• SSH Access Denied despite correct credentials being used

  Hello, I have a remote CentOS server to which I had SSH access to. Today when I try to log in via SSH I just get Access Denied even though I am using the correct credentials. I have plesk 9 access and so have reset the admin password and tried to SSH using that password but to no avail. I even created a new user with SSH access rights and tried to log in as them but again failed with the same access denied. I have rebooted. Can anyone offer any advice? There is no file manager in plesk other than for the web domains so I can't get at any system files to see what is going on. Any advice appreciated.

• Decent bookmark manager/tool for Firefox.

  The built in bookmarks UX for Firefox is dismall. How do I bookmark a page without opening the whole shebang and shoosing a bookmark folder? I can simply 'star' the page, but then it ends up in Unsorted Bookmarks. I can move a bookmark folder to the bookmark toolbar, where I have instant access to all bookmarks in that folder, but I can no longer bookmark a page in that folder in the normal way, because when I have to click the damned bookmark folder icon and manually type in the URL and title. What add-ins are there that can make bookmarking in Firefox humanly sane?

• Cannot access to any windows share including localhost

  I can't access any share from my operating system, including \\localhost and \\127.0.0.1. I have Windows 7. NetBIOS over IP is enabled, other computers in the network can access my shares and other computer's shares, but my operating system cannot access any share. I have installed Windows XP within VMware, and the virtual windows xp can access all shares including the host shares. I can communicate in other ways like TCP, HTTP and gaming, but not access shares. How to solve this problem?

• Blacklist a single access point of a wireless network

  At my university, one of the wireless access points is failing. When something tries to associate to the network using that access point, it deassociates the client, claiming 802.1X authentication failure. Other access points do work normally using the same credentials. The issue has been reported, but after a month it still has still not been fixed. Now, I'm looking for a way to blacklist the access point's BSSID, so the OS prefers other access points on the same SSID. How can I blacklist specific BSSIDs in either Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Windows 7?

• Sharing VPN access between two computers on the LAN

  I have VPN access to several machines in my office from my home machine. I'd like to be able to access those machines from another computer on my LAN, without setuping a second VPN access. Both computers are Windows 7 machines. Is there a way for my "main" computer to share its VPN access to another machine on the LAN? How would one setup this share? I don't think "simple" Internet connection sharing fits my needs because: My LAN already has its own DHCP/Router to access the Internet, and I'd like to keep it this way I can't access the Internet through my VPN connection

• Can I use access used by Visual Basic for building a database [on hold]

  I am the only programmer where I work (summer job) and I am a student with only a few years of programming experience. So I was asked to build a database and I am very excited about this project because hopefully I can learn a lot from this. Using this database my manager is supposed to be able to assign work (dealing with businesses) to different people within the company using an interface (all workers have a shared drive). When workers are done with that paperwork related to the business, they can check off that its done, add comments at the bottom of the interface, and then move on to the next business. The only experience I've had with databases is some querying with SQL, and I've built GUI interfaces with JAVA. The information on the interface will be populated from Excel so workers know what businesses they are dealing with. I've done some research and I believe the best way to build this would be building a GUI using Microsoft Visual Studio (Visual Basic) first, then figuring out a way to populate the Interface from Excel. Also because the data is pretty straight forward and not complicated I will be using MS Access to store and track the database. I know this won't be easy, but for all you geniuses out there, is this on the right path? Thanks.

• Ping Access to a Nested VM !! Plz Help

  I have a problem in communication between the host and the nested VM.This is my layout. I have installed KVM on host machine having a single nic interface (public ip) running Ubuntu.On top of this,I have VM running Ubuntu.I have installed KVM in this VM too.I then have a VM inside this running a web server. I am able to ping the host from this web server VM and ssh into it.But from host to VM ,ping is being unsuccessful. The VM (named L1hyp) on host was created using libvirt-manager and has IP of 192.168.122.8. The vswitch interface created at host is in default config (NAT-ed). Its IP is 192.168.122.1. Now this VM is also having a vswitch interface which is in default config (NAT-ed).Its IP is 192.168.100.1. The Web server VM is created on top of this L1hyp VM, is having an IP of 192.168.100.186. The Webserver VM uses 192.168.100.1 as its default gw. The L1hyp uses 192.168.122.1 as its default gw. From Host: ping 192.168.122.8 - SUCCEEDS ping 192.168.122.1 - SUCCEEDS ping 192.168.100.1 - SUCCEEDS ping 192.168.100.186 - FAILS Comes up with Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.122.1. But there is route to 192.168.100.0/24 subnet from host.Ping to 192.168.100.1 succeeds. From Webserver VM: ping 192.168.100.1 - SUCCEEDS ping 192.168.122.1 - SUCCEEDS SSH from web server VM to host succeeds. Can anyone help me out what needs to be modified to have two way communication between the host and Webserver VM at the earliest? I am pondering over this problem for over a week now.

