  • How to Compile Sample Code

    I'm breaking into GUI programming with android, trying to compile and analyze Lunar Lander sample program. The instructions for using Eclipse say to select "Create project from existing source" but that option doesn't exist. If I select File-New-Project I can select "Java project from Existing Ant Buildfile". Using that I've tried selecting various xml files as "Ant Buildfile" but all give me the "The file selected is not a valid Ant buildfile" error. I just want to run GUI sample projects, preferably with Eclipse. Any useful tips will be appreciated.

  • What is reading source on an ebook reader like?

    There are a few open source projects I would really like to read through the code of to understand better / improve on. The problem is, for me, reading for a long time on the computer screen is tedious. I would love to be able to read code while lounging around and on a screen that was better on my eyes. Has anyone ever tried reading code on an ebook reader? It seems like the e-ink would make it easy on the eyes, plus it would be portable, plus it wouldn't kill any trees. In other words, it sounds perfect, but before I drop a couple benjamins on an ebook reader, I'd like to hear if anyone else has tried this and how it went. It seems Scott Hanselman discussed using the Kindle to read code, but I wouldn't necessarily want a Kindle. Has anyone had a positive experience with some other device? I realize this is not directly about programming, but it relates directly to my ability to improve my skills. I think if a good portable reading device for code exists, it could help a lot of programmers.

  • Run JavaScript after a DropDownList is DataBound

    I need to trigger a JavaScript function to be called AFTER a DropDownList on my ASP.NET WebForms page is DataBound, because the SelectedIndex of this DropDownList is the parameter to the JavaScript function. I've tried this various ways, but it seems that if I do it with pure JavaScript onload by using ClientScript.RegisterStartUpScript, the control can be found (because it hasn't been assigned a clientID yet?). If I use jQuery (document).ready { } it says that the DropDownList has no selectedIndex.value. So I need some JavaScript to run AFTER the control has a value set by the DataBind. How can I accomplish this? onChanged won't work because I need the function to fire on the first page load, with no user input. DataBinding the SelectedIndex of the DropDownList doesn't cause the JavaScript onChanged event to fire.

  • Batch folder of images into grayscale using php

    Can anyone spot where I'm going wrong here. It should be creating grayscale copies of images in one folder and saving them in another folder. Could it be to do with the way im referencing the file locations.   • Modify strings in Rails?

    Hey everyone, So I'm new to Rails (teaching myself as a senior project in high school), and I'm trying to figure out how to modify these strings. Let's say someone writes the following string in a form: "you know you are a geek when" How can I automatically change it to this: "You know you are a geek when..."? I need Rails to check the case of the first letter and check for the three dots then modify the string as necessary. I've looked here, but I can't find anything that would work. Thanks a lot!

  • Requirements of an issue/bug tracker

    I've been looking at various issue/bug trackers available on the net. There are some very good ones, but I'm unable to use them as my server does not support Perl/Ruby (for example), I'm not too bothered however because I am able to write code in PHP and as such would prefer something in that language. So I've taken it upon myself to write a custom issue tracker system. As of now it's in early planning stages, and before I continue, I'd like to find out what people need from such an application. My current list of things to add include: Creating/Editing/Deleting issues - both on user and admin level Related issues (similar to that of STO) Admins will be able to create builds/milestones and version control of projects Admins will be able to assign users/groups to a project Roadmap of projects Possible SVN integration with Git? What do you think? There are a couple more things I'd like to add, but I'm sure you'll think of a better way of adding such feature. What would you like to see from an issue tracker?

    Looking in the jQuery core I found the folloiwng code convention: nth: function(elem, i, match){ return match[3] - 0 === i; }, And I was really curious about the snippet match[3] - 0 Hunting around for '-0' on google isn't too productive, and a search for 'minus zero' brings back a reference to a Bob Dylan song. So, can anyone tell me. Is this some sort of performance trick, or is there a reason for doing this rather than a parseInt or parseFloat? Thanks

    I'm trying to build an application I've downloaded which uses the SCONS "make replacement" and the Fast Light Tool Kit Gui. Exit(1) Unfortunately, on my (Gentoo Linux) system, and many others (Linux distributions) this can be quite troublesome if the package manager allows the simultaneous install of FLTK-1 and FLTK-2. Being Idealistic, I attempted to modify the SConstruct file to use fltk-config --cflags and fltk-config --ldflags (or fltk-config --libs might be better than ldflags) by adding them like so: guienv.Append(CPPPATH = os.popen('fltk-config --cflags').read()) guienv.Append(LIBPATH = os.popen('fltk-config --ldflags').read()) But this causes the test for liblo to fail!   • What are the alternatives to public fields?

