• Merging cuesheet chapter halves into single track for an audiobook

  I have an audiobook that I have ripped and I need some help constructing chapters. I have already made some cue sheets TITLE "Bookname" PERFORMER "the Author" FILE "File1.FLAC" wave ; 23971906.667 milliseconds TRACK 01 AUDIO TITLE "_Intro" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 02 AUDIO TITLE "CH 01" INDEX 01 24:15:50 TRACK 03 AUDIO TITLE "CH 02" INDEX 01 66:21:00 TRACK 04 AUDIO TITLE "CH 03" INDEX 01 87:05:00 The audio book is in two files. The chapter at the end of the first file is continued in the second file. However, the second file restates: The publisher Book Title List item Blah blah blah I would like to merge the two 'halves' of the chapter in one seamless track. The only way I can think to do this would be be: Bulk cut down the tracks. Drop the junk info into junk track Continue the track listings as normal Take the two "halves" of the target chapter and build a separate cue sheet for it. I know there has to be an easier way. I am ok with making the 'junk' info a 'gap' or something. These are are FLAC files that will be converted to MP3 for my phone and other potable devices. I have read the primers on cue sheets, but I am just not getting it.

• How to get nginx to pass HTTP_AUTHORIZATION header to Apache

  Am using Nginx as a reverse proxy to an Apache server that uses HTTP Auth. For some reason, I can't get the HTTP_AUTHORIZATION header through to Apache, it seems to get filtered out by Nginx. Hence, no requests can authenticate. Note that the Basic auth is dynamic so I don't want to hard-code it in my nginx config. Update - turns out the problem was something I had overlooked in my original question: mod_wsgi. The site in question here is a Django site, and it turns out that Apache does get the auth variables passed through, however mod_wsgi filters them out. • Should I partition a 1TB Hard Disk whose primary use is media storage?

  I am going to get a 1TB hard disk. I will be storing 1080p or 720p movies, high-bitrate music and pictures in it. I use my PC 90% of the time only to play/listen/see those. I am running out of space in my current HD so I am getting another one. My specs are 2.7GHz Dual Core, 512MB GeForce 9400GT, 2GB DDR2 RAM and all the proper matroska codecs/players. I guess that is enough to play 1080p movies withough a glitch, given an ideal hard disk. I've read about proper partitioning giving performance improvement etc.. I don't want my hard disk to be the bottleneck. Can someone tell me whether I should partition my 1TB hard disk into many drives? If I should, what is the ideal size of each partition? Smooth playing of movies is very important to me. Once I start filling up the disk, there is no turning back. So I want to get it right before I start. Thanks.

• ffmpeg - h264 to xvid creates large file

  I'm trying to use ffmpeg to convert a h264/aac video file to an xvid/mp3 file so I can play it in my ultra-cheap media player. At the moment the converted video file is TWICE the size of the original mp4. Is there any way to get a smaller file size without loosing too much quality? Even a drop to -qmin 1 is pretty awful! • How to play 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display?

  I use mpc-hc to play videos on Win7 x64. With the default settings (#1), video playback is great most of the time. But for panning shots, playback is not smooth. I stepped through the video frame by frame and found that the panning movement is smooth (e.g. each frame shifts horizontally by 10 pixels), so the problem is how the 23.976 fps video is interpolated to 60Hz. The judder looks like what would be caused by a "2:3 pulldown", where the frames are played unevenly like: frame 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, etc (#2) Using "optimal renderer settings" (#3) instead of the default disables the Aero theme and causes tearing. Setting my LCD display to 50Hz may have improved the judder slightly (but I can't really tell). My display does not support 24Hz or 48Hz, and forcing them in the Nvidia control panel gives blurry screen. I've tried other video players (VLC and KMPlayer), the ReClock Directshow Filter, video files from different sources (#4), turning on/off DXVA, and a computer with a different GPU, but the judder in the playback is similar. None of them solved the problem. So, how can I play 23.976 or 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display? I think a video player could make the video smoother by doing linear interpolation, such as: 1. 100% frame 1 2. 60% frame 1 + 40% frame 2 3. 20% frame 1 + 80% frame 2 4. 80% frame 2 + 20% frame 3 5. 40% frame 2 + 60% frame 3 6. 100% frame 3 7. 60% frame 3 + 40% frame 4 .. etc Can any existing video player do this? • How to serve media across home network?

