• Why does everybody hate SharePoint?

  Reading this topic about the most over hyped technologies I noticed that SharePoint is almost universally reviled. My experience with SharePoint (especially the most recent versions) is that it accomplishes it's core competencies smartly. Namely: Centralized document repository - get all those office documents out of email (with versioning) User-editible content creation for internal information disemination - look, an HR site with current phone numbers and the vacation policy Project collaboration - a couple clicks creates a site with a project's documents, task list, simple schedule, threaded discussion, and possibly a list of all project related emails. Very basic business automation - when you fill out the vacation form, an email is sent to HR. My experience is that SharePoint only gets really ugly when an organization tries to push it in a direction it isn't designed for. SharePoint is not a CRM, ERP, bug database or external website. SharePoint is flexible enough to serve in a pinch, but it is no replacement for a dedicated tool. (Microsoft is just as guilty of pushing SharePoint into domains it doesn't belong.) If you use SharePoint for what it's designed for, it really does work. Thoughts?

• Perth's ADF Community Event now an open invite

  Yesterday saw the next ADF Community Event in Perth, and as promised we grew from 15 to 25 attendees (which is going to cause a bit of a problem soon if we keep growing as we're going to run out of powerpoints for laptops). This bimonthly enjoyed presentations from Matthew Carrigy from the Dept of Finance WA on the ADF UI Shell, a small presentation from me about how Fusion Apps uses ADF, and a hands on based on programatically extending ADF BC to call external web services.  For Matt, his first presentation to a user group, with two live demos, all kudos to him for making it look smooth (for the record I hate live demos, I always break something) - thank you Matt! We've already lined up our speakers for the next event in November, and will be inviting yet more customers to this event.  However the event will now move to an open invite, so if you'd like your staff to attend please let me know by emailing chris DOT muir AT oracle DOT com. Alternatively I've had a fair few requests now for an "Intro to ADF" 1 day session so I'll consider this soon.  Certainly if you're interested let me know as this will help organize the event earlier rather than later.

• Configuring WS-Security with PeopleSoft Web Services

  I was speaking with a customer a few days ago about PeopleSoft Web Services.  The customer created a web service but when they went to deploy it, they had so many problems configuring ws-security, they pulled the service.  They spent several days trying to get it working but never got it working so they've put it on hold until they have time to work through the issues. Having gone through the process of configuring ws-security myself, I understand the complexity.  There is no magic 'easy' button to push.  If you are not familiar with all the moving parts like policies, certificates, public and private keys, credential stores, and so on, it can be a daunting task.  PeopleBooks documentation is good but does not offer a step-by-step example to follow.  Fear not, for those that want more help, there is a place to go. PeopleSoft released a Mobile Inventory Management application over a year ago.  It is a mobile app built with Oracle Fusion Application Development Framework (ADF) that accesses PeopleSoft content through standard web services.  Part of the installation of this app is configuring ws-security for the web services used in the application.  Appendix A of the PeopleSoft FSCM91 Mobile Inventory Management Installation Guide is called Configuring WS-Security for Mobile Inventory Management.  It is a step-by-step guide to configure ws-security between a server running Oracle Web Server Management (OWSM) and PeopleSoft Integration Broker.  Your environment might be different, but the steps will be similar, and on the PeopleSoft side, Integration Broker will remain a constant.   Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?Here is how it happens: I wanted to download a 12GB torrent.After adding the .torrent file, transmission turned into a zombie process.I tried ktorrent too.Same behavior.Finally I could download the file using µTorrent but after closing the program, it turns into a zombie as well. I tried using kill skill and pkill with different options and -9 signal but no success. In some answers in web I found out killing the parent can kill the zombie, but killing wine didn't help either. Is there another way? • Designing Content-Based ETL Process with .NET and SFDC

  As my firm makes the transition to using SFDC as our main operational system, we've spun together a couple of SFDC portals where we can post customer-specific documents to be viewed at will. As such, we've had the need for pseudo-ETL applications to be implemented that are able to extract metadata from the documents our analysts generate internally (most are industry-standard PDFs, XML, or MS Office formats) and place in networked "queue" folders. From there, our applications scoop of the queued documents and upload them to the appropriate SFDC CRM Content Library along with some select pieces of metadata. I've mostly used DbAmp to broker communication with SFDC (DbAmp is a Linked Server provider that allows you to use SQL conventions to interact with your SFDC Org data). I've been able to create [console] applications in C# that work pretty well, and they're usually structured something like this: static void Main() { // Load parameters from app.config. // Get documents from queue. var files = someInterface.GetFiles(someFilterOrRegexPattern); foreach (var file in files) { // Extract metadata from the file. // Validate some attributes of the file; add any validation errors to an in-memory // structure (e.g. List<ValidationErrors>). if (isValid) { // Upload using some wrapper for an ORM an someInterface.Upload(meta.Param1, meta.Param2, ...); } else { // Bounce the file } } // Report any validation errors (via message bus or SMTP or some such). } And that's pretty much it. Most of the time I wrap all these operations in a "Worker" class that takes the needed interfaces as constructor parameters. This approach has worked reasonably well, but I just get this feeling in my gut that there's something awful about it and would love some feedback. Is writing an ETL process as a C# Console app a bad idea? I'm also wondering if there are some design patterns that would be useful in this scenario that I'm clearly overlooking. Thanks in advance!

  As I already blogged a while back, native code has been on the lips of many since TechEd 2011. Microsoft seems very committed to actually putting the language to use again after all these years of radio silence. Regarding this I urge you all guys to watch this video interview of Mohsen Agsen about C++ Today and Tomorrow http://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Going+Deep/Mohsen-Agsen-C-Today-and-Tomorrow on Channel 9. What I find very inspiring about this interview is that Microsoft has a number of internal projects where they are using C++ and they really understand the value of C++ as a highly performant programming language. He also talks about combining managed code, scripted code and native code to get the most out of each of them. This is something that we are doing a lot in the game industry, since we recognize the need for performant platform code with an easy to write scripting layer on top of that. This is something I intend to blog about in the near future, so stay tuned! Another great thing that I bumped into recently is C++ AMP that was announced at this year’s AMD Fusion Developer Summit. I would recommend watching Herb Sutter’s keynote on the subject at http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/AFDS-Keynote-Herb-Sutter-Heterogeneous-Computing-and-C-AMP.

The changes are neither persisted nor the Mbean value is also left unmodified.... Please also be aware of the below changes in SSL implementation in 12c version 1. Certicom has been removed from WebLogic Server 12.1.1 and is no longer supported. 2. JSSE is the only SSL implementation that is supported in WebLogic Server 12.1.1. The following configuration changes have been made to be consistent with this support: The default for JSSEEnabled has been changed to true. Oracle recommends that you keep this value set to true. If JSSEEnabled is set to false, it will be ignored. That is, the MBean value will not be changed either in memory or the persisted config.xml file.
