• How to reset video/display drivers in Vista without restarting OS?

  Currently I have to reboot my system if an external monitor is hooked up for it to be correctly detected and used. I think it would be faster to restart/reset the video or display drivers instead. How do I do this under Vista? I seem to remember from an old laptop using a Windows command-line command that would restart the wireless networking card device when it crashed. Is there something like that for video drivers? Background/Reason Because people rightfully ask why? - This is part of a larger problem which I'm waiting for resolution on from the manufacturer. In the meantime I'm looking for the above quick fix. Actually my video card often crashes my laptop when attaching an external monitor and trying to detect or use it. No solution from vendor yet and latest drivers do the same irksome behaviour. Windows says: A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

• Writing an internal disk from IMG, what XP software to use?

  I am trying to install the Chromium OS on an EEE PC 901, and I have succeeded in using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card. Since the OS speed is limited by slow card access, I'd like to install the Chromium OS on the second, unused, internal SSD Drive, D:. However, Image Writer doesn't allow me to restore an internal drive from an IMG file. To be clear: I boot in XP on C: then run Image Writer to install the Chromium OS. Does anyone know how I can either convince Image Writer that D: is a removable drive or know of alternative program that will let me restore D: from an IMG file (non-windows file system)?

• PC monitors shut off and system hangs while playing 3D games, but sound continues - Diagnosis?

  Two days ago, I started running into a problem with my Windows PC: The PC's two connected monitors simultaneously lose signal and go black (as though the PC had been powered off). The keyboard's Numlock, Capslock, and Scroll Lights will become "stuck" in their current positions, as though the PC is hung. (For example, the Numlock light on the keyboard remains lit regardless of me pressing the Numlock key repeatedly.) No keyboard input does anything. (Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Ctrl+C, etc.) However -- Whatever sound/music the PC was playing continues to play, and the PC's fans continue running, so the PC hasn't powered itself off or rebooted itself. Opening up the case, the graphics card is pretty hot to the touch. I had this happen 3 times in one evening. In all cases, I was playing a game with 3D graphics when the problem occurred (Torchlight, Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering 2012, Avadon: The Black Fortress demo). I have yet to have the problem happen when I'm not playing a game. This system has been running stable for about 2.5 years prior to this. I didn't make any changes to the system prior to the problem starting to occur. System specs: OS: Windows 7 64-bit Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz Video Card: XFX GeForce 9800 GT 512 MB Motherboard: Foxconn P45A-S LGA 775 Intel ATX RAM: Corsair 4 GB (2x 2GB) DDR2-800 (PC2 6400) Full specs: New PC 2008 Troubleshooting tried so far (the problem occurred again after taking each of these steps, one at a time): Updated the video drivers with the latest drivers from NVidia's site. Opened up the case and cleaned out the video card and processor fans (both were pretty dirty). Installed and ran temperature monitor software. The processor idles at about 50 degrees C, and goes up to about 63 degrees C while playing a game (seems on the warm side, but not excessively so?). The software wasn't able to report the temperature of the GPU -- not sure this particular GPU supports software temperature readout? My initial diagnosis is that maybe the GPU is on its last legs (given that it seems to be running pretty hot, and the problem only occurs while playing 3D games). Does this seem likely? Or is it likely that this problem is caused by the processor, RAM, or motherboard? Or could this be a software issue of some kind? Thanks for any advice!

The script itself works fine (it copies the contents of the cards), but the automounting and execution of the script is where I'm having issues. What I'm really after is a solution that automounts each of the cards as they are inputted into the reader; and executes a script for them (this will involve copying their contents to another directory). • Realtek HD Audio playing weird with certain video formats

  Hi, I have a Gigabyte motherboard with an onboard Realtek HD sound card. The card is working perfectly everywhere, except for a single video format, where the voice is distorted, sounds as if it's been passed through a metal tube. Been googling for this, but couldn't find an answer anywhere. The movie plays fine on other systems (got Linux everywhere else), but on this one (winXP-x64-sp2) it just doesn't. • Recommendations for a JetDirect print server for USB 2.0 printers?

  I have been using some older HP JetDirect 300x print servers for a variety of parallel printers over the years. These things work great for every printer I have tried them with, including HP's, Dell's, and even a Mountbatten braille embosser! These have been a boon for printers whose internal network cards fail, but whose parallel ports continue working. I don't have to throw away the $500 printer that is one year and a week old, and can keep using it for many, many years. Now that very few printers are coming with parallel ports, but are coming solely with USB connections and network cards. When the network card fails but the printer is still usable, I want to continue using it on the network with a JetDirect card. In summary: Does anyone have any recommendations for JetDirect cards that will work as well with USB 2.0 printers of unspecified manufacturer that my old JetDirect 300x cards do?

