• Should I still use querystrings for page number, etc, when using ASP.NET 4 URL Routing?

  I am switching from Intelligencia's UrlRewriter to the new web forms routing in ASP.NET 4.0. I have it working great for basic pages, however, in my e-commerce site, when browsing category pages, I previously used querystrings that were built into my pager control to control paging. An old url (with UrlRewriting) would be: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17 I now have a MapPageRoute defined in global.asax as: routes.MapPageRoute("category-browse", "Category/{name}_{id}", ~/CategoryPage.aspx"); This works great. Now, somebody clicks to go to page 2. Previously I would have just tacked on ?page=2 as the querystring. Now, How do I handle this using web forms routing? I know I can do something like: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17/page/2 But in addition to page, I can have filters, age ranges, gender, etc. Should I just keep defining routes that handle these variables, or should I continue using querystrings and can I define a route that allows me to use my querstrings like before?

As you can see below, I've got a form that I can dynamically tell how many rows to create. How can I create an "Add Row" link that tells the view how many rows to create? • How to Sort a TreeList in Sitecore 6 in the Source

  My team uses Sitecore 6 as content management system and then .Net to interface with Sitecore API. In many of our templates we make use of a Treelist. When adding a new item to the selected items Treelist it automatically puts the item at the bottom of the list. In some lists they get very large. In most cases end users would like to see these lists sorted descending by a Date field that is part of the templates that can be added as selected to the Treelist. Programmatically on the .Net side its very easy to handle this using Linq OrderByDescending and all displays great in the site to visitors. What I am trying to figure out is how to get it to display the same in Sitecore Content Editor. I've not found anything from Google search other than there seems to be a SortBy you can specify in the source but I tried this and can't get it to have any effect. Has anyone dealt with this before? Again, main goal is to sort items in a Treelist in the Sitecore Content Editor itself. Thanks for any input anyone has.

• Is there a straightforward way to have a ThreadStatic instance member?

  With the ThreadStatic attribute I can have a static member of a class with one instance of the object per thread. This is really handy for achieving thread safety using types of objects that don't guarantee thread-safe instance methods (e.g., System.Random). It only works for static members, though. Is there some corresponding attribute that provides the same functionality, but for instance members? In other words, that allows me to have one instance of the object, per thread, per instance of the containing class?

• Why are my bound parameters all identical (using Linq)?

  When I run this snippet of code: string[] words = new string[] { "foo", "bar" }; var results = from row in Assets select row; foreach (string word in words) { results = results.Where(row => row.Name.Contains(word)); } I get this SQL: -- Region Parameters DECLARE @p0 VarChar(5) = '%bar%' DECLARE @p1 VarChar(5) = '%bar%' -- EndRegion SELECT ... FROM [Assets] AS [t0] WHERE ([t0].[Name] LIKE @p0) AND ([t0].[Name] LIKE @p1) Note that @p0 and @p1 are both bar, when I wanted them to be foo and bar. I guess Linq is somehow binding a reference to the variable word rather than a reference to the string currently referenced by word? What is the best way to avoid this problem? (Also, if you have any suggestions for a better title for this question, please put it in the comments.)   I am just starting to learn about the code contracts library that comes standard with VS2010. One thing I am running into right away is what some of the contract clauses really mean. For example, how are these two statements different? Contract.Requires(!mycollection.Any(a => a.ID == newID)); Contract.Requires(!Contract.Exists(mycollection, a => a.ID == newID)); In other words, what does Contract.Exists do in practical purposes, either for a developer using my function, or for the static code analysis system?

• Highlighting a custom UIButton

  The app I'm building has LOTS of custom UIButtons laying over top of fairly precisely laid out images. Buttonish, controllish images and labels and what have you, but with a clear custom-style UIButton sitting over top of it to handle the tap. My client yesterday says, "I want that to highlight when you tap it". Never mind that it immediately pushes on a new uinavigationcontroller view... it didn't blink, and so he's confused. Oy. Here's what I've done to address it. I don't like it, but it's what I've done: I subclassed UIButton (naming it FlashingUIButton). For some reason I couldn't just configure it with a background image on control mode highlighted. It never seemed to hit the state "highlighted". Don't know why that is. So instead I wrote: -(void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { [self setBackgroundImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"grey_screen"] forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [self performSelector:@selector(resetImage) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.2]; [super touchesBegan:touches withEvent:event]; } -(void)resetImage { [self setBackgroundImage:nil forState:UIControlStateNormal]; } This happily lays my grey_screen.png (a 30% opaque black box) over the button when it's tapped and replaces it with happy emptyness .2 of a second later. This is fine, but it means I have to go through all my many nibs and change all my buttons from UIButtons to FlashingUIButtons. Which isn't the end of the world, but I'd really hoped to address this as a UIButton category, and hit all birds with one stone. Any suggestions for a better approach than this one?

• IIS7 URL Rewriting: How not to drop HTTPS protocol from rewritten URL?

  I'm working on a website that's using IIS 7's URL rewriting feature to do a permanent redirect from example.com to www.example.com, as well as rewrites from similar domain names to the "main" one, such as from www.examples.com to www.example.com. This rewrite rule - shown below - has worked well for sometime now. However, we recently added HTTPS support and noticed that if users visit one of the URLs to be rewritten to www.example.com then HTTPS is dropped. For instance, if a user visits https://example.com they get redirected to http://www.example.com, whereas we would like them to be sent to https://www.example.com. Here is the rewrite rule of interest (in Web.config): <rule name="Canonical Host Name" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="(.*)" /> <conditions logicalGrouping="MatchAny"> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^example\.com$" /> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^(www\.)?example\.net$" /> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^(www\.)?example\.info$" /> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^(www\.)?examples\.com$" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" url="http://www.example.com/{R:1}" redirectType="Permanent" /> </rule> As you can see, the action element's url attribute points directly to http://, so I get why https://example.com is redirected to http://www.example.com. • jQuery carousel click updates selected item in a select list?