• Should I manage authentication on my own if the alternative is very low in usability and I am already managing roles?

  As a small in-house dev department, we only have experience with developing applications for our intranet. We use the existing Active Directory for user account management. It contains the accounts of all company employees and many (but not all) of the business partners we have a cooperation with. Now, the top management wants a technology exchange application, and I am the lead dev on the new project. Basically, it is a database containing our know-how, with a web frontend. Our employees, our cooperating business partners, and people who wish to become our cooperating business partners should have access to it and see what technologies we have, so they can trade for them with the department which owns them. The technologies are not patented, but very valuable to competitors, so the department bosses are paranoid about somebody unauthorized gaining access to their technology description. This constraint necessitates a nightmarishly complicated multi-dimensional RBAC-hybrid model. As the Active Directory doesn't even contain all the information needed to infer the roles I use, I will have to manage roles plus per-technology per-user granted access exceptions within my system. The current plan is to use Active Directory for authentication. This will result in a multi-hour registration process for our business partners where the database owner has to manually create logins in our Active Directory and send them credentials. If I manage the logins in my own system, we could improve the usability a lot, for example by letting people have an active (but unprivileged) account as soon as they register. It seems to me that, after I am having a users table in the DB anyway (and managing ugly details like storing historical user IDs so that recycled user IDs within the Active Directory don't unexpectedly get rights to view someone's technologies), the additional complexity from implementing authentication functionality will be minimal. Therefore, I am starting to lean towards doing my own user login management and forgetting the AD altogether. On the other hand, I see some reasons to stay with Active Directory. First, the conventional wisdom I have heard from experienced programmers is to not do your own user management if you can avoid it. Second, we have code I can reuse for connection to the active directory, while I would have to code the authentication if done in-system (and my boss has clearly stated that getting the project delivered on time has much higher priority than delivering a system with high usability). Third, I am not a very experienced developer (this is my first lead position) and have never done user management before, so I am afraid that I am overlooking some important reasons to use the AD, or that I am underestimating the amount of work left to do my own authentication. I would like to know if there are more reasons to go with the AD authentication mechanism. Specifically, if I want to do my own authentication, what would I have to implement besides a secure connection for the login screen (which I would need anyway even if I am only transporting the pw to the AD), lookup of a password hash and a mechanism for password recovery (which will probably include manual identity verification, so no need for complex mTAN-like solutions)? And, if you have experience with such security-critical systems, which one would you use and why?

Martin Matula, a Senior Development Manager at Oracle on the JavaEE/GlassFish team, responsible for the area of web services (including JAX-WS and JAX-RS), was demonstrating Java EE Web Profile and Platform Technologies.Matula was previewing some Java EE 7 WebSocket early access features via a group drawing application that showcases the upcoming JSR 356, “Java API for WebSocket”, which is the API for building RESTful web services and Server-Sent Events, an HTML5 feature. He emphasized that this is supported in Jersey, the reference implementation for JAX-RS, as well.“In this demo,” Matula explained, “I have a simple JavaScript front-end talking to the back-end deployed on GlassFish. It uses RESTful web services to get the list of drawings we have. I can create new drawings and the list is updated immediately using the Server-Sent Events, so the message is coming from the server to the client. Everything is getting updated live using WebSocket, which is the bi-directional communication new protocol in HTML5. This is using Project Jersey and Project Tyrus. Tyrus is the implementation of WebSocket protocol for Java. Jersey implements the RESTful APIs as well as the Server-Sent Events protocol.”

