• Inexplicable low ranking [closed]

  I have created two similar websites relating to monetary systems. So far, one appears to be loved by Google and the other hated. I'm struggling to work out why. The successful one is fullreservebanking.com. If you type in "full reserve banking" into Google, my site appears 2nd in the list behind Wikipedia. The unsuccessful one is fractionalreserves.com. If you type in "fractional reserve banking" into Google, it's nowhere to be seen. This is a mystery to me because both sites were created by me with the same design philosophy, both in pure html. Both are packed to the rafters with references to, and information about, their respective subjects. One issue I'm worried may be the cause is to do with the location of the sites. I got a web hosting package from hostmonster.com for fullreservebanking, but fractionalreserves is just an "add-on" which sits on a subdirectory of fullreservebanking. I wonder if Google somehow detects this and treats it as a less significant website?

• Chrome refused to execute this JavaScript file

  In the head of my HTML page, I have: <script src="https://raw.github.com/cloudhead/less.js/master/dist/less-1.3.3.js"></script> When I load the page in my browser (Google Chrome v 27.0.1453.116) and enable the developer tools, it says: Refused to execute script from 'https://raw.github.com/cloudhead/less.js/master/dist/less-1.3.3.js' because its MIME type ('text/plain') is not executable, and strict MIME type checking is enabled. Indeed, the script won't run. Why does Chrome think this is a plain text file? It clearly has a .js file extension. Since I'm using HTML5, I omitted the type attribute, so I thought that might be causing the problem. So I added type="text/javascript" to the <script> tag, and got the same result. I even tried type="application/javascript" and still got the same error. Then I tried changing it to type="text/plain" just out of curiosity. The browser did not return an error, but of course the JavaScript did not run either. Finally I thought the periods in the filename might be throwing the browser off. So in my HTML code, I changed all the periods to the URL escape character %2E: <script src="https://raw.github.com/cloudhead/less%2Ejs/master/dist/less-1%2E3%2E3.js"></script> This still did not work. The only thing that truly works (i.e. the browser does not give an error and the JS successfully runs) is if I download the file, upload it to a local directory, and then change the src value to the local file. I'd rather not do this since I'm trying to save space on my own website. How do I get Chrome to recognize that the linked file is actually a JavaScript type?

• How to clear unshown OSD notifications

  I am a webmaster of 2 active websites. Every time I start Thunderbird, it downloads all the new messages from the admin mail addresses of these sites - info@site.com, contact@site.com, webmaster@site.com, etc. There are about 20 of them - this includes my personal email accounts. Now, am not always connected to the internet and there arises cases where I need to access already downloaded mails. Thunderbird then tries to connect to the internet, which it can't coz am offline, and then displays about twenty OSD notifications, one after the other, telling me that connection for each email address has failed. That's frustrating and it really eating me up. Am looking for a way, either: 1. To tell Thunderbird NOT to connect to the internet when am offline, or 2. To clear all these notifications after like the first one shows. And if it will help, am using ubuntu 13.04 and Thunderbird 24.0 and I always keep my computer fully updated. Any help is welcome. • Updating Google sitemap for mobile

  I have a series of utilities to generate Google sitemaps for my whole site. These files are massive, and slow to build. We want to start telling Google these pages are mobile-crawl-able too, by adding them to mobile sitemaps, but the documentation is unclear if I need to specify physically different files for my mobile URLs than for my normal ones. • Why do my websites have a first page rank on Bing and Yahoo but not Google? [closed]

  I have 3 websites suffering from a drop in ranking with Google and hence a huge drop in traffic. The instant drop ocurred in September and I have not been able to remedy it. For the past 6-10 years my main website http://LearnToSail.Net has ranked from #3 to #1 on the 1st page of Google and all the other engines with the search term "learn to sail" Now it shows on the 1st page of Bing and Yahoo but does not show up on ANY pages of Google. The only way it does come up is if I add "cd" to the "learn to sail" phrase. We sell a sailing cd on that website. The other websites are http://LearnToSailOnLine.com ..search terms are "learn to sail online" or learntosailonline and historyofthepilgrims.com search terms are "history of the pilgrims" "historyofthepilgrims" I get the same result. Gone on Google but 1st pages for Bing and Yahoo. I have researched, edited,updated blogs, made sitemaps, prayed to the universe and use Google Webmaster tools but nothing is changing and I have lost alot of business. I host with 1and1.com and have been back and forth with them but to no avail and no change in traffic. I thought maybe some DNS mapping was off. I used to have alot of traffic now I have hardly any. • Redirecting 2 or more domains to same hosting server

