  • 12.04 upgrade broke grub? (not wubi related)

    - by kaare
I just updated from 11.10 to 12.04, with no major problems (it took a while to get past a request to restart ssh, mysql and some other services, but I did no fiddling by myself, everything was done by the installer). However, after restarting, grub can't do anything. Picking the new linux installation (first entry), I just get error: no such partition error: no such partition error: no such partition and picking the recovery-version just gives 5 lines instead of 3. I have windows 7 installed on a different drive, and can run it by booting from that drive instead. Picking it from the grub menu gives the same error as above (can't remember how many lines, though). I'll be honest and say that I don't remember if win 7 could be booted from grub before the update, though. In short, nothing on the grub menu works. any solutions? The grub menu changed appearance - before it was on a purple background, small letters, now it's white-on-black, big letters, looking very basic. The original installation was from a usb-drive, and I hadn't heard about wubi until I started googling this problem, so I doubt there's any connection. I really hope there are some grub-savvy people out there :) EDIT: ok. so, I made a bootable usb, and am running from that right now. when I ran the bootinfoscript, it warned me that "gawk" could not be found, using "busybox awk" instead. This may lead to unreliable results. just so you know. • CDN CNAMEs not resolving to customer origin

    - by Donald Jenkins
I have set up an Edgecast CDN to mirror all my static content. Because I use the root of my domain (donaldjenkins.com) to host my main site—using Google Analytics which sets cookies—I've stored the corresponding static files in a separate cookieless domain (donaldjenkins.info) which is used only for this purpose. I've set it up (using this guide for general guidance), with the following structure, based on a combination of customer origin and CDN origin to make the most of the chosen short domain name and provide meaningful URLs: http://donaldjenkins.info:80 is set as the customer origin for the content stored in the CDN at directory http://wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net/8062E0/donaldjenkins.info; I've then set up various subdomains of a separate domain, the conveniently-named cdn.dj, as CDN-origin Edge CNAMEs for each of the corresponding static content types: js.cdn.dj points to the origin directory http://wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net/0062E0/donaldjenkins.info/js; css.cdn.dj points to the origin directory http://wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net/0062E0/donaldjenkins.info/css; images.cdn.dj points to the origin directory http://wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net/0062E0/donaldjenkins.info/images and so on. This results in some pretty nice, short, clear URLs. The DNS zone file for cdn.dj (yes, it's a real domain name registered in Djibouti) is set properly: cdn.dj 43200 IN A 205.186.157.162 css.cdn.dj 43200 IN CNAME wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net. images.cdn.dj 43200 IN CNAME wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net. js.cdn.dj 43200 IN CNAME wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net. The DNS resolves to the Edgecast URL: $ host js.cdn.dj js.cdn.dj is an alias for wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net. wac.62E0.edgecastcdn.net is an alias for gs1.wac.edgecastcdn.net. gs1.wac.edgecastcdn.net has address 93.184.220.20 But whenever I try to fetch a file in any of the directories to which the CNAME assets map, I get a 404: $ curl http://js.cdn.dj/combined.js <?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <title>404 - Not Found</title> </head> <body> <h1>404 - Not Found</h1> </body> </html> despite the fact that the corresponding customer origin file exists: $ curl http://donaldjenkins.info/js/combined.js fetches the content of the combined.js file. Yet it's been more than enough time for the DNS to propagate since I set up the CDN. There's obviously some glaring mistake in the above-described setup, and I'm a bit of a novice with CDNs—but any suggestions would be gratefully received.

