• Java Errors with jRuby on Rails on Google App Engine

• GridView doesn't remember state between postbacks

  Hi, I have a simple ASP page with databound grid (bound to an object source). The grid is within the page of a wizard and has a 'select' checkbox for each row. In one stage of the wizard, I bind the GridView: protected void Wizard1_NextButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) { ... // Bind and display matches GridViewMatches.EnableViewState = true; GridViewMatches.DataSource = getEmailRecipients(); GridViewMatches.DataBind(); And when the finish button is clicked, I iterate through the rows and check what's selected: protected void Wizard1_FinishButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) { // Set the selected values, depending on the checkboxes on the grid. foreach (GridViewRow gr in GridViewMatches.Rows) { Int32 personID = Convert.ToInt32(gr.Cells[0].Text); CheckBox selected = (CheckBox) gr.Cells[1].FindControl("CheckBoxSelectedToSend"); But at this stage GridViewMatches.Rows.Count = 0! I don't re-bind the grid, I shouldn't need to, right? I expect the view-state to maintain the state. (Also, if I do rebind the grid, my selection checkboxes will be cleared) NB: This page also dynamically adds user controls in OnInit method. I have heard that it might mess with the view state, but as far as I can tell, I am doing it correctly and the viewstate for those added controls seems to work (values are persisted between postbacks) Thanks a lot in advance for any help! Ryan UPDATE: Could this be to do with the fact I am setting the datasource programatically? I wondered if the asp engine was databinding the grid during the page lifecycle to a datasource that was not yet defined. (In a test page, the GridView is 'automatically' databound'. I don't want the grid to re-bound I just want the values from the viewstate from the previous post! Also, I have this in the asp header: ViewStateEncryptionMode="Never" - this was to resolve an occasional 'Invalid Viewstate Validation MAC' message Thanks again Ryan

• Android: Dialog themed activity not visible

  I have an activity which, when started, needs to check if the user is authenticated. If not, I need to display an interface to authenticate. I do this with another activity, which has a dialog theme, and I start it in onResume() with flags NO_HISTORY and EXCLUDE_FROM_RECENTS. Everything works fine when starting the application for the first time. But I have a feature that resets login after some time, if the user is not in an activity. When I test this, I start the applicatio, enter the password, then move back to home. Then when I enter the application again, the background darkens as if the dialog would show, but it doesn't. At this point, if I press the back button, the darkening from the background activity disappears for a second, then the dialog finally appears. So far I didn't want to use a Dialog instead of an Activity, because I consider them problematic sometimes and less encapsulated and this part has to be quite secure. • Storage model for various user setting and attributes in database?

  I'm currently trying to upgrade a user management system for one web application. This web application is used to provide remote access to various networking equipment for educational purposes. All equipment is assigned to various pods, which users can book for periods of time. The current system is very simple - just 2 user types: administrators and students. All their security and other attributes are mostly hardcoded. I want to change this to something like the following model: user <-- (1..n)profile <--- (1..n) attributes. I.e. user can be assigned several profiles and each profile can have multiple attributes. At runtime all profiles and attributes are merged into single active profile. Some examples of attributes i'm planning to implement: EXPIRATION_DATE - single value, value type: date, specifies when user account will expire; ACCESS_POD - single value, value type: ref to object of Pod class, specifies which pod the user is allowed to book, user profile can have multiple such attributes with different values; TIME_QUOTA - single value, value type: integer, specifies maximum length of time for which student can reserve equipment. CREDIT_CHARGING - multi valued, specifies how much credits will be assigned to user over period of time. (Reservation of devices will cost credits, which will regenerate over time); Security permissions and user preferences can end up as profile or user attributes too: i.e CAN_CREATE_USERS, CAN_POST_NEWS, CAN_EDIT_DEVICES, FONT_SIZE, etc.. This way i could have, for example: students of course A will have profiles STUDENT (with basic attributes) and PROFILE A (wich grants acces to pod A). Students of course B will have profiles: STUDENT, PROFILE B(wich grants to pod B and have increased time quotas). I'm using Spring and Hibernate frameworks for this application and MySQL for database. For this web application i would like to stay within boundaries of these tools. The problem is, that i can't figure out how to best represent all these attributes in database. I also want to create some kind of unified way of retrieveing these attributes and their values. Here is the model i've come up with. Student has a list of courses he attends, also he has a list of properties, that is all for this student. Next, Course entitity. It may contain a list of students that attend it. But in fact, the whole structure looks like this: the starting point is Student, with it's PK we can look a list of his properties, then we look into the STUDENT_COURSE and extract both FK of the Course entity and also the Status of the combination, it would look like "Student named bla bla, with all his properties, attends math and the status of it is "ACTIVE". now, quotation 1) Each DAO instance is responsible for one primary domain object or entity. If a domain object has an independent lifecycle, it should have its own DAO. 2) The DAO is responsible for creations, reads (by primary key), updates, and deletions -- that is, CRUD -- on the domain object. Now, first question is What are entities in my case? Student, Course, Student_Course, Status = all except for StudentProperties? Do I have to create a separate DAO for every object?

