• Google affecting my SERP Rank?

  The following are some of my website's details. Home-page: [thebluewaffles].[com] Keywords: Blue Waffles- Rest of the keywords are post/subject specific. Site Description: Health Articles Blog Site Age: 1.5 years A short history: When I started my website, the few things in my mind when posting content were at-least 500 words on each page and writing of all the articles with to the point information. I didn't go really fast with it which is why I only have about 15 articles in 1.5 years. The SEO strategy was more simple. I shared links through Social Marketing websites and some Article Sharing websites after which I could see my website's rankings in top 5 SERP results. I ranked good enough for about 8 months continuously but didn't keep updating content due to which there were some 3 rough months when no content was posted due to some personal work. The SERPS dropped to 2nd page in April and almost started disappearing in May. I asked a lot of people about it and most came up with the reason of "no updates to site" so I started updating my site again since the day, November has almost started and I see no signs of my website's ranking. Another important point is that when I post a new article, and do a title search in Google, I see it ranks good enough for the first 10 hours and then disappears. What could be wrong here?

• Exim: How to turn off DKIM for forwarded mail?

  I have DKIM configured in Exim for outgoing mail, as per the documentation. Exim signs all outgoing mail. But some of that outgoing mail is forwarded, thanks to a users .forward file. This is a problem for me, because some of those messages are spam (my exim configuration does not do any verification) and I don't want to take responsibility for them. But I can't figure out how to configure Exim not to sign these messages. My configuration is basically the Debian Squeeze default, with a few DKIM_* macros set. I can post more details, but I think seeing any example of conditional DKIM signing would set me right.

• Keyboard in Oracle VirtualBox

  My buddy is running Oracle VirtualBox, and everything works fine - except for the fact that the backslash ( \ ) key on a Swiss-German keyboard doesn't work - instead you're getting a vertical bar ( | ) - which is really quite annoying if you're trying to type in UNC paths.... The \ on a Swiss-German keyboard is on the key with the < and > signs - you need to press Alt Gr or Alt+Ctrl to get it. Is there any way to teach VirtualBox that we're using a Swiss German keyboard and that it should respect the keyboard layout??

• Musings on the launch of SQL Monitor

  For several years, I was responsible for the smooth running of a large number of enterprise database servers. We ran a network monitoring tool that was primitive by today’s standards but which performed the useful function of polling every system, including all the Servers in my charge. It ran a configurable script for each service that you needed to monitor that was merely required to return one of a number of integer values. These integer values represented the pain level of the service, from 10 (“hurtin’ real bad”) to 1 (“Things is great”). Not only could you program the visual appearance of each server on the network diagram according to the value of the integer, but you could even opt to run a sound file. Very soon, we had a large TFT Screen, high on the wall of the server room, with every server represented by an icon, and a speaker next to it that would give out a series of grunts, groans, snores, shrieks and funeral marches, depending on the problem. One glance at the display, and you could dive in with iSQL/QA/SSMS and check what was going on with your favourite diagnostic tools. If you saw a server icon burst into flames on the screen or droop like a jelly, you dropped your mug of coffee to do it.  It was real fun, but I remember it more for the huge difference it made to have that real-time visibility into how your servers are performing. The management soon stopped making jokes about the real reason we wanted the TFT screen. (It rendered DVDs beautifully they said; particularly flesh-tints). If you are instantly alerted when things start to go wrong, then there was a good chance you could fix it before being alerted to the problem by the users of the system.  There is a world of difference between this sort of tool, one that gives whoever is ‘on watch’ in the server room the first warning of a potential problem on one of any number of servers, and the breed of tool that attempts to provide some sort of prosthetic DBA Brain. I like to get the early warning, to get the right information to help to diagnose a problem: No auto-fix, but just the information. I prefer to leave the task of ascertaining the exact cause of a problem to my own routines, custom code, intuition and forensic instincts. A simulated aircraft cockpit doesn’t do anything for me, especially before I know where I should be flying.  Time has moved on, and that TFT screen is now, with SQL Monitor, an iPad or any other mobile or static device that can support a browser. Rather than trying to reproduce the conceptual topology of the servers, it lists them in their groups so as to give a display that scales with the increasing number of databases you monitor.  It gives the history of the major events and trends for the servers. It gives the icons and colours that you can spot out of the corner of your eye, but goes on to give you just enough information in drill-down to give you a much clearer idea of where to look with your DBA tools and routines. It doesn't swamp you with information.  Whereas a few server and database-level problems are pretty easily fixed, others depend on judgement and experience to sort out.  Although the idea of an application that automates the bulk of a DBA’s skills is attractive to many, I can’t see it happening soon. SQL Server’s complexity increases faster than the panaceas can be created. In the meantime, I believe that the best way of helping  DBAs  is to make the monitoring process as simple and effective as possible,  and provide the right sort of detail and ‘evidence’ to allow them to decide on the fix. In the end, it is still down to the skill of the DBA.