  • Ask the Readers: Backing Your Files Up – Local Storage versus the Cloud

    - by Asian Angel
Backing up important files is something that all of us should do on a regular basis, but may not have given as much thought to as we should. This week we would like to know if you use local storage, cloud storage, or a combination of both to back your files up. Photo by camknows. For some people local storage media may be the most convenient and/or affordable way to back up their files. Having those files stored on media under your control can also provide a sense of security and peace of mind. But storing your files locally may also have drawbacks if something happens to your storage media. So how do you know whether the benefits outweigh the disadvantages or not? Here are some possible pros and cons that may affect your decision to use local storage to back up your files: Local Storage Pros You are in control of your data Your files are portable and can go with you when needed if using external or flash drives Files are accessible without an internet connection You can easily add more storage capacity as needed (additional drives, etc.) Cons You need to arrange room for your storage media (if you have multiple externals drives, etc.) Possible hardware failure No access to your files if you forget to bring your storage media with you or it is too bulky to bring along Theft and/or loss of home with all contents due to circumstances like fire If you are someone who is always on the go and needs to travel as lightly as possible, cloud storage may be the perfect way for you to back up and access your files. Perhaps your laptop has a hard-drive failure or gets stolen…unhappy events to be sure, but you will still have a copy of your files available. Perhaps a company wants to make sure their records, files, and other information are backed up off site in case of a major hardware or system failure…expensive and/or frustrating to fix if it happens, but once again there is a nice backup ready to go once things are fixed. As with local storage, here are some possible pros and cons that may influence your choice of cloud storage to back up your files: Cloud Storage Pros No need to carry around flash or bulky external drives All of your files are accessible wherever there is an internet connection No need to deal with local storage media (or its’ upkeep) Your files are still safe if your home is broken into or other unfortunate circumstances occur Cons Your files and data are not 100% under your control Possible hardware failure or loss of files on the part of your cloud storage provider (this could include a disgruntled employee wreaking havoc) No access to your files if you do not have an internet connection The cloud storage provider may eventually shutdown due to financial hardship or other unforeseen circumstances The possibility of your files and data being stolen by hackers due to a security breach on the part of your cloud storage provider You may also prefer to try and cover all of the possibilities by using both local and cloud storage to back up your files. If something happens to one, you always have the other to fall back on. Need access to those files at or away from home? As long as you have access to either your storage media or an internet connection, you are good to go. Maybe you are getting ready to choose a backup solution but are not sure which one would work better for you. Here is your chance to ask your fellow HTG readers which one they would recommend. • Storing user info in Session using an Object vs. normal variables

    - by justinl
I'm in the process of implementing a user authentication system for my website. I'm using an open source library that maintains user information by creating a User object and storing that object inside my php SESSION variable. Is this the best way to store and access that information? I find it a bit of a hassle to access the user variables because I have to create an object to access them first: $userObj = $_SESSION['userObject']; $userObj->userId; instead of just accessing the user id like this how I would usually store the user ID: $_SESSION['userId']; Is there an advantage to storing a bunch of user data as an object instead of just storing them as individual SESSION variables? ps - The library also seems to store a handful of variables inside the user object (id, username, date joined, email, last user db query) but I really don't care to have all that information stored in my session. I only really want to keep the user id and username.

  • Report Builder 2.0 : How to get the correct timezone info.

    - by Veeravendhan
I am developing report using SQL Report Builder 2.0, In this I am passing the timezone offset value as a parameter (-04:00). Using "TimeZoneInfo" I am getting all the timezones available from the system. But I am checking the timezone with the offset value, so from the list available I can only get the first timezone object. Is there any other ways to get a specific TimezoneInfo from the system. Thanks, Veera

    - by Fábio Antunes
Hello guys. I think it isn't possible just using PHP, but just to be sure. Is it possible for PHP to know if the user is accessing the web from behind a Router? And if yes, how can i get some information about that router, like: Router Name, Brand, Serial Number, ... Users connected in the same network. Can PHP also find the Local IP Address for the visitor in that Network? A few simple questions. To which i haven't found a solid answer, and i tough that some PHP genius could tell me. And teach me. Thanks for your help.

  • ubuntu automount: only mounting drives as root?