  I have domains A.com, A.co.in and A.in Purchased from site X. I have a hosting space/account purchased from site Y, which has provided me with 2 DNS entries that is to be replaced in the account at the site from where I purchase the domains. I have successfully changed the DNS entries of A.com to these 2 DNS entries and I am able to see my index.html page when I hit A.com. Problem On similar lines, I have changed the DNS entries to the same entries for A.co.in and A.in, but on hitting those sites in browser gives me no response and browser specific page of 'Site not found' is been seen. Please let me know, how to set this, so that when I hit any of the domain, the web-site is rendered from the hosting server? What am I doing wrong here? Note It has been more than 3 days after changing the DNS entries, so I don't think so this is a problem of DNS propagation, which I heard from some people. Please provide some detail explanation, as I am very very new to this. This is my first hosting ;) -Thanks

• Javascript widgets: do links count as SEO backlinks? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How good is it for SEO if you have a widget that lives on other sites? On my website I offer an option to let users embed information from my site with some kind of "homepage widget". If a user wants to embed it in his website, he basically has to add one line of Javascript to his HTML files like this: <script src="http://mysite.com/myscript.php?some_options_here"></script> Inside the widget, I export some content from my website and of course create a link back to my website. This is done in Javascript with document.write. document.writeln("My great exported content"); document.writeln('<a href="http://mysite.com?ref=widget>Check mysite.com</a>'); I have Google Analytics set up to track whether the links in there get clicked, and they do. Now I am asking myself if Google recognizes these links as valid backlinks from the embedding domain. I know that Googlebot can parse and execute Javascript, but I have not found any references whether these links also count as "normal" backlinks.

• Blogger Blog Takes Ages to Load after Custom Domain Redirection

  I recently bought a custom domain for a blogger blog (technabled.com) I have for sometime now. I followed the instructions on blogger's documentation. I added A-name records and CNAME records with my DNS provider. But, now, some strange problems are cropping up. If I connect to my broadband network and then ping technabled.com, it times out. Then, if I visit the webpage, which takes almost one and half minutes to load, and then if I ping technabled.com, it shows expected result. This is not just me. I asked some of the regular readers, who reported the same issue. As a result of this, I am losing a lot of visits. What is stranger is that the subsequent visits to the blog is faster. I have checked with a few online services to test the performance. WebPageTest seems to say the same thing: http://www.webpagetest.org/result/110117_1N_7PE/ (please see the First View / Repeat View time) Also, the pagespeed score is not that bad. So I am ruling out other possibilities. I am at a loss as to what I should do to find a solution. Help is much appreciated. :)

• Cannot boot after installing ubuntu on lenovo x120e

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my x120e using amd64 alternate iso image. The installation went fine, but it is having issues while booting after a successful installation, it says - "No Operating System Found". I followed the instruction at - help.ubuntu.com/community/X120e#Installation to purge grub-efi and installed grub-pc, even then I couldn't boot into ubuntu.(got the same "No Operating System Found") This is the file from boot-repair with this setup - http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/926556/ Then I asked in #ubuntu and they suggested me to create a bios-boot partition, I was not very comfortable with the solution they had suggested but gave it a try anyhow. I re-sized my initial partition and made 4 MB free space in the beginning of the partition and had set the flag bios_grub. Re-installed ubuntu 11.10 this time using amd64 desktop iso image file. Installation went fine as before but finally this time also the system didn't boot, it gave the same - "No Operating System Found" message. In BIOS I have the settings as to use both (Legacy and UEFI) and with UEFI tried first. • Microsoft Access as a Weapon of War

