    I have an interview tomorrow morning and just found out that I will also be taking an hour-long Java proficiency test! I am a certified C# .NET developer but have barely touched Java since college. (Yes, I am thinking about switching from .NET development to Java!) I'm not going to be able to effectively cram the whole of the Java library by tomorrow morning. What are some key ideas that I should study that might actually make a difference in such a short time frame? (The examiners will be taking into account that I have had little exposure to Java.) I notic the task options api can add a parameter as a byte[] but I'm unsure how to use it. 1) How would I serialize my object to a byte[]? and 2) How would the task read the byte[] and reconstruct the original object?     Hi Guys, I'm trying to create a user using Membership.CreateUser. After I pass the following line: MembershipUser newUser = Membership.CreateUser(_UserName, _Password, _UserName); I check the 'aspnet_Membership' table and I find out that the user is indeed created. At that point I stop the application and I check the table again. Mysteriously the user that has just been created is dissapeared. Does anyone understands what's going on? Thanks a lot, Assaf.

    I'm trying to pass a quoted string through BUILD_COMMAND in ExternalProject_Add() and every way I try it's getting mangled. The code is this: set (mylibs "-lmylib -lmylib2") ExternalProject_Add(Foo URL http://foo BUILD_COMMAND make SOME_LIB=${mylibs} BUILD_IN_SOURCE 1 ...) I've tried using backslash quotes, double quotes, inlining the whole thing, but every time, either the whole SOME_LIB=... part gets quoted or my injected quotes get escaped. Is it not possible to get quotes through to the command line?

    I have a create action for a form that potentially generates errors (i.e. first name is missing) and then redirects. The problem is, that when the redirect happens those form errors get lost. How could I pass those form errors in a session to be displayed back in the original form (which should still be filled out with the previous details, as in the original error_messages behavior)?     Well, I've heard programmers get to interact with other programmers quiet a lot. But, who gets to meet a lot of new people on a daily basis at work without getting the feeling "Goosh! I'm stuck with him/this for another year :(" - Admins or Coders? And what kind of people domain do each get to interact with? Secondly, I've had this myth for a long time that unlike programmers, Network/System/Security Admins get locked-up in a den and juiced up late nights and early mornings. Most of the time they had to slip out of work without being noticed. But recently one of my seniors from my grad school told he had to work late and on weekends for a product release. How true and often does this happen with programmers and admins?

  • C++0x Overload on reference, versus sole pass-by-value + std::move?

    It seems the main advice concerning C++0x's rvalues is to add move constructors and move operators to your classes, until compilers default-implement them. But waiting is a losing strategy if you use VC10, because automatic generation probably won't be here until VC10 SP1, or in worst case, VC11. Likely, the wait for this will be measured in years. Here lies my problem. Writing all this duplicate code is not fun. And it's unpleasant to look at. But this is a burden well received, for those classes deemed slow. Not so for the hundreds, if not thousands, of smaller classes. ::sighs:: C++0x was supposed to let me write less code, not more! And then I had a thought. Shared by many, I would guess. Why not just pass everything by value? Won't std::move + copy elision make this nearly optimal? Example 1 - Typical Pre-0x constructor OurClass::OurClass(const SomeClass& obj) : obj(obj) {} SomeClass o; OurClass(o); // single copy OurClass(std::move(o)); // single copy OurClass(SomeClass()); // single copy Cons: A wasted copy for rvalues. Example 2 - Recommended C++0x? OurClass::OurClass(const SomeClass& obj) : obj(obj) {} OurClass::OurClass(SomeClass&& obj) : obj(std::move(obj)) {} SomeClass o; OurClass(o); // single copy OurClass(std::move(o)); // zero copies, one move OurClass(SomeClass()); // zero copies, one move Pros: Presumably the fastest. Cons: Lots of code! Example 3 - Pass-by-value + std::move OurClass::OurClass(SomeClass obj) : obj(std::move(obj)) {} SomeClass o; OurClass(o); // single copy, one move OurClass(std::move(o)); // zero copies, two moves OurClass(SomeClass()); // zero copies, one move Pros: No additional code. Cons: A wasted move in cases 1 & 2. Performance will suffer greatly if SomeClass has no move constructor. What do you think? Is this correct? Is the incurred move a generally acceptable loss when compared to the benefit of code reduction?