• Setting Parameters from another Parameter In SSRS

  I was able to get this working is SSRS 2008, but do to the fact that my company only has 2005 servers I need to downgrade the report to 2005. The idea is for a given person name there are two key fields EntityType and EntityId So I have a parameter from a dataset where the Label is the Name and the value is EntityType_EntityId I use the split function to take the left and right sides of from _ In 2008, I set the query parameters of the dataset to the split function and it works In 2005, I set the Default Value of each Report Parameters Now when I run the report and put textboxes showing the value of the parameters, the values are shown correctly but the query does not run. I am guessing that this is a lifecycle issue being Get Name Parameter Run Report THEN Set Parameters = Split of Name But the problem with that is the second time I run the report I should get result and I do not. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong. I guess I can pass in the underscore delimted string to the stored procedure and parse it there, but my question is can this be done in the report? Reason being other callers will pass in the parameters as two seperate values.

• Should Development / Testing / QA / Staging environments be similar?

  Hi all, After much time and effort, we're finally using maven to manage our application lifecycle for development. We still unfortunately use ANT to build an EAR before deploying to Test / QA / Staging. My question is, while we made that leap forward, developers are still free to do as they please for testing their code. One issue that we have is half our team is using Tomcat to test on and the other half is using Jetty. I prefer Jetty slightly over Tomcat, but regardless we using WAS for all the other environments. My question is, should we develop on the same application server we're deploying to? We've had numerous bugs come up from these differences in environments. Tomcat, Jetty, and WAS are different under the hood. My opinion is that we all should develop on what we're deploying to production with so we don't have the problem of well, it worked fine on my machine. While I prefer Jetty, I just assume we all work on the same environment even if it means deploying to WAS which is slow and cumbersome. What are your team dynamics like? Our lead developers stepped down from the team and development has been a free for all since then. Walter

I checked on the internet where it was suggested that cURL will send multipart/form-data when a custom headers is specified to Content-Type: multipart/form-data. $headers = array( 'Content-Type' => 'multipart/form-data; boundary='.$boundary ); This didn't work for me either when I print_r(curl_getinfo()) it showed [content_type] => text/html; charset=UTF-8 Which means cURL sent a default headers I also read that sending/uploading a file with cURL will cause data to be send as multipart/form-data. Part Two: You are provided with the Northwind Database and the attached DB relationship diagram. Please create a page which provides users with the following functionality. You don’t need to be too concerned with the presentation detail of the page. Select a customer from a list, and see all the orders placed by that customer. For the same customer, find all their orders which are Beverages and the quantity is more than 5. I was aware of setting the right balance of difficulty on this as there is an hour's test. I was able to complete the practical test in under 30 mins using SQLDatasource and the query designer in visual studio and the test questions, I am looking to see how they approach it logically and whether they use the tools available. • Network Data Packet connectivity intent

  I am writing an Android application which can enable and disable the Network Data packet connection. I am also using one broadcast receiver to check the Network Data packet connection. I have registered broadcast receiver and provided required permission in Manifest file. But when I run this application it changes the connection state and after that it crashes. But when I don't include this broadcast receiver it works fine. I am not able to see any kind of log which can provide some clue. Android was looking for this file in current package i.e com.rakesh.simplewidget; I just moved connectivityReciever.java file to com.rakesh.simplewidget package and problem was solved.

