• Virtual dedicated server repetitive draining RAM, OOM constantly

  My linux (fedora red hat 7) virtual dedicated server has been experiencing OOM multiple times a day for the past several days. I thought the issue was with spamd/spamassassin but after disabling this the errors remains. It is frustrating as I barely have anything running on the server and use the tiniest fraction of bandwidth.   I am part of an organization in which there is contention amongst some very competent folks as to whether or not testing cross-browser behavior for JavaScript applications on virtual machines (for IE6/7/8, FF2/3, Chrome on XP/Vista/7) is reliable. This is using VMWare server on a Linux box host. While the discrepancies seen are few, there are cases in which it has proven difficult to tell if it is a product of virtualization or just different machine configurations. My question to the community is, what is people experience with this? Is there any credence to the claim that VM pose inconsistencies, or are they generally spot-on reliable? Can we trust them?

• Virtual Mode List View Click 1 Selects More Than One Items

  I have a list view with virtual mode set to true and other things. It doing ok. But 1) Say there are 25 items and 15 of them are visible, that is to see the rest of 10 items need to scroll down. 2) Before scrolling swap two items, say myItems[0], it must be visible & myItems[20], it must be not visible scroll required. 3) Now select the first item, it was swapped, you now have two items selected, both 0 indexed and 20 indexed ones. When after swap, those two list view items are of same Position and same Bounds. But before 20-indexed item's Position was (-1, -1) and Bounds was (0,0,0,0). How come 0-indexed item didn't change its position & size? How to solve this ?

• Rails - building an absolute url in a model's virtual attribute without url helper

  I have a model that has paperclip attachments. The model might be used in multiple rails apps I need to return a full (non-relative) url to the attachment as part of a JSON API being consumed elsewhere. I'd like to abstract the paperclip aspect and have a simple virtual attribute like this: def thumbnail_url self.photo.url(:thumb) end This however only gives me the relative path. Since it's in the model I can't use the URL helper methods, right? What would be a good approach to prepending the application root url since I don't have helper support? I would like to avoid hardcoding something or adding code to the controller method that assembles my JSON. Thank you

• Virtual and Physical Memory / OutOfMemoryException

  Hi, I am working on a 64-bit .Net Windows Service application that essentially loads up a bunch of data for processing. While performing data volume testing, we were able to overwhelm the process and it threw an OutOfMemoryException (I do not have any performance statistics on the process when it failed.) I have a hard time believing that the process requested a chunk of memory that would have exceeded the allowable address space for the process since its running on a 64-bit machine. I do know that the process is running on a machine that is consistently in the neighborhood of 80%-90% physical memory usage. My question is: Can the CLR throw an OutOfMemoryException if the machine is critically low on available physical memory even though the process wouldn't exceed it's allowable amount of virtual memory? • Autotest notifications on Ubuntu virtual environment

  I am having trouble getting Rails autotest notifications to work on the Engine Yard Vagrant environment. On the Mac, I normally get the notifications via Growl. However, on the virtual environment (which runs Ubuntu) that doesn't work.   I develop rails in ubuntu and i just set up a virtualbox windows xp virtual machine for IE testing. I'd like to be able to run mongrel_rails in ubuntu and then jump into the vm to check it out, so i can jump back, make a change, jump into the vm again, reload the page and test it, etc. Is this possible? In this sort of situation in the past i've had to set up an apache server on my dev machine and run mongrel under that, in order to get an externally visible (ie visible to my local network) ip address that i then paste into the address bar of IE in the vm. Is this really necessary? Is there a simpler way? Can i do something with my /etc/hosts or sites-available files to just make up some arbitrary network address which points to localhost:3000 in ubuntu? Or something? thanks, max

I suspect it should be ok, as the 'this' pointer is an implicit parameter rather than anything stored, but are there any other hidden nasties I should be aware of?

I have seen people suggest webhost4life.com, hostmysite.com and others but they do not offer windows server 2008 hosting, only 2003. I have also looked at mosso and aspnix.com. Mosso seems like a good move, but an hoping to find something below $100 a month and I have heard extremel mixed reviews on aspnix.com. Thanks for the help.

  Hi, I'm trying to create a virtual wiki but I already struggle with In your Class Editor, create a new class called "XWikiServerClass" Further reading in the DevGuide / DataModel shows that I'm not alone. I understand the words saying but I don't get the how-to as there is no option in the class-editior of creating new classes. Navigating to class editor shows an info box No class is defined in this wiki document. You can create one by adding properties from the panel on your right, or you can choose another class to edit from the list below. Ok, I added 'XWikiServerClass' and would have expected to be able to add a type class but that's not possible. I've tried a few properties but nothing shows up as a class in class editor.