• Cannot Expand/Collapse tasks in Microsoft Project 2010

  I opened an existing Microsoft Project file today and was unable to expand/collapse the subtasks use the cursor and the '+/-' signs beside the parent tasks. I am able to expand and collapse using the 'View-Outline' ribbon icon. However when I attempt to do this using the mouse on specific tasks, my cursor will not perform the task. My cursor is a 'white cross' when I need it to be an 'arrow'. I'm assuming this is something minor that I'm missing. Any assistance appreciated. Thanks

• Need help partitioning when reinstalling Ubuntu 14.04

  I upgraded to 14.04 about a month ago on my HP Mini netbook (about 16 GB hard disk). A few days ago the system crashed (I don't know why but I was using internet at the time). When I restarted the computer, Ubuntu would not load. Instead, I got a message from the BIOS saying Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key I took this to mean that I needed to reinstall 14.04. When I try to reinstall Ubuntu from the USB stick, I choose "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" but then I get a message: Some of the partitions you created are too small. Please make the following partitions at least this large: / 3.3 GB If you do not go back to the partitioner and increase the size of these partitions, the installation may fail. At first I hit Continue to see if it would install anyway, and it gave the message: The attempt to mount a file system with type ext4 in SCSI1 (0,0,0), partition # 1 (sda) at / failed. You may resume partitioning from the partitioning menu. The second time I hit Go Back, and it took me to the following partitioning table: Device Type Mount Point Format Size Used System /dev/sda /dev/sda1 ext4 (checked) 3228 MB Unknown /dev/sda5 swap (not checked) 1063 MB Unknown + - Change New Partition Table...   I aim at keeping this blog post updated and add related posts to it. Since there are a lot of these out there I link to others that has done kind of the same before me, kind of a blog-DRY pattern that I'm aiming for. I also keep all mistakes and misconceptions for others to see. As an example; if I hit a stacktrace I will google it if I don't directly figure out the reason for it. I will then probably take the most plausible result and try it out. If it fails because I misinterpreted the error I will not delete it from the log but keep it for future reference and for others to see. • DNS settings for SaaS in the cloud?

  I am building a SaaS product. When a user signs up for an account they must select an alias for their site --------.getlaunchpoint.com. Right now I have an A record *.getlaunchpoint.com that points to the ip address server. However, with Azure I am not given an IP address. The suggested implementation is to make use of a CNAME. I need to create a CNAME for *.getlaunchpoint.com - getlaunchpoint.cloudapp.net GoDaddy does not support CNAME wildcards. Searching on Google I'm getting conflicting information... is CNAME wildcard a bad practice? I run into the same problem with Amazon EC2 if I want to make use of load balancers because you cannot tie a public IP address to an Amazon Load Balancer. Amazon also suggests the use of a CNAME. Any help would be appreciated.

• How to use UMLFS?

  I'm trying to mount what is inside UML session as FUSE filesystem on host. There's "uml_mount" program which looks like a thing for this purpose, but it fails. What is UMLFS (I haven't found any documentation at all) and how to mount it? uml_mount mounts FUSE filesystem and starts uml_mconsole <umid> umlfs <file descriptor> which tries to send this file descriptor to UML kernel (to deal with further FUSE things), but sending fails. Also I haven't found any signs of FUSE inside a kernel. Do I need some special patch for this?

