• How to get past "sending 'system' (92311 KB)..." when installing ubuntu on Nexus 7

  I'm in the process of installing the Ubuntu image onto my Nexus 7 following these directions. I am on the step 4 and typed in phablet-flash -b and it downloaded some files, erased 'system' and is now on sending 'system' (92311 KB)... However, it has been on this step for about 3 hours now. I am assuming it shouldn't take this long so how can I go about getting out of this and restarting the flash without bricking my device?

• Bash script "read" not pausing for user input when executed from SSH shell

  I'm new to Bash scripting, so please be gentle. I'm connected to a Ubuntu server via SSH (PuTTY) and when I run this command, I expect the bash script that downloads and executes to allow user input and then echo that input. It seems to just write out the echo label for the input request and terminate. wget -O - https://raw.github.com/aaronhancock/pub/master/bash/readtest.sh | bash Any clue what I might be doing wrong?   I have been trying to run configure to prepare the make file for GTK 2,9 on a fresh Linux box (running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx). it complained about some dependencies, including: glib-2.0 atk (1.29.2) pango (1.20) cairo (1.6) I managed to find the glib 2.22.0, downloaded the atk but did not compile yet, did not start the pango yet, but when tried to get the cairo package I didn't know where to get it from! nothing on GNU site, not on GTK site! anyone knows where to get it from?

• Got blue screen with a warning that I boot loader may not be properly configured, workaround?

  After running sudo apt-get update got this message: Configuring grub-pc You chose not to install GRUB to any devices. If you continue, the boot loader may not be properly configured, and when your computer next starts up it will use whatever was previously in the boot sector. If there is an earlier version of GRUB 2 in the boot sector, it may be unable to load modules or handle the current configuration file. If you are already running a different boot loader and want to carry on doing so, or if this is a special environment where you do not need a boot loader, then you should continue anyway. Otherwise, you should install GRUB somewhere. Continue without installing GRUB? <Yes> <No> Apparently there is a bug in ubuntu 10.04. But this hang the system. Any ideas on how to fix this? All I wanted was to install gcc that is missing.

What's especially odd is the drift seems fairly consistent. Any help appreciated on this one!

  I have a rails project run on the thin server(1.3.1) on a ubuntu server. I ssh to the server and start thin with command 'thin start -C config/thin.yml', following the thin.yml, port: 3000 log: log/thin.log timeout: 30 chdir: /home/byht/56platform/dev/tracker environment: production servers: 1 daemonize: true After thin starts successfully, I visit the project and it works well. Then, I close the terminal, I can also visit the pages that have been visited, but when I visit the pages that not been visited before closing ssh terminal, a "500" error appears on the page. I didn't find the error messages in the log file. I have tried start thin with nohup and sudo, but they are useless. I sign in the ubuntu server locally, then the problem disappears. But I need sign in the server to stat thin with ssh when I'm home.

• Upgrading Ubuntu(32 bit) 10.10 -> 11.04 fails and causes a kernel panic on boot

  On Ubuntu 10.10 machine Upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 using the update manager. The upgrade fails and leaves the system in an unstable state. When I reboot the system I get a kernel panic on boot. The error points to /opt/abc/runtime/lib/libc.so.6. By researching on this I found that there is a third party software abc causes problem. It has it's own runtime(libc) library. In /lib/ directory there is a link file /lib/ld-abc.so.2 ---/opt/abc/runtime/lib/ld-linux.so.2. If we rename this file to /lib/abc.so.2 or remove this file the the upgrade is success. Here is the upgrade log of where it crashes(apt-term.log) ===== Services restarted successfully. • Can't install egenix-mx-base on Django production VPS

  I have been following these instructions for setting up a Django production server with postgres, apache, nginx, and memcache. My problem is that I cannot get egenix-mx-base to install and without this I cannot get psycopg2 to work and therefore no database access :(. I am attempting this on a VPS running a clean install of Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) and have followed all instructions on the site to a T. • Rebuilding old (2010) django project in 2012

  I am trying to make an old Django project run again. After seemingly having solved issues with old sorl.thumbnail versions and deprecated expressions I now get this error when running python manage.py runserver I also tried to copy & paste my old files into a new Django project and get the exactly same error. • cURL/PHP Request Executes 50% of the Time