• josso newbie setup problems - can't use tomcat's manager page

  I'm trying to setup josso on an apache tomcat server running on windows. • Windows-mobile app won't run after being closed by Task Manager

  I've inherited some windows-mobile code that I've been bringing up-to-date. I've come across a weird bug, and I was hoping that even though a bit vague, maybe it will spark someone's memory: Running the app (which is basically a glorified Forms app with P/Invoke gps code), I switch to the task manager, and close the app via End Task. Seems to exit fine (no errors and disappears from Task Manager). Unfortunately, the app refuses to start a second time until I reboot the phone or reinstall the CAB. What's worse: this bug is reproducible on a HTC Diamond, but works fine (ie. can run again after EndTask) on an HTC HD2. The only thing I can think of is some kind of timing race between a Dispose() and the Task Manager. Any ideas? I'm also thinking of a workaround - I do have a working "Exit Application" routine that correctly cleans up the app; can I catch the EndTask event in the c# code in order to complete a proper cleanup? Maybe I'm just missing the pain point... all ideas welcome :)

• JPA - Performance with using multiple entity manager

  My situation is: The code is not mine I have two kinds of database: one is Dad, one is Son. In Dad, I have a table to store JNDI name. I will look up Dad using JNDI, create entity manager, and retrieve this table. From these retrieved JNDI names, I will create multiple entity managers using multiple Son databases. The problem is: Son have thousands of entities. It takes each Son database around 10 minutes to load all entities. If there is 4 Son databases, it will be 40 minutes. My question: Is there any way to load all entities and use them for all entity manager? Here are the possibilities I've heard about so far: VNC VNC + SSH Tunnelling NX Server, free edition FreeNX NeatX X2Go X11 Forwarding over SSH xrdp I'm coming at this from a Windows user's perspective: To the best of my experience, RDP (aka Terminal Services) is a reasonably secure (barring mitm/server spoofing), efficient desktop sharing protocol with well-supported clients, that can be exposed to the internet when necessary without major fears of intrusion. To the best of my knowledge straight VNC is none of those things, which is where I get confused - why wouldn't a better desktop sharing technology be developed or used in the open-source world? I know VNC can be wrapped with SSH, but that seems beyond the reach of a casual user. X11 forwarding over SSH may be more or less efficient, I have no idea, but is definitely even more complicated, and doesn't (as far as I know) give you access to already-running stuff (no desktop sharing as such, just remote application running). So, I'd like any feedback/preferences amongst these or any other "Free" desktop sharing options, using these criteria and/or any others: Security (esp. for access across internet) Efficiency (bandwidth usage, responsiveness, etc) Free-ness, as in Speech (not sure where RDP or FreeNX lie for this) Free-ness, as in Beer (are there any commercial solutions with usable dependable free offerings?) Ease of use (server and client side) Cross-OS Client availability Cross-OS Server availability Support for independent sessions and shared (and/or "Console") sessions Ongoing support/maintenance/development Thanks!

• Static objects and concurrency in a web application

  I'm developing small Java Web Applications on Tomcat server and I'm using MySQL as my database. Up until now I was using a connection singleton for accessing the database but I found out that this will ensure just on connection per Application and there will be problems if multiple users want to access the database in the same time. (They all have to make us of that single Connection object). I created a Connection Pool and I hope that this is the correct way of doing things. Furthermore it seems that I developed the bad habit of creating a lot of static object and static methods (mainly because I was under the wrong impression that every static object will be duplicated for every client which accesses my application). Now, is this a bad practice? What happens if let's say 1k users access AccountService simultaneously? I know that all this questions and bad practices come from a bad understanding of the static attribute in a web application and the way the server handles this attributes. • Unable to Connect to Internet with 3G USB Dongle for Particular ISP

  I'm using USB 3G Dongle for Internet. Previously I was using Tata Docomo (India) as provider, and the Internet was working fine. Now I've changed to BSNL, but I'm unable to connect to the Internet on Ubuntu. However, I've checked access point settings and other configuration which are required for BSNL, and it is working fine with same Dongle on Windows 7. Also, I'm able to connect Internet with other providers on Ubuntu, but problem persists only with Ubuntu. The access point for BSNL in my region is bsnlnet. In fact I configure the Dongle with BSNL using default Network Configuration wizard that pops up when USB Dongle is attached. When Dongle is attached and configured with BSNL, I can see network strength in Messaging menu, in Mobile Broadband category, of Ubuntu (note: my network icon still shows "not connected" status). And when I try to use the connection that I've created, it fails to connect. So far, I tried using Sakis3g script that I came up with while wandering over this issue on other forums, it didn't worked either. I also made sure that there are no special configuration made for BSNL on my Windows 7 installation, and still it is working fine there, the problem is only with Ubuntu. How can I fix it?

