  • Installing updates from hard drive [closed]

    I am using Oneiric Beta 2. Installed it yesterday. Then downloaded 350+ MB of updates and installed it. Then when I tried to auto-mount my drives using Storage manager, I screwed up and the system will boot right up to the Ubuntu Splash screen, then turn off. Anyways planning to reinstall Ubuntu again. But I do not want to have to download the updates again. I have a copy of all the downloaded update files with me. Can anyone tell me how I can install the updates from the hard drive without downloading them again ?? Thanks in advance.....

  • Android Loading Screen: How do I use a stack to load elements?

    I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. I have read this thread here: How do I load chunks of data from an assest manager during a loading screen? It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. If anyone would provide some hints, I'll gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

On my next post I’ll show different approaches to integrate WebCenter Portal, UCM and SES based on some common scenarios. Let’s get started. WebCenter Content Configuration WebCenter Content has a component that adds functionality to the content server to allow it to be searched via the Oracle SES. To enable the component installation, go to Administration -&gt; Admin Server and select SESCrawlerExport. Click the update button and restart UCM_server1 managed server. Once the managed server is back, we’ll configure the component. In the menu, under Administration you should see SESCrawlerExport. Click on the link. You’ll see the window below. Click on Configure SESCrawlerExport. Configure the values below: Hostname: SES hostname. Feed Location: Directory where data feeds will be saved. Metadata List: List of metadata that will be searchable by SES. After updating the values click on the Update button. Come back to the SESCrawlerExport Administration UI and click on Take Snapshot button. It will create the data feeds in the specified Feed Location.   • May I remove ads from feed in my news reader app?

    I'm creating a News Reader app for Tablets and PCs. My app is fetching data from news sources by RSS feed of websites (in the server-side). But some of these sites are showing some advertising banners at the end of each article. Should I remove those banners from the feed? Am I legally/ethically allowed to do this? And what about If I want to put some other ads in my application? (Right at the end of each article) I mean, If I want to have my own advertising service... Update: And what if I use feed for content titles and summaries, but use other thing, like Readability API to show full article, and then put my own ads below content? (Readability gets the HTML page, and gives you a clean page without any ads and such.)

  • Finding files at more speed

    I have been using find command to find files on my 1 tb hard disk. it takes very long. then I used locate which proved to be faster with regular update using updatedb. But the limitation of locate is that I cannot find files with certain size or modified/created time. can you suggest me any ideas on how to find files at more speed or in that case how to pipe output of locate command in a way that all other information like size, time, etc. can be displayed or redirected to a file.

  • Can't access Ubuntu's shared folders from Windows 7

    In Ubuntu Maverick, I've shared some folders using the Nautilus "Sharing Options" GUI. I can see them from Windows 7, but when I try to access them (from Windows) it asks for a username and password. No matter what I enter, it won't let me in. How do I configure this to share normally? Update: I've found that some of the shared folders let me in, but others don't. Of the ones that do, some of their subfolders do, others don't, etc. How can I investigate what's causing this?

  • Configure firewall (Shorewall/UFW) to allow traffic for services on an Ubuntu Server

    I have an Ubuntu Server 11.04 x64 which I want to secure. The server will be open to Internet and I want to be able to SSH/SFTP into the machine and the SSH-server runs on a custom set port. I also want a web server accessible from the Internet. These tasks seems not to hard to perform but I also want SAMBA-shares to be accessible from within the local network and this seems to be a bit trickier. If possible I also want to be able to "stealth" the ports necessary to protect the server further but also allow the SAMBA-shares to be automatically found within the local network. I've never configured firewalls before except for a router and I always bump into a bunch of problem when doing it all by myself so I was hoping for some tips or preferably a guide on how to this. Thank you! Update: On second thought I'd could just as likely go with UFW if the same settings are achievable ("stealth" ports).

  • First mouse click not detected

    Since a few days my mouse reacts different on a click. The first click is not working properly, it seems as it is interpreted as a hoover, the second click is interpreted as the first 'real' click. I tried switching left and right buttons, but behaviour stays the same. Tried restarting unity, implemented ctrl_alt_bksp, but didn't help either. I am running 14.04 Ubuntu, and have all packages up-to-date using apt-get update/upgrade. Is there anybody with a clue? Thanks in advance! Patrick

  • Packages don't show up after adding ppa

    I added ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/firefox-aurora/ubuntu oneiric and ppa:banshee-team/ppa/ubuntu oneiric to my software sources, then did apt-get update. However, after selecting their specific sources from the menu in Software Center, the only packages available are language packs and extensions for Banshee and firefox-aurora. I had already uninstalled Banshee and Firefox. If I try and install Banshee/Aurora with sudo apt-get it will install the old version. Searching for Banshee/Aurora in Software Center only shows the old version. I'm guessing the packages in the PPAs conflict with the packages in the main sources. How do I install the newer versions?

  • How can I get wireless working on an HP-Mini 110-3150?

    I just got an HP Mini 110-3150, and booting from an external hard disk with Ubuntu 10.10 works all fine, except that there is no wireless detected. I noticed that the Wireless indicator is red under Ubuntu, but is enabled under whatever Windows 7 I got on it. So, I understand that it may not get detected at all by Ubuntu at startup time, and there is no manual switch that I can simply slide to turn on/off. How can I get the Wireless device turned ON by default at startup time, and is there any special driver I need to install (proprietary or not) to get it working ? Merci :-) Update: When actually installing on the computer, as a new install, the NIC is not detected at first, but upon restarting, I get a notification of a closed driver available for the wireless. Once installed, updated and restarted, it works fine.