  A while ago (probably a decade ago, actually) I saw a report on a tracking system maintained by a U.S. Army artillery control unit.  This system was capable of maintaining a bearing on various units in the field to help avoid friendly fire.  I consider the U.S. Army to be the most technologically advanced fighting force on Earth, but to my terror I saw something on the title bar of an application displayed on a laptop behind one of the soldiers they were interviewing: Tracking.mdb Oh yes.  Microsoft Office Suite had made it onto the battlefield.  My hope is that it was just running as a front-end for a more proficient database (no offense Access people), or that the soldier was tracking something else like KP duty or fantasy football scores.  But I could also see the corporate equivalent of a pointy-haired boss walking into a cube and asking someone who had piddled with Access to build a database for HR forms.  Except this pointy-haired boss would have been a general, the cube would have been a tank, and the HR forms would have been targets that, if something went amiss, would have been hit by a 500lb artillery round. Hope that solider could write a good query :)

• How do I simplify a 2D game grid for level management while keeping its by-pixel features?

  (I cross-posted this from StackOverflow as this seems to be a more appropriate forum. I've looked around a little here and I did not find an answer, so I hope this is not a recurring question.) This is a question dealing with 2D world design. I am playing around by creating a 2D bird's eye view shooter game, and I am looking to make the game sleek and advanced. I hope to be able to write physics so projectiles have momentum and knock-down properties. I am immediately running into the problem of world design. I need a way to have level files that store everything there is about a game. This is easiest by just having a grid of objects. But there are thin-walls and other objects that don't seem to fit into a traditional cell of a grid. I want to be able to fit all these together so I can streamline level design; so I don't have to put in the exact pixel-specific start and end of a wall. There doesn't seem to be an obvious translation from level file to game without forcing myself into a pacman-life scenario, meaning a scenario where the game feels boxy and discrete. There is a contrast between the smoothly (relatively) moving characters and finite jumps in a grid. I would appreciate an answer that would describe implementation options or point me to resources that do. I would also appreciate references to sites that teach game design. The language I am using is Java (although I would love to use C or C++, but I can never find convenient resources in those languages). Thank you for any answers. • Cry Engine 3 vs UDK

  I'm new here and I hope that other people may find this question interesting. Me and a bunch of guys from my University are thinking about getting started in game development, but, even though the game design is kind of ready, we are stucked at the point "which Engine should we choose". At first, we were thinking about Unity3D Free, in particular because we are pretty familiar with C# and, even better, it's completely free, but on the other hand there are some cons like no dynamic shadowing that make the realization of our game kinda hard. So, we are thinking about moving either to UDK or Cry Engine, since they are not as expensive as Unity3D Pro (at least before the game deployment) . The thing we are worried the most, though, is that we are kind of scared about the support for team work(i mean, that we might find it hard to coordinate our efforts without software support), since in Unity3D the team features are part of purchasable content, and we are not interested in paying that much for a project we are not even sure we can complete. So, finally, I hope one of you knows the mentioned engines enough to give us a tip telling which one offers better team features and is advisable for guys that have barely worked before on videogames but have good object oriented programming skills. Probably might be helpful for your suggestion, if i say that our game is an exploration game. Thanks to anybody who's going to answer.

• How to avoid jumping to a solution when under pressure? [closed]

  When under a particularly strict programming deadline (like an hour), if I panic at all, my tendency is to jump into coding without a real plan and hope I figure it out as I go along. Given enough time, this can work, but in an interview it's been pretty unsuccessful, if not downright counter-productive. I'm not always comfortable sitting there thinking while the clock ticks away. Is there a checklist or are there techniques to recognize when you understand the problem well enough to start coding? Maybe don't touch the keyboard for the first 5-10 minutes of the problem? At what point do you give up and code a brute-force solution with the hope of reasoning out a better solution later? When is it most productive to think and design more vs. code some experiments to and figure out the design later? Here is a list of techniques for taking a math test and another for taking an oral exam. Is there is a similar list of techniques for handling a programming problem under pressure?   On Twitter today I came across an announcement for a brand new on-line course in NetBeans 8. Since NetBeans 8 has been released during the past few months, the course is really very new. With my basic understanding of German, I've had no problem in following the course. The trainer speaks clearly and slowly and everything is very well structured. • 1360x768x32 Resolution in Windows 8 in VirtualBox

