• installing linux on a mac

  Hi, i have mac pro and i wanted to install debian on it but i guess i have problem now. i have windows 7 installed on bootcamp partition, before i started installing linux, i created a partition size of 75 gb then i restarted mac and boot it from debian dvd. then i divided that 75 gb to 2 partitions, one is 600 mb freespace other is ext3 formatted. i installed debian (but it just used 1 dvd even though i got 5 dvd downloaded) then mac restarted. but now i cannot even see windows on bootlist. it just let me boot in mac os x now. how can i fix this? thanks

• After logging out of SSH, screen sessions disappear on Arch Linux

  On Arch Linux (I'm on a single dedicated server, where my domain name points to only one IP), when I SSH into a user (say, for example, user mc), and then do screen -S test (or -dmS, the resulting issue is the same), run a command, and then detach from it, then exit out of my SSH session, and log back in, the screen session disappears. screen -ls returns No Sockets found in /run/screens/S-mc. The only way I can reattach to my sessions is if I never logged out of my SSH. How do I fix this? I do have read/write access in /run/screens/S-mc I detach from screen sessions with Ctrl-A,D disown -a && exit gives me the same problem shopt huponexit returns "huponexit off" There is no ~/.logout, and ~/.bash_logout is empty, with 3 lines of comments, telling me it's the ~/.bash_logout file ls -l /usr/bin | grep screen returns lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Oct 31 2012 screen -> screen-4.0.3 -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 363672 Oct 31 2012 screen-4.0.3

• Linux software raid robustness for raid1 vs other raid levels

  I have a raid5 running and now also a raid1 that I set up yesterday. Since raid5 calculates parity it should be able to catch silent data corruption on one disk. However for raid1 the disks are just mirrors. The more I think about it I figure that raid1 is actually quite risky. Sure it will save me from a disk failure but i might not be as good when it comes to protecting the data on disk (who is actually more important for me). How does Linux software raid actually store raid1 type data on disk? How does it know what spindle is giving corrupt data (if the disk(subsystem) is not reporting any errors) If raid1 really is not giving me data protection but rather disk protection is there some tricks I can do with mdadm to create a two disk "raid5 like" setup? e.g. loose capacity but still keep redundancy also for data!?

• Determine logged on user on Windows computer from Linux

  How can I determine who is logged on to a remote Windows XP computer from Linux? I do not have administrator access on the domain or on the remote computer. I can do it from a separate Windows computer using PsLoggedOn -L \\computer from PsTools I've tried using nmblookup -A remotecomputer, but I only see entries for the computer and the domain, not a <03> entry for the user. I've also tried running PsLoggedOn under wine; I get an error: Connecting to Registry of \\computer.company.com... fixme:reg:RegConnectRegistryW Connect to L"computer.company.com" is not supported. I started looking into winexe, but it looks like I would need administrative rights on the remote computer to get it working.

• How to stop a Linux LVM volume group?

  I am currently dealing with a multiple disk failure on a Linux LVM Volume Group that is backed up by a RAID-5 md device. One disk has been taken out completely and another one is showing a limited number of corrupt sectors, due to what seems to have been a misbehaving power supply. The problem is that once an I/O error hits, md takes the array down, since it does not have enough devices for it to be operational. Where md the only one involved, I could mdadm --stop the array and then recreate it to get all devices active again. Unfortunately, the array is a PV in an LVM volume group and I cannot seem to get the kernel to release it. vgchange -an does not seem to do anything, bar spew out a couple of I/O errors. I am obviously missing something, but how in the name of -insert-favorite-deity- do I get LVM to release the underlying PV without rebooting the server?

• Linking to lua libraries w/ codeblocks on linux

  After I downloaded the source for lua, I followed the install instructions, doing... make linux install make generic install I've also done the make test and it passes, printing out Hello World, from Lua 5.1. However, I can't link to the lua libraries in CodeBlocks. I know where lualib.a is (usr/local/lib) which I set in my Search Directories for the linker. I still get error messages like... undefined reference to lua_isstring Am I missing something critical here? P.S. I had this running on Windows via Visual Studio.

  Hi, I have about 20 linux servers which I need to document the configuration of. I do not mean the detailed configuration of services, but rather user accounts, databases, databases accounts, ip addresses, physical location, SSH port etc. etc. I know all this data is stored in config files, but I want to centralize it all. I am considering just creating a spreadsheet to record this data, but was wondering if there is something better (perhaps a small php/mysql app) which would be more structured and complete than a hacked together spreadsheet. What do you use?

  Hi, I'm trying to determine the CPU usage of a program by looking at the output from Top in Linux. I understand that %us means userspace and %sy means system/kernel etc. But say I see 100%us. Does this mean that the CPU is really only doing useful work? What if a CPU is tied up waiting for resources that are not avaliable, or cache misses, would it also show up in the %us column, or any other column? Thank you.

  Hi, I currently use KeePassX to manage my passwords on my Linux (Xubuntu) machine. It's nice to have all the passwords encrypted, but sometimes I'd like to be able to tell a password when I'm on the run. Therefore I'm looking for a solution which I can synchronize with my phone. I have a Nokia N82 which is a Symbian OS v9.2 based phone for the S60 3rd Edition platform with Feature Pack 1. I like an open source solution if it's possible. In case it isn't I wouldn't mind paying for a good solution. If Windows may be added to the synchronization mix it's nice, but it's absolutely not a primary requirement (I don't even have any computer running Windows).

