    [Cross-Posting from ServerFault] I am in a development environment, and our test Oracle 9i server has been misbehaving for a few days now. What happens is that we have our JDBC connections disconnecting after a few successful connections. We got this box set up by our IT department and handed over to. It is 'our problem', so options like 'ask you DBA' isn't going to help me. :( Our server is set up with 3 plain databases (one is the main dev db, the other is the 'experimental' dev db). We use the Oracle 10 ojdbc14.jar thin JDBC driver (because of some bug in the version 9 of the driver). We're using Hibernate to talk to the DB. The only thing that I can see that changed is that we now have more users connecting to the server. Instead of one developer, we now have 3. With the Hibernate connection pools, I'm thinking that maybe we're hitting some limit? Anyone has any idea what's going on? My problem is, I can't find any complete documentation about how to deploy such a mbean. I'm getting different exceptions, depending on my configuration. I'm aware of this question but it doesn't help me. The answer I gave worked just for a short time, after that I got some other exceptions.   • Can I use `UnlockCommercialFeatures` for developing Java applications without a commercial license?

    As of Java 7 Update 40, Oracle is now including Java Mission Control in the JDK. Being always interested in a new profiling tool, I decided to check it out. However, trying to start Flight Recorder against a process, I get the following error, Now I'm getting cold feet about adding the JVM option -XX:+UnlockCommercialFeatures. I would only use this for profiling in development and not in production. From the article linked above, JMC is available under the Oracle Binary Code License for Java. The license allows you to use JMC for free during development and testing, though a different (paid for) licence is required for production use. I'm still leery about this. From Java SE Products, Flight Recorder certainly is a commercial feature; however, I find it very confusing that it's now included in the standard JDK release. Anyone else have a read on this?   • Using Lazy<T> and abstract wrapper class to lazy-load complex system parameters

    .NET Framework 4.0 introduced new class called Lazy<T> and I wrote blog post about it: .Net Framework 4.0: Using System.Lazy<T>. One thing is annoying for me – we have to keep lazy loaded value and its value loader as separate things. In this posting I will introduce you my Lazy<T> wrapper for complex to get system parameters that uses template method to keep lazy value loader in parameter class. Problem with original implementation Here’s the sample code that shows you how Lazy<T> is usually used. This is just sample code, don’t focus on the fact that this is dummy console application. class Program {     static void Main(string[] args)     {         var temperature = new Lazy<int>(LoadMinimalTemperature);           Console.WriteLine("Minimal room temperature: " + temperature.Value);         Console.ReadLine();     }       protected static int LoadMinimalTemperature()     {         var returnValue = 0;           // Do complex stuff here           return true;     } } The problem is that our class with many lazy loaded properties will grow messy if it has all value loading code inside it. This code may be complex for more than one parameter and in this case it is better to use separate class for this parameter. Defining base class for parameters As a first step I will define base class for all lazy-loaded parameters. This class is wrapper around Lazy<T> and it also offers one template method that parameter classes have to override to provide loaded data. public abstract class LazyParameter<T> {     private Lazy<T> _lazyParam;       public LazyParameter()     {         _lazyParam = new Lazy<T>(Load);     }       protected abstract T Load();       public T Value     {         get { return _lazyParam.Value; }     } } It is also possible to extend Lazy<T> but I don’t prefer to do it as Lazy<T> has six constructors we have to take care of. We ended up with generic base class for parameters that you can also use as base for other similar classes (you have to find better name to base class in this case).

  • What have my fellow Delphi programmers done to make Eclipse/Java more like Delphi?

    I am a veteran Delphi programmer working on my first real Android app. I am using Eclipse and Java as my development environment. The thing I miss the most of course is Delphi's VCL components and the associated IDE tools for design-time editing and code creation. Fortunately I am finding Eclipse to be one hell of an IDE with it's lush context sensitive help, deep auto-complete and code wizard facilities, and other niceties. This is a huge double treat since it is free. However, here is an example of something in the Eclipse/Java environment that will give a Delphi programmer pause. I will use the simple case of adding an "on-click" code stub for an OK button. DELPHI Drop button on a form Double-click button on form and fill in the code that will fire when the button is clicked ECLIPSE Drop button on layout in the graphical XML file editor Add the View.OnClickListener interface to the containing class's "implements" list if not there already. (Command+1 on Macs, Ctrl + 1 on PCs I believe). Use Eclipse to automatically add the code stub for unimplemented methods needed to support the View.OnClickListener interface, thus creating the event handler function stub. Find the stub and fill it in. However, if you have more than one possible click event source then you will need to inspect the View parameter to see which View element triggered the OnClick() event, thus requiring a case statement to handle multiple click event sources. NOTE: I am relatively new to Eclipse/Java so if there is a much easier way of doing this please let me know. Now that work flow isn't all that terrible, but again, that's just the simplest of use cases. Ratchet up the amount of extra work and thinking for a more complex component (aka widget) and the large number of properties/events it might have. It won't be long before you miss dearly the Delphi intelligent property editor and other designers. Eclipse tries to cover this ground by having an extensive list of properties in the menu that pops up when you right-click over a component/widget in the XML graphical layout editor. That's a huge and welcome assist but it's just not even close to the convenience of the Delphi IDE. Let me be very clear. I absolutely am not ranting nor do I want to start a Delphi vs. Java ideology discussion. Android/Eclipse/Java is what it is and there is a lot that impresses me. What I want to know is what other Delphi programmers that made the switch to the Eclipse/Java IDE have done to make things more Delphi like, and not just to make component/widget event code creation easier but any programming task.     What Java web framework out there best supports a role of "web UI designer", that is, lets you: Use popular web design tools (xhtml validators, css editors, what have you) on your views/pages View changes without running on a server Rapidly prototype different UI options Supports a (somewhatly) clean separation between "developer" and "designer" (terminology intentionally vague) We, like many others, have found these capabilities sorely lacking in our large, legacy Struts 1.x apps that use lots of JSP fragments and includes. We've decided to port our apps to a JSR-168/268 portal environment, but we have not decided on what Java web framework will power the portlets. We're open to any kind (action-based, component-based, etc) and a key criterion is how well it supports the role described above. I'm intrigued by Tapestry which claims that its views are XHTML compliant pages (that simply have extra Tapestry-specific attributes added onto them to be processed at runtime). This sounds like it would play well with a web ui designer's toolkit. However, I'd like to know if this is what actually happens in the real world, or if compromises are necessary. Of course, if there's something much better than Tapestry, I'd love to hear about it!

