  • Oracle GoldenGate Active-Active Part 1

    - by Nick_W
    My name is Nick Wagner, and I'm a recent addition to the Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) product management team.  I've spent the last 15+ years working on database replication products, and I've spent the last 10 years working on the Oracle GoldenGate product.  So most of my posting will probably be focused on OGG.  One question that comes up all the time is around active-active replication with Oracle GoldenGate.  How do I know if my application is a good fit for active-active replication with GoldenGate?   To answer that, it really comes down to how you plan on handling conflict resolution.  I will delve into topology and deployment in a later blog, but here is a simple architecture: The two most common resolution routines are host based resolution and timestamp based resolution. Host based resolution is used less often, but works with the fewest application changes.  Think of it like this: any transactions from SystemA always take precedence over any transactions from SystemB.  If there is a conflict on SystemB, then the record from SystemA will overwrite it.  If there is a conflict on SystemA, then it will be ignored.  It is quite a bit less restrictive, and in most cases, as long as all the tables have primary keys, host based resolution will work just fine.  Timestamp based resolution, on the other hand, is a little trickier. In this case, you can decide which record is overwritten based on timestamps. For example, does the older record get overwritten with the newer record?  Or vice-versa?  This method not only requires primary keys on every table, but it also requires every table to have a timestamp/date column that is updated each time a record is inserted or updated on the table.  Most homegrown applications can always be customized to include these requirements, but it's a little more difficult with 3rd party applications, and might even be impossible for large ERP type applications.  If your database has these features - whether it’s primary keys for host based resolution, or primary keys and timestamp columns for timestamp based resolution - then your application could be a great candidate for active-active replication.  But table structure is not the only requirement.  The other consideration applies when there is a conflict; i.e., do I need to perform any notification or track down the user that had their data overwritten?  In most cases, I don't think it's necessary, but if it is required, OGG can always create an exceptions table that contains all of the overwritten transactions so that people can be notified. It's a bit of extra work to implement this type of option, but if the business requires it, then it can be done. Unless someone is constantly monitoring this exception table or has an automated process in dealing with exceptions, there will be a delay in getting a response back to the end user. Ideally, when setting up active-active resolution we can include some simple procedural steps or configuration options that can reduce, or in some cases eliminate the potential for conflicts.  This makes the whole implementation that much easier and foolproof.  And I'll cover these in my next blog.

  • PaaS, DBaaS and the Oracle Database Cloud Service

This variation is evident in one of the key misunderstandings about the Oracle Database Cloud Service. People could be forgiven for thinking that the Database Cloud Service was a Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS), but this is actually not true. The Database Cloud Service is a Platform-as-a-Service, which presents a different user and developer interface and has a different set of qualities. A good way to think about the difference between these two varieties of Cloud offerings is that you, the customer, have to deal with things at the level of the offering, but not for anything below it. In practice, this means that you do not have to deal with hardware or system software, including installation and maintenance, for DBaaS. You also do not have much control over configuration of these options. For PaaS, you don’t have to deal with hardware, system software, or database software – and also do not have control over these levels in the stack. So you cannot modify configuration parameters for the database with the Database Cloud Service – your interface is through SQL and PL/SQL, with Application Express, included in the Database Cloud Service, or through JDBC for Java apps running in the Java Cloud Service, or through RESTful Web Services. You will notice what is not mentioned there – SQL*Net. You cannot access your Oracle Database Cloud Service by changing an entry in the TNSNames file and using SQL*Net. So the effort involved in migrating an existing Oracle Database in your data center to the Database Cloud Service may be prohibitive. The good news is that Application Express and the RESTful Web Services wizard in the Database Cloud Service allow you to develop new applications very quickly, and, of course, the provisioning of the entire Database Cloud Service takes only minutes.

