• Steam (via Wine) crashes after login - any troubleshooting tips?

  The Steam client crashes after I login. After submitting my credentials, Steam displays a dialog box informing me the client is 'connecting'. I then see the Steam main page and news page displayed for roughly a second or so before the client crashes. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (I think..what's the best way to verify? uname only displays Linux) which I've installed on a usb flash drive using a capser-rw file for persistence. wine-1.3.14 I'm not sure how to troubleshoot. How do I identify if the problem is with wine or steam or the video card driver, or what? • Story of success: MySQL Enterprise Backup (MEB) was successfully integrated with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) via System Backup to Tape (SBT) interface.

  Since version 3.6 MEB supports backups to tape through the SBT interface.The officially supported tool for such backups to tape is Oracle Secure Backup (OSB).But there are a lot of other Storage Managers. MEB allows to use them through the SBT interface. Since version 3.7 it also has option --sbt-environment which allows to pass environment variables, not needed by OSB, to third-party managers. At the same time MEB can not guarantee it would work with all of them.This month we were contacted by a customer who wanted to use IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) with MEB. We could only say them same thing I wrote in previous paragraph: this solution is supposed to work, but you have to be pioneers of this technology. And they agreed. They agreed to be the pioneers and so the story begins.MEB requires following options to be specified by those who want to connect it to SBT interface:--sbt-database-name: a name which should be handed over to SBT interface. This can be any name. Default, MySQL, works for most cases, so user is not required to specify this option.--sbt-lib-path: path to SBT library. For TSM this library comes with "Data Protection for Oracle", which, in its turn, interfaces with Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN), which uses SBT interface. So you need to install it even if you don't use Oracle.--sbt-environment: environment for third-party manager. • How can you print a text file via gedit from the command line?

  I'd like to use gedit or some similar program just as a page formatter and pipe some text through it and onto the printer. | lpr just doesn't cut it in the presentation department. The printed output is subpar, even if I try to tinker with the margin and font size options. But I like the way text looks like when printed from gedit. Is there a way to have the best of both worlds and use a command line pipeline to print a text file with gedit-quality formatting?

• Why can't I upgrade my kernel via the terminal?

  If I type sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade I can only see that the kernel packages are kept back, and not installed. As the screenshot shows. If I then start the update manager I can install the kernel, with no problems at all. As the second screenshot shows. Why is this? The kernel is a new package and not an upgrade of an old one, this is why you can't use the command upgrade that upgrades packages. You need to use the command dist-upgrade to install new packages.

• Which is more maintainable -- boolean assignment via if/else or boolean expression?

  Which would be considered more maintainable? if (a == b) c = true; else c = false; or c = (a == b); I've tried looking in Code Complete, but can't find an answer. I think the first is more readable (you can literally read it out loud), which I also think makes it more maintainable. The second one certainly makes more sense and reduces code, but I'm not sure it's as maintainable for C# developers (I'd expect to see this idiom more in, for example, Python).

• How can I copy/paste files via RDP in Kubuntu?

  I recently installed the latest Kubuntu (x64) on my work machine as I am trying to migrate away from Windows. Unfortunately I use RDP very frequently to connect to customer's servers and need to be able to copy files across. I have tried the following packages with no luck: remmina rdesktop xfreerdp My latest attempt to solve this involved connecting one of my folders to the remote server, here is the command I used to launch rdesktop: rdesktop -5 -K -r disk:home=/home/dai -r clipboard:CLIPBOARD -r sound:off -x l -P 192.168.0.2 -u "administrator" -p pass The servers are not all running the same version of Windows, the one I've been trying so far is running Server 2003 R2. Customer servers range from Server 2000 to Server 2008. I've been Googling this like mad but all the solutions I find seem to fail, maybe because almost all the help out there assumes that I'm running Gnome. Sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks in advance for your help. Edit: Copying and pasting text seems to work just fine, but that's not what I need.

  I spent some time and tried varioues things but nothing works. Here's what I have tried so far: Making a new folder /usr/share/backgrounds/mywallpapers and add my own background-1.xml in there. Copying a bunch of my own wallpaper files into /usr/share/backgrounds/ Copy /usr/share/backgrounds/Contest/background-1.xml to /usr/share/backgrounds/ I logged out and in and no changes in Appearance app. I have heard about Wallch but I don't want some app running in the background all the time. I'm not even sure Wallch will work with Gnome 3. I also tryied gnome-3-wp (Gnome 3 Wallpaper Slideshow app) but it just seems broken for Oneiric Ubuntu 11.10. Anyone has a solution?