  • As a C# developer, would you learn Java to develop for Android or use MonoDroid instead?

    I'd consider myself pretty well versed in C#. It's my language of choice at the moment, and it's where basically all my professional experience lies. Still, I'm puzzled by the existence of the MonoDroid project. My understanding has always been that C# and Java are very close. Like, if you know one, you can learn the other really quickly. So, as I've considered developing my first Android app, I just assumed I would familiarize myself with Java enough to get started and then just sort of learn as I go. Wouldn't this make more sense than using MonoDroid, which is likely to be less feature-rich than the Java Android SDK, and requires learning its own API (albeit a .NET API) anyway? I just feel like it would be better to learn a new language (and an extremely popular one at that) and get some experience in it—when it's so close to what you already know anyway—rather than stick with a technology you're experienced with, without gaining any more valuable skills. Maybe I'm grossly misrepresenting the average potential MonoDroid user. Maybe it's more for people who are experienced in Java and .NET and just prefer .NET. Or maybe (in fact it's likely) there are other factors I just haven't considered. I'm just wondering, why would you use MonoDroid instead of just developing for Android using Java?

Basically I Go from one list activity to another and pass the text from a list item through the intent of the activity to the new list view, then retrieve that text in the new list activity and then preform a http request based on value of that list item.   • ZipArchive php Class - Does it support all servers?

    Ok, just wondering on the versions of PHP that this class is built into. And if they are built into all platforms (OS's). I'm wanting an approach to search through a zip file and place files using file_put_contents in different filepaths within the webroot. In any case, I'm familiar with how to do this with the ZipArchive class, but I'm wondering if using this class would be a good solution and support MOST, if not ALL servers?? I mean, I'd rather not use a method that requires the Server to have it installed. I'm looking for a solution to this that will support at least MOST servers without having to install the class... Thanks :) Also, I'd like to support opening tar.gz and/or .tgz files if possible, but I don't think the ZipArchive class supports this, but perhaps a different built-in php class does??

Although I have all this installed when in Chrome I go to a website which needs jre it can't find it. How can I fix it ?

The reason is obvious: they share some common properties and methods (a basic implementation of some elements of an interface actually), and I want to implement them only once. I have done this by defining my abstract base class: public abstract class ViewBase : UserControl, ISomeInterface Then I went to implement one of my views, as usual, with the designer: public partial class SpecialView : UserControl //all OK Up to here all is fine. Now I replace the derivation of my SpecialView class with the abstract base class: public partial class SpecialView : ViewBase //disrupts the designer Now, the designer in Visual Studio 2008 won't work anymore, stating: The designer must create an instance of type 'ViewBase' but it cannot because the type is declared as abstract. How can I circumvent this? I just do not want to have the same code copied for all those views. Info: there is a question question with virtual methods, instead of abstract classes, but there is no suitable solution for me.

    I am trying to get and destroy an external process I've created via ProcessBuilder in my FXML application close, but it's not working. This is based on the helpful advice Sergey Grinev gave me here. I have tried running with/without the "// myController.setApp(this);" and with "// super.stop();" at top of subclass and at bottom (see commented out/in for that line in MyApp), but no combination works. This probably isn't related to FXML or JavaFX, though I imagine this is a common pattern for developing apps on JavaFX. I suppose I'm asking for a Java best practice for closing dependent processes in a UI-based app like this one (in this case: FXML / JavaFX based), where there is a controller class and an application class. Can you explain what I'm doing wrong? Or better: advise what I should be doing instead? Thanks.   • Should I use XNA (C#) or Java to create a basic game engine?

    My project is to design and build a game engine (in just about 3 months). I've been looking at two options for this game engine, either make it with XNA (and C#) or Java. My experience with XNA/C# is zero to none, however I have been a Java programmer for around 4 years. I've had a little play around with both but I am still not sure what would be best to use (i.e. what would turn out better with my experience). XNA is obviously for making games and I would presume making a game engine would be slightly easier in this - however that said, there are numerous libraries available in Java that could be used for a game engine (such as lwjgl). What would be my best option and ideally produce the best results out of both XNA or Java? For your information, the game engine at the moment is a 2D one and is not too advanced (although I plan to extend it in the future). Thanks in advance for all answers!