    - by glisignoli
I'm sharing the /mount dir with smb so users on my network can access use drives added to my linux box. Users are able to read files but not write, modify or delete files or directories. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 server edition with halevt installed for usb auto mounting. Afaik halevt is automounting the drives to /media/ but the drives are showing up as: drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 20480 2010-12-29 20:40 disk drwxrwxr-x 1 root root 24576 2010-12-21 17:20 Sparta mount gives me: /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw) /dev/sdb1 on /media/disk type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) /dev/sdc1 on /media/Sparta type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,sync,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) When I umount the drives, the folders /media/disk and /media/Sparta are both removed. I tried changing the permissions with chown to nobody:nogroup but it doesn't work (which I assume is because they are ntfs drives).

  • Ubuntu confuses my partitions

    - by Diego
I have 3 relevant partitions split between 2 disks, sda2: Windows 1 partition sda3: Ubuntu partition sdb1: Data partition I was using pysdm to add a label to my partitions and somehow I seem to have screwed up my installation. Now, every time I access the Data partition mounted in /media/Data I see the files in my Windows partition, and viceversa. I've tried unmounting and remounting correctly to no avail, it seems that wherever I mount sda2, if I access that folder I get the files in sdb1, and viceversa. Anyone know what may have happened and how to solve this? • Rails - Logic for finding info from a :has_many :through needed!

    - by Jty.tan
I have 3 relevant tables. User, Orders, and Viewables The idea is that each User has got many Orders, but at the same time, each User can View specific other Orders that belong to other Users. So Viewables has the attributes of user_id and order_id. Orders has a :has_many :Users, :through => :viewables Is it possible to do a find through an Order's view? So something like @viewable_orders = Orders.find(:all, :conditions = ["Viewable.user_id=?",1]) To get a list of Orders which are viewable by user_id=1. (This doesn't work, else I won't be asking. :( ) The idea being that I can do something like a sidebar where the current user (the logged-in one) can view a list of other people's orders that he can view. For example Three other Users who have some Orders that he can view should be eventually displayed like this: Jack (2) Basic Order (registry_id: 1) New Order (registry_id: 29) Amy (4) Short Order (registry_id: 12) Jill (5) Hardware Order (14) Pink Order (17) Software Order (76) (The number in brackets are the respective user_id or registry_id) So to find the list of all of the orders that the current user can find (assuming user_id of the current user is 1), would be found by doing @viewable_orders = Viewable.find(:all, :conditions => ["user_id=?", 1]) And that would give me the collection of the above 6 registries. Now, the easiest way to do this, is for me to just have a list of + Jill's Hardware Order + Jill's Pink Order + Amy's Short Order + etc But that gets ugly for long lists. Thanks!

  • How can I programmatically obtain the company info used to digitally sign an assembly in .NET?

    - by chaiguy
As a means of simple security, I was previously checking the digital signature of a downloaded update package for my program against its public key to ensure that it originated from me. However, as I'm using cheap code signing certs (Tucows), I am unable to renew an existing cert and therefore the keys change every time I need to renew. Therefore, a more reliable means would be to verify the organization information embedded in the signed assembly (which is displayed in the UAC dialog) against my well-known organization string, as this will continue to be the same. Does anyone know how to obtain this information from a digitally-signed assembly?

  • OpenGL ES clarifying question regarding FBOs -- sorry can't find this info anywhere else?

    - by DevDevDev
If I instantiate an FBO without binding a rendering buffer or a texture to it, what happens when I draw to it, nothing? Do I need to associate a rendering target (renderbuffer or texture) to have an FBO do anything? What I'm trying to do is precache some buffers and then merge them later, but that doesn't seem to work at all. Ideally I'd like to do something like glBindFramebufferOES(GL_FRAMEBUFFER_OES, fbo1); // Draw some stuff to fbo1 glBindFramebufferOES(GL_FRAMEBUFFER_OES, fbo2); // Draw some stuff to fbo2 // ... // ... // glRenderFbo(fbo1); -- Not a func // Set blending, etc. etc. // glRenderFbo(fbo2); -- Not a func

