• Recreation of DB using "mysql mydb < mydb.sql" is really slow when the table has tens of millions of

  It seems that a MySQL database that has a table with tens of millions of records will get a big INSERT INTO statement when the following mysqldump some_db > some_db.sql is done to back up the database. (is it 1 insert statement that handles all the records?) So when reconstructing the DB using mysql some_db < some_db.sql then the CPU is hardly busy (about 1.8% usage by the mysql process... I don't see a mysqld either?) and also the hard disk doesn't seem to be too busy... Last time, the whole restore process took 5 hours. Is there a way to make it faster? Such as, when doing mysqldump, can it break the INSERT statement into shorter ones, so that the mysql doesn't need to parse the line so hard when restoring the DB?

• Service Broker not working after database restore

  Have a working Service Broker set up on a server, we're in the process of moving to a new server but I can't seem to get Service Broker set up on the new box. Have done the obvious (to me) things like Enabling Broker on the DB, dropping the route, services, contract, queues and even message type and re adding them, setting ALTER QUEUE with STATUS ON SELECT * FROM sys.service_queues gives me a list of the queues, including my own two, which show as activation_enabled, receive_enabled etc. Needless to say the queues aren't working. When I drop messages into them nothing goes in and nothing comes out. Any ideas? I'm sure there's something really obvious I've missed...

• Server RAID 5 failed...all I have left is my compiled website

  Yesterday, 2 of the 3 drives in my dev server's RAID 5 decided to die on me (with no warning). I've come to grips with the fact that my data is most likely lost unless I shell out some major bucks for professional data-resortoration. People, don't be an idiot like me and treat your RAID as a data backup! Luckily I published the site about 4 hours before my files went bye-bye. Is there any way to run some [magical] program to restore my compiled site to their original files? Also: I develop on one machine with the files stored on the server...is there some visual studio 2010 web cache on my local machine (the one that didn't crash) that I may be able to use?

  I have some class for ssh support - it uses jsch internally. It's clear for me - activity is re-created and all state is lost. Unfortunately, my SshSupport class object is lost as well. It's pretty easy to store gui state for dynamically changed/added objects (using put/get serializable etc methods). But I have no idea how to prevent my ssh object, ssh connected session being lost. Since my class is not serializable, I can't save it to bundle. Also, even if I make my SshSupport class serializable, jsch objects it uses still are not serializable. So what is the best way to solve this?

  This current project requires that the DB be dumped, encrypted and pushed to s3. I'm wondering what might be some "best practices" for such a task. As of now I'm using a pretty straight ahead method but would like to have some better ideas where security is concerned. • Automatic Backup and Restore MySQL db from Web Server to Local Machine

  I have a web app that is supposed to be run on a single local machine (kiosk display), but I want the option to let a user make changes on the web (from any PC) and update the instance on their local PC (kiosk display). From what i imagine, the MySQL instance on the web will just be replace the MySQL instance on the local (kiosk display) machine. Does anyone know of a way to do this? After my server grow larger, i think it take too much space. So tehre is a way to solve this problem ? maybe a software that can track changes on our php code.   I'm trying to write a simple program that will backup my flash drive. I want it to work automatically and silently in the background, and I also want it to be as quick as possible. The thing is, resetting all the access times is useless to me, and something I want to avoid. I know I can read the access times and set them back, but I bet it will fail one day in the future. It would be much simpler to read the files without ever changing it. Also, what is the fastest way to do this? What differences would there be between, say, a flash drive and an external hard drive. I am writing this in C#, as it is the simplest way to do it and it will probably last more generations of Windows..

• Parsing a blackberry .ipd file

  I recently lost my Blackberry. When I discovered it was gone very shortly afterwards and called it, the sim card had already been removed. I ain't seeing that Blackberry again. Ok. I am out $300, but at least my data is backed up. I had an older working Blackberry fortunately and I got a new sim card and proceeded to restore my data using Blackberry Desktop Manager. 7000+ emails, hundreds of autotext entries, sms messages, calendar events, all backing up. Looking good. Lo and behold! My Address Book contacts refuse to back up? I try advanced, and it is greyed out as an option to restore. Far more frustrating than losing my bberry in the first place is wrangling with software that defies human logic. Ok, now I guess I will have to enter all 327 names by hand. That is, if I can read the .ipd file. I have tried the free version of ABC Amber Blackberry editor, but when I open the .ipd file, the contacts just do not show up. I am beginning to feel like the gods are conspiring against me. Then I found this: http://jabide.com/2009/03/parse-blackberry-ipd-files/ He posted a perl script that claims to extract the files. I copied and pasted the code and it did list all the different databases in my .ipd file, I was elated that a cool solution like this was published. I followed the instructions and garbled data with some discernible ascii was sent to standard output unlike a .csv file like he said it would. This is enough to make a grown man cry. Does anyone out there have a solution to extract my address book contacts from an .ipd file?

  I am using AWS RDS for MySQL. With it comes on backup, I understand that amazon provides two types of backup - automated backup and database (DB) snapshot. The difference is explain in here - http://aws.amazon.com/rds/faqs/#23. However, I am still confuse if should I stick to automated backup only or both automated and manual (db snapshots). What do you think guys? What's the setup of your own? I heard to others that automated backup is not reliable due to some unrecoverable database when the DB instance is crashed so the DB snapshots are the way to rescue you. If I will do daily DB snapshots as similar settings to automated backup, I have gonna pay much bunch of bucks. Hope anyone could enlighten me or advise me the right set up. Thanks. James

I booted into single user mode and backed it up via cd / sudo -i tar cvpzf backup.tgz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/dev --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/backup.tgz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys / 3 . I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 1204 on my new laptop (It is Dell) 4 . I boot into single user mode 5 . I backup the existing /boot directory 6 . I untar my backup to restore on to the Dell sudo tar xvfpz backup.tgz -C / 7 . I restore the previous /boot directory again 8 . I boot it up, and my profile and settings are loaded ok but, Ubuntu shows that there is no Sound Card.. I cannot use unity to drag and change volume. I noticed that the network card also doesnt work. ** How do you make ubuntu recognize changed hardware, if the hardware is already configured for a different laptop? Does anyone know?**