  After making my server sign outgoing email I started to wonder what the benefits are. This is the opposite of a previously asked question. Naively I see two benefits: We can throw away all emails which don’t carry a valid signature: Wrong! Mail forwarders (like Mailman) will produce emails from someone at «domain which signs» which are not signed correctly (in their forwarded shape). We can skip spam checking on signed email: Wrong! A spammer can send a single email through e.g. gmail.com and then resend that email as-is (w/o changing headers) to a million people. So what are the selling points of DKIM?

• apache running but site not accessible

  Am pretty new to server administration. So I am not able to get to the root of the problem. I am running Apache2 with mod_php on a 1GB Rackspace Cloud Server (Ubuntu 9.10). My site goes down often, and I have to restart apache2 to get the site working. I checked the "error.log" file. There were no signs of any error messages. I even searched for words like [error] / error / warn / [warn] . But no results. The site goes down and even then apache is running. When the site was down, the checked the status /etc/init.d/apache2 status and it gave ** * Apache is running (pid 433). ** Any suggestions where I should look for the problem. Thanks a lot.

• Blind As a Bat in Multi-Monitor Hell &ndash; Free Program Inside!

  If you know me personally, then you probably know that I am going blind thanks to a rare genetic eye disease.  My eye disease has already been a huge detriment to my eyesight.  One of the big things to suffer is my ability to see small things moving fast right in front of me.  On a multi-monitor setup, this makes finding the cursor absolute hell. The Problem I’ll keep this short, as I’ve basically already told you what the problem is.  On my three monitor development computer, I am constantly losing the mouse during the day.  I had used the Microsoft accessibility mousefinder (press CTRL, and it pings around the mouse).  The problem with this is, there is only an effect around 50-100 PX around the mouse, and it is a very light gray, almost unnoticeable.. For someone like me, if I am not looking at the monitor when I click the CTRL button, I have to click it multiple times and dart my eyes back and forth in a futile attempt to catch a glimpse of the action…  I had tried other cursor finders, but none I liked… The Solution So what’s a guy to do when he doesn’t like his options?  MAKE A NEW OPTION…  What else should we as developers do, am I right?  So, I went ahead and made a mousefinder of my own, with 6 separate settings to change the effect.  I am releasing it here for anyone else that may also have problems finding their mouse at times. Some of its features include: Multiple options to change to achieve the exact effect you want. If your mouse moves while it is honing in, it will hone in on its current position. Many times, I would press the button and move my mouse at the same time, and many times, the mouse happened to be at a screen edge, so I would miss it. This program will restart its animation on a new screen if the mouse changes its screen while playing. Tested on Windows 7 x64 Stylish color changing from green to red. Deployed as a ClickOnce, so easy to remove if you don't like it. Press Right CTRL to trigger effect Application lives in notification area so that you can easily reach configuration or close it. To get it to run on startup, copy its application shortcut from its startmenu directory to the “Startup” folder in your startmenu. Conclusion I understand if you don’t download this…  You don’t know me and I don’t know you.  I can only say that I have honestly NOT added any virus’ or malware to the package. • laptop suddenly became very slow

  I have a compaq laptop. And I've been using it 2 years now. Then this day, it suddenly became very slow. It almost took 5 minutes from turning on to the log on screen. I click my username and it took 3 minutes to show the desktop. I click on my computer then properties to see if it is still showing 2 Ghz for the Core 2 duo processor. And 2gb for the memory. It took 10 minutes for all the information to show up. And its still 2gb and 2Ghz. So I may conclude that this is not a problem in memory or cpu. Its still running perfectly last night. And I have not seen signs of it failing. Things I already tried: Rebooting Shutdown then turn on again So how do I determine what causes this problem? How do I fix it?