    I have installed both the 64bit and 32 bit versions of 10.10 on my Compaq Presario PC. I first installed the 64 bit version of the OS.The video often crashed when switching user. It also went haywire occasionally when I visited some web-sites. I read that there may be some problems with the 64 bit OS. So I installed the 32 bit version on another disk. This version seemed even less well behaved. HP's model number for the computer is SR1838NX. The hardware is listed at http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00628274&lang=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=1841793&prodTypeId=12454&printver=true#A0 I think the important info is that the chip set is "ATI Radeon Xpress 200" and the processor is "Athlon 64 (S) 3700+ 2.2 GHz" Has anyone else had video problems with similar machines? Is there a work around or an update? I have had previous versions of Ubuntu working on this machine and other flavors of Linux as well. Thanks in advance. John

  • Repacked proprietary software keeps updating the same deb

    I repacked a proprietary program delivered as tar file to a deb file for having a company wide repository. I used reprepro to set up a repository and signed it. A unix timestamp is faking a versioning numbering, so I can have different (real) versions installed at the same time. Almost everything works as expected. The deb file looks like this: mysoft8.0v6_1366455181_amd64.deb Only problem on a client machine it tries to install the same deb file over and over again because it thinks its an update.   • setPosition of Sprite onUpdate in AndEngine

    I am trying to get a "highlighter" circle to follow around a sprite, but I am having trouble, I thought I could use the onUpdate method that's available to me in SequenceEntityModifier but it's not working for me. When I put the onUpdate in, the sprite doesn't move at all. I have a feeling that I am overriding the original onUpdate's actions? Am I going about this the wrong way? I am new to Java, so please feel free to advise if this isn't going to work. UPDATE: The player2 is the sprite that I'm trying to get the highlighter to follow.

  • Why are the packages found with apt-get always horribly out of date?

    Whenever I use the package manager, it can only ever find really old versions of stuff. Example: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install postgresql The best it can do is version 8.4 (3 years out of date). Trying to get a later version, I get: $ sudo apt-get install postgresql-9.1 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package postgresql-9.1 I experience the same issue whenever I use the package manager, so I usually just download and build things from source. How can I make it find up-to-date software?

  • 14.04 LTS, 32-bit, Software Updater error "Failed to download repository information: Check your internet connection"

    There isn't much to say about this one: when I run Software Updater, I get the above error message. That can't be good. Interestingly, when I click on "Settings..." and then close the settings dialogue that pops up, all of a sudden Software Updater successfully finds updates and installs them. I thought I should bring this to the attention of the Ubuntu community. sudo apt-get update returns the following: W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/deluge-team/ppa/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I have screen captures, but I don't have enough reputation points to post them.

    Possible Duplicate: Only ‘sdb’ shows up when installing 12.04 on a new Dell inspiron 14z I am new to Linux and trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a new HP Pavilion DV6TQE Ivy Bridge and being presented with the below screen which I believe is incorrect. My disk is set up as a basic disk (not dynamic) and I tried with a single C:\ partition and by creating a second partition in windows with no luck. Any ideas? UPDATE: I think I know what the problem is but I don't know how to fix it yet.. My hard drive has a 32gb mSSD cache which is listed as dev/sdb. for some reason this is causing the installation trouble.

  • What could be the reason for my resolution to be right running 11.10 on VirtualBox and not on machine?

    When I install Ubuntu 11.10 on my VirtualBox (running on Windows 7) and update the packages, it recognizes the display as the VirtualBox display, and gives me the options of various resolutions, one of them being right for my display, all works well. But then, when i install it on my machine (like was Windows 7) it doesn't give me the resolution options, even with the system updated and the openchrome graphics driver installed (which was also when running on Virtualbox). What could be the reason for this happening? (Could the VB guest software influence on this?)

    Its been noticed, one of our (new)competitor website is ranking 5 for a top keyword with high competition. The website is barely 2 months old. When I checked not much SEO is done on the website other than basic title/desc tags. No backlinks. The website pushed down our website and took its place for the keyword. The only reason that came to my mind is the latest penguin update.     With a distributed cache, a subset of the cache is kept locally while the rest is held remotely. In a get operation, if the entry is not available locally, the remote cache will be used and and the entry is added to local cache. In a put operation, both the local cache and remote cache are updated. Other nodes in the cluster also need to be notified to invalidate their local cache as well. What's a simplest way to achieve this if you implemented it yourself, assuming that nodes are not aware of each other. Edit My current implementation goes like this: Each cache entry contains a time stamp. Put operation will update local cache and remote cache Get operation will try local cache then remote cache A background thread on each node will check remote cache periodically for each entry in local cache. If the timestamp on remote is newer overwrite the local. If entry is not found in remote, delete it from local.

I have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it, and I fear that if I try something that probably doesn't work that it will make my problem worse. (Just for reference I am currently running 10.04 (Lucid) on my machine.)

  • Creating a blog for software changes

    I work for a small company where I maintain a number of project all at once. I would like to create a blog and note software changes/update so that I can keep track of things. Plus it will also serve as help tool for other if they need help. I would like to install something locally on my machine or network, either ASP or PHP is fine. Which software would you recommend? Is it good idea, bad idea? Has anyone done it? I have worked with wordpress and I like it but I am afraid it is not best for code snippets. Any thoughts I do use source control. I am not an expert on it though. I use three different development environment. 1. Visual Studio 2. Eclipse 3. SQL Server Management Studio