  • In-House Generated Certificates Supported for Signing E-Business Suite JAR Files

    - by Elke Phelps (Oracle Development)
    The E-Business Suite uses Java Archive (JAR) files to deliver certain types of E-Business Suite content desktop clients.  Previously we announced the support of securing JAR files with 3072-bit certificates signed by a third-party Certificate Authority (CA).  We now support securing JAR files with in-house generated certificates.  The new steps to use an in-house Certificate Authority for securing JAR files are provided in: Enhanced Signing of Oracle E-Business Suite JAR Files (Note 1207184.1) This enhancement is great news for those of you familiar with the warning that is triggered when using a self-signed certificate.  As a result of supporting self-signed certificates, the following warning can be avoided: Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 Certified Platforms Linux x86 (Oracle Linux 4, 5) Linux x86 (RHEL 3, 4, 5) Linux x86 (SLES 9, 10) Linux x86-64 (Oracle Linux 4, 5) Linux x86-64 (RHEL 4, 5) Linux x86-64 (SLES 9, 10)  Oracle Solaris on SPARC (64-bit) (8, 9, 10) IBM AIX on Power Systems (64-bit) (5.3, 6.1) IBM Linux on System z** (RHEL 5, SLES 9, SLES 10) HP-UX Itanium (11.23, 11.31) HP-UX PA-RISC (64-bit) (11.11, 11.23, 11.31) Microsoft Windows Server (32-bit) (2003, 2008 for EBS 12.1 only) Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i Certified Platforms Linux x86 (Oracle Enterprise Linux 4, 5) Linux x86 (RHEL 3, 4, 5) Linux x86 (SLES 8, 9, 10) Linux x86 (Asianux 1.0) Oracle Solaris on SPARC (64-bit) (8, 9, 10) IBM AIX on Power Systems (64-bit) (5.3, 6.1) HP-UX PA-RISC (64-bit) (11.11, 11.23, 11.31) HP Tru64 (5.1b) Microsoft Windows Server (32-bit) (2000, 2003) References Enhanced Signing of Oracle E-Business Suite JAR Files (Note 1207184.1) Related Articles Two New Options for Signing E-Business Suite JAR Files Now Available What Are the Minimum Desktop Requirements for EBS? • Implications of Java 6 End of Public Updates for EBS Users

    - by Steven Chan (Oracle Development)
    The Support Roadmap for Oracle Java is published here: Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap The latest updates to that page (as of Sept. 19, 2012) state (emphasis added): Java SE 6 End of Public Updates Notice After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. For enterprise customers, who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 or older versions, long term support is available through Oracle Java SE Support . What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users? EBS users fall under the category of "enterprise users" above.  Java is an integral part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack, so EBS users will continue to receive Java SE 6 updates after February 2013. In other words, nothing will change for EBS users after February 2013.  EBS users will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6. These Java SE 6 updates will be made available to EBS users for the Extended Support periods documented in the Oracle Lifetime Support policy document for Oracle Applications (PDF): EBS 11i Extended Support ends November 2013 EBS 12.0 Extended Support ends January 2015 EBS 12.1 Extended Support ends December 2018 Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients? No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but currently remains optional. JRE 6 will be available to Windows users to run with EBS for the duration of your respective EBS Extended Support period.  Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients.  The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite with JRE 7 (for desktop clients accessing EBS Forms-based content) is in its final stages.  If you plan to upgrade your EBS desktop clients to JRE 7 when that certification is released, you can get a head-start on that today. Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops The upgrade to JRE 7 will be highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite. Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. For more details, see "Appendix B: Static vs. Non-static Versioning and Set Up Options" in Notes 290801.1 and 393931.1. Applying Updates to JRE 6 and JRE 7 to Windows desktops Auto-update will keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with JRE 7 installed. Auto-update will only keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with both JRE 6 and 7 installed.  JRE 6 users are strongly encouraged to apply the latest Critical Patch Updates as soon as possible after each release. The Jave SE CPUs will be available via My Oracle Support.  EBS users can find more information about JRE 6 and 7 updates here: Information Center: Installation & Configuration for Oracle Java SE (Note 1412103.2) The dates for future Java SE CPUs can be found on the Critical Patch Updates, Security Alerts and Third Party Bulletin.  An RSS feed is available on that site for those who would like to be kept up-to-date. What will Mac users need? Oracle will provide updates to JRE 7 for Mac OS X users. EBS users running Macs will need to upgrade to JRE 7 to receive JRE updates. The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite with JRE 7 for Mac-based desktop clients accessing EBS Forms-based content is underway. Mac users waiting for that certification may find this article useful: How to Reenable Apple Java 6 Plug-in for Mac EBS Users Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers? No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but will be optional for EBS application tier servers running on Windows, Linux, and Solaris.  You can choose to remain on JDK 6 for the duration of your respective EBS Extended Support period.  If you remain on JDK 6, you will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JDK 6. The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite with JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers on Windows, Linux, and Solaris as well as other platforms such as IBM AIX and HP-UX is planned.  Customers running platforms other than Windows, Linux, and Solaris should refer to their Java vendors's sites for more information about their support policies. • Announcing Key Functional White Papers for SIM and ReIM