• Subsonic, child records, and collections

  Hi, I've been working with subsonic for a few weeks now, and it is working really well. However, I've just run into an issue with child objects with additional partial properties. Some of it is probably me just not understanding the .Net object lifecycle. I have an object - search. This has a few properties like permissions and stuff, and it links to a child table called search_options. In my Asp.Net app, it loops through these search options and creates controls. Then on postback, it grabs the values and assigns it back to a "value" property on the search_option. This value property is a simple string that's defined in a partial class. I then want to create a method on the search object, called PerformSearch. This then loops through the child search_options, and performs a custom query based on the "value" property. However, even though I assign the "value" property to the child search_option, when I access it later via the search.search_options collection, it is null. I'm guessing that maybe because it's accessing it in two different places, it performs another lazy load from the DB and the value is lost? Is there a way to tell the class that it's already loaded or something? or a way to access it so it's not reloaded from the DB? • dotNet Templated, Repeating, Databound ServerControl: Modifying underlying ServerControl data per te

  I have a server control that wraps an underlying class which manages a number of indexes to track where it is in a dataset (ie: RenderedRecordCount, ErroredRecordCount, NewRecordCount, etc.). I've got the server control rendering great, but OnDataBinding I'm having an issue as to seems to happen after CreateChildControls and before Render (both of which properly manage the iteration of the underlying indexes). While I'm somewhat familiar with the ASP.NET page lifecycle, this one seems to be beyond me at the moment. So... How do I hook into the iterative process OnDataBinding uses so I can manage the underlying indexes? Will I have to iterate over the ITemplates myself, managing the indexes as I go or is there an easier solution? [edit: Agh... writing the problem out is very cathartic... I'm thinking this is exactly what I will need to do...] Also... I implemented the iteration of the underlying indexes during CreateChildControls originally in the belief that was the proper place to hook in for events like OnDataBinding (thinking it was done as the controls were being .Add'd). Now it seems that this may actually be unnecessary. So I guess the secondary question is: What happens during CreateChildControls? Are the unadulterated (read: with various <%-tags in place) controls added to the .Controls collection without any other processing?

• Can you have a Dynamic Data Field which consists of a list of fields?

  This is a purely theoretical question (at least until I start trying to implement it) but here goes. I wrote a web form a long time ago which has a configurable section for getting information. Basically for some customers there are no fields, for other customers there are up to 20 fields. I got it working by dynamically creating the fields at just the right time in the page lifecycle and going through a lot of headaches. 2 years later, I need to make some pretty big updates to this web form and there are some nifty new technologies. I've worked with ASP.NET Dynamic Data just a bit and, well, I half-crazed plan just occurred to me: The Ticket object has a one-to-many relationship to ExtendedField, we'll call that relationship Fields for brevity. Using that, the idea would be to create a FieldTemplate that dynamically generated the list of fields and displayed it. The big questions here would probably be: 1) Can a single field template resolve to multiple web controls without breaking things? 2) Can dynamic data handle updating/inserting multiple rows in such a fashion? 3) There was a third question I had a few minutes ago, but coworkers interrupted me and I forgot. So now the third question is: what is the third question? So basically, does this sound like it could work or am I missing a better/more obvious solution?

  What I am trying to achieve here is to display a number of LinkButtons in a RadGrid Column. The buttons are generated from a collection property member of the bound grid row item. The CollectionLinkButton control is nothing more than a asp:Panel derived control that populates its Child Controls from "DataItem.SomeCollection" and this is working fine. • Android: restful API service

  Hey, I'm looking to make a service which I can use to make calls to a web based rest api. I've spent a couple of days looking through stackoverflow.com, reading books and looking at articles whilst playing about with some code and I can't get anything which I'm happy with. Basically I want to start a service on app init then I want to be able to ask that service to request a url and return the results. In the meantime I want to be able to display a progress window or something similar. I've created a service currently which uses IDL, I've read somewhere that you only really need this for cross app communication, so think these needs stripping out but unsure how to do callbacks without it. Also when I hit the post(Config.getURL("login"), values) the app seems to pause for a while (seems weird - thought the idea behind a service was that it runs on a different thread!) Currently I have a service with post and get http methods inside, a couple of AIDL files (for two way communication), a ServiceManager which deals with starting, stopping, binding etc to the service and I'm dynamically creating a Handler with specific code for the callbacks as needed. I don't want anyone to give me a complete code base to work on, but some pointers would be greatly appreciated; even if it's to say I'm doing it completely wrong. I'm pretty new to Android and Java dev so if there are any blindingly obvious mistakes here - please don't think I'm a rubbish developer, I'm just wet behind the ears and would appreciate being told exactly where I'm going wrong. • Using javascript to limit survey choices to three unique values