    I am programming a game in java, and as the question title suggestions i am using public fields in my classes. (for the time being) From what i have seen public fields are bad and i have some understanding why. (but if someone could clarify why you should not use them, that would be appreciated) The thing is that also from what i have seen, (and it seems logical) is that using private fields, but using getters and setters to access them is also not good as it defeats the point of using private fields in the first place. So, my question is, what are the alternatives? or do i really have to use private fields with getters and setters? For reference here is one of my classes, and some of its methods.   • Disk-based caching of dynamic images in IIS 7

    I'm writing an image server which needs to handle a relatively large number of concurrent requests (~5,000). The images being served are dynamically scaled down and cropped based on per-image specifications, which are queried from a database. The number of images is rather large, so an in-memory cache isn't viable (thrashing would most definitely occur). I'm using native caching in IIS 7 to avoid hitting the ASP.NET app which generates the images on-the-fly. I've looked around, but I couldn't find a simple way to configure IIS to store the cache on-disk -- is there such an option, or would I need to roll my own? I'd rather avoid placing the generated images in a public folder, so they can be served statically, since I would prefer to invalidate the cache entries using a query parameter (last-edit time from the database,) which doesn't seem possible to reconcile with static caching. I would love to get some feedback on this!

    Hi, I am assigning a 3D array, which contains some information for a number of different loadcases. Each row in the array defines a particular loadcase (of which there are 3) and I would like to remove the loadcase (i.e. the row) if ALL the elements of the row (in 3D) are equal to zero. The code I have at the moment is: Array = zeros(3,5) % Initialise array Numloadcases = 3; Array(:,:,1) = [10 10 10 10 10; 0 0 0 0 0; 0 0 0 0 0;]; % Expand to a 3D array Array(:,:,2) = [10 10 10 10 10; 0 0 0 0 0; 0 0 0 0 0;]; Array(:,:,3) = [10 10 10 10 10; 0 0 0 0 0; 0 0 20 0 0;]; Array(:,:,4) = [10 10 10 10 10; 0 0 0 0 0; 0 0 20 0 0;]; % I.e. the second row should be removed. for i = 1:Numloadcases if sum(Array(i,:,:)) == 0; Array(i,:,:) = [] end end At the moment, the for loop I have to remove the rows causes an indexing error, as the size of the array changes in the loop.     While playing around with D 2.0 I found the following problem: Example 1: pure string[] run1() { string[] msg; msg ~= "Test"; msg ~= "this."; return msg; } This compiles and works as expected. When I try to wrap the string array in a class I find I can not get this to work: class TestPure { string[] msg; void addMsg( string s ) { msg ~= s; } }; pure TestPure run2() { TestPure t = new TestPure(); t.addMsg("Test"); t.addMsg("this."); return t; } This code will not compile because the addMsg function is impure. I can not make that function pure since it alters the TestPure object. Am i missing something? Or is this a limitation? The following does compile: pure TestPure run3() { TestPure t = new TestPure(); t.msg ~= "Test"; t.msg ~= "this."; return t; } Would the ~= operator not been implemented as a impure function of the msg array? How come the compiler does not complain about that in the run1 function?

  • Sphinx non-fulltext, integer only search

    Hello guys, I've got a few tables that literally only hold integers, no "words" and for some reason Sphinx is unable to hold this data in it's library. Just returns "0 bytes" errors for these indexes. Is it possible to do this? If so, how?   • Can you decode a mutable Bitmap from an InputStream?

    Right now I've got an Android application that: Downloads an image. Does some pre-processing to that image. Displays the image. The dilemma is that I would like this process to use less memory, so that I can afford to download a higher-resolution image. However, when I download the image now, I use BitmapFactory.decodeStream(), which has the unfortunate side effect of returning an immutable Bitmap. As a result, I'm having to create a copy of the Bitmap before I can start operating on it, which means I have to have 2x the size of the Bitmap's memory allocated (at least for a brief period of time; once the copy is complete I can recycle the original). Is there a way to decode an InputStream into a mutable Bitmap?

  • A new method of supporting FOSS?