  I'm looking to share my media across my home network. Router fully supports running a DLNA server, but I don't know if it'd be better to run the server from my main server computer instead of from the router, as the router would have to operate off of a network share and my server can operate directly off of the files. Here's what I need to serve, in order of importance: ISO 1:1 DVD rips (4-8GB files), MP4/H.264 encoded videos, MKV videos, MP3 files, JPEG/CR2 images. Maybe I'm completely ludicrous for wanting to push full DVD files across my network, but in reality, I would assume that only the parts of the actual file needed (ie: menu, main video payload for main title) would be served at any one time. Plus, encoding takes time and precious disk space, so why not stream it 1:1 ;) Does anyone know of the best way to accomplish this? Main goal is to serve it to Logitech Revue downstairs and secondary goal is to serve it to other computers in the house. For music, I assume I could run a DAAP server, but I don't think that the Revue supports that (and I can't exactly throw together an app that does it just yet).

• Did chkdsk make it harder to restore files?

  My friend asked me to try and fix his loaded Sansa Clip + which wasn't playing. After opening it in MSC mode I discovered that the Music directory was empty and total of all files was only a few MB. However Disk properties showed me that it was 7Gb full. I then ran Tools - Error Checking and Windows dutifully informed me that disk was corrupt and I should run again Allowing Windows to Fix Errors. I did that and it told me everything was fixed and that all files were placed in FOUND.000 Dir. FOUND.000 was about 7.5 GB with FILE0000-1546 . CHK. (I am aware of methods like ChkBack to scan and convert to mp3 etc BUT Original filenames and structure needed!) Now I started getting worried that I made things worse! I have plenty of experience with Data Recovery Programs - Recuva, Restore My Files etc. and I was anyhow planning to use them to scan the drive. But NOW after CHKDSK "fixed" the drive maybe it modified critical FAT information vital for data recovery. So I run these programs and 0!!!. No trace of files! I tried a ton of Recovery Programs with same results TILL EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard found all files and I purchased program for $55! My Question In your opinion - did running CHKDSK with automatic fixing of errors make matters worse (i.e. many data recovery progs. didn't find a trace and they would have done if not for chkdsk) or was the filesystem too corrupt anyhow for regular File Recovery Progs.? If I would be a Professional - would I be responsible for running CHKDSK - automatic Fixing. Do you know of a better Data Recovery Program than EaseUs Data Recovery wizard - According to my experience I haven't found better!? Thanks

• How to slow down audio files?

  I need a program (with an easy learning curve) that lets me slow down mp3 (at the very least this format) music and audiobook files. The software needs to be able to slow down the audio at the chosen speeds without altering the pitch and accuracy of the words being pronounced. Perhaps like the language software "Byki Deluxe's" "SlowSound" feature? I'm learning a foreign language (German) and I find the speeds at which the books are being read too fast. I need to hear the pronunciation of each word much more clearly to learn how to pronounce the words myself. Is there such a product out there? Now, I know you can slow down stuff in VLC but it sounds really artificial. I need something that slows down audio files without altering the accuracy of the words being pronounced. It doesn't have to be freeware; ease of use and quality is more important to me. Win 7 64-bit. IE 8. Edit: Are there any software-for-pay like Audacity? Only the beta works in Win 7. Also, I'd prefer to be able to slow down a file live and not have to create a new file to use the feature.

• How to embed/hardcode SRT subtitles into mp4 videos with VLC?

