  • How can I keep a VPN connection alive?

    I've been trying to find a way to run a torrent client strictly through a VPN. I am running Ubuntu 9.10, and use Ktorrent. I can connect to vpn.itshidden.com but I am worried about the connection dropping if I'm away from my computer. Any help would be appreciated.

    I've just recently purchased a USB wi-fi adapter and have been using the software (for Windows XP) that comes with it to search for and connect to networks, but it's really quite slow and featureless. Are there free/OSS alternatives for Windows XP that can I can replace it with? Preferably something that can, in addition to connecting/searching for wireless networks, display stats like signal strength and transfer speeds on graphs so I can better monitor the quality of my connection?

  • VPN still working after rebooting without client - DrayTek client shows "No Connection"

    My home network is a simple router + pc's setup, nothing fancy - the router has DHCP enabled for 192.168.0.X (255.255.255.0) and my PC picks up the address 192.168.0.82. There are no devices on my local lan in the 192.168.1.x range. On my pc i have the DrayTek VPN client, and a company i do some work for has a DrayTek Vigor router. The VPN client establishes a VPN to that remote company using an IPSec Tunnel (PreShared Key - no encryption) Last night i shut down my pc with the VPN tunnel still connected, when i turned my computer on this morning i accidentally clicked an RDP shortcut to 192.168.1.2 (a host in the remote company) and to my amazement it connected?!? My Question: Can an IPSec tunnel stay up some how after a reboot without use of the VPN client? (well, i can clearly see that it can) - where in windows is there visibility of this? how does my machine know where to route the packets? I appreciate any insights & thoughts!

    I with few of my flat-mates share internet connection by using ASL cable into one laptop and then making Adhoc private network so that we all can enjoy internet connectivity. It all worked wonderful few initial days, but now my MS vista is taking much time to identify that adhoc network and it though I am connected to my friend, it takes 5-10 minutes untill I use internet.

  • ftp connection problem, vsftp server, active mode

    I have a server that runs vsftpd to handle ftp connections. One of my users have a notebook with Total Commander and WinSCP installed. Both ftp clients fail right after the connection is established to the server and it tries to download the directory listing with the following error message: Timeout detected. Could not retrieve directory listing PORT command successful. Consider using PASV. Error listing directory '/'. The weird thing is: the notebook works perfectly ok with other ftp servers. My ftp server also works well with other clients. In fact, this user also has a pc running on the same LAN as the notebook and the pc works well with the ftp server. We use PORT ftp connection mode. Passive mode works well but is not an option at this point. I would post more technical details but I don't even know what this problem is related to. Anyway, below is the server side tcpdump for the failed connection attempt. There's no further communication between the client and the server after the last line of log.   • Windows 7 FTP Connection Ignores File Type Associations

    I have an FTP connection active through the Map Network Drive option in Windows 7 64-bit. When navigating the remote directory, I see no way to edit files. Windows is completely ignoring file-type associations and "opens" everything with my default browser. Is there any way that I can simply edit these files? I'm open to suggestions of other software as well, but from what I can see, NetDrive doesn't work with 64-bit.

    When connecting to my work computer over VPN and Remote Desktop Connection, images and videos are sent back one frame at a time, which really slows things down. I'm familiar with the "Experience" tab while connecting and the only options I have checked are "Visual styles" and "Persistent bitmap caching". Isn't it possible to work remotely that is more similar to screen sharing over Skype, where there is a lag but not every single frame has to be rendered and passed back to me one at a time? Both computers are running Windows 7 Professional.

    I've wrote a simple batch file to connect to a specific VPN connection using RASDIAL rasdial MyVPNConnection but it always returned the error 691 Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain. Remote Access Service (RAS) Error Code List then i tried pointing to my Remote Access Phonebook (Rasphone.pbk) and see what happens rasdial MyVPNConnection /phonebook:%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk and still there was an error 691. I've then unchecked the following but still the same problem was reported when executing my batch file.

Even when using credentials from Computer Client I (which are not in ADDS) the connection still only goes to the server.
