  • VS 2008 unstable after "Stop Debugging"

    This was on Windows Server 2003 X86, VSTS 9.0.30729.1 SP I used "Attach to process" to debug the program, but recently when I "Stop Debugging" by "shift + f5", I was prompted with an error saying "VS has an internal error and will be unstable". After that all the debug related menu items were disabled e.g. "Start debugging" and "attach to process" etc., even when I forcibly closed the program the situation remained, leaving me the only option to restart the solution. The only reason I can think of causing this is that I forcibly kill the process a lot, in order to able to rebuild it quickly, other than that I didn't do anything abnormal to VS. another sympton: when I tried to close the VS normally, I was prompted with "source file [] does not belong to the project being debugged" for all the files I opened inside of IDE, but the file does belong to the project.   • User control blank on form in VS 2008

    I've created a user control that contains a table layout control with various other standard controls like buttons and labels. Yet when I add the user control to one of my forms the control is blank. I've tried building the solution and a see the user-control flicker as if it's being updated, but it remains blank. Also if I actually run the program the usercontrol can not be see on the form. I've used usercontrols like this in the past. Is there something I'm missing?

  • Visual Studio 2008 awful performance

    Hi, I have ported a piece of C++ code, that works out of core, from Linux(Ubuntu) to Windows(Vista) and I realized that it works about 50times slower on VS2008! I removed all the out of core parts and now I just have a piece of code that has nothing to do with the hard disk. I set compiler parameters to O2 in Project Properties but still get about 10times slower than g++ in linux! Does anybody have an idea why it is this much slower under VS? I really appreciate any kind of hint! Thanks,

  • Month to Date in SQL Server 2008

    Hopefully this will be an easy one to answer. I am working on a table that requires MTD data. One of our SQL guys told me to use MONTH (@monthtodate)= 11 Where @monthtodate is set to GetDate() in the parameter list in SQL Server Management Studio. So in "theory", he says, it should select the month (11) and then get today and return all the requested data in between those two dates. But I'm thinking this isn't correct. In looking at my data I'm starting to think that It's just returning data for the whole month of November instead of just MTD. I guess, technically, anything that has 0 won't be calculated. However that just means it's poorly written code correct? In your opinions, would this be the better way to return MTD data: production_date <= @today and Production_Date >= DATEADD(mm, DATEDIFF(mm, 0, @today), 0) Thanks in advance everyone!

  • Can Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package be freely redistributed

    I am planning to use py2exe to make an application developped with Python 2.6. It seems that my app need the VC redistribuables : http://www.py2exe.org/index.cgi/Tutorial#Step5 I've read this tutorial and the redistribuables license agreement and I am not sure if I can freely redistribute these files with my program. (I don't have VS2008 license) Can I bundle the redistribs into an installer and make the installation transparent for the user or do they have to download the files by their own from Microsoft website?     I've got the following trigger; CREATE TRIGGER trFLightAndDestination ON checkin_flight AFTER INSERT,UPDATE AS BEGIN IF NOT EXISTS ( SELECT 1 FROM Flight v INNER JOIN Inserted AS i ON i.flightnumber = v.flightnumber INNER JOIN checkin_destination AS ib ON ib.airport = v.airport INNER JOIN checkin_company AS im ON im.company = v.company WHERE i.desk = ib.desk AND i.desk = im.desk ) BEGIN RAISERROR('This combination of of flight and check-in desk is not possible',16,1) ROLLBACK TRAN END END What i want the trigger to do is to check the tables Flight, checkin_destination and checkin_company when a new record for checkin_flight is added. Every record of checkin_flight contains a flightnumber and desknumber where passengers need to check in for this destination. The tables checkin_destination and checkin_company contain information about companies and destinations restricted to certain checkin desks. When adding a record to checkin_flight i need information from the flight table to get the destination and flightcompany with the inserted flightnumber. This information needs to be checked against the available checkin combinations for flights, destinations and companies. I'm using the trigger as stated above, but when i try to insert a wrong combination the trigger allows it. What am i missing here?

  • Intellisense for Javascript - not correct in Visual Studio 2008/2010

    var obj = document.getElementById("header"); Given the above code snippet, I should be able to wire event handlers. For example, I can wire onMouseDown to the mouse down event, the issue is that Visual Studio does not display this in the Intellisense. I'm trying something such as: obj.onmousedown = mousestatus; Based on a book I'm reading, the code is valid (at least it works) therefore I see no reason why Intellisense is not picking it up. I've tried this on both a standalone Javascript file, as well as an MVC project to no luck. Is there anything I'm doing wrong - or is there a way to resolve this?

  • How to stop Word 2011 opening hyperlinks on click?

