  • HP Pavilion DV6 doesn't recognize wireless networks

    Okay so about a few weeks after I got my laptop the wifi would connect and disconnect, off and on. And every time I troubleshoot it, a message comes up saying there's a network cable not properly plugged in or broken... It's been doing this for about a year and I usually just tap the bottom of the laptop or something and the wifi connects again but now it refuses to turn back on, how do I fix this?

    I need ffmpeg to open webcam (logitech c910) in MJPEG mode, because the webcam can give ~24 using MJPEG "protocol" and only ~10 fps using the YUYV. Another codecs (mjpeg, mpeg4) works well with webcam... But this is another story.

  • Buildcraft Minecraft mod causing crashes, NVIDIA-304xx Linux Drivers, KDE

    All is perfect, 96 fps average. Until an item tries to enter a buildcraft pipe. Tekkit instantly crashes, no error dialog. I have no idea what logs to look at for information on the crash, or how to fix it.   • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS vs Ubuntu 14.04 LTS memory usage

    My droplet has 512 MB memory and is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bits and a Rails 4 application + several workers. It's running well. I tried to deploy the same thing on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bits droplet and I've got plenty of memory related problem (can't fork). Is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS using way more RAM than Ubuntu 12.04 LTS? Is there something I should know to lower memory usage ? Should I stick with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

  • HP Envy screen brightness .. stuck

    once in a while, the screen brightness stops responding to any reason, and stays on full brightness.. for those of you that have HP Envy, you know what this means... battery suicide. the FN+* controls don't work. i also tried going in to power settings and adjusting all modes brightness to low wend of spectrum, after saving, it has no effect.. i suppose i could try rebooting as i always just put my laptop to sleep :/ anyone came across this ?

I want to copy a large amount of data over from the HDD to the USB drive with integrity checking. I thought about copying everything over and then checking with md5summer but this would take a reaally long time because its a lot of data and this is not a very powerful PC. What tool can use to do this on Linux?

  • Live Mesh starts exactly once on fresh Win7 Ultimate installation

    I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ulimate 64-bit on a formatted drive on a refurbed Lenovo PC, applied all 102 (!) windows updates, windows seems to be working fine. No quirks installing, no apps, no junkware, just straight, legal, Win7 Ultimate right from an unopened 2009 Microsoft box. Ok, breathe sigh -- Install Live Mesh (no messenger, no mail, no writer, no photo, none of the rest of the Windows Live freeware). Set up my shares, let it run overnight. watch MOE.exe in the Task-Manager perf pane to make sure it's all settled down. reboot. Ok, check that MOE is running and files are getting updated properly from other machines in the mesh. Great. HOWEVER -- when I try to launch Windows Live Mesh app from the Start jewel, I get a brief hourglass, then nothing. Reboot. Same story. result -- the shares I already posted seem to be synching properly, but I can't run the app, so I can't add and delete shares. The background process MOE seems to run, but I can't get the app going. btw, the reason I did this fresh install is I had exactly the same experience running Vista, so I wiped the machine hoping it would solve this nasty problem. Imagine my surprise! Will be grateful for clues, advice, etc, please & thanks!

    Of course this sounds like a joke question, but it's meant seriously. I remember being told by an old system administrator back in the early nineties about people asking about good FTPs for porn, and that they would as a joke always tell them to connect to 127.0.0.1. They would come back saying that there was a lot of porn at that address, but that oddly enough it seemed like they already had it all. Point being, it seems like it's been around for quite a while. Anyway. Considering that a considerable portion of the internet is devoted to porn these days, it would be interesting to know if someone has any kind of idea as to when and where the phenomena first arose? There must be some mention of this in old hacker folk lore? (Changed to CW to emphasize that this isn't about rep, but about genuine curiousity. :)

  • Recommend a wireless PCI card for Windows 7

    I have a crummy RT2500-based 11g card which does work in Win7 with the Vista driver (3.2.0.0) but it dies about every two hours or so. Googling around has led me to conclude that Ralink drivers are basically borked, and that I need something else for a stable connection. Can anyone recommend a suitable wireless adapter? It needs to be: 802.11g - draft-N nice but not at all essential. PCI - I already have far more USB devices than can possibly be good for me. Very reliable. Money isn't an object within reason. All input gratefully received!

  • Will Parallel-port dongle work on USB-to-Parallel Adapter?

    We have a niche program running on a Win2K laptop that uses a security dongle connected to a parallel port for authentication. The laptop is getting creaky and I spent a frustrating night last night shopping various websites for a new laptop that had a parallel port. Seems I'm about three years late [G]. The question I have, is, if I buy a new(ish) laptop and use a USB-to-Parallel Port adapter, will the security dongle work? I know I'm not being specific about the app, but it's one most people wouldn't have heard of anyways. I've been guessing the answer to my question is no, since the app won't know to send a request out to the non-existent port. But, if the process actually is that the dongle sends a message INTO the computer every now and then, then it might work. And, I'm not sure whether the dongle is only needed at program startup time or randomly. The dongle is a 'permanent' addition to the old laptop. This is all about the money. We can have a newly-updated version of the program (which won't add any features we need) for the princely sum of $2700. Or we can spend $500 on a refurbed laptop still running WinXP, add a 30 buck adapter and keep the same solid, stolid performance we've come to appreciate. But it all comes down to the dongle behaviour. Oh, and a dock won't work. The whole laptop issue is about moving about the various nooks and crannies of the building with laptop in hand.   • Connection Issue

    Desktop computer, connected directly into a Comcast modem. Every so often, at seemingly random intervals, my connection will drop. This could be while in the middle of browsing, or when I'm not even at the computer. When the connection drops, the modem still shows 4 green lights. The modem is connected to a splitter (cable and internet in same room), and then directly to the wall. To recover from the problem, I am forced to restart my computer, at which point everything works fine again. I have tried an ipconfig/release and renew, it tells me that it is unable to contact the DHCP server, and thus can't renew. I have updated the NICs driver, no luck. I have changed the ethernet cord, no luck. I have had Comcast replace the modem, no luck. The only thing I can think of that hasn't been replaced is the cords connecting the modem to the wall and the splitter. Can anyone think of anything else I may be able to do to isolate what's causing the issue?

    When I run wireshark on a wired network it works fine and reports all of the packets. When I run it on a wireless network though I only see my own traffic. The wireless card I have is supposed to support packet capture and go into premiscous mode, but I don't see any other system traffic. What is wrong?

  • When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

    I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too. Here are the tempreture logs leading up to the latest crash. The GPU dosn't hit 80, and I've hit 90 with no crash on firmark.   • Cursor moves when left or right clicking on trackpad

    I'm on an acer aspire v5-572p. When I am using the touchpad, and I left or right click something, the cursor moves every time by a couple pixels because unfortunately the clicking area, is also a touch area. I've tried switching to the synaptics mouse drivers provided on the Acer driver website, but the same problem exist. I have researched this problem and there is a fix for this issue in Ubuntu, but I am running Windows 8.1 x64. The problem also existed when I was on 8.0 How do I stop the cursor from moving on a click?