• One codebase - lots of hosted services (similar to a basecamp style service) - planning structure

  We have built a service (PHP Based) for a client, and are now looking to offer it to other clients as a hosted service. For this example, think of it like a hosted forum service, where a client signs up on our site, and is given a subdomain or can use their own domain, and the code picks up the domain, checks it against a 'master' users table, and then loads the content as needed. I'm trying to work out the best way of handling multiple clients. At the moment I can only think of two options that would work: Option 1 - Have 1 set of database tables, but on each table have a column called 'siteid' - this would mean every query has to check the siteid. This would effectively work with just 1 codebase, and 1 database. Option 2 - Have 1 'master' database with all the core stuff such as the client details and their domain. Then when the systen checks the domain, it pulls the clients database details (username/password/dbname) from a table, and loads a second database. The issue here is security of the mysql server details, however it does have the benefit that they are running their own database instead of sharing one. Which option would I be better taking here, and why? Ideally I want it to be fairly easy to convert the 'standalone' script to the 'multi-domain' script as we're on a tight deadline.

  I want to set up an Oracle Linux 6 server that gives users secure IMAP email (with dovecot), Jabber IM, FTP (with vsftpd), and calDav. However, I want each user logon to be able to authenticate all services (e.g. Joe Smith signs up once for a username and password that he can use for email, ftp, and his calendar). My question is, which database service will be best suited for that application? Also, is there a way to link the database with the preexisting server shell logins (e.g. so I can read the root account's LogCheck emails on a different device)?

• How can I get Visual Studio 2008 to align my assignment operators?

  I had this in Vim and miss it dearly now that I'm confined to Visual Studio. I'd like to take this: MyType type_obj = new MyType(); MyLongerType longer_type_obj = new LongerType() To this: MyType type_obj = new MyType(); LongerType longer_type_obj = new LongerType() I have found some macros for this on the web, but they seem to be for an older version of Visual Studio (< 2008). Here is one from 2000. Edit: Further digging in Google turned up this one: http://www.omegacoder.com/?p=8 It seems to work to align equals signs, but I haven't yet figured out if it can align the local variable names, too. Still no clue as to whether I could just get it to perform this sort of behavior with a Ctrl E+D, although that might not be practical considering how it works. (It aligns going down from the line which currently has focus.)

• Flash Media Server slow over SSL

  We are using FMS to host a VoD site. We host FMS internally (we do not use a CDN). We recently installed an SSL certificate to alleviate connection issues for clients (they're networks either block or don't support RTMP), however we're noticing that when streaming in RTMPS connections are drastically slower (on the order of Mbps). I know SSL causes some amount of over head but both client and server show almost no signs of exertion. Speedtest.net and a locally hosted speed test confirm that bandwidth is not an issue. I'm really not a network guru, so I'm at a loss as to where to check next. Do any of you have an idea why streaming media would run so slow over SSL?

• Slowness on Exchange 2007 Server (network related we think)

  We are seeing some odd behavior out of our exchange 2007 server. I believe it is network related as during the slowness in response from the exchange server. During these times downloading files to server is fraught with connection resets and extreme slow download speeds that are not affecting other servers right on the same subnet with the same gateway and ISP. We have about 50 users at a time using Outlook 2003 from a terminal server not displaying any other signs of slowness, all network slowness is confirmed trying downloads on the exchange server itself. Checked for virus issues, there are none. Checked for hardware issues, none found I am noticing between 200-400 TCPv4 connections established I am seeing around 100k tcpv4(active) connections according to perfmon are these numbers odd? Has anyone run into anything similar? Our server has a gigbabit NIC linked to a gigabit switch using cat6 so I do not believe it is "physical". Thanks!

• I am not the most logically-organized person. Do I have any chance at being a good 'low-level' programmer?