  I'm looking for a way to "burn in" or render/rembed/hardcode subtitles (from an SRT file) into an MP4 video with VLC. But no matter what options I use, it never works properly. I get a file that plays video way too fast (audio is normal), or one that plays normally, but actually does not have embedded subtitles. Also, with some options (like the one below) it does not play in QuickTime, only in VLC. So the main question is: how can I make this work in VLC? Secondary questions are: How do I decide which options I should set? Which settings are best if I want to leave the file bitrate etc. the same as much as possible, only embed subtitles? It seems I cannot leave the field empty or Video/Audio unchecked, so I guess I would first need to figure out the original audio and video bitrate. What do the "Scale" and "Channels" options mean? ... none of which are answered within the VLC documentation. • Hard crash when using bluetooth headset on MacBook Pro and Lion 10.7.2

  I recently picked up a bluetooth headset (Motorola S10-HD) and started using it with my MacBook Pro (17" purchased new in 2010) running Lion 10.7.2. Here's what works - stereo audio: iTunes Spotify Pandora (via browser) games (e.g. Minecraft, which is a Java app) audio from YouTube Plex, VLC, other video players Here's what doesn't work well - stereo audio fails and the headset seems to go into mono (i.e. tinny-as-hell) mode: Google Hangout Skype GoTo Meeting Here's what's just downright catastrophic. If I'm listening to stereo audio and then decide to jump into a Skype call (Google Hangout, or GoTo Meeting), bluetooth often crashes and I can only get things working again by shutting down the device, disabling bluetooth, and getting things back up and running again. But the audio is still horrible, and MUCH better using just a simple set of iPhone earbuds and mic. About 80% of the time during such a call, bluetooth crashes. And about 90% of the time, after the call ends, Skype is shut down, or I try to switch back to playing stereo audio, I get a hard crash!! The gray screen of death descends and I'm told I need to restart my machine. In one such instance, even after a reboot, I could not enable bluetooth again ("Turn Bluetooth On" was grayed out in taskbar). Is this just a weak implementation of bluetooth by Apple, or is this a hardware issue? I've seen others posting similar issues even on the Apple support site indicating that bluetooth headsets are failing left and right, but I haven't seen anyone mention hard crashes.

  I am currently working on a project and before i get started i thought it'd be nice to check with stackOverflow community, and see maybe they can help me with this. The Idea: I have about a thousand MP3 files that i need to convert into Video files to be upload on Youtube for my work. Here is where it gets tricky i need to also attach the Text associated with the Audio to the Video as an Image. I was thinking .ppt. The Problem: I can do this one audio file at a time but it would take me a zillion years. lol!! The Question: Can I Create Some Kind Of Program Using Let's Say XML or JavaScript Or XHTML or some other programming language to do a MASS content creation and all i have to do is feed it the Information?? possibly a script?? or is it possible to create an example .ppt file and then hack it so that i can have it reproduce itself with different information?? • Recover data from quick formatted DVD-R

  I need to recover data from quick-formatted DVD-R. Please advise a free of charge option (cheap commercial tools will be ok either). Disk was partially recorded with Windows built in disk recorder and recording most likely was not complete. Afterwards I have inserted partially recorded DVD again and on Windows recorder's message box 'How to use this disk?' selected - 'use for CD/DVD player' and data was completely lost - as new recording session was started. Files of photos were recorded on disk. What I have tried so far: DiskInternals CD-DVD recovery - sees 5 jpg files but can't show preview. Tool is commercial - trial version does not allow to recover files. CDCheck - doesn't see any files and reports errors at attempt to scand DVD CD Recovery Toolbox Free - does not even recognize DVD drive ISO Buster - recognizes two files - one MP3 file for 99% of recorded size and one ARC file for about 100 KB MiniTool Power Data Recovery - Free Edition - does not see any files on DVD Stellar Phoenix CD DVD Data Recovery - does not see any files BinaryBiz Virtual Lab - sees DVD disk but needs license to browse content Please advise how is it possible to recover files from DVD.

• What format should I convert my iTunes Videos to?