  • NTFS partitions mount as root instead of user as set in /etc/fstab

    - by G1bs0n
I recently upgraded a server to Ubuntu 12.04 with a fresh install and my NTFS partitions won't mount as user at boot but I can mount them as user manually from the console with $ sudo mount -a. Using ntfsfix reports no problems and chkdisk sees nothing wrong under Windows 7. Are the drives not ready to be mounted at boot and default to root instead of user for some reason? Here is my /etc/fstab: UUID=E4E6B30CE6B2DDCC /media/Bowles ntfs-3g defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=022 0 0 UUID=A040C42340C3FDD2 /media/Burroughs ntfs-3g defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=022 0 0 UUID=EA022C73022C46C3 /media/DoctorGonzo ntfs-3g defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=022 0 0 UUID=BA425A384259FA19 /media/Geist ntfs-3g defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=022 0 0 UUID=E87CFAE57CFAAE06 /media/DouglasAdams ntfs-3g defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=022 0 0 Here is the output of ls -l after boot: drwxr-xr-x 1 xbmc xbmc 4096 Oct 31 21:46 Bowles drwxrwxr-x 1 root users 8192 Oct 31 21:46 Burroughs drwxrwxr-x 1 root users 4096 Oct 28 21:45 DoctorGonzo drwxrwxr-x 1 root users 12288 Oct 31 19:56 DouglasAdams drwxrwxr-x 1 root users 4096 Nov 3 01:03 Geist If I unmount and mount again with $ sudo mount -a from console, the output of ls -l: drwxr-xr-x 1 xbmc xbmc 4096 Oct 31 21:46 Bowles drwxr-xr-x 1 xbmc xbmc 8192 Oct 31 21:46 Burroughs drwxr-xr-x 1 xbmc xbmc 4096 Oct 28 21:45 DoctorGonzo drwxr-xr-x 1 xbmc xbmc 12288 Oct 31 19:56 DouglasAdams drwxr-xr-x 1 xbmc xbmc 4096 Nov 3 01:03 Geist Update I was fooling myself, I had a custom udev rule set up to auto-mount file systems by label for USB drives, borrowed from here, but didn't update the rule to accommodate for my additional hard drives. Updating the rule to auto-mount only drives after /dev/sde solved my problem. Thank you again for your reply cartoonist.

  • Jboss logging issue

    - by balaji
I'm Working as deployer and server administrator. We use Jboss 4.0x AS to deploy our applications. The issue I'm facing is, Whenever we redeploy/restart the server, server.log is getting created but after sometime the logging goes off. Yes it is not at all updating the server.log file. Due to this, we could not trace the other critical issues we have. Actually we have two separate nodes and we do deploy/restarting the server separately on two nodes. We are facing the issue in both of our test and production environment. I could not trace out where exactly the issue is. Could you please help me in resolving the issue? If we have any other issues, we can check the log files. If log itself is not getting updated/logged, how can we move further in analyzing the issues without the recent/updated logs? • Are there any libraries to allow Python or Ruby to get info from SVN?

    - by Mike Trpcic
I'm looking for plugins that will allow my codebase to interact with, browse, and poll an SVN server for information about a repository. Trac can do this, but I was hoping there was an easy-to-use library available to accomplish the task, rather than trolling through the Trac codebase. Googling for this returns mostly vague results about storing your code in and SVN repository, which is far from what I'm looking for.