• About shared (static) Members and its behavior

  I just realized that I can access shared members from instances of classes (probably this is not correct, but compile and run), and also learn/discover that, I can modify shared members, then create a new instance and access the new value of the shared member. My question is, what happens to the shared members, when it comes back to the "default" value (class declaration), how dangerous is it do this ? is it totally bad ? is it valid in some cases ?. If you want to test my point here is the code (console project vb.net) that I used to test shared members, as you can see/compile/run, the shared member "x" of the class "Hello" has default value string "Default", but at runtime it changes it, and after creating a new object of that class, this object has the new value of the shared member. • How do I rescue files from the encrypted home folder via live USB stick?

  I know, this has been asked and answered all over the internet already. However, I start feeling stupid, since the informations there are not helping me. Just this morning, I wanted to install the newest update to 13.10. After the download, when it came to the actual installing, the install program froze and didn't do anything for hours. At that time, I was still logged in. The computer was working and everything was accessable to me. However, I made the mistake and didn't immediately make safety copies of everything. Instead, I just rebooted. Long story short: My computer even fails to reset to a previous version via Grub. But I am able to boot from a USB stick and, after starting Nautilus, I see my home folder on the HD. I would now like to copy its contents onto an external harddisk. Problem 1: I have no rights to access the folder like that. Problem 2: It is encrypted. Problem 3: I don't know how to give myself the rights to access the folder nor do I know how to encrypt it. I assume that it might help that I still know these things: - my old login name - my old login phrase - a 32 characters long string of hexadecimal numbers that I copied to my list of passwords as "Ubuntu Encryption Code". I copied it digitally right after installing Ubuntu the first time and encrypting the home folder, so there won't be any typos. I am sure of that. The solutions that I saw so far, tell me that I need the "encryption phrase". But when I follow the instructions and use this phrase that I have in my list, I only get messages of denial. Can anyone help me through this special problem, please?

• What kind of permission is this? (Groups+Roles)

  I'm starting to need an access control for roles in my app. I don't know much of this, but I understand how vBulletin works: I create groups, then give permissions to groups. I think that what I need is the Role Bases Access Control (RBAC) , but i'm not sure, because I need groups to give permissions instead of single users (Maybe it's not that complicated to achieve). Example of what I'm thinking: Given a post: Editor's Group has permission to view it before it's published. Editor's Group has permission to edit its content. Public Group (Default) has not permission to view it before it's published. Admin Group has permission to delete the post. So basically I wan't orientation about if RBAC is what I need. And also, how would it be good to store group membership in a user, for example, would be good to have: ID NAME PASSWORD GROUPS (1, MyName, MyPassword, 1/2/3/4/5) and explode it via PHP or one registry for every Group membership in a table named permissions, example: USERID, USERGROUP values (1, 1), (1, 2) Maybe should be the second way because of the formal norms but I didn't study yet Databases 1 at college.

  Hey gang, I've having a problem with a VBScript connecting to an access MDB Database. My platform is Vista64, but the majority of resources out there are for ASP/IIS7. Quite simply, I can't get it to connect. I'm getting the following error: 800A0E7A - "Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed" My code is: Set conn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") strConnect = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\database.MDB" conn.Open strConnect So far I have ran %WINDIR%\System32\odbcad32.exe to try to configure the Driver in 32bit mode, but it hasn't done the trick.   How do I transpose rows and columns in Access 2003? I have a multiple tables that I need to do this on. (I've reworded my question because feedback tells me it was confusing how I originally stated it.) Each table has 30 fields and 20 records. Lets say my fields are Name, Weight, Zip Code, Quality4, Quality5, Quality6 through Quality30 which is favorite movie. Let's say the records each describe a person. The people are Alice, Betty, Chuck, Dave, Edward etc through Tommy..