  I'm required to use a limited survey application, and have to adapt the provided code to meet more advanced functionality. I need to create a weighted ranking question, so users can select their top three choices and the data will go into the survey application and be accessible in the survey reports. The application only supports 2 types of questions (text fill & multiple choice) but I can alter the code, as long as it still sends the form data back to the survey application. The code is set up so it will show a drop-down menu of 0-3 for each option. Now I want to limit the user's choices so they can only select one "1" "2" or "3", three choices total. Ideally, if the user already had "2" selected for one option and they tried to select it for another option, it would set the first "2" as "0" or blank. Is this possible to do with javascript? If so, does anyone know of a site that might show code like this, or provide similar enough examples that I could adapt it? • How to rename goals in Maven?

  In the Maven document Introduction to the Build Lifecycle, a goal of display:time is described that outputs the current time. The plugin is as follows: ... <plugin> <groupId>com.mycompany.example</groupId> <artifactId>maven-touch-plugin</artifactId> <version>1.0</version> <executions> <execution> <phase>process-test-resources</phase> <goals> <goal>timestamp</goal> </goals> </execution> </executions> </plugin> ... I have several questions relating to this plugin: How can I change the name of the goal to, for example, foo:bar? (Why does neither display nor time appear anywhere in the XML fragment? How can you tell, from looking at the fragment, what goals it defines?) How can I manually run this goal? (For similar constructs, the equivalent of mvn display:time sometimes works, but this doesn't work consistently.) How can I see if this goal exists? (i.e. list available goals; this question suggests this is impossible.)

• How to append a row to a TableViewSection in Titanium?

  I'm developing an iPhone application in Titanium, and need to append a row to a particular TableViewSection. I can't do this on page load, as it's done dynamically by the user throughout the lifecycle of the application. The documentation says that the TableViewSection has an add method which takes two arguments, but I can't make it work. Here's my existing code: for(var i = 0; i <= product_count; i++){ productsTableViewSection.add( Ti.UI.createTableViewRow({ title:'Testing...' }) ); } That is just passing one argument in, and that causes Titanium to die with an uncaught exception: 2010-04-26 16:57:18.056 MyApplication[72765:207] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Invalid update: invalid number of rows in section 2. The number of rows contained in an existing section after the update (2) must be equal to the number of rows contained in that section before the update (1), plus or minus the number of rows inserted or deleted from that section (0 inserted, 0 deleted).' 2010-04-26 16:57:18.056 MyApplication[72765:207] Stack: ( The exception looks like it did add the row, but it's not allowed to for some reason. Since the documentation says that TableViewSection takes in "view" and "row", I tried the following: for(var i = 0; i <= product_count; i++){ productsTableViewSection.add( Ti.UI.createView({}), Ti.UI.createTableViewRow({ title:'Testing...' }) ); } The above code doesn't throw the exception, but it gives a [WARN]: [WARN] Invalid type passed to function. expected: TiUIViewProxy, was: TiUITableViewRowProxy in -[TiUITableViewSectionProxy add:] (TiUITableViewSectionProxy.m:62) TableViewSections don't seem to support any methods like appendRow, or insertRow, so I don't know where else to go with this. I've looked through the KitchenSink app, but there are no examples that I could find of adding a row to a TableViewSection. Any help is appreciated.

• Dynamic Control loading at wrong time?

  This one is a little... odd. Basically I have a form I'm building using ASP.NET Dynamic Data, which is going to utilize several custom field templates. I've just added another field to the FormView, with it's own custom template, and the form is loading that control twice for no apparent reason. Worse yet, the first time it loads the template, the Row is not ready yet and I get the error message: {"Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control."} I'm accessing the Row variable in a LinqDataSource OnSelected event in order to get the child object... Now for the wierd part: If I reorder the fields a little, the one causing the problem no longer gets loaded twice. Any thoughts? EDIT: I've noticed that Page_Load gets called on the first load (when Row throws an exception if you try to use it) but does NOT get called the second time around. If that helps any... Right now managing it by just catching and ignoring the exception, but still a little worried that things will break if I don't find the real cause. EDIT 2: I've traced the problem to using FindControl recursively to find other controls on the page. Apparently FindControl can cause the page lifecycle events (at least up to page_load) to fire... and this occurs before that page "should" be loading so it's dynamic data "stuff" isn't ready yet.