  Recently got Daniusoft Media Converter, and was about to strip the DRM off my iTunes library, then I found I had a huge decision to make. Converting my music seems obvious, to MP3, however the video formats, I'm at a loss on. It has "optimized" formats for all types of video players such as iPhone, Zune, Droid (which I own), and just a huge list! I bought several seasons of House and a few movies, though I don't know which format would be optimal to not lose quality. While I love my Droid, I have no intention on watching full episodes or movies on it, and I have a feeling that would reduce quality. One of the options sections is HD Video, and it has HD MPEG-4 Video (*.mp4). That one seems like it would be the best format to convert to without losing quality, but again, I'm unsure. Has anyone used this software, or have general expertise in video formats to give a recommendation on what file format I should convert my videos to? Format requirements: No loss in quality Portability would be ideal (as in, will play on my Windows and potentially MAC, and streamable to a bigscreen).

• Soundtest works, but no other sounds and windows starts very slowly

  So suddenly all sounds on my computer stopped working expect the sound test works, but when I go to control panel and audio it says there's no audio device. And audio players and audio on website doesn't work either. and Also windows starts very slowly. I'm not sure if this helps but I'll tell what happened before this. I downloaded this program from a little shady website, I hesitated and for a good reason I guess cos the moment I finished downloading it, my antivir detected it as unwanted program and put it on quarantine. I thought everything was fine, but had some problems with program (won't go to details about it cos it's not really related to audio) so rebooted the computer and I was suprised that windows started really really slowly. It took like 5 mins to load the desktop such. After that I noticed the sounds were missing, I immediately deleted the program since I thought it was causing the problem. But it didn't change much. I tried to find the solution with no success and now I'm just scanning again my computer. I'd be thankful if anyone would be able to help me. I might have left a thing or ten things out, so feel free to ask. oh and I'm using windows xp

(SITE) a Linux computer at the remote site, to which I can connect with ssh -X and nicely have X clients displaying on my local server. DISPLAY=localhost:7 xclient on ONYX fails with Xlib: connection to "127.0.0.1:7.0" refused by server I do know that the forwarding (6007:127.0.0.1:6007) succeeds. A previous attempt was: ? HOME connects to SITE ? HOME connects to MIDDLE: ssh -X MIDDLE (xclock displays on HOME, DISPLAY is 127.0.0.1:10) ? ONYX starts an SSH tunnel to MIDDLE: ssh -TfN -L 6010:127.0.0.1:6010 MIDDLE ? • Surround in Windows 7 with Soundmax

  Hey guys, I have a asus m2n motherboard with a Soundmax 1988 chip on it. I want to have surround sound in windows 7, but i cant get it to work. I tried a lot of different drivers, including the latest beta for Win 7. The problem is that when I configure the speakers and i do a "Test" all speakers work. But whenever I want to play some video or mp3, only the front speakers work. In vista there was this option called "Surround Fill" that would fix this problem, however, I cant seem to find that in windows 7. (The enhancements tab is completely gone for the speakers, other output devices do have that tab). Anybody knows the fix? Edit: I got it now kind of working by using a trial version of SRS AudioSandbox. However, the quality is quite bad since the program tries to create a real 5.1 of stereo sound. I just want to have stereo over 4 speakers instead of fake 5.1 over 4 speakers.

  I've had a look around google and this forum but could not find an answer to my question. So probably one of you can help me a little. My intended setup is: Router R1: wan connection to isp. connected backup server. provides some wireless SSID. other connected devices like printer, laptop, etc. both wired and wireless. Router R2: no wan connection to isp but connected to R2. connects mp3-streamer and music server. also serves as a wireless access point with same SSID. other than described connections only wireless connections. I would like to be able to control music even if R1 is off, e.g. with no internet connection. On the other hand I would like to access internet also in the case that R2 is off, i.e. no music access. Last but not least I would like to stream internet radio, i.e., R1 and R2 are on, and music is streamed from internet to R1 to R2 to streamer. I would like to realize all this using DHCP (also using static assignments) so i do not have to configure statically on android, laptop, etc. So my questions are: Can I make DHCP provide a list of two default gateways R1,R2? In order to make clients fallback to other gateway if currently assigned gateway is turned off? Thanks in advance, u_b