    - by Oracle Retail Documentation Team
    Oracle Retail has published two new documents on My Oracle Support (https://support.oracle.com)  that provide partners and retailers with deeper functional information about two products: Oracle Retail Store Inventory Management (SIM) and Oracle Retail Invoice Matching. Oracle Retail Store Inventory Management Item Configuration White Paper (Doc ID 1507221.1) There is functionality within the Store Inventory Management system related to item configuration that spans across multiple concepts that apply to the application as a whole rather than to a specific area. This white paper covers numerous topics around item configuration including: Item Transaction Levels Item Long Description Pack Size Standard Unit of Measure Standard Unit of Measure Conversion Pack Items Simple Pack Conversion Items (Notional Packs) Ranging Items Item Status Non-Sellable Items Type-2 Item Recognition UPC-E Barcodes Non-Inventory Items Consignment and Concession Items Quick Response Codes Oracle Retail Invoice Matching Financial Transactions (Doc ID 1500209.1) This document explains the financial transactions that are posted by Oracle Retail Invoice Matching (ReIM). The scope of the document is limited to ReIM transactions only, and does not explain Retail Merchandising System (RMS), Finance, or Account Receivable transactions. ReIM follows the double-entry accounting standard, which works by recording the debit and credit of each financial transaction belonging to each party involved. Each transaction means a profit to one account (debit) and a loss to another account (credit). Full invoice match processing is completed in ReIM with payment recommendations communicated to Oracle Accounts Payable. ReIM matches merchandise orders and receipts against merchandise invoices, performing automated and manual matching, as well as discrepancy-resolution processing. Matched invoices are posted to interface staging tables specifying the amount and date to pay, vendor, site ID, General Ledger Chart of Accounts (GL CoA) information, and payment terms. Other payables documents, including debit memos, credit memos and credit notes are also interfaced to Accounts Payable through the ReIM staging tables (IM_AP_STAGE_HEAD and IM_AP_STAGE_DETAIL). For information about how ReIM engages in this processing, see the latest Oracle Retail Invoice Matching Operations Guide. Certain ReIM transactions are not interfaced to Oracle Payables, but instead are interfaced to Oracle General Ledger through the IM_FINANCIAL_STAGE table. When analyzing transactions posted through the staging tables, retailers should note the transaction type, Standard/Credit, as well as the sign in the amount field. Technically, a negative sign on a credit transaction changes the transaction to a debit entry, and vice versa. This document is concerned about the financial meaning of the transactions, and will avoid a discussion of negative numbers in T-charts.

