• Should I run Ubuntu 64bit on a laptop with 2GB of RAM?

  I'm using an Asus K43E laptop with: - Intel Core i3 Sandy Bridge 2.1GHz - 2GB DDR3 - Onboard graphics On the Ubuntu download page, the 32bit version is marked as "recommended", but the community documentation page suggests otherwise: Unless you have specific reasons to choose 32-bit, we recommend 64-bit to utilise the full capacity of your hardware. I use my laptop mostly for Eclipse, apart from regular office applications, then does it make any difference when choosing between 32bit and 64bit?

• Apache FilesMatch regexp: Can it match by the cache buster 10 digit (rails generated) following the filename?

  According to the apache FilesMatch docs: The FilesMatch directive provides for access control by filename Basically, I only want to set an expires header for resources that have a 10 digit "cache buster" id appended to the name. So, here is my attempt at such a thing in my httpd.conf <FilesMatch "(jpg|jpeg|png|gif|js|css)\?\d{10}$"> ExpiresActive On ExpiresDefault "now plus 5 minutes" </FilesMatch> And here is an example of a resource I want to match: http://localhost:3000/images/of/elvis/eating-a-bacon-sandwich.png?1306277384 Now obviously my FilesMatch regexp is not matching so I am guessing 1 of 2 things is happening. Either my regexp is wonky or the '?1231231231' cache busting part of the file is not part of what apache considers part of the filename. Can anybody confirm and/or give me a way to cache only those resources that will not persist beyond the next deploy?

• Why isn't Chrome rendering images and fonts correctly?

  I have an Acer monitor and an Intel Pentium 4 running 12.04 32-bit. Chrome renders all webpages like this: This is how CNN should look: I have Firefox installed and its images/fonts look fine. I am new to Ubuntu and comfortable with using Terminal. Beyond that, I have no idea what I'm doing. This happened all of a sudden a few weeks ago. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. • How can I use cron-apt to download and install updates between midnight and 5am?

  I have capped data which is essentially free between midnight and 5am. As a result, I would like to set Ubuntu to automatically download updates over that time. It seems that cron-apt is what I need, but the documentation and syntax is sketchy and unintuitive. Can anyone tell me how to use it to schedule downloads? It can install the updates at the same time as far as I'm concerned, but that's not such a big issue - I can run those at a later stage.

Has any formal research been done into architecture defects, and their impact on project speed, defects, and the like? • Moving from an IT department to a proper technology company

  I have been working with Java/web applications in an IT department of a retail company. As much as work goes, there is nothing much to say. Fixing couple of if/else loops, writing some simple business logic etc., is all what I have been doing. Having said that, I feel I have a good technical knowledge, and I am willing to move to companies like Microsoft/Google/Amazon etc., [I want to work in these places, because I feel I am a technical guy, and I am working in a place where most people freak out when the words like 'algorithm' are heard] I can of course prepare algorithms/computer science fundamentals etc.,(I hold a 4 year degree in computer science program) but beyond that, will my experience hold against me ? I doubt I'll even get a call from them seeing my work experience. What kind of questions(apart from the algorithm types) can I expect ?

• What kind of math should I be expecting in advanced programming?

  And I don't mean just space shooters and such, because in non-3D environments it's obvious that not much beyond elementary math is needed to implement. Most of the programming in 2D games is mostly going to involve basic arithmetic, algorithms for enemy AI and dimensional worlds, rotation, and maybe some Algebra as well depending on how you want to design. But I ask because I'm not really gifted with math at all. I get frustrated and worn out just by doing Pre-Algebra, so Algebra 2 and Calculus would likely be futile for me. I guess I'm not so "right-brained" when it comes down to pure numbers and math formulas, but the bad part is that I'm no art-expert either. What do you people here suppose I should do? Go along avoiding as much of the extremely difficult maths I can't fathom, or try to ease into more complex math as I excel at programming?

  I'm writing a 2d particle system for a game in Pygame[1]. For the particles, I have an image surface loaded from a file -- basically a white primitive drawn over a transparent background. I'd like the particle engine to emit variously colored particles, but I'm not sure how to tell Pygame to color the surface. I've looked through what passes for documentation, but I'm having trouble finding anything. [1] Yeah, I don't really like Pygame, but my course insists I write this project in Python.

• What is realism?

  Beyond the obvious something that seams real, realism in games is a hard feature to hit. In some cases, things that are completely impossible in real life are seen as realistic by gamers. For instance, in some FPS you can survive being hit by a fair amount of bullets when in real life one is enough, Newton-defying car drifts, etc. So, in some cases, reductions of life-like actions or consequences implies a bigger sense of realism. The root of this pseudo-philosophical question lies in: I am going to create a engine for battles in an online (browser-based) strategic game. Browser-based means that the battle would not be seen. And i do not know how to approach this realism issue.

  Often when I'm building my MVC 2 application using Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. On the internet, this error seems to be related to having a nested web.config in your application.   I am a bit lost, I am using futile and I am just trying to run the demo. But I keep getting UnityEngine.Vector2 does not contian a definition for "Set" in just one class, my using statments are: using System; using UnityEngine; using System.Collections; using System.Collections.Generic; When I look at the documents, I see that Set is a function http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/ScriptReference/Vector2.html I am using version 3.4.2 (in futile its happening in just the FAtlas class)

• Stuck in logon loop

  Here's the deal. I set up a computer with Ubuntu 10.04 for my grandmother. Everything worked fine. I connected it to the internet at her house today. After rebooting the computer I found that the computer would kick you back to the logon screen if you attempted to logon to her account. It worked fine logging on to my admin account, and also in Gnome's safe mode. I thought it had resolved itself, but turns out it hadn't, and now I don't have physical access to the computer, plus the remote connection I'd hoped to use only works intermittently. I need some suggestions for troubleshooting for when I'm at her house at some point next week. Ask for any more details, but I'm afraid I won't be able to provide many more until I've checked it out in person, since she is basically unable to use a computer beyond web browsing. Thanks in advance!

  I've asked a question about what audio volume to use when recording: recording audio: What is the best volume setting? In there, I learned that: I should avoid too high a volume, to prevent clipping I should avoid too low a volume, to prevent loss of resolution The question now is: What is too high a volume? What is too low? I am setting the volume via the GUI for sound config. It has an unamplified setting, a 100% setting, and volumes beyond 100%. After 100%, is there still resolution loss? How can I tell if there is clipping going on (given that my recording program is the non-GUI ffmpeg)?