• Chrome will not load a web page with an <embed> element

It plays in IE, but not in Firefox or Chrome. My problem: Chrome reports "Could not load VLC Plugin". It seems to be a known problem that the VLC community don't necessarily feel like fixing at the moment, and is a result of Google choosing not to allow some certain kind of plugin. If I disable the plugin I no longer get the message but nothing happens when I click the button. Looking at the console in a debug window I see Uncaught TypeError: undefined is not a function Sound.html:7 PlaySound Sound.html:7 onclick which suggests Chrome could not find anything else to handle the sound file. How to I tell Chrome to use (e.g.) Windows Media Player? * UPDATE * This is apparently because the VLC plugin is a NPAPI plugin and Chrome no longer supports these. I have uninstalled VLC and this has removed the error on loading the webpage with an embedded sound element, but it still doesn't invoke WMP instead.

• What sound cards are there besides Creative's that offer benefits for gaming?

  Many years (6? 7?) ago I bought an Audigy sound card to replace the onboard sound and was astonished at the improvement in games. It was a completely different sound, the whole experience became way more immersive. As the time has passed however the card has become old. The support for the latest Windows versions is declining and newer technologies have definitely been developed. So I was starting to wonder - what newer hardware exists? Sure, there is the Sound Blaster X-Fi, but that's quite expensive and I'm not entirely thrilled by past policies of Creative either (like the whole affair with Daniel_K). But are there any alternatives? EAX is a patent by Creative, so it's doubtful that any other manufacturer has implemented it. And I haven't heard of any competing standards either. To clarify, what I would like is something like a "sound accelerator". A sound card that would offload sound processing from my CPU while at the same time giving astounding effects that would be impractical to do on CPU in the first place. I'm not interested in absurd sampling rates (for the most time I can't tell MP3 and a CD apart) or uncountable channels (I'm using stereo headphones). But I am interested in special effects in games. Are there any alternatives or is Creative a monopoly in this market?

• Switched to new router and now experiencing lag?

  I switched from a dynex-802.11b/g to a Netgear-802.11b/g/n just yesterday. My router is down stairs because my phoneline upstairs is retarded....but my PS3 is still upstairs (SOCOM: Confrontation is game I am experiencing issues). I have done everything I can to make sure the connection is solid and have checked the status and it has been as high as 80% and usually lingers at about 60%. I thought about upgrading my bandwidth from 1.5mbs to 7mbs, but I am guessing something is wrong if it worked fine before? Now the game seems more laggy and my voice chat is choppy. Others seem to receive my voice data fine because I can hear my own feedback clearly from other players (if you are in close proximity to another player and speak and there volume is loud enough sometimes you can hear yourself). I wonder if I port forward or setup DMZ then it will be fixed, but I am not sure and don't know quite how to do it. Has anyone else ever experienced this when switching routers? What did you do to fix it? Thanks!

• Which Cardbus/PCMCIA -> USB card works with external hard drive?

  I have an HT-Link Cardbus/PCMCIA USB 2.0 2-port card (NEC / 32-bit). My external hard drive w/USB adapter won't work with it, and it will work plugged directly into a USB port on a different laptop. (My USB ports got fried.) I got the card off E-Bay. My MP3 player works plugged into that card. The drivers for the card say "Known limitations: High Speed Isochronus, USB Composite Devices." (No other details provided.) I don't know if the hard drive adapter is "isochronous" or "composite." I've read there are problems with too little power being supplied to the drive. The cable to the drive has two USB plugs on one end, and it doesn't make any difference if I plug both of them into the Cardbus card. What card should I get? I see many different brands on E-Bay. I need one that supplies sufficient power for an external hard drive, and doesn't have any "known limitations" in the way.

Pdf: application/pdf; charset=binary For example, I use abiword – which is a good tool – but it converts any format. It doesn't check for valid documents: abiword --to=txt --to-name=output.txt audio.mp3 Is there any command available to check for valid documents then?