  I had installed Ubuntu inside Windows XP but then I formatted XP and installed Windows 7. EDIT1: I used Wubi for the same. I want to know which one of the two will solve my problem? creating a virtual disk or resizing root? Also is resizing root possible as the 4GB ext4 partition is already in a NTFS format Hard Drive partition. At the time of installation I had allocated only 4GB of space to Ubuntu. I want to increase that size as I keep getting a low disk space notification. I have surfed through a lot of similar questions but this is not a duplicate. Because I want to know a little about the file systems. In order to solve my problem,do I have to increase the size of root.disk? Or will it be solved by creating a virtual disk? Also I want to know the difference between creating a virtual disk and just increasing disk space of root.I'm new to Ubuntu so I don't know how the file systems function. EDIT2:I have created a virtual disk of 10gb ,but I'm still getting the same notification.Is there anyway to install all further applications on the virtual disk I created?

• EC2 instances keep becoming inaccessible via SSH, can I use elastic loadbalancer to check SSH connectivity?

  This is mainly an issue for my development ec2 server as it seems that my instance keeps becoming inaccessible via SSH. It happened yesterday so I killed that one and started a new one and happened again later today. The server still works, my web application is accessible in a web browser but whenever I try to connect via SSH I get a pemrission denied (public key) error message in my terminal. I am 100% sure I am doing nothing wrong as I can create a new instance of the exact same AMI (its a personal custom AMI), change absolutely nothing, including using the same .pem key, and then am able to SSH into that new instance using the exact same command as before (just changing the IP address). I understand that ec2 can have issues but having this happen every day seems a bit odd.. I am using an m2.xlarge instance so I don't know if these tend to be unstable, in the past I have used a small instance and had it running for months with no problems which is why I find this so odd. I am looking into using loadbalancing but it seems the only "health" checks they offer is for http or tcp so I'm not sure if I can make it monitor for SSH connectivity. This is important for development as I may make 1-2 new pushes of an application a day and use SSH to do this. I have a designer that needs to have the app always accessible as he works with the front-end files to test output with the live application. Anyways, any advice / info is appreciated

• "A hard disk may be failing" , but no additional info via gdu-notification-deamon (suggestions?)

  Got this message after logging in: A hard disk may be failing One or more hard disk report health problems. Click the icon to get more information. On WUBI and 10.04, there was no icon to click, and clicking on made the message go away. After rebooting, the message did not display again. I've got everything on all my hard drives in duplicate, so not super worried about a disk failure, though I am wondering why the message had no info on which disk it thought had problems. Suggestions?

• Why can't my pc and iPhone find each other via Bluetooth?

  I've got Bluetooth enabled on both the computer and the iPhone, and both devices can see my Bluetooth headset so this confirms that Bluetooth itself works. But when I let either device look for other devices, they find nothing (when the headset is off). I'm using 11.10 with all the latest updates. I have not installed any special or additional Bluetooth software; only whatever Ubuntu provides by default.

• Is there a way to suspend/sleep via bash?

  I have to get nine 46" LCD monitors (running Windows) to suspend/sleep at 8pm and wake at 8am every morning. It's been a bit of a mess trying to get the commands working, including the privileges. Since I'm an Ubuntu user first and foremost, I'm wondering how easy this would be in Ubuntu/Linux. I know cron would be able to run my suspend/sleep command at 8pm (what is the suspend/sleep command anyway?), but what about waking the machine up at 8am without using Wake-on-Lan or manual intervention?

• How do I set up XDMCP access via GDM?