  I'm trying to hook up the click event on a jQuery image carousel's images so that it updates a select list in the same document and sets the "selected" option to match the item that was clicked in the carousel. The "title" attribute on each of the carousel images matches at least one option in the select list (title is always unique). • ASP.NET MVC loading of CSS based off of controller

  Within my site I have controller specific CSS files in addition to my master css file. For example CSS/ Prodcuts/ product.css ... Blog/ blog.css ... masterStyle.css Where masterStyle.css is the master css file. What I want to do is when the user hits http://www.example.com/Products/ only mySite.css and all css files under Products get included. What is the best way to go about doing this?

• just started getting the "validation of viewstate mac" error

  I have had a site up and running for quite a while, but I've just started getting the MAC failed error. Quite often too. While coding tonight I've noticed it 4 times or so. The host (through someone else) changed servers and we've had a bunch of issues. This started happening since then. What are all the possibilities that it could be on the server end that I could ask? • Webview blank but content is there

  I am having trouble displaying a webview. I have a webview inside a custom view. I load this custom view as a subview of the window, and then have an object controller linking a text field to the content of the web view. Once a page is loaded, it loads all the content, but it is visually white. You can click on links. If you go to a Youtube video you can listen to it, but it still displays nothing.

  Hi This is pretty hard to explain but i'll give it a shot. Working with Safari to create an extension as is now possible with Safari 5 - how would I go about getting the URL of the current page with using JavaScript and the Safari API? I would also like to be able to get a hyperlink that is selected. For instance in Safari when you right click on a hyperlink and it says open in a new tab, open in a window etc - clicking opens that hyperlink. What part of the API is used to get access to the link itself, and how does it know its a link in the first place? I hope thats clear enough. Thanks

• .NET Best Way to move many files to and from various directories??

  I've created a program that moves files to and from various directories. An issue I've come across is when you're trying to move a file and some other program is still using it. And you get an error. Leaving it there isn't an option, so I can only think of having to keep trying to move it over and over again. This though slows the entire program down, so I create a new thread and let it deal with the problem file and move on to the next. The bigger problem is when you have too many of these problem files and the program now has so many threads trying to move these files, that it just crashes with some kernel.dll error. Here's a sample of the code I use to move the files: Public Sub MoveIt() Try File.Move(_FileName, _CopyToFileName) Catch ex As Exception Threading.Thread.Sleep(5000) MoveIt() End Try End Sub As you can see.. I try to move the file, and if it errors, I wait and move it again.. over and over again.. I've tried using FileInfo as well, but that crashes WAY sooner than just using the File object. So has anyone found a fool proof way of moving files without it ever erroring? Note: it takes a lot of files to make it crash. It'll be fine on the weekend, but by the end of the day on monday, it's done.

• C/C++ enums: Detect when multiple items map to same value

  Is there a compile-time way to detect / prevent duplicate values within a C/C++ enumeration? The catch is that there are multiple items which are initialized to explicit values. Background: I've inherited some C code such as the following: #define BASE1_VAL (5) #define BASE2_VAL (7) typedef enum { MsgFoo1A = BASE1_VAL, // 5 MsgFoo1B, // 6 MsgFoo1C, // 7 MsgFoo1D, // 8 MsgFoo1E, // 9 MsgFoo2A = BASE2_VAL, // Uh oh! 7 again... MsgFoo2B // Uh oh! 8 again... } FOO; The problem is that as the code grows & as developers add more messages to the MsgFoo1x group, eventually it overruns BASE2_VAL. This code will eventually be migrated to C++, so if there is a C++-only solution (template magic?), that's OK -- but a solution that works with C and C++ is better.

  So I'm aware that nothing is atomic in C++. But I'm trying to figure out if there are any "pseudo-atomic" assumptions I can make. The reason is that I want to avoid using mutexes in some simple situations where I only need very weak guarantees. 1) Suppose I have globally defined volatile bool b, which initially I set true. Then I launch a thread which executes a loop while(b) doSomething(); Meanwhile, in another thread, I execute b=true. Can I assume that the first thread will continue to execute? In other words, if b starts out as true, and the first thread checks the value of b at the same time as the second thread assigns b=true, can I assume that the first thread will read the value of b as true? Or is it possible that at some intermediate point of the assignment b=true, the value of b might be read as false? 2) Now suppose that b is initially false. Then the first thread executes bool b1=b; bool b2=b; if(b1 && !b2) bad(); while the second thread executes b=true. Can I assume that bad() never gets called? 3) What about an int or other builtin types: suppose I have volatile int i, which is initially (say) 7, and then I assign i=7. Can I assume that, at any time during this operation, from any thread, the value of i will be equal to 7? 4) I have volatile int i=7, and then I execute i++ from some thread, and all other threads only read the value of i. Can I assume that i never has any value, in any thread, except for either 7 or 8? 5) I have volatile int i, from one thread I execute i=7, and from another I execute i=8. Afterwards, is i guaranteed to be either 7 or 8 (or whatever two values I have chosen to assign)?

• Python/Numpy - Save Array with Column AND Row Titles

  I want to save a 2D array to a CSV file with row and column "header" information (like a table). I know that I could use the header argument to numpy.savetxt to save the column names, but is there any easy way to also include some other array (or list) as the first column of data (like row titles)? Below is an example of how I currently do it. • Bash script not working on a new dedicated server

  Recently I have migrated to the new dedicated server which is running on the same operating system - FreeBSD 8.2. I got a root account access and all permissions have been set properly.