  Background: I am entering college next year. I really enjoy making stuff and solving logical problems, so I'm thinking of majoring in compsci and working in software development. I hope to have the kind of job where I can work with implementing / improving algorithms and data structures on a regular basis.. as opposed to, say, a job that's purely concerned with mashing different libraries together, or 'finding the right APIs for the job'. (Hence the word 'low-level' in the title. No, I don't wish to write assembly all day.) Thing is, I've never been the most logically-sharp person. Thus far I have only worked on hobby projects, but I find that I make the silliest of errors ever so often, and it can take me ages to find it. Like anywhere between three hours to a day to locate a simple segfault, off-by-one error, or other logical mistake. (Of course, I do other things in the meantime, like browsing SO, reddit, and the like..) It's not like I'm 'new' to programming either; I first tried C++ maybe five years ago. My question is: is this normal? Should a programmer with any talent solve it in less time? Having read Spolsky's Smart and gets things done, where he talks about the large variance in programming speed, am I near the bottom of the curve, and therefore destined to work in companies that cannot afford to hire quality programmers? I'd like to think that conceptually I'm okay -- I can grasp algorithms and concepts pretty well, I do fine in math and science, although I probably drop signs in my equations more often than the next guy. Still, grokking concepts makes me happy, and is the reason why I want to work with algorithms. I'm hoping to hear from those of you with real-world programming experience. TL;DR: I make many careless mistakes, should I not consider programming as a career?

• Oracle Applications Cloud Release 8 Customization: Your User Interface, Your Text

  Introducing the User Interface Text Editor In Oracle Applications Cloud Release 8, there’s an addition to the customization tool set, called the User Interface Text Editor  (UITE). When signed in with an application administrator role, users launch this new editing feature from the Navigator's Tools > Customization > User Interface Text menu option. User Interface Text Editor is launched from the Navigator Customization menu Applications customers need a way to make changes to the text that appears in the UI, without having to initiate an IT project. Business users can now easily change labels on fields, for example. Using a composer and activated sandbox, these users can take advantage of the Oracle Metadata Services (MDS), add a key to a text resource bundle, and then type in their preferred label and its description (as a best practice for further work, I’d recommend always completing that description). Changing a simplified UI field label using Oracle Composer In Release 8, the UITE enables business users to easily change UI text on a much wider basis. As with composers, the UITE requires an activated sandbox where users can make their changes safely, before committing them for others to see. The UITE is used for editing UI text that comes from Oracle ADF resource bundles or from the Message Dictionary (or FND_MESSAGE_% tables, if you’re old enough to remember such things). Functionally, the Message Dictionary is used for the text that appears in business rule-type error, warning or information messages, or as a text source when ADF resource bundles cannot be used. In the UITE, these Message Dictionary texts are referred to as Multi-part Validation Messages.   If the text comes from ADF resource bundles, then it’s categorized as User Interface Text in the UITE. This category refers to the text that appears in embedded help in the UI or in simple error, warning, confirmation, or information messages. The embedded help types used in the application are explained in an Oracle Fusion Applications User Experience (UX) design pattern set. The message types have a UX design pattern set too. Using UITE  The UITE enables users to search and replace text in UI strings using case sensitive options, as well as by type. Users select singular and plural options for text changes, should they apply. Searching and replacing text in the UITE The UITE also provides users with a way to preview and manage changes on an exclusion basis, before committing to the final result. There might, for example, be situations where a phrase or word needs to remain different from how it’s generally used in the application, depending on the context. Previewing replacement text changes. Changes can be excluded where required. Multi-Part Messages The Message Dictionary table architecture has been inherited from Oracle E-Business Suite days. However, there are important differences in the Oracle Applications Cloud version, notably the additional message text components, as explained in the UX Design Patterns. Message Dictionary text has a broad range of uses as indicated, and it can also be reserved for internal application use, for use by PL/SQL and C programs, and so on. Message Dictionary text may even concatenate together at run time, where required. The UITE handles the flexibility of such text architecture by enabling users to drill down on each message and see how it’s constructed in total. That way, users can ensure that any text changes being made are consistent throughout the different message parts. Multi-part (Message Dictionary) message components in the UITE Message Dictionary messages may also use supportability-related numbers, the ones that appear appended to the message text in the application’s UI. • How to copy text out of a PDF without losing formatting?

  When I copy text out of a PDF file and into a text editor, it ends up mangled in a variety of ways. Formatting like bold and italics are lost; soft line breaks within a paragraph of text are converted to hard line breaks; dashes to break a word over two lines are preserved even when they shouldn't be; and single and double quotes are replaced with ? signs. Ideally, I'd like to be able to copy text from a PDF and have formatting converted to HTML codes, "smart quotes" converted to " and ', and line breaks done properly. Is there any way to do this?