  I am a newbie to ubuntu linux, and want to setup xdmcp access, so i can access it from my windows box using xming. part of it is learning exercise also, since i know i could use vnc to directly connect to ubuntu. I modified the gdm's custom.conf file like this [xdmcp] Enable=true but when i launch xlaunch, i see a blank screen, further diagnosing with wireshark, i got that the udp port 177 on the linux box is unreachable so i disabled the firewall on linux box, but still same result. I checked with nmap and there is no service listening on UDP 177 port, the gdnsetup on natty is quite different from the older version, where setting up xdmcp was in UI

  I have a project with lots of hidden folders / files in it. I want to create a zip-archive of it, but in the archive shouldn't be any hidden folders / files. If files in a hidden folder are not hidden, they should also not be included. I know that I can create a zip archive of a directory like this: zip -r zipfile.zip directory I also know that I can exclude files with the -x option, so I thought this might work: zip -r zipfile.zip directory -x .* It didn't work. All hidden directories were still in the zip-file.

I remember reading it at the time without being able to think of a use for what he was demonstrating. Just a few weeks ago, whilst preparing my article on searching strings, I got out my trusty function for splitting strings into words and something reminded me of the old blog. I’d been trying to think of a way of using XML to split strings reliably into words. The routine I devised turned out to be slightly slower than the iterative word chop I’ve always used in the past, so I didn’t publish it. It was then I suddenly remembered the old routine. Here is my version of it. I’ve unwrapped it from its obvious home in a function or procedure just so it is easy to appreciate. What it does is to chop a text string into individual words using XQuery and the good old nodes() method. I’ve benchmarked it and it is quicker than any of the SQL ways of doing it that I know about. Obviously, you can’t use the trick I described here to do it, because it is awkward to use REPLACE() on 1…n characters of whitespace. I’ll carry on using my iterative function since it is able to tell me the location of each word as a character-offset from the start, and also because this method leaves punctuation in (removing it takes time!).   My question is kind of hard to follow, but I'm asking if it's possible to make a virtual flash drive and sync it to another device with a USB to USB cable? To make things more clear, think of a typical flash drive. You connect it to a laptop and it shows up as a removable disk. Is it possible to make a computer a host of a "Virtual Drive" that would be connected to a USB cord on one end, and the other end connecting to another device such as a Xbox 360, or another computer.

• How to setup firewall to allow internet connection sharing via Wifi USB stick?

  I have a Windows8 computer linked to the internet via an ethernet cable ("Ethernet" network connection). I have attached to it a DLink Wifi USB stick, and I'm trying to share the main PC's internet connection with my Android phone via a local wifi network. I am using the following batch file to set up this network: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyWifiName key=password keyUsage=persistent netsh wlan start hostednetwork After I run this script, I can see a new network connection appear in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections" named "Local Area Connection *12", and I can see "MyWifiName" on the Android phone. The device name for this connection on the PC is "Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter". I also set up the "Ethernet" connection to share Internet with "Local Area Connection *12". However, the Android phone usually doesn't manage to obtain an IP from the wireless network, and when it does, there still seems to be no connectivity to the internet. When I turn off the Windows Firewall completely, or even just for "Local Area Connection *12", the Android connection is perfect. My questions are: How should I set up the Windows firewall to allow the phone to connect properly? Is there a specific rule I need to add to the Windows firewall advanced settings? [Note: the above method worked great in Windows 7, without any specific tinkering with the firewall]. Is it safe to turn off the firewall specifically for the "Local Area Connection *12" (the wifi connection) if the main Ethernet connection is still protected by the firewall? Thanks in advance.

• Category to Page and blocking category url via robots.txt -Good for SEO?

  I am using a template which in the pages it allows me to add sidebars / more content under and above the content I want to pull from a category which is very helpful. If I create pages to display my categories content wont the page urls go in conflict with the category urls? By conflict I mean causing a duplicate content error? What I thought might help was to block from robots.txt the category urls of the blog ex. /category/books /category/music Would that be a good practice in order to avoid the duplicate content penalty? Any tips appreciated.

  [Running Ubuntu 14.04, Unity] So, I have workspaces enabled and all that jazz. I know one can set some option so that Ubuntu defaults to more than four workspaces—but that's not what I want. Currently, I'd like a fifth workspace, but only temporarily (that is, I don't want it to be the default that five open. I just want it for today, and possibly w/e other day I need it). Is there a way to do this?

  While testing searches for keywords on my site, I notice that a mirror of it at http://a8.8d.344a.static.theplanet.com/ sometimes appears at the top result rather than my primary domain. It looks like this is an alternative address for my server. Will the presence of identical content at this domain and at my primary domain result in a Google penalty? If so, what can I do about it?