  Hello, This image gives a good picture about Virtual Adress space. But it only says half of the story. It only gives complete picture of User Adress space ie.. lower 50% (or 75% in some cases). What about the rest 50% (or 25%) which is occupied by the kernel. I know kernel also has so many different things like kernel modules , device drivers, core kernel itself. There must be some kind of layout right? What is its layout? If you say its Operating System dependent. I would say, there are two major operating systems Windows & Linux.   Is there a way to show subnode if the parent node is hidden in the Virtual String Tree ? I have some tasks in the tree structure and I wish to display only tasks which belongs to the current user as the list, but from all levels. What I've done is the function to display a list, which hides tree buttons, tree lines, sets the fixed indent and enable toShowHiddenNodes option. Then in this function I iterate through the whole tree (all levels) and hide nodes which doesn't belong to the current user IsVisible[Node] := False and show those which belongs him IsVisible[Node] := True, but the subnodes which should be displayed are invisible when their parent is hidden. • Daemon program that uses select() inside infinite loop uses significantly more CPU when ported from

  I have a daemon app written in C and is currently running with no known issues on a Solaris 10 machine. I am in the process of porting it over to Linux. I have had to make minimal changes. During testing it passes all test cases. There are no issues with its functionality. However, when I view its CPU usage when 'idle' on my Solaris machine it is using around .03% CPU. On the Virtual Machine running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8 that same process uses all available CPU (usually somewhere in the 90%+ range). My first thought was that something must be wrong with the event loop. The event loop is an infinite loop ( while(1) ) with a call to select(). The timeval is setup so that timeval.tv_sec = 0 and timeval.tv_usec = 1000. This seems reasonable enough for what the process is doing. As a test I bumped the timeval.tv_sec to 1. Even after doing that I saw the same issue. Is there something I am missing about how select works on Linux vs. Unix? Or does it work differently with and OS running on a Virtual Machine? Or maybe there is something else I am missing entirely? One more thing I am sure sure which version of vmware server is being used. It was just updated about a month ago though. Thanks.

• Record the timestamps of slide changes during a live Powerpoint presentation?

  I am planning to implement a lecture capture solution. One of the requirements is to record both the presenter and the slideshow. The presenter is recorded with a videocamera obviously, and the slideshow will probably be captured using a tool like Camtasia. Now during playback three components are visible: the presenter, the slides and a table of contents. Clicking a chapter title in the TOC causes the video to navigate to the corresponding section. This means that a mapping must be made between chapter titles and their timestamps in the video. Usually a change of topic is accompanied with a slide change in the Powerpoint presentation. So the timestamps could be deduced from the slidechanges. However, this requires me to detect slide changes during the live presentation. And I don't know how to do that. Anyone here knows how to do detect slide changes? Is there a Powerpoint API where I can connect event handlers or something like that? I'd greatly appreciate your help! Interface A is shared by multiple objects. But the implementation of A is dependent on the template argument. Interface B is the seen by the outside world, and needs to be abstrakt. The reason I would like this is that it would allow me to define object C like this: Define the interface C inheriting from abstrakt A. Define the implementation of C using a different datatype for template A. I hope I'm clear. Is there any way to do this, or do I need to rethink my design?

• What is the simplest way to map a folder on the file system to a url in Tomcat?

  Here's my problem... I have a small prototype app (happens to be in Grails hosted on AWS) and I want to add the ability of the user to upload a few (max 10) images. I want to persist these images on disk on the server machine, in a folder location which is outside my WAR. I realise that there is probably a super-scalable solution involving more web servers and optimised static asset serving, but for the approximately 100 users I am likely to get, it's really not worth the effort and cost. So, what is the simplest way I can have a virtual folder from my url map to a physical folder on disk? I sort of want... http://myapp.com/static to map to a folder which I can configure e.g. /var/www/static so I can then have in my code... <img src="/static/user1/picture.jpg"/> I don't particularly mind whether the resulting physical folders are directly browsable. Security will eventually be an issue, but it isn't at the start. So, what are my options? I have looked at virtual hosts on the apache site, but it feels more complicated than I need. I don't want to use the Grails static rendering plugins.

  I have configured a Postfix mail server for two domains: domain1.com and domain2.com. In my configuration domain1 has both virtual users with Maildirs and aliases to forward mail to local users (eg. root, webmaster) and some small mailing lists. It also has some virtual mappings to non-local domains. Domain2 on the other hand has only virtual alias mappings, mainly to corresponding 'users' at domain1 (eg. mails to [email protected] should be forwarded to [email protected]). My problem is that currently Postfix accepts mail even for those users that don't exist in the system. Mail to existing users and /etc/aliases works fine. Postfix documentation states that the same domain should never be specified in both mydestination and virtual_mailbox_maps, but If I specify mydestination as blank then postfix validates recipients against virtual_mailbox_maps but rejects mail for local aliases of domain1.com. /etc/postfix/main.cf: myhostname = domain1.com mydomain = domain1.com mydestinations = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost virtual_mailbox_domains = domain1.com virtual_mailbox_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/vmailbox virtual_mailbox_base = /home/vmail/domains virtual_alias_domains = domain2.com virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases virtual_transport = dovecot /etc/postfix/virtual: domain1.com right-hand-content-does-not-matter firstname.lastname user1 [more aliases..] domain2.com right-hand-content-does-not-matter @domain2.com @domain1.com /etc/postfix/vmailbox: [email protected] user1/Maildir [email protected] user2/Maildir /etc/aliases: root: :include:/etc/postfix/aliases/root webmaster: :include:/etc/postfix/aliases/webmaster [etc..] Is this approach correct or is there some other way to configure Postfix with Dovecot (virtual) Maildirs and Postfix aliases?
