) What am I to understand? What should I do to get it working form all of my computers.