• Dell Dimension running Fedora12 does a "Sleeping Beauty" and I am not am not a "handsome prince"!

  Dell Dimension 2350 with a Pentium IV processor and integrated video and network chips running Fedora12 does a "Sleeping Beauty" and I, apparently, am not am not a "handsome prince"! The system puts video and network to sleep and it will not wakeup. I have heard of this problem on laptops, but this is a tower. Any ideas or help is appreciated. I tried to ping the network card from another system and ping fails. The logs indicate that the system continues to be active. Pressing keyboard short-cut keys makes the disk light blink but neither the video or network card comes alive. Failing all else, are there any Linux commands that I could schedule in cron to pulse video and network adapters hourly that will keep them awake? Or, should I wait on Fedora13? Before this machine, I built a Dimension 2400 with Pentium IV and it had the same problem. Fedora9 on the same hardware is fine.

  I'd like to find a small linux box with the following specifications: Small (mini-ITX size is OK) Fanless Runs Debian At least two gigabit network interfaces WLAN that supports "host ap" with hostapd + mac80211 in AP mode Can encrypt AES at least 10 megabytes per second Total cost $300 or less Solutions from multiple parts also accepted - I can buy an external network card etc. and build the box myself if the components are available. If you don't know about the "host ap" thing, just suggest your solution, I'll find out if I can get that resolved. If I can't get all that, I can possibly skip the "runs Debian" part, and I can definitely skip the hostapd part if the box can be a wireless access point with multiple ESSIDs out of the box. Something like Asus RT-N16 is close - doesn't run Debian easily, and probably doesn't encrypt AES fast enough. Something like Zotac ZBOX HD-ID11 is also close - no idea which WLAN card it has and it lacks second gigabit interface, but otherwise nice.

  I am using wireshark in monitor mode to capture all the frame. I buffered all the QosData in order to calculate the biterate of each station on the network. I calculate the biterate but it is not an accurate value. what i need to know is when the station use the network alone and when it uses it with another station? i know if two station with different wifi card for exemple ( st1 802.11g 54 Mb/s, st2 802.11n 300 Mb/s) if st1 uses alone the line the biterate used is 28 MB/s and if st2 uses alone the network the bit rate increase to approximately 150Mb/s but if the two station use the network at the same time the st1 lost about 80% of its bit rate because of the st1 wifi card thx in advance

• Ubuntu 9.10 x64 has no sound, while Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit does.

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 x64 recently. Up until now I've been on 32 bit Ubuntu. For the first time since installing it, I went and tried to play a Youtube video. There was no sound. So a quick test to the system reveals that nothing will play sound (And I've tried turning the volume too full, as some have said output is quite quiet, but there is no sound at all). Further research shows that in sound preferences, the only output device listed was Dummy Output. Why would it work in 9.04 x86 and not 9.10 x64? While booting up, and occasionally with the sound preferences dialog open, I get a loud click (even though it isn't recognising my sound card). It's a Dell Studio 17 laptop. I'm not sure what the exact model of sound card is.

• Unable to extend desktop

  I'm trying to hook up my TV to my computer as a gaming/multimedia center but I'm having troubles setting it up. I have a custom built machine running Windows 7 RC. It has an ATI Radeon 4800 video card with 2 dvi output and 1 S-video output. I have an s-video to composite adapter that connects to my tv. (It's an old TV with only Cable, composite, and s-video connections). I can switch the desktop to my TV without a problem, but I can't duplicate or extend my desktop onto it. I've installed the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center, but it won't let it work any more readily than Windows would. Any suggestions? Would using an s-video cable instead of the adapter change anything? (The only reason I use the adapter is because it came with the graphics card) (Edit) I installed the latest drivers and I can now duplicate the screen (show on one monitor and on the TV), but I still can't extend the desktop.

  Is there any way to specify which monitor the console is displayed on in Linux? Details: I have a 3 monitor setup with 2 video cards. When I boot the computer, the BIOS displays on the PCI graphics card (which has a small monitor). When starting Linux, the console is displayed on the same monitor. Is there a way to have the console output on a different monitor? I'm using the vesafb framebuffer. I don't see a way in my BIOS to change the default video card.