    I have been kicking an idea around for sometime and wondered if something of it's nature hadn't already been invented. The premise is a website that integrates code management, project/team management, and micro-transactions. Donations, in and of themselves, are a sporadic, and unreliable method of supporting developers. Furthermore most free software that accepts donations is started by programmers ,be it to learn, because of a hobby, or because they saw a niche that needed to be filled. There is no method in place of of saying "hay, the FOSS community needs this kind of software, will someone develop it, and accept donations!?" Programmers should be programming, not busy begging for money. Basically the idea is people can go to the site in question, and start a project or make a request. Anyone signed up with the site can start a request. Each member account is free to support or "upvote" a project request. Requests and the associated number of votes let programmers in the community know the needs of the community. When a project is started a request for developers can be put forth. Developers have a ranking based on commits to other projects. The project founder can send invites to known Developers, or accept invites from members based on developer ranking. Once the project has at least one team-member, an objectives sheet or "draft" can be put out, listing design, goals, and features. The founding member and each team-member may contribute to this sheet. Each "milestone", or "Feature" is represented by an article. An article is any unit of a draft that can be voted on by The Project Founder, Team-members, and contributors...which brings me to the next half of this idea. --Microtransactions-- People signed up with this hypothetical website can purchase credits which then can be transfered to projects they would like to support. Anyone who transfers credits to a project is known as a contributor to that project. At anytime a Founder, or the lead team-member may submit an article, or a design (multiple articles) for consideration. All team-members, as well as the Founder, can vote once for each article freely. Contributors may vote yes or no on a number of articles (independent of any given meeting where a particular design or article is considered) equal to the number of credits they have placed into a contributors fund for that particular project. A contributors fund is a proxy between a sites credit account, and a projects credit account. It is sort of like a promise to contribute, instead of an actual contribution. Contributers may place constraints on particular articles such that if those constraints (a yes or no vote) are satisfied then a manually specified amount of credits is automatically transfered to the project account. This allows a project to develop based on the needs of those who may (in the future) financially rely on the project. --- Code commits & milestones --- When a team-member makes a commit, they may specify if it's a minor commit, a bug fix, a compatibility patch (i.e. for a new platform), or a milestone (an article voted on previously). People signed up with the website, may download the updated project and test it to see if the programmer's assertion is true about the commit. A report may then be filed on a small form, giving a one or two paragraphs, and a positive or negative confirmation of the programmer's goal for that particular commit. After all milestones for a particular draft are complete, a new draft is submitted for voting. Also funds may withdrawn by each team-member based on the proportion of commits and milestones confirmed (fulfilled the stated purpose) for each programmer. --- voting --- Members, contributor, and non-contributor, may make priority requests for particular articles of a draft. The project founder may or may not opt to fill those requests based on the volume of upvotes. A fulfilled priority request means that any team-member that makes a community-confirmed commit for an article is, when all articles for the draft are fulfilled, granted a portion of project credits in proportion to the average priority of all the articles he committed. ---- Notes --- While this is horribly prone to design-by-committee the one saving grace is that the lead team-member may place constraints on a draft such that some, or ALL articles must be voted yes. Commits may not begin until a draft satisfying said constraints is approved. What does SO think, is this idea feasible? Does anyone see major problems with this? Is there any insights, or improvements that could be made?

  • Convert any currency string to double

    I need to store multiple currencies in SQL server. I understand that SQL won't support all different types of currencies (unless I store it as a string, but I don't want to do that). My idea was to convert all the values from their currency format to a standard double and store that instead. Then just re-format based on the culture info when displaying. However, I have tried doing something like e.g. var cultureInfo = new System.Globalization.CultureInfo("en-US"); double plain = return Double.Parse("$20,000.00", cultureInfo); This doesn't ever seem to work it always throws a FormatException. Even removing the currency symbol and just trying to do this based on the number alone does the same thing. This is just an example I want to support pretty much any type of currency. Is there a standard way of stripping out currency and getting the value as a double?

  • iPhone View Switching basics.

    I am just trying to get my head around simple view switching for the iPhone and have created a simple app to try and help me understand it. I have included the code from my root controller used to switch the views. My app has a single toolbar with three buttons on it each linking to one view. Here is my code to do this but I think there most be a more efficient way to achieve this? Is there a way to find out / remove the current displayed view instead of having to do the if statements to see if either has a superclass?   • Batch Image compression tool for optimizing thousands of images

    Hi all, I'm maintaining a site that has thousands of images that have not been compressed nearly enough. The homepage weighs in at 1.5 Mb currently, and it could easily be way less that half that. I'm looking for some kind of tool that'll take a folder full of JPG pictures and will recompress them to their "optimal" compression value. Obviously, "optimal lossy compression setting" is an oxymoron, but I'm thinking maybe a tool that'll try different levels and compare the outputs to the input, and choose a "sweet spot" between size and destruction? Or even try whether PNG is a better option, many times it is, for "drawing" type stuff. Does anyone of you know any such tool? I'd have lots of fun coding one, but I bet someone already did and will save me 2 days. Alternatively, of course, anything that'll take all pictures in a folder and recompress them with a fixed quality level (say, 40) will also work, it'll just not make my inner nerd as happy, but it'll solve my problem just fine. (Ideally something that can run on Windows, ideally from the command line) Thank you!