    Hi! I have an activity with ListView and buttons below: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical"> <ListView android:id="@+id/lvLamps" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:listSelector="@null" android:choiceMode="none" android:scrollbarStyle="insideInset" android:layout_weight="1.0" /> <RelativeLayout android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal" android:layout_weight="0.0"> <Button android:id="@+id/btnAdd" android:background="@null" android:drawableLeft="@drawable/btn_upgrade" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:drawableRight="@drawable/lbl_upgrade" android:textSize="0pt" android:text="" android:layout_alignParentLeft="true" android:padding="20px" /> <Button android:id="@+id/btnNext" android:background="@null" android:drawableRight="@drawable/next_btn" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:drawableLeft="@drawable/lbl_next" android:textSize="0pt" android:text="" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:padding="20px" android:visibility="gone" /> <ImageButton android:id="@+id/btnListExit" android:background="@null" android:src="@drawable/btn_x" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:padding="20px" /> </RelativeLayout> </LinearLayout> ListView row contains delete button: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal" android:focusable="true"> <RelativeLayout android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="horizontal" android:focusable="true"> <ImageButton android:id="@+id/btnRowDelete" android:src="@drawable/btn_x" android:background="@null" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_alignParentLeft="true" android:padding="4px" android:focusable="true" android:focusableInTouchMode="true"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/txtLampRowFrom" android:text="123" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="6pt" android:layout_toRightOf="@id/btnRowDelete" android:focusable="false" android:textColor="@color/textColor"/> <TextView android:id="@+id/txtLampRowTo" android:text="123" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:textSize="6pt" android:layout_toRightOf="@id/btnRowDelete" android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" android:focusable="false" android:textColor="@color/textColor"/> <ImageView android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:src="@drawable/arrow_upgrade_to" android:layout_alignParentRight="true" android:layout_centerVertical="true" android:focusable="false"/> </RelativeLayout> </LinearLayout> In Adapter, Button onClickListener is set, also there are dummies to make list non-selectable: // disabling list items select public boolean areAllItemsEnabled() { return false; } public boolean isEnabled(int position) { return false; } What I want is: always show buttons in the bottom of screen after list (no matter how long it is, there should be scroll if it's too long) ListView should not be selectable, I don't want row selection row delete button should be selectable (focusable) with touch and with trackball And everything works except I can't focus row delete button with trackball (although it's working with touch).   • ExpandableListView child items don't get focus when touched...

    - by Justin
    Ok, so I wrote an ExpandableListView and subclassed BaseExpandableListAdapter... Everything works fine except I cannot get the child views to take focus when clicked. If I use the trackball everything works fine. But if I try to click on a child I get no feedback whatsoever. I have tried setting android:focusable, android:focusableInTouchMode, and android:clickable (and I have also tried setting this via code) but I can't get anything to work. Any ideas? Here is my Adapter code: public class ExpandableAppAdapter extends BaseExpandableListAdapter { private PackageManager m_pkgMgr; private Context m_context; private List<ApplicationInfo> m_groups; private List<List<ComponentName>> m_children; public ExpandableAppAdapter(Context context, List<ApplicationInfo> groups, List<List<ComponentName>> children) { m_context = context; m_pkgMgr = m_context.getPackageManager(); m_groups = groups; m_children = children; } @Override public Object getChild(int groupPos, int childPos) { return m_children.get(groupPos).get(childPos); } @Override public long getChildId(int groupPos, int childPos) { return childPos; } @Override public int getChildrenCount(int groupPos) { return m_children.get(groupPos).size(); } @Override public View getChildView(int groupPos, int childPos, boolean isLastChild, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { if (convertView == null) { LayoutInflater inflater = LayoutInflater.from(m_context); convertView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.expandable_app_child_row, null); } ComponentName child = (ComponentName)getChild(groupPos, childPos); TextView txtView = (TextView)convertView.findViewById(R.id.item_app_pkg_name_id); if (txtView != null) txtView.setText(child.getPackageName()); txtView = (TextView)convertView.findViewById(R.id.item_app_class_name_id); if (txtView != null) txtView.setText(child.getClassName()); convertView.setFocusableInTouchMode(true); return convertView; } @Override public Object getGroup(int groupPos) { return m_groups.get(groupPos); } @Override public int getGroupCount() { return m_groups.size(); } @Override public long getGroupId(int groupPos) { return groupPos; } @Override public View getGroupView(int groupPos, boolean isExpanded, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { if (convertView == null) { LayoutInflater inflater = LayoutInflater.from(m_context); convertView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.expandable_app_group_row, null); } ApplicationInfo group = (ApplicationInfo)getGroup(groupPos); ImageView imgView = (ImageView)convertView.findViewById(R.id.item_selection_icon_id); if (imgView != null) { Drawable img = m_pkgMgr.getApplicationIcon(group); imgView.setImageDrawable(img); imgView.setMaxWidth(20); imgView.setMaxHeight(20); } TextView txtView = (TextView)convertView.findViewById(R.id.item_app_name_id); if (txtView != null) txtView.setText(m_pkgMgr.getApplicationLabel(group)); return convertView; } @Override public boolean hasStableIds() { return false; } @Override public boolean isChildSelectable(int groupPos, int childPos) { return true; } } Thanks in advance!