  My Lenovo ThinkPad's built-in screen maxes at 1366x768x32. I wanted to use that same resolution with Windows 8 Developer Preview inside of VirtualBox. So, what did I do? Downloaded the latest build of VirtualBox v4.1.6 (because it supports Windows 8 x64) Installed Windows 8 Developer Preview in VirtualBox as I did earlier this year. Installed Guest Additions. Ran the CustomVideoMode described in this blog post. …and quickly found out that I didn’t have the option to use 1366x768x32 inside of VirtualBox despite using the following command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata  "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1920x1080x32   So how do you fix it? If you do a little research on this resolution, then you will find it is a non-standard resolution. Even if you run the command: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32 It will still not show that resolution inside of VirtualBox. You can fix this easily by using the following command as shown below: VBoxManage.exe setextradata "[Virtual Machine Name]" CustomVideoMode1 1360x768x32 I hope that you noticed the command used the resolution of 1360 instead of 1366. Now if you go to your display option for Windows 8 inside of Virtualbox then you can select that resolution. Anyways, I hope this helps someone with a similar problem. • 301 redirect from HTTP to HTTPS - how to be sure Google is fetching the correct information?

  I'm hoping somebody might be able to provide a bit of advice on an issue I am having. I have one site where we implemented a 301 redirect on the homepage from HTTP to HTTPS. We have links on the homepage to other parts of the site that are not under SSL (in fact there is only one other page under SSL). When I go to our Webmaster Tools account I notice that we are not being provided with any webmaster information (e.g., search queries, backlinks, etc...) related to our homepage under SSL.   I am a web developer that is starting to look into hosting his own website. I would like to showcase my programming skills (PHP, MySQl, C#, Wordpress). My knowledge of languages I am OK with but the actually hosting site is where my knowledge starts to get a little shaky. I know the basics (bandwidth, sub-domains, re-write rules) but I would love your input, to help me formulate a check list of certain web-hosting services that I should be on the look-out for. Also I was wondering if there were any reliable hosting providers who give you the option to host both c# code-behinds and PHP code. As I would like to have two versions of my site, one in C# and one in PHP the hope is that if I need to look for another job this website will help me show possible employers my server side knowledge. • Advertising on personalized pages behind a login

  I am currently building a web app which requires a user to log in. After they log in, they can see the content they've added to the web app, and things that the web app has done with the content they added. The URL structure won't differentiate different users (e.g. all user's 'homepage' would be example.com/home, not something like example.com/username/home). This is much the same way that Facebook works (all FB user's messages are at facebook.com/messages, for example). This presents a problem with advertising. I know that you can use AdSense behind a login, but as far as I'm aware, that's for things like forums, where everyone sees the same things (which wouldn't be the case in this site). I also know that I could put AdSense on the pages without allowing it to log in, which would produce inferior ads. I'm fairly certain it would be against the Terms of Service to give AdSense a login to a 'dummy' account with typical content, as it would not be seeing the same thing as every other user (which is impossible, as they all see different things). So, my question is: Is there an ad network, or other method, that can serve ads behind a login, maybe based on keywords rather than content?

• Can too many 301 redirects cause a DNS error?

  For a site http://imageocd.com that I just set up I initially spelled the category "automobiles" as "autimobiles"... I know it's rediculous. I then set up over 10,000 pages behind that category e.g. http://imageocd.com/automobiles/hillman-minx-cabrio-pictures-and-wallpapers. So, I set up over 10,000 301 url redirects to change the spelling on automobiles. I just checked my Google Webmasters report and got an error saying: http://www.imageocd.com/: Googlebot can't access your siteSep 7, 2012 Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 66.7%. Could the overabundance of 301 redirects be causing this? I host 13 sites on this dedicated server and all sites are running fine. I also contacted GoDaddy and they said the server is running fine. Any ideas on what might be going on? Also, I have "canonical" set up for every URL. Could this be part of the error? Thanks.