• You can step over await

  I’ve just found the coolest feature of VS 2012 by far. I thought that being able to silence an exception from the “exception was thrown” popup was awesome, and the “reload all” button when a project file changes is amazing, but this is way beyond all of that. You can step over awaits when you debug your code!! With F10!!! Ok, so that may not sound such a big deal. You can step over ifs and whiles and no-one is celebrating. But await is different. await actually stops your method, signs up to be notified when a Task is finished,  returns, and resumes your method at some indeterminate point in the future. You could even end up continuing on a completely different thread. All that happens, and all I have to do is press F10. I used to have to painstakingly set a breakpoint on the first line of my callback before stepping over any asynchronous method. Even when we started using async, my mouse would instinctively click the margin every time I wanted to go past an await. And the times I was driven insane by my breakpoint getting hit by some other path of execution I don’t care about. I think this might have been introduced in the VS11 Beta, I’m pretty sure I tried it in the Async CTP in VS2010 and it didn’t work. Now it does! Woop!

• Twitter "Authentication Error" Turpial & Choqok (latest versions)

  I use Turpial a lot, but Turpial isn't connecting at all. I can still connect to Twitter thru the OS app (no issues signing in through Online Accounts) and of course I can still sign in using the browser, but Turpial gives me an "Authentication Error" and Choqok fails to do anything. I've tried changing my password, revoking the Turpial and Ubuntu apps in Twitter and re-enabling them, but then it gives me an "Invalid Credentials" message. I've even removed and installed Turpial multiple times, still nothing. I can't find any information or resources for this type of error from Turpial online. I think it may be something recent after finding this message elsewhere: (article related to "Birdie") It looks promising i'm currently using it atm, since all the other twitter clients no longer work due to the API 1.0 shutdown (posted today) I've never used Choqok before today, so I don't even know if I've set it up properly. It's failing to retrieve or send Tweets it just blank screens, but at least it signs in. I've figured that this isn't an issue with Ubuntu, or Turpial or Choqok, or the router (already replaced it today), so I don't really know what I'm dealing with here. I hope it's not another API issue, Facebook did something similar just a few weeks ago

• aptana/eclipse blocks other apps

  Hi, I've got a fresh win7 installation, the only apps installed so far are aptana (beta 3)/eclipse and firefox + chrome (except antivirus and drivers) Every time I start aptana, chrome and firefox are blocked, so firefox can't load a webpage (or sometimes takes veeeery long) and chrome doesn't even take care of events (so for example hovering over a link doesn't change the cursor and a click does...nothing or typing in an url, press enter - nothing happens) First I thought, aptana downloads something and blocks my internet connection... but IE works well and also there are no signs in the taskmanager (cpu%, network or memory) When I close Aptana, all works as before. I tried updating Java, which didn't help... On my office-computer I use the same apps and it works perfect. Got any ideas? TIA, waquner

• Google Analytics custom variables and how are they recorded?

  I have been asked to add GA custom variable tracking to my company's website. The company website uses server side includes, so making modifications to the tracking code happens identically everywhere. Maintenance is therefore a headache. Also, GA takes about twenty-four hours for custom variables to start showing up in reports and that makes troubleshooting a headache. So if you have custom variables // visitor level tracking, id = 12345 _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar', 1, 'id', '12345', 1]); // page level tracking, email = [email protected] _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar', 1, 'email', '[email protected]', 1]); The marketing people want the following out of this: User visits site and we record a unique id for them. Whenever they return this id will be used in GA. User signs up for our newsletter on page X and we record their email address. Whenever they return this email address is used in GA. Now a big problem for me is that I don't use GA and the marketing people don't use custom variables. So we don't actually know how this will work. Do I want Page, Session or Visitor level tracking? What happens because the same GA code is used on every page? If they visit the email sign up form and we record the email address, but then they go somewhere else where email is nonexistent will the value get 'overwritten.' Sorry for the long question, but there are a lot of unknowns for a GA noob.