  • Indentify Codecs & Technical Information About Video Files

    - by DigitalGeekery
Have you ever wanted to play an audio or video file but didn’t have the proper codec installed? Today we’ll show how to determine codecs, along with a host of other technical details about your media files with MediaInfo. Installation Download and install MediaInfo. You can find the download link at the bottom of the page. Note: When installing MediaInfo there is a recommended software bundle which you can opt out of by selecting Do not install option. Each recommended software choice may be different, like in this example it offers Spyware Terminator. The cool thing though is they use Open Candy which opts you out of the install. Just double check to make sure you’re not installing extra crapware. Using MediaInfo The first time you run MediaInfo it will display the Preferences window. There are various option such as language, output format, and whether or not you want MediaInfo to check for new versions. Click OK. Select a file or folder to analyze by clicking on the File or Folder icons on the left of the application window or by selecting File > Open from the menu. You can also drag and drop a file directly onto the application. MediaInfo will display details of your media file. In Basic view, you’ll see basic information. Notice in the example below the video and audio codecs, along with file size, running time of the media file, and even the application used to create the video file (Writing application).    You can switch to some of the other views by selecting View from the Menu and choosing form the dropdown list.   Sheet View will present the information a bit more clearly. You can see in the example below that the video and audio codec are listing in clearly identified columns. (AVC is often more commonly referred to H.264.)   Tree View is perhaps the most detailed. You can see from the example below the codec used for this AVI file is XviD.   Scrolling down even further you’ll see additional information like video and audio bit rates, frame rate, aspect ratio, and more.   In Basic View (and also in Sheet view) you can click to find a player for your file. In this instance with an MP4 file, it took me to the download page for Quicktime. This is by no means the only media player for this file, but if you are stuck for how to play a media file, this will forward you to a solution that works. You can do the same thing with Video codec. Click Go to the web site of this video codec to find a download.   MediaInfo is a simple but powerful tool that can be used to discover the details of a media file, or just to find a compatible codec. It works with most any video file type and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Some Mac and Linux versions, however, are currently command line only. • How do I supply extra info to IApplicationSettingsProvider class?

    - by joebeazelman
Perhaps this question has been asked before in a different way, but I haven’t been able to find it. I have one or more plugin adapter assemblies in my application all having the type IPlugin, for instance. Each adapter has its own settings structures stored in a common directory. Whether they are stored in one contiguous file or in separate ones doesn’t matter. Each adapter can have one or more settings associated with it. The settings will have both a name and the Plugin it will be used for. How would I create such a configuration system using the following requirements: I want to use .NETs built in settings system and avoid writing one from scratch The host application will be responsible for locating the plugin settings and passing it to the plugin Each plugin will be responsible for reading and writing its own settings to separate concerns. The host application should call Plugin.Save(thePath) and it does its thing. All settings are user scoped So far, I realize that I would need to write my own SettingsProvider, but the provider seems to work in isolation in that there’s no way to pass it parameters such as the path of the plugin directory and the name of the settings. All of the example code I've seen has the provider getting the data from the runtime environment.

  • Where did my free space go?

    - by Ari B. Friedman
    I have a storage drive (2TB) and an OS drive (90GB SSD). I've run out of space on the OS drive: /$ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 72G 72G 0 100% / udev 5.9G 12K 5.9G 1% /dev tmpfs 2.4G 1.2M 2.4G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 5.9G 428K 5.9G 1% /run/shm /dev/sda1 1.9T 639G 1.2T 37% /media/StorageDrive So be it. But when I attempt to figure out where the space has gone, I cannot find it anything remotely approaching the capacity of the drive: /$ sudo du -h -d 1 du: cannot access `./media/StorageDrive/home/ari/.gvfs': Permission denied 675G ./media 2.3G ./var 0 ./proc 7.0M ./tmp 27M ./boot 4.0K ./lib64 12K ./dev 44M ./home 16K ./lost+found 8.0M ./sbin 223M ./lib 4.0K ./selinux 1.4M ./run 140K ./root 8.8M ./bin 4.0K ./mnt 38M ./etc 8.0K ./srv 4.8G ./usr 65M ./opt 0 ./sys 682G . Note the difference between the total (682G) and the mounted drives in /media (675G) is only about 9G. How are 72G being used? Where is this dark matter hiding?

  • Why doesn't Inno Setup compiler set the version info correctly from hudson?

    - by Tim
If I run Inno Setup compiler from a command line/batch file it creates an exe with the version information in the file name. However, when I run from hudson (same command line) I don't get the version information. Perhaps I am missing something. Is this a known issue? This is the way I am doing it in the iss script file. #define FileVerStr GetFileVersion(SrcApp) EDIT: The env vars are all set for all users - not just my login - so the service has access to everything that the command line build does. EDIT: See my answer for a resolution of this.