  Hi everyone, I am looking for a new laptop/netbook and I have two simple requirements: must be small (10-12in screen) and light (<=3-3.5pounds); must work with a dock into which I can put a PCI or PCI Express card. Basically, I have no performance requirements. Discontinued or low-end are fine. All I want is something easy to carry that when at work I can use a PCI/PCI Express card with to do multi-head. Eg, if an Acer Aspire 1410 fitted the second requirement I would by one in a blink. The only solution with which I am acquainted are Thinkpads that can go into the Thinkpad Advanced Dock. • ATI Radeon 5850 I cant seem to get 3 monitors up at the same time. 2 Monitors and a HDTV but still.

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

  I installed Debian with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 on a Hyper-V virtual machine. I had to add a legacy network card. I follow this tutorial http://www.microsofttranslator.com/bv.aspx?ref=Internal&from=ru&to=en&a=http://blogs.technet.com/b/abeshkov/archive/2011/03/17/hyperv_5f00_debian.aspx to add Hyper-V driver but when I reboot with the new kernel it crash during bootup. • Wireless DHCP doesn't work until wired Ethernet plugged in

  A client of mine has an Asus R1F tablet running Windows XP Tablet SP3. It has an Intel 3945ABG wireless card; wired Ethernet is a Realtek something-or-other. In the past few days, it's developed an odd problem: WiFi authenticates, but can't get an address via DHCP. plug in wired Ethernet - both interfaces get good addresses unplug cable, WiFi continues to work until shutdown. Next morning, repeat process. I've tried: turning WiFi off/on (there's a slider switch) disabling/re-enabling via Device Mangler uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the 3945ABG... changing from Intel Pro/SET to Windows Wireless Zero Config (and back) restarting the router changing the static DHCP assignments at the router upgrading the router firmware, just on general principles The router/access point is pfSense 1.2.3RC1 (was 1.2.2); wireless card is Atheros-based. None of the 12 other users (5 with tablets) are having problems.

• Connect server to router with workstation in between?

  I have a server (9 yr old Dell with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition) and a workstation (Laptop with Vista) which are both connected to a router. The workstation is able to access the server via web browser for testing my web development projects. Since the server is old and does not have a wireless card, I am wondering if it is possible to connect the server directly to the workstation while maintaining the ability to connect to the server from the workstation. The reason is that the computers are in a separate room from the router and I am trying to limit the amount of wires on the floor, along with trying to avoid buying more hardware (like a wireless card).   Well i have a server with two LAN Card Installed.I have a server in U.S and one in India.I have created a GRE tunnel to route all traffic from U.S Server to my Indian Server.My Traffic has UDP,TCP,HTTP,etc Traffic.Now i have two LAN Card on my Indian Server.Well i have configured two IPs on the system for some of my needs on the system.One is a /30 and another is a /24.Well now i want the /30 IP to talk to my /24 IP.Lets take a e.g the IPs are 180.151.130.34 - /30 and 103.243.19.254 -/24 I want to forward all the TCP,UDP,HTTP,etc like traffic coming to 180.151.130.34 to 103.243.19.254.In the sense i want to make them talk to each other in a way if a TCP/UDP Packet comes to 180.151.130.34 it should be forwarded to 103.243.19.254 and then that packet is sent back by 103.243.19.254 to 180.151.130.34.I am not able to configure this part.Can anyone tell me step by step how to do so? Well i forgot to specify i am using Windows Server 2008. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks in advance.

The system puts video and network to sleep and it will not wakeup. I have heard of this problem on laptops, but this is a tower. Any ideas or help is appreciated. I tried to ping the network card from another system and ping fails. The logs indicate that the system continues to be active. Pressing keyboard short-cut keys makes the disk light blink but neither the video or network card comes alive. Failing all else, are there any Linux commands that I could schedule in cron to pulse video and network adapters hourly that will keep them awake? Or, should I wait on Fedora13? Before this machine, I built a Dimension 2400 with Pentium IV and it had the same problem. Fedora9 on the same hardware is fine.

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • Hyper-V extensible virtual switch disables network

  I just installed the Hyper-V role on my Windows Server 2012. It comes with something called a "Hyper-V extensible virtual switch". I assigned it to the only network card in my server. By doing so, the network card became useless/disabled/inactive/.. because the virtual switch disabled all features (IPv4, IPv6, Client for Microsoft Networks, ...) on the network adapter. Is this supposed to happen? I admit I've no idea what this "extensible virtual switch" actually does. A short explanation would be nice as well.