  I have an office with a router and a remote server (Linux - Ubuntu 10.10). Both locations need to connect to a data supplier through a VPN. The VPN is an IPSEC gateway. I was able to configure my Linksys rv42 router to create a VPN connection successfully and now I need to do the same for Linux server. I have been messing around with this for too long. First I tried OpenVPN, but that is SSL and not IPSEC. Then I tried Shrew. I think I have the settings correct but I haven't been able to create the connection. It maybe that I have to use something else like a direct IPSEC config or something like that. If someone knows of a way to turn the following settings that I have been given below into a working IPSEC VPN connection I would be very grateful. • How to discern video details from Linux Live CD

  I was having trouble getting X.Org to work with the video card in a recently aquired laptop, so I decided to try to probe around the configuration of a Linux Live CD to figure out how to set up my kernel. I chose the Sabayon 5.0 Live DVD because it was the only one that I could find that was the same or newer than the 2.6.32 kernel I have installed on the laptop right now. Of course, the DVD booted right into GNOME without issue, unlike the hangs and crashes that I had been getting. So, I want to figure out what kernel driver this Live DVD is currently using, but I don't know how to. hwinfo doesn't shed any light on the matter, and lspci -vnn doesn't list a driver for my video device, though both methods correctly identify that I have an Intel 855GM video processor. How can I find out this information?

• Arch linux ati graphics crash after grub install

  Ok, so I've had an arch linux w/ gnome 3 installed for a while now. And a while ago I installed ubuntu as another partition, I think to fix an issue that cause arch to fail. So, it was all working fine, but then I went and reinstalled grub 1 on the arch partition; Ubuntu had overwritten it on the install. Then when I tried to boot into arch it booted, but the graphics wasn't working correctly: gdm wouldn't even show, and there were weird colors instead. So, I uninstalled xf86-video-ati and then installed xf86-video-vesa. That made gdm run in fallback mode and I was able to boot to gnome 3 fallback mode (or whatever it's called). But I can't seem to get the graphics working correctly.

Limiting bandwidth has been discussed before, e.g. here, but I can't find any posts which address limiting both bandwidth and latency. I can get either high latency or low bandwidth using tc. But I haven't been able to combine these into a single connection.   I am doing web development mostly in ubuntu. Sometimes i need to go into windows to do other administrative work. Now i am ignorant about file systems. I cannot tell the difference between NTFS and FAT32. My eyes just glaze over the wikipedia articles. All I know is i have been using this 320 Gb portable USB harddisk to save files when I am in ubuntu and when I am in windows. Now i got a situation where sometimes the windows 7 cannot detect the harddisk. I believe it has to do with the file system issue. Or my harddisk is coming apart. To make it easy to backup my files in a portable USB harddisk regardless in ubuntu or windows, please advise me. That means i can go from from linux/ubuntu to portable harddisk read/write files from windows 7 to portable harddisk read/write files the same files. Thank you.

  I'm a big fan of ZFS on FreeBSD (I've been using it on my home server since before it got stable; bleeding edge, baby!) and I'd like to try out btrfs to see how that's evolving. Since it's still largely in development, none of the usual mainstream distros have btrfs as an option. I haven't used Linux in a bunch of years, so I don't really know what my best options are for giving btrfs a try.   I read the manual page of the "mount" command, at it reads as below: All files accessible in a Unix system are arranged in one big tree, the file hierarchy, rooted at /. These files can be spread out over several devices. The mount command serves to attach the file system found on some device to the big file tree. My questions are: Where is this "big tree" located? Suppose I have 2 disks, if I mount them onto some point in the "big tree", does linux place some "special marks" in the mount point to indicate that these 2 "mount directories" are indeed seperate disks?

  I have to install Linux kernel version 2.5.25.14 on a RHEL 5.4 server because of drive compatibility issues. I follow the RedHat "Building a Custom Kernel" instructions running the following: $ make mrproper $ make xconfig $ make clean $ make bzImage $ make modules $ make modules_install $ make install But I get a bunch of warnings like this: WARNING: No module ehci-hcd found for kernel 2.6.25.24, continuing anyway When I try to boot this kernel it is unable to mount the hard drive, and kernel panics on startup. As far as I can tell I'm using a standard configuration (I just accept the defaults and save a .config file). Is there something I'm missing? Thanks.

  Suppose you're distributing a program to run on Linux, call it Foo, and the program executable is called foo.exe (because it's a CLR program so it runs under Mono) and it needs a couple of DLLs in the same directory and maybe a later version might need some data files that it reads on startup and whatever, so relocating it to a global bin directory is a bit of hassle and it really prefers to remain in its original directory... But the user would prefer to invoke the program by typing foo instead of mono /path/to/foo.exe. What's the best/most usual way to provide such a short command? Can/should an install script/makefile create a one line script called foo that invokes the full path, and put the one line script in a global bin directory? If so, what should be the target bin directory, and are there any directions about exactly how to do this? Or is there a preferred alternative?