    In previous versions of MS Word, there was a preference for the action to be taken when the user clicked a hyperlink: open it, or edit it. Word 2011 appears to have defaulted to opening the hyperlink, and I can't find the preference to change this behaviour. How can I change Word's default behaviour when a hyperlink is clicked to be editing the text of the hyperlink? Holding down a modifier key when clicking is not an acceptable solution, as the aim here is to prevent misclicks from causing web pages to open. Edit: the links need to stay as links in the saved document. But when clicked on my machine, they should not open; Word needs to default to just editing the link, so an inaccurate click does not take me out of the document into Safari. Older versions of Word had a preference controlling this, and Microsoft seem to have removed it and fixed the behaviour at the unsafe option in order to satisfy the point-and-drool crowd.

  • Can no longer debug ActiveX controls in Visual Studio 2008

    For a long time I would throw up a DebugBreak() or ASSERT(false) in the startup code of my ActiveX control, load up IE, go to a localhost page hosting my control, wait for the dialog to show up, then debug my application. I could also launch it under the debugger by setting IE as the container. I tried again for the first time in 2 months and now this no longer works. If I use the ASSERT(false) method, when I get the Visual C++ Debug dialog and click "retry", IE simply closes without any debugger activity. When I try launching from VS2008 and hoping the DebugBreak() will kick in after I load the page, VS2008 does break, but it says either the "RPC Server is Unavailable" or the "RPC Client Call failed." I am never allowed to have my application in the debugger and it doesn't show up in the modules list of VS. The stack trace in VS2008 only contains Microsoft DLLs and modules and not a hint of my code. I assume it's something I've picked up through Windows Update that broke this. Has anyone else ever seen this issue and know how to make it go away? As it stands, I'm now completely unable to debug my ActiveX control.

    Hi, I have a table called Resource, and i am making a line chart (the chart is complicated, so just assume its a simple xy line chart). I want to execute the report with different resources. I have added a new parameter and bound it to a dataset to return a dropdownlist of resource names. Can i do a mulitiple selection of resource. for example if i want to make chart with ResourceA and ResourceB, only, can i select these two resources from the dropdownlist of parameters. cheers, Oz

    I had a web reference set in my VS2008 ASP.NET project, but due to some source control weirdness it is no longer listed in the project. I have the set of files in the Web References folder under my project. There's a .wsdl, .disco and several .datasource files. Is there any way to re-add this web reference through the existing files rather than using the "Add Web Reference" dialog?

    I have this procedure that executes another procedure passed by a parameter and its parameters datefrom and dateto.     I have a program that doesn't seem to recognize declared types in the latest U3D software. There's a line typedef BOOL (WINAPI* GMI)(HMON, LPMONITORINFOEX); which gets the error: Error 1 error C2061: syntax error : identifier 'LPMONITORINFOEX' c:\Projects\U3D\Source\RTL\Platform\Common\Win32\IFXOSRender.cpp 28 and a line MONITORINFOEX miMon; which gets Error 5 error C2065: 'miMon' : undeclared identifier c:\Projects\U3D\Source\RTL\Platform\Common\Win32\IFXOSRender.cpp 49 Error 3 error C2065: 'MONITORINFOEX' : undeclared identifier c:\Projects\U3D\Source\RTL\Platform\Common\Win32\IFXOSRender.cpp 49 The program's first non-comment statement is #include <windows.h>, which includes winuser.h, which defines these identifiers. In Visual Studio, I can right-click on them and go to the definition (a typedef) and from the typedef to the struct. WINAPI is defined in WinDef.h, so that seems to be working. There are no redefinitions of LPMONITORINFOEX or MONITORINFOEX in any other file. So, how can this be happening, and what can I do about it?

  • Visual Studio 2008 Navigate Forewards/Backwards Buttons Don't Work As Expected

    I just installed VS2008 on my new Win7 box. I have Navigate Backwards and Navigate Forwards buttons on my tool bar. When I change between documents, I do NOT see a list drop down for each of the buttons like should be seen here after opening multiple documents and switching between their methods: How it should work. Instead, I just see the buttons without drop downs. I find that navigating forwards and backwards doesn't work as it should. I should be able to click in different lines of the code and press the nav back/forwards buttons to jump between lines. This is not the case. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced. PS - I installed SP1 just to see and nothing changed.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 File Permissions

    I’m having some problems understanding some particular file permissions behaviour. Here are the steps to reproduce: Log into the server using the default Administrator account Create a text file (testfile.txt) in C:\ProgramData containing some arbitrary text Create a new user account and make it a member of the Administrators group Log in using new account and open C:\ProgramData\testfile.txt Edit the text and try to save Upon clicking save I’m presented with the save as dialog, which indicates that i do not have the necessary permissions to edit the file. This seems odd considering that the new user account is a member of Administrators. When I view the permissions of the file I can see the there are three groups listed, System, Administrators and Users. SYSTEM and Administrators have full permissions, however, Users only has the Read & Execute and Read permissions checked. It would appear that when I open the testfile.txt from the new users account, it opens in the context of the Users group, despite being a member of Administrators, is this correct? It would certainly explain the behaviour. The reason that this is an issue for me is that if I deploy an application via 'Run as Administrator', will normal users be able to edit the text files I install to ProgramData. Is this behaviour confined to Windows server or is it the same in Vista and Win7.