  After searching all over, I can't understand why cURL requests issued to a remote SSL-enabled host are successful only 50% or so of the time in my case. Here's the situation: I have a sequence of cURL requests, all of them issued to a HTTPS remote host, within a single PHP script that I run using the PHP CLI. Occasionally when I run the script the requests execute successfully, but for some reason most of the times I run it I get the following error from cURL: * About to connect() to www.virginia.edu port 443 (#0) * Trying 128.143.22.36... * connected * Connected to www.virginia.edu (128.143.22.36) port 443 (#0) * successfully set certificate verify locations: * CAfile: none CApath: /etc/ssl/certs * error:140943FC:SSL routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:sslv3 alert bad record mac * Closing connection #0 If I try again a few times I get the same result, but then after a few tries the requests will go through successfully. Running the script after that again results in an error, and the pattern continues. Researching the error 'alert bad record mac' didn't give me anything helpful, and I hesitate to blame it on an SSL issue since the script still runs occasionally. I'm on Ubuntu Server 10.04, with php5 and php5-curl installed, as well as the latest version of openssl. In terms of cURL specific options, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER is set to false, and both CURLOPT_TIMEOUT and CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT are set to 4 seconds. Further illustrating this problem is the fact that the same exact situation occurs on my Mac OS X dev machine - the requests only go through ~50% of the time.

  I received my new Dell Vostro 2420 last week, and just got around to upgrading from 11.10 to 12.10. Unfortunately, like many others (after researching the issue), I no longer have WiFi. I have tried every sudo command given that worked for others, and still can't get my wireless to function. I am new to Linux, so any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!   I've installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 in a new server and set up the 4 hard drives with 3 RAID 1 devices, the configuration is such that the first two drives have md0 (swap space) and md1 (/) with the third and fourth drives having md2 (/var). I've been testing the operation under a drive failure and found that the system boots fine if I remove disk two but if I remove disk one then the system gets to grub and then just restarts. I'm confused as to why grub appears to be loading properly from disk two but then the boot fails.

• To Run Linux (Ubuntu) on Windows 7, is using Virtual PC one of the best ways?

  I need to try Linux (Ubuntu) and feel hesitant to install Ubuntu on top of a Win 7 machine to dual boot (might need to use Win7 and Ubuntu at the same time). Is creating a Virtual PC on Win7, and then installing the latest Ubuntu on that Virtual PC one of the better option? So I think I can create a Virtual PC with an empty virtual hard disk (vhd), say, for 30GB, and then put in the Ubuntu DVD-R or CD-R to install Ubuntu onto that empty hard disk. Update: for some reason, the first time Ubuntu 10.04 installation CD-R boots up, it asked for the Language, and "Install Ubuntu" and then the screen has vertical green bars and then the VPC just closed. The 2nd or 3rd time it booted up, there is no asking of Language or "Install Ubuntu" and just shut down the VPC, sometimes with vertical green bars. I even created another new hard drive and same thing happened. And created VPC 02, and same thing happened. Created VPC 03 with a fixed hard drive size of 60GB and same thing happened.

• How does Ubuntu One sync two machines with identical file content?

  I have a notebook and a desktop computer, both running Ubuntu 11.10. I used to sync between the two with the help of Unison, so both computers have identical content in the Documents folder. I decided to try UbuntuOne. My question is, if I activate UbuntuOne for the two machines for the folders with identical contents, will UbuntuOne be able to recognise that, or will it sync to the cloud everything twice (and then down on the other machine). To put it another way, will I end up having two copies of everything on the machines and on the cloud, and therefore should delete the identical files on one of the machines before activating UbuntuOne, or not. Thank you, and if there is already something on the net about this, I'd be glad if somebody posted the link here.

• Is it possible to prioritize which folders get synced first when using Ubuntu One?

  I face the problem that u1 syncs my files to a given order. I'd like to change that order. Consider that: On a week end I work and I may also copy the content of my photo SD card onto my notebook. The next time I boot my work computer, I might be sitting there and waiting for some hours until U1 synced/downloaded all the photos to my workstation and the files I need for work are the last in the '--waiting' list. I don't mind if Ubuntu One is a slow downloader, I would be just happy if I could define that all files in a certain folder (and all of it subfolders) always need to be downloaded first. I'm aware that there was once the possibility to move some files to the beginning of the sync list. But that was a very clumsy way with providing the folder id etc. and in the current version of u1 I can't even find it any more. Any suggestions on how to prioritize always the same folder?

  I am currently experimenting with using Ubuntu as a my main OS instead of Windows 7. So far, pretty much everything is working fine, except for an issue that I am having with my touchpad. I have a Dell XPS 16 (1640) with a Synaptics touchpad. It works out of the box, but it seems that it stops working after returning from hibernation mode. This problem has also been addressed in an earlier bug, but judging from this bugreport, it should be fixed by now. I am running the 2.6.35-23-generic-pae kernel. Any ideas?
